Alumni meetings, 3rd
Monday of month at
HOM Parish Center,
6 p.m.
Thank you for reading the
first issue of
CONNECTIONS. This is
the Alumni Association effort
to enhance communication
with all alumni, connect you
with home and each other.
Welcome to the first newsletter for the Heart
of Mary Alumni Association. The objective
of this publication is to establish a line of
communication with the alumni of our beloved
Most Pure Heart of Mary. As we mature we
realize the value of relationships, bonding
friendships and developing a foundation for our
present youth.
The newsletter will be a quarterly publication
published three times per year. It will inform
you of achievements, announcements, funding
development, school news, upcoming events
and highlight two of our alumni in each issue.
We want to re-connect the mighty Lions
nationwide. As Sister Sledge sang in 1979,
“We Are Family”. You will need a valid email
address to receive the newsletter. Let your
classmates know we want to connect with them.
Send us their names, year graduated, contact
information, email address, achievements
Volume 1, Issue 1
As an Alumni of Most Pure Heart of Mary we
are the recipients of an excellent education and
joyous memories. We have a responsibility to
present and future students to ensure they have
the tools and lines of communication or
career achievements.
I look forward to your participation in future
events and suggestions to enhance
communication and fundraising.

Any time former students of Most Pure Heart
of Mary get together there are laughs, tales of
yore and memories re-acquainted. Our school
has a rich history.
Did you know:
The Church was first organized as
St. Anthony’s Mission by Creoles
of African descent.
School was first opened in October, 1900
From 1912 a school annex was built at Davis
Avenue and St. Ann Street.
The High School program was in existence from 1911 until 1968,
when integration opened McGill-Toolen High School to African
Americans.
LIONS ROAR
“Leadership is not a tool
which you occasionally
pick up. It is a lifestyle
commitment to
empowerment, excellence
and innovation.” #np2
The greatest gifts that
we can give to our youth
is discipline, education and
love. Join the alumni
association in supporting
Most Pure Heart of Mary
Lions.
Heart of Mary was the meeting location for the Neighborhood
Organized Workers (NOW) during the civil rights era.

Enrollment up at Most Pure Heart
of Mary; school benefits from
Alabama Accountability Act
scholarships
Excerpt from Mobile Press
Register, November 10, 2014
By Sally Pearsall Ericson
Outstanding Heart of Mary 2015 Graduate
was Brandi A. Trenier. Also, she is the
recipient of the Brother James and Brother
Fidelis Sesquicentennial Scholarship to
attend McGill-Toolen High School.
Despite rumors in the last few years,
Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic
School is not on the
decline - quite the contrary, said
Principal Jamie Crain.
Most Pure Heart of Mary is affiliated with
Notre Dame’s ACE (Alliance for Catholic
Education) Program, Catholic Education.
The ACE program allows Notre Dame
college graduates the opportunity to serve
as full-time teachers in under-resourced
Catholic schools. ACE teachers spend two
summers (June-July) studying in the
Master of Education program at Notre
Dame and two school years (August-May)
teaching in under-resourced Catholic
schools across the country.
ACADEMICS
"We have completely revamped a lot
of things" including adopting a longterm strategic goals plan and building up a network of faculty, parents
and alumni, she said.
Enrollment has risen to 175 at Heart
of Mary, a school that serves innercity children in grades pre-K through
8. The school has room for up to 200
students . "We're still a small
school," Crain said. "We like it to be
small. A lot of our parents appreciate
that about us."
Fifteen of the 2015 Graduating Class
of Most Pure Heart of Mary Elementary
School were accepted to attend
McGill-Toolen Catholic High School
for the 2015-2016 school year.
Heart of Mary's tuition is $2,995 per
year for one child and $1,500 for
siblings; more than a third of the
students are receiving tuition aid
through the Alabama Opportunity
Scholarship Fund, part of the
Alabama Accountability Act.
The AAA "has helped our families
tremendously," Crain said. Many
of the Heart of Mary students are
the children of alumni; some
represent several generations.
With the economic downturn, Crain
said, it became increasingly difficult
for many parents to cover tuition...
