Dear Friends
On behalf of the Hawkeye Community College Foundation and the students, faculty, and staff of
Hawkeye Community College, THANK YOU for your ongoing support of education.
Not long ago, a scholarship recipient sought me out at a community event, and with tears of
gratitude she said the most heartfelt thank you I have ever heard. She recounted her desperate
attempts to find employment before earning her high school equivalency diploma through the
Hawkeye Community College Metro Center. It was there she discovered her ability, but still
waivered in her confidence. With the urging of staff members from the Metro Center, she made
the commitment to earn her associate degree at Hawkeye Community College and graduated in
May 2014. She will finish her bachelor’s degree at a local university in May 2016 and she is already
looking at master’s programs.
While I was very impressed with her academic accomplishments, it was what she said next that
was most important, “Without Hawkeye Community College, I would never have believed in
myself. The scholarship that was given to me was an opportunity. Thank you for everything you
did to help me.” She continued, “There are more people like me in our community. They have so
much potential, but we have to find a way to help them see what is possible!”
Our staff and board members have the privilege to hear these stories firsthand, but the real
heroes for our students are our donors. You are providing access to a high quality, life-changing
education. We see new opportunities to help students each day, and through your continued
generosity, we are able to help more students each year.
The opportunities to support the college are endless and range from providing scholarships to
program funding and faculty development funds.
We hope you find inspiration and validation in the stories of this report. These are lives that are
impacted because you have helped them to see what is possible!

CONNECTING RESOURCES TO HELP
Needing to improve her English…seeking additional
education…searching for guidance, Awa El Amin has
found success through Hawkeye Community College.
Awa was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal,
where she graduated from the Institut Africain de
Management with a degree in finance. As an adult,
she was successful in her career working in various
transportation and financial businesses in her home
country.
She met her husband when he was visiting Senegal
for a family wedding. They married in 2010 and Awa
came to the United States in 2012.
Although Awa has a degree from Senegal, it is a very
lengthy process to have it translated to determine
which credits would transfer or apply toward a degree
in the United States. She decided to start classes as
she waited for the process to be completed.
[
When asked about the opportunities she sees for
the future, Awa stated, “The United States is like
paradise. If you work for it, you can have so much!”
The United States is like paradise. If
you work for it, you can have so much!
]
Awa strives to have a professional job like she had
in Senegal. She knew she needed to speak English
fluently and her mother-in-law encouraged her to
attend Hawkeye Community College’s Metro Center
for English Language Learning (ELL) classes.
Awa took an English class and earned good grades.
At that point she felt ready to enroll in college
courses. Laura Hidlebaugh, an ELL instructor,
mentored Awa and recognized that she needed more
English classes to be successful. Awa reflected on
that decision, “I listened to Laura. My English really
improved over the next year. Laura is an amazing
teacher and became a great friend. I loved my classes
at the Metro Center. The instructors want people to
do well. They knew what I needed to be successful
and they pushed me.”
4
Anna Laneville, a transition specialist at the college,
became another mentor for Awa, “Awa is a leader,”
Anna said. “She is strong, resilient, and a role model.
She doesn’t give up.”
“I met Anna a year ago,” Awa explained. “She is
vital to me being successful. It was hard to come to
campus, but she showed me the way. She was there
for me at the Metro Center, and she is here for me on
Main Campus.”
A transition specialist serves as the vital link for
students, serving as mentors and transitioning them
from programs at the Metro Center to post-secondary
training. A specialist meets one-on-one with students
and guide them through the enrollment process.
After college classes start, the transition specialist
continues to support students through regular
meetings and check-ins.
Anna loves her job, “I get to help people see their
own potential. It is there – they just don’t know it.
I help them discover their own strengths and then
provide access to education. These are people who
live in our community and they are helping to improve
the community in which they live.”
Anna stated, “Awa is very well respected by students
at the Metro Center. Many students look up to her.
When I ask students if they know Awa, their eyes get
big – they are proud of her because they know she is
already successful.”
“
When I found
out I received
a scholarship, I
started to cry. I
thought – wow
that is money! It
was such a relief.
Thank you!
”
STUDENTS SUCCEED
Awa started classes on the Main Campus in 2015.
“On the first day of school I was nervous. I was
scared. I told myself I have a lot of people behind me
and I needed to keep pushing myself.” Her classes
include reading, writing, and math. Awa made
another connection at Hawkeye with a reading and
writing instructor, Ellen Sonnet. “She helped me a lot.
She would also push me. She knew I could do it.”
Awa’s message to others is, “If you want good
grades, there are many people who will help you
succeed at Hawkeye Community College. I love my
classes.”
Many of Hawkeye’s students balance work, family,
and school on their education journey. Awa is a parttime student taking classes in the morning. She also
works second shift at Tyson – full time. She has been
offered promotions at work and did not accept them,
as she decided to focus on school right now, “I don’t
know how I do it – sometimes I am overwhelmed
and exhausted. I work in production safety. Many of
my co-workers ask how I do it. I tell them Hawkeye
is very good and they need to start at the Metro
Center and improve their English. Anna will help them
transfer to campus. I push them.”
To learn more about scholarships and providing
opportunities to students studying at the Metro
Center, please contact the Hawkeye Community
College Foundation.
Dear Donor,
It’s with humility and profound gratitude that
I accept this scholarship. We Believe in
You award allowed me to pay my tuition.
I appreciate your recognition of my efforts.
Going back to school wasn’t easy for me. The
main obstacle was that I do not qualify for
financial aid and I have to pay for school on my
own. This scholarship will enable me to focus
on my studies without financial uncertainty.
Again thank you for your generous and
meaningful gift.
~Awa
Paying for college is stressful for Awa. “I prefer not to
owe anyone money. I am paying for college myself.”
Awa received the We Believe in You Scholarship to
attend Hawkeye Community College. “When I found
out I received a scholarship, I started to cry. I thought –
wow that is money! It was such a relief. Thank you!”
Awa has learned so much over the past few
years. She is currently enrolled in the Business
Administration program, and she is determined to
earn her degree. Hawkeye Community College will
continue to support Awa as she pursues education –
connecting her with resources to help her succeed.
HUMBLE. HONEST. HARDWORKING.
These three words describe Awa’s character through
this educational journey, and these characteristics will
help her continue to build a strong future after earning
her degree.
Anna Laneville and Awa El Amin

THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
An endowment is a fund that is invested and the principal remains intact in perpetuity or for a
defined time period. Earnings on the endowment create a source of revenue to fund the specific
interest of the donor.
Samuel Waite
Program: Natural Resources Management – “I chose
the program more for the love of nature. I like taking
care of nature and spending time outdoors. I love this
program.”
Why Hawkeye? “I chose Hawkeye because of the
Natural Resources Management program and because
it was accessible.”
Future Goals: “My goal is to obtain a position in land
management, particularly with woodlands or prairie.”
Best Thing about Hawkeye Community College:
“I like the relationship between the professors and the
students. The professors take time to get to know their
students. The small class size is great.”
Hawkeye Community College Foundation received
a $445,000 gift through the estate of Lloyd R. Dilley
and Donald L. Dilley. This endowed gift established
the Lloyd R. Dilley and Donald L. Dilley Memorial
Scholarship, which provides scholarships for Bremer
County high school graduates in specific programs.
Currently two $5,000 scholarships are awarded
annually to students.
The value education brings to students, their
families, and our community is made even stronger
through the ongoing support of our donors. You
have the power to make a lasting impact on
Hawkeye Community College students through
a planned gift. Your planned gift will benefit the
college’s students, faculty, and programs for many
generations to come.
Gifts large and small are important. Charitable giving
is not only for the wealthy! Consider making a gift
from your estate to Hawkeye Community College.

Words to Donor: “Thank you. I would like to express
my gratitude. It is nice to know that someone
established a scholarship to specifically help students
seeking a degree from Bremer County.”
“
I chose the program more for
the love of nature. I like taking
care of nature and spending time
outdoors. I love this program.

Zachery Kuhlmann
Program: Landscape and Turf Management – “I
first started at UNI to major in athletic training. Then I
changed to criminal justice. Then I started my job at
Weeds on Fire and I really liked it. I thought why not
try a program in school related to my job. I am on the
right track now.”
Why Hawkeye? “I like that the college was close to
home.”
Future Goals: “I would like to work in the field related
to my current job.”
Best Thing about Hawkeye Community College:
“It is a good school. My program is hands-on learning.
I get a lot of experience with a lot of different types of
projects.”
Words to Donor: “Thank you. I was very surprised
when I received the scholarship. It was a great
honor when I learned it was a memorial scholarship.
Financially it made a big difference.”

Charles H Dalton Jr.
Scholarship
“
The Foundation made it so easy to set-up
this scholarship to honor my father. The
scholarship turned out to be exactly what
my father would have wanted to do.
”
sold the business to his employees when he retired
in 1986. Charles served on the Waterloo Board of
Education from 1966-1973, serving as president from
1970-1972. He and his wife, Betty Landgraf Dalton, a
Waterloo East graduate, understood the importance
of education, especially career and technical training.
Through the years he hired many Hawkeye graduates
and often had students apprentice with his highlyskilled technicians.
Charles H Dalton Jr. was a civic leader – helping to
continually improve the community in which he lived.
He wanted to provide opportunities for others to
improve themselves and his legacy continues as a
scholarship established at the Hawkeye Community
College Foundation to help students achieve their
educational goals.
The Charles H Dalton Jr. Scholarship was created
by his daughter, Ann Dalton. “My folks set such a
wonderful example for us by getting involved in and
giving back to the community that meant so much to
them. My motivation for starting this scholarship in my
dad’s name is to fulfill his dream of encouraging young
men and women to continue their educations beyond
high school – to find success and fulfillment in a career
as satisfying as his was.”
Charles was a proponent of young adults pursuing
careers in the trades and industrial arts. He especially
wanted these students to be committed to the hard
work and excellence required for a career in the
trades. Ann recalled, “He knew his success in the
community depended on a team of well-trained service
professionals. Dad’s forte was the nuts and bolts of
the business; his employees added their technical
skills to the mix. It turned out to be a great – and very
successful – business model.”
He started Dalton Hardware in 1949 and it became
Dalton Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling in 1959. He

As Charles was very involved in the Waterloo school
system, the scholarships provide financial support
for Waterloo graduates. Two $2,500 scholarships
are awarded annually to incoming students from the
Waterloo Community School District who are pursuing
a degree or diploma in an Industrial and Engineering
Technology program. The students must demonstrate
financial need and have a minimum high school grade
point average of 2.5. Preference is given to students
with a 3.0 GPA or higher, as well as to female and
minority students.
“The Foundation made it so easy to set-up this
scholarship to honor my father. The scholarship
turned out to be exactly what my father would have
wanted to do.”
As demonstrated throughout Hawkeye Community
College’s history, the college successfully graduates
professionals who are workforce-ready and who
offer a competitive advantage to area employers. In
order to continue giving students access to a quality
and affordable education, additional scholarships
are needed. The cost of college should not inhibit
individuals from achieving their goals.
An investment with Hawkeye Community College
provides a better quality of life for those who live,
work, and raise families in our community for many
generations to come.
