A Different Kind of Beginning
T
he year was 1945. World War II was
near its end, but still raging in Europe
and in the Pacific. A couple of young
music educators and parents, upon the
urging of their famous mentor, Peter
Dykema, Professor and Chair of Music at
Columbia University Teachers College,
decided to turn their talents toward
making instruments for music education
in elementary schools.
Sylvia and Mack Perry named their
fledgling business “Peripole.” Their first
product was their signature “Tymptone”
drum which was made in the living room
of their apartment in Brooklyn, NY, from
recycled and salvaged materials. No new
materials were available because of the
22
war effort, to which the entire country
and its resources were marshalled. Each
drum was hand-painted by Sylvia with
small figurines.
The Perrys were soon delighted to receive
an order from the famous Macy’s department store in New York City, and being the
“cottage” industry that they were, they had
no choice but to deliver the order in the
only freight carrier available to them — a
baby carriage.
The years that followed saw Sylvia and
Mack take Peripole out of their living
room and into a storefront building. There
was no one else making musical instruments for general music education at the
time, and the Perrys saw rapid growth in
All products subject to our Triple Guarantee
Peripole. They took over the store next
door, then the one next to that, and finally
moved into a commercial factory building.
In the early 1960s, established leaders in
their field, the Perrys forged an alliance
with the Orff-Schulwerk movement in
Europe and made history by becoming the
first company to import Orff instruments
into the United States for sale to schools.
The Perrys were also charter members
of AOSA. In 1974, after launching two
famous brands of Orff instruments in the
United States, the Perrys made a new
partnership with the Bergerault company
in France, having finally found a company
whose Orff instrument quality matched
their own high standards of manufacture.

Welcome
In the early 1960's, competitors arose who
shipped our instruments overseas to be copied.
Since then, this has become part of life. However,
although our prices have been matched, and at
times even beaten, the one thing that has never
been matched is our quality. We are very proud
of this fact.

Cooperative Purchasing Partners
Peripole, Inc. is an awarded vendor with several cooperative purchasing
agencies. These agencies create and award a bid, on a state and / or
national level which can be utilized or “piggy-backed” on by any school or
non-profit institution. In this way schools, churches, and other
non-profits, who do not have the resources to issue and award
bid quotations can know that they are receiving the best value
and price, while fulfilling requirements for competitive bidding.
For more information contact Carol Lund, Sales Manager at carol@peripole.
com or by telephone at (800) 443-3592.
From our Tymptone Drum, to all of our jingle-bell
products, to our woodblocks, and much more,
Peripole has remained a solid US manufacturer,
despite the temptation to seek cheaper overseas
sources. We also contract with several other
US manufacturers for manufacturing and/or
distribution. In fact, you will find over 100 items in
this catalog manufactured exclusively in the USA.
Although we do offer many cost-competitive, nonUS made products, our commitment to growing
our US manufacturing and quality is absolute.
We are also proud that our Orff Instruments are
manufactured in France, a country with outstanding
industrial standards, similar to our own.
Please join us in supporting the rekindling of the
entrepreneurial flame of manufacturing in the USA
and in raising world industrial standards!
STILL MAKING MUSIC “GREEN”
Being “in harmony” means a lot of things to a lot of people. But as
our planetary time passes and populations grow, it has become
critical to consider the long term health and harmony of not only
the people and other living things that inhabit the earth, but also
the health of the living ecosystems of the planet itself.
Peripole, Inc. has always taken this commitment seriously from
the time when we began our own program to reuse shipping
boxes in 1992 to the present when we have completed an
extensive insulation project including replacement of all of the
large size windows on our building with energy conserving ones,
thus yielding a smaller “carbon footprint”. In 2008 we took the
peripole.com additional step of purchasing 100% of the electrical power we use
from renewable “green” sources. Additionally, we are proud that
this catalog is printed on recycled paper with soy ink.
You may have noticed that we favor natural, biodegradable,
renewable and recyclable materials in the construction of
our instruments and in our packaging materials. This is not an
accident. We seek to avoid using products that are harmful to
the environment and to individual health, and we favor natural
authentic materials such as wood and tunable skins for drums,
but always with an eye to quality. We never have and never will use
lead based paints in our products.

PERIPOLE-BERGERAULT® ORFF Instruments
ORFF Instruments
Tradition
Founded by instrumental and mechanical
genius, Albert Bergerault in 1932, the Bergerault Company has
continued in France for three generations, each training the next.
Expertise
Expertise cannot be taught, it must be
learned by experience. From the selection of rosewood for
optimum physical properties for sound production; to tuning,
bar dimensions, and style; Bergerault has painstakingly
explored and found the techniques needed to construct
great instruments. These techniques are present in their
world-renowned mallet percussion instruments as well as
Peripole-Bergerault® Orff instruments.
Quality
From the chromed steel bars on our
glockenspiels (other brands are either raw steel, nickel-plated,
or aluminum) to the individually pitched-resonator tubes and
intrinsic stands of our Chromatic Orff Instruments, to the
superior rosewood quality and larger dimensions selected
for our products, Peripole-Bergerault® Orff instruments have
multiple features not found in other brands of Orff instruments.
These features are detailed in the Specification sections of
each instrument.
Service Peripole, Inc. is the exclusive North American
source of Peripole-Bergerault® Orff Instruments. We provide
service, parts, and expert consultation regarding our
instruments which are backed by our Triple Guarantee!
Carefully selected rosewood lies in storage, awaiting further conditioning.
Peripole-Bergerault’s rosewood is aged a minimum of six years prior
to use, then conditioned hermetically to further gradually diminish
moisture content.

GUIDE TO SELECTING INSTRUMENTS
T
he Orff Instrumentarium consists of three different kinds of timbre – glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones; three different ranges of voices –
soprano, alto and bass; and two different styles – diatonic and chromatic. Diatonic instruments contain additional F# and Bb bars, thus enabling playing
in a variety of keys. Since it might be desirable to have as many different kinds of sounds as possible, many start out, if budgets permit, with one instrument
in each category. Metal instruments tend to overshadow wood instruments in tonal volume and this, therefore, might be a consideration in doubling on
xylophones and cutting back on metallophones. A Bass Xylophone is strongly recommended as an early choice. Sub-Contra and Contra Bars make excellent
Timpani Drum replacements because of their truer pitch and richer tone. Budgetary considerations are also an important factor and thus influence choices
to purchase. Please feel free to telephone us at 1-800-443-3592 for consultation and assistance. We will always be pleased to help in any possible way.
Remember, financial considerations often compel building a complete instrumentarium to take more than one year to complete. This is why buying top quality
guaranteed instruments is so all important so that the original instruments will remain in perfect condition through the years and thus match perfectly
with new additions. Peripole-Bergerault® instruments will combine successfully with any other instrument accurately tuned to A440.

Our ORFF Mallets are Made in the USA
A GuIDE TO Orff Mallets – Fiberglass vs Birch Shafts
Peripole, Inc. is pleased to offer soprano (blue),
alto (yellow) and bass (red) Orff Instrument
mallets in two shaft materials, fiberglass, which
comes as standard equipment with instruments,
and birch hardwood.
We are often asked which material we recommend
and the truth is that each has advantages and
disadvantages. We offer the following to help
with your selection:
Fiberglass is extremely durable and break
resistant. It also has a heavier head balance, which
creates a feeling like “bouncing a ball” when
playing. Many teachers and clinicians prefer and
recommend this kind of balance. If shafts are struck
against each other or the edge of the keys or other
objects, the protective coating on the shafts will
eventually chip and expose the fiberglass which
peripole.com can splinter. Mallets must be repaired by covering
or refinishing the damaged portion, or they should
be replaced.
Birch Hardwood is a thicker, lighter material
and creates a larger more ergonomic grip and
balanced feel. If the shaft material is damaged
by striking each other or sharp objects, resulting
imperfections are easier to see, and can be easily
repaired by sanding and paint, or by covering.
Birch hardwood, though quite durable with normal
use, might be broken if stepped on or otherwise
severely abused.
Nylon is a splinter-free plastic, and remains so, even
after extended use. It is more flexible than desired
for longer mallets, but is optimal for shorter ones.
We now use nylon for all Glockenspiel mallets.

In keeping with Toca’s green and environmentally-friendly policies, the wood for these
drums is harvested from a plantation in Thailand, where the drums are then lathed and
handcrafted by local musicians. This carefully managed resource is much easier on the

THE MANDé INSTRUMENT ENSEMBLE™
THE MANDé
INSTRUMENT ENSEMBLE™
Mandé is a family of ethnic groups of West Africa in which Mandé languages are
spoken. Located chiefly in Guinea, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and
Mali, Mandé people have beautiful tribal and musical cultures rich in tradition, but also
with modern adaptations.
It was Mandé ethnic groups who developed the drums known as the Djembe (or Jembe)
and the Dunduns (played as a set), which form the core of their traditional ensemble.
Other traditional instruments of this ensemble may be found in this section of our
catalog as well.
These instruments and tools can help bring authentic West African music, dance, and
culture to life in your classroom.

A Special Note About Our
West African Instruments
Instruments in our Mandé Instrument
Ensemble™ are all hand-made by
native craftspeople. As such, they are
both of the finest quality and truly
authentic, giving as real an experience
of the West African village and
music as possible. However, it is not
unusual to find cosmetic flaws in the
instruments that would not be present
in factory-made instruments.
Thus, these minor flaws should be
expected, and our guarantee does
not cover them. We do guarantee
these instruments against major
defects and for quality of sound.
Djembe (JEM-bay) – also spelled
Jembe - This unique and powerful
instrument originated in the 13th
century in the present-day countries
of Guinea and Mali. Its goblet shape
comes from the large mortars used to
pound millet that were adapted into
these drums. Carved from a single
piece of hardwood, with goat skin
stretched across the larger of the two
openings, the Djembe is traditionally
played with the hands while standing,
but can be played seated, as well.
The three primary notes played
on the Djembe cover a large sonic
spectrum, making it both a solo,
and an accompaniment instrument.
Djembes are played in ensembles
with other different pitched Djembes
and with Dundun drums.
The Dundun (DOON-doon) – This
family of double-headed drums
are cylindrically shaped with cowhide heads. The three drums from
largest to smallest are called Dundunba (DOON-doon-bah), Sangban
(SAHNG-bahn), and Kenkeni (KENken-nee). Together, the Dunduns
provide the rhythmic and melodic
foundation for the Mandé Instrument
EnsembleTM and are always played
with Djembes. Dunduns are traditionally played horizontally with the
heads of the drum played with a large
stick (16” to 17” long). They are sometimes placed vertically and played by
one person using two sticks.

ghanaian caxixi rattle
P4327
$8.15
Seke-Seke - The seke-seke
(SEH-KEH SEH-KEH), also called
the “kese-kese”, is a basketshaped shaker from eastern Guinea
comprised of small rocks or seeds
housed in a woven covering of
burlap and leather. They are always
played in pairs using alternating hand motions. We are using
the Ghanaian caxixi in place of the true seke-seke because of
its great similarity and due to a lack of availability of the
seke-seke for importation at this time.
ksing ksing (set of three)
P4323
$39.95
Ksing Ksing - The ksing ksing (kah-SING kah-SING) also
called “sese-sese” (SE-say, SE-say) in some areas, are three
metal “ears” with attached metal rings
that are sometimes attached to a
soloist’s or leader’s drum to produce a
rattle effect, giving the perception of
increased volume and differentiation
or coloration of sound.
Bala - The bala (BAH-lah), called balafon in French,
originates among the Susu ethnic group but is found
throughout West Africa. Considered by many to be the
precursor to the modern xylophone, the bala consists of a
frame from which 21 wooden bars are strung in decreasing
length, each with gourd resonators attached to the bottom.
We are recommending the use of our Orff xylophones to be
substituted for traditional bala parts, as also recommended
by Ryan Camara and Kalani. It is for this reason that they
are included in our Mandé Instrument Ensemble™ Sets.

TEACHERS NOTE
A variety of rhythm instrument sets have been prepared. The aim of
our Education Department in arranging these outfits was primarily
to effect variety and balance in tone color and instrumentation.
Economy Sets and Enriched Sets were created to serve different
budget considerations. All sets contain the same high-quality, fully
guaranteed instruments. The price differential is due to the inclusion
of more expensive items such as drums and tambourines.

UKULELES
Tattoo Series
Extracting design ideas from
traditional monochrome Hawaiian body
ornamentation, these ukuleles look and
sound stunningly beautiful. The TATTOO
series designs are primarily based on
waves and sharks teeth which are also
echoed as fret markers. The HONU
soprano is based on a stylized Hawaiian
turtle (honu). Fret markers on this
instrument are also stylized sharks teeth.

The etched patterns on the
back of Luna’s banjoleles are a
tribute to traditional Hawaiian
quilt design. In the early
1800’s, missionaries brought
woven fabrics and steel needles
and taught the Hawaiian people how
to make patchwork quilts. But the Hawaiians
made them uniquely their own. The designs were
cut from one piece by folding fabric in the same
way that you would fold paper to cut snowflakes
and were based on the many plants that surround
them. The old legends say a breadfruit pattern
(called ULU in Hawaiian) was the first truly
Hawaiian Quilt design and is the first design
traditionally used when beginning the craft.

JASMINE GUITARS
Jasmine Guitars
Jasmine guitars are the kind of instrument that beginning and intermediate level musicians are proud
to play. The sound is great and so is the action and intonation. It's the kind of instrument that makes
you love to play and practice!
These classical guitar models are scaled to exact dimensions
in fingerboard scale, bracing and acoustic tolerances, and for
correct pitch regardless of size. The Jasmine sizing system
establishes full size (4/4) as the adult size and the smaller
(3/4) guitar for smaller players. Both sizes of the Jasmine
guitar are constructed of the same high quality materials,
featuring a top made of spruce naturally finished, real
Mahogany back and sides, nato neck and pegboard face,
adjustable tuning machines with white pearl buttons.

CUTAWAY
Dreadnought
P7210
Dreadnought $117.75
Acoustic$147.00
Cutaway body style has a
pleasing, rounded profile that is
narrow at the waist, yet broad
behind the bridge creating
a soundboard that offers a
balanced frequency response
with deep bass, clear treble, and
a sweet, round midrange that
projects well. The body carries
the depth of a dreadnought to
ensure a great level of volume.
It has the feel of a small-bodied
guitar yet yields impressive
performance. The deep
cutaway allows easy access
to the instruments
higher frets and range.
Dreadnought guitars are the
deep, round, figure-8 shape that
have become the standard of

TAKAMINE GUITARS
GUITARS
Peripole, Inc. is proud of its special affiliation as an educational
distributor for the fine guitar lines of Takamine. These renowned
instruments cover the entire spectrum of style, use, and price range and
are famous for their beautiful sound and quality craftsmanship. They are
used and endorsed by a large number of famous performing artists and
educators. In short, they are sure to keep a music student, as well as a
seasoned musician, inspired to practice and perfect their art.
We do encourage you, however, to view the Takamine.com
website and examine the entire line. The site has detailed
specifications for each model, and all of their lines are
shown in their entirety. Once you have selected the models
that fit your needs, please contact us for a quotation. We
guarantee to offer you a price equal to, or better than, any
other advertised price.
From fine classical instruments, to acoustic/electric models, Takamine
has something to offer to everyone. Because Peripole is focused on
the educational market, in our catalog we have chosen to highlight
Takamine’s G-Series, which features instruments in the price range
usually below $500. Of these, we have only listed on these
pages the models which we feel best serve the Music Educator and
their students.
Few companies will offer you the experience, personalized
service, and purchasing options available through Peripole.
We are on most school bid lists and are awarded vendors for
many cooperative purchasing agencies such as BuyBoard, and
we have extensive experience working with schools and other
institutions. When you think of fine guitars, think Takamine
and Peripole!

interest of serving you more efficiently, we reserve the right
to make partial shipment when a delay is unavoidable. We

All orders are shipped either from our facility in Salem,
Oregon, or, at our discretion, we may have an item shipped
directly from our supplier.
Shortage or damage in shipment – Please check
contents carefully according to the enclosed packing slip. Be
on the lookout for small items. Please report any discrepancy
within 10 days. Should damage occur, please contact us at
once to report damage or shortage. Please be mindful of

Discretionary Returns – We want you to be completely

Items returned under this policy must be shipped at your

first-class new condition, you will be notified that the item
was not received in satisfactory condition and you may then
choose to have the item returned to you at your expense.
A letter must be enclosed with the returned item stating the
customer’s complete name and address, phone number,
email address, and reason for return.
OUR Triple Guarantee – Peripole, Inc. guarantees that all
of our products are of excellent quality, workmanship, and
that their musical function will be accurate, as intended. If
an item is found to be of insufficient quality, workmanship, or
musical function, it will be considered a defective item and
will be subject to our defective item return policy. Further,
we guarantee that we will, upon request, match or beat
any currently advertised price on an identical item sold in
the USA. This advertisement must show that the advertised
price is currently in effect.
Please Note: Due to hygienic considerations, all sales on
instruments which are played by mouth (recorders, didgeridoos, whistles, etc.) are final, and they cannot be returned
under our discretionary returns policy. If these items are
defective, they can be exchanged for a replacement under
our defective item policy.
peripole.com Defective Item RETURN – We do our very best to send
you items of only the highest quality possible, free of defects. If you happen to receive a defective item, please call
our office at 800-443-3592 or 503-362-2560 (8:30 am to
5:00 pm Pacific Time) to initiate a defective item claim and
receive an RMA Number. Your claim will be evaluated and,
if approved, our representative will issue an RMA Number
and we will send you a UPS pre-paid shipping label that
you can use to return the item to us at any UPS shipping
outlet. The RMA Number must be written clearly and visibly
on the outside of the box. Also, a letter must accompany the
item inside the box stating the customer’s name, address,
phone number, email address and RMA Number. No items
can be accepted without an RMA Number.
It is the customer’s responsibility to pack the item in such
a way that it is well padded and protected, and is received
in first-class new condition. With the exception of the
stated defect, if the item is not received in first-class new
condition, the item cannot be returned. We will not pay for
expedited shipping and we do not accept COD’s. We may,
at our discretion, make alternative shipping arrangements
with our customers.
Upon receipt of the item, and final approval of the defective
item claim, a replacement item or items will be shipped to
the customer at our expense by normal shipping methods
previously stated. Should the customer request a refund
instead of a replacement, this will fall under our discretionary
returns and a 10% restocking fee will apply.
All refunds, will only be issued to the same credit card or
other account that was used to pay for the item initially.
All claims for defective items must be made as soon as the
flaw is observable. In most cases this is upon receipt and
therefore should not occur more than 10 days after receipt.
All defective items claims must be made within 30 days. In
special situations where inspection is delayed, this may be
extended at our discretion up to 90 days maximum.
We reserve the right to make changes to our refund and
return policy without prior notice. The current and complete
policy is posted on our website, www.peripole.com.
