Greetings,
Welcome to the 6th annual Dallas International Film Festival, presented by Boardwalk Auto Group Volkswagen Dealers and a production
of the Dallas Film Society.
Since the Lumière brothers wowed audiences with their first short films in the mid-1890s, movies have made a mark with everyone who
sees them. In that spirit, this festival’s focus is to bring to Dallas contemporary independent films that make marks big enough for Texas,
with an equal commitment to recognize, promote and support the creatives behind this increasingly accessible and egalitarian art form.
We profusely thank our dedicated staff, Board of Directors, Advisory Council, Festival committees and juries, and DIFF’s hundreds of
volunteers; without your guidance and efforts, this 11-day, 160-title survey of film’s artistic, educational and cultural import would be lost.
We’re also hugely appreciative of the philanthropic spirit embodied by our sponsors, donors, and new Dallas Film Society members.
You are all supporting much more than us; your largesse benefits the artistic enrichment of thousands in North Texas. May it continue!
And thank you, filmmakers, for allowing us to feature your creations. We’re staggered by the work, commitment and innovation involved
in each, and we vow to screen them with quality and enthusiasm to audiences with quality and enthusiasm. High cinematic art deserves
no less.
Actually, words don’t completely express how incredibly grateful we are for the generous support of everyone involved with DIFF, from
those above to our Festival and Community Partners and you, the moviegoer. Instead, we’ll let some of the best films in the world speak
for us.
We welcome you all, and we look forward to seeing you throughout our celebration of the importance, power and glory of film.
With gratitude,
Lee Papert
President and CEO Lynn McBee Chairman of the Board James Faust

GLEN KEANE
Legendary animator, director, author and illustrator Glen Keane found his calling by accident. Though the son of Family
Circus creator Bil Keane, he intended to study Fine Arts at Cal Arts, but was mistakenly enrolled in the school of Film
Graphics in 1972. He ran with it, and by 1974 he was training with Ollie Johnson, Frank Thomas and Eric Larson at Disney.
His first assignment was animating scenes in THE RESCUERS, and his first supervisory credit was as directing animator
for THE FOX AND THE HOUND. Since then, he’s drawn lead characters in some of Disney’s most successful films: THE
LITTLE MERMAID, ALADDIN, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and TARZAN, among others. Most recently Keane served as
supervising animator and executive producer on Disney’s 2010 movie, TANGLED.
Outside of Disney, Keane has authored and illustrated a series of children’s bible parable books featuring Adam
Raccoon and King Aren the Lion.
The Festival will present a special screening of a Glen Keane work on Saturday, April 21 at 12 p.m. at the Angelika.

Bernie Tiede transformed Carthage, Texas, with his generosity and effervescence, which made
his arrest for a heinous crime unthinkable to the sleepy town’s populace. Surely a man with
such a warm heart would never commit such an act? BERNIE has been called Jack Black’s best
performance in years and a “Texas FARGO” by its director, Richard Linklater (SLACKER). Driven
by Linklater’s sublime sense for the Southern psyche, BERNIE is sure to reinforce our sense of
what’s righteous.

THE SHINING STAR AWARD HONORS UP-AND-COMING FILM PROFESSIONALS WHO HAVE ALREADY CHANGED THE INDUSTRY
Gabourey Sidibe
In a matter of months, Gabourey Sidibe rocketed from a near-absolute unknown who hadn’t performed on stage
in years to an Academy Award-nominated lead actress who represents hope for the socially and economically
challenged, both in her breakthrough role and in real life.
The daughter of a divorced cab driver and a social worker/R&B singer living in Harlem, Sidibe was a receptionist and
psychology student in New York City when, almost on a whim at the behest of a former acting coach, she auditioned
for PRECIOUS. Her performance as Claireece Jones, an abused Harlem teenager who somehow escapes her
circumstances to live a better life, earned her more than 30 award nominations, including an Oscar nomination for
Best Actress, in 2009.
Since her introductory turn, Sidibe has appeared on Saturday Night Live, voiced characters on the animated Fox
comedy American Dad and appeared in the 2011 crime caper TOWER HEIST with Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy.
She currently plays Andrea Jackson in the Showtime series The Big C and stars opposite Zoë Kravitz in the Victoria
Mahoney drama YELLING TO THE SKY, which was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 2011 Berlin International
Film Festival.
Gabourey Sidibe appears in PRECIOUS, which will screen at DIFF on Saturday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Angelika.
Gabourey Sidibe will accept his Dallas Star Award on April 20 at DFS Honors.

FESTIVAL DEDICATION AND HONOREE
ERIC PLESKOW
Born in Vienna, Austria, Eric Pleskow emigrated to the United States in 1939, joined United Artists in 1951 and headed
its international distribution arm before becoming the major film studio’s president and CEO in 1974—a span that saw
its films win 10 Academy Awards for Best Picture and its global market share rise among Hollywood’s big film companies
from last to nearly first.
United Artists finally attained the top spot in 1977, and a year later Pleskow left to start and lead Orion Pictures,
which made four films that earned Best Picture Oscars in 13 years: AMADEUS (1984), PLATOON (1987), DANCES
WITH WOLVES (1990), and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (1991).
For his film work in post-war Europe as well as his commercial studio career, Pleskow has earned international
recog- nition from Austria, Italy, France, and other countries, culminating in his receiving the key to the City of Vienna
in 2007.
Eric Pleskow will be honored on April 20 at DFS Honors.
LEE ROY AND TANDY MITCHELL
Starting with his first theater in Ennis, Texas, more than 40 years ago, Lee Roy Mitchell built the largest independent theater operation in Texas partially
by pioneering discount days and family promotions. The chain was the bedrock for his founding of Cinemark USA, Inc. in 1987, which has since grown
to become the third largest theater operator in America and a major film exhibitor in 14 Latin American countries as well as Taiwan. Now a public
company with net worth in the billions, Cinemark Holdings hosted 241 million moviegoers in its theaters in 2010 – tops in the world.
As CEO and Chairman of the Board at Cinemark, Mitchell attributes his company’s success to a mix of innovative vision and traditional values. With his
wife and business partner, Tandy, he’s prioritized people over profit—making personal comfort a theater hallmark, investing in communities Cinemark
operates in, and supporting a long list of charities that empower people to better help themselves.
“Eventually, you have to go out on a limb, because that’s where the fruit is.” - Lee Roy Mitchell
Lee Roy and Tandy Mitchell will be honored on April 12 at the Opening Night Celebration.

Biba! One Island, 879 Votes
Low & Clear
Sisters Sarah and Beth fumble through the bumpy emotional landscape of
modern-day relationships, forced to relearn how to love and be loved. From
a screenplay Michael Mohan wrote with famed graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown
and co-writer Egan Reich, this bittersweet but ultimately charming story
about the trials of maturing love carefully balances intimate moments of
pain and happiness.
BIBA! ONE ISLAND, 879 VOTES follows the rallies and debates of Trenton
Conner and Henry San Nicolas in their battle for control over the Pacific
island and US commonwealth Tinian. Along the way we learn about Tinian’s
historic and geopolitical significance as the launch point for the Enola Gay
in World War II and, now, the home of the Voice of America broadcasting
towers, sending pro-democracy propaganda into China and North Korea.
Vital to see during this election year, Ben Bloodwell’s debut feature asks us
to examine our own definitions of democratic politics.
Calm Texan J.T. Van Zandt calmly describes fishing as spiritual, while shorttempered Coloradan Alex “Xenie” Hall considers the pastime a manic race
for trophies. But they respect each other’s angling expertise, and after several
years apart they plan a winter fishing trip to British Columbia together that
could prove disastrous. Filmmakers Kahlil Hudson and Tyler Hughen create
a dreamy and mesmerizing documentary about personality, friendship, and
the approach to life that many can relate to.

BROOKLYN CASTLE is a documentary about I.S. 318—an inner-city school
where more than 65 percent of students are from homes with incomes below
the federal poverty level—that also happens to have the best junior high

he’d only rank fifth.) Chess has transformed the school from one cited in

Teddy Bear
PRESENTING SPONSORS Time Warner Cable
CO-PRESENTED BY Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas
WE’RE NOT BROKE explores how the government has allowed economic
inequality to develop and charts the growing wave of discontent that it has
fostered. Presaging the larger wave of protests that have arisen in recent
months with the international Occupy movement, the film follows a number
of activists who have had enough, and are demanding that corporations
finally pay their fair share.

Mads Matthiesen’s TEDDY BEAR is like a big warm hug…from a guy who
bench presses small trucks for fun but who deals with an attack helicopter
mother and socially debilitating shyness. So the champion bodybuilder
travels to Thailand to find his bride, but instead finds a more personally
appropriate remedy. But will his mother approve?

Olivia is a con artist who will do anything for her 10-year-old son, Bobby,
but giving him the best in life with no money coming in isn’t easy. Filmed in
Oklahoma and reminiscent of a modern-day Bonnie & Clyde crossed with
THELMA & LOUISE starring Milla Jovovich, Marcia Cross and Bill Pullman,
BRINGING UP BOBBY is the directorial debut of award-winning Dutch
actress Famke Janssen.
On a wintry day in Denver, Beth (Diane Keaton) saves a bedraggled dog from
the side of the freeway, and she forms a special bond with the pooch. But when
self-absorbed husband Joseph (Kevin Kline) loses the dog at a wedding, the
distraught Beth enlists the help of guests and a mysterious young woman in
a frantic search for the canine. DARLING COMPANION is an entertaining
continuation of Lawrence Kasdan’s tradition of producing movies with pristine
dialogue between flawed but forgivable characters.
Three high school boys are suspended on trumped-up graffiti charges. Despite
never having read it, they resolve to use the plot of A Catcher in the Rye as a
guide to post-school life and, more specifically, to losing their virginity. Crude
hilarity ensues in this uproarious endeavor by first-time director Andrew Edison.

Professional sports continues to morph into a casual wealthy man’s pursuit,
though the common fan is as rabid a consumer of sports than ever. AMERICA’s
PARKING LOT personalizes—and for Texas audiences, localizes—the shift by
telling the story of Dallas Cowboys superfans Tiger and Cy, two Texas Stadium
tailgaters who have to make hard decisions about the boundaries of their
support when the ‘Boys’ $1.2 billion new home opens. First-time director Jonny
Mars uses footage from four years of hard-core football partying, suffering
and rebirth to show us what it truly means to take ownership of your passions.
Through an abundance of wine drinking and emotional excavation, three
longtime friends who have grown apart learn that they must face the ghosts
of their tumultuous past if they ever want to rediscover the bonds they once

California wine country, SATELLITE OF LOVE explores what it means to

Single thirtysomething best friends Jenn and Matt want to make a baby
together, but they aren’t ‘together’: Jenn is straight, and Matt is gay. Inspired
by the short film that screened at DIFF in 2010, GAYBY explores the meaning
of family with effortlessly fast and intelligent dialogue, wildly entertaining
scenes, and frank hilarity. Come go GAYBY gaga!
Before introverted word nerd Zoe gains the courage to enter the National
Scrabble Championship in Chicago, she meets her emotional match in Marty,
an irascible recluse. Together they battle self doubt, family, co-workers and
wordplay adversaries to figure out what it’s like to be happy.

L.A. Confidential
The Revisionaries
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is Curtis Hanson’s tabloid tribute to film noir and the
sleazy side of ’50s Los Angeles. Based on the work of LA paranoia prince
James Ellroy, the movie gets its galvanizing yin and yang from a pair of Aussies:
Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce. Fifteen years after its release, the film
remains a lurid and bracing combination of craft and brazen entertainment—
one of the great Hollywood movies of its era.
Once every decade, 15 elected Texas citizens on the State Board of
Education influence what is taught to nearly every American child through
state textbook revisions. In THE REVISIONARIES, Texas filmmaker Scott
Thurman effectively captures the debates and the characters involved in
the highly politicized process, proving that political power and ideological
dogma still have an immense effect on what our children learn.

With arresting insight, vulnerability, and a delightful sense of humor,
Dallas native Terence Nance’s explosively creative debut feature, AN
OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY, documents the relationship
between Nance and a lovely young woman as it teeters on the divide
between platonic and romantic. Nance creates an exquisite tapestry
of live action and various styles of animation to delve deeply into his
young male psyche as he sweats and stretches toward maturity.

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
USA, 2009, 110 min., Color
One of recent cinema’s most alarming and frank productions, PRECIOUS:
BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE is a bellwether of urban
African American drama. In her breakout role, Dallas Star Award honoree
Gabourey Sidibe is Claireece “Precious” Jones, a Harlem teenager trying to
overcome the implications of poverty, incest, obesity, motherhood, disease,
illiteracy and a hyper-abusive mother played with Oscar-winning virtuosity
by Mo’Nique. With unusually competent turns by pop stars Mariah Carey
and Lenny Kravitz, director Lee Daniels’ film is exceptional in every sense
of the word.

Robocop
USA, 1987, 102 min., Color
DIFF, in association with the Dallas Film Commission, presents a special
25th anniversary screening of what is arguably the most influential movie
to be filmed in Dallas to date. Though the plot of provocative director Paul
Verhoeven’s first major American film is simple—cop dies, cop becomes a
near-invincible cyborg, cop saves a lawless city, cop disposes of his crooked
cyber-creators, all becomes well in the world—he weaves in commentary on
socialism, corporate greed, religion and manhood to strike a deft balance
between lowbrow and highbrow not previously seen in a big-budget movie.

Singin’ in the Rain
USA, 1952, 103 min., Color
By most accounts, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is the best movie musical ever
made. The hilarious Technicolor tribute to Hollywood’s silent film-to-talking
picture transition stars Gene Kelly (also choreographer and co-director
with Stanley Donen), Donald O’Connor and El Paso native Debbie Reynolds
in her first lead role, and features some of the most famous numbers in the
history of the genre (“Good Morning,” “Make ‘Em Laugh,” the sublime title
number), which were all written by producer Arthur Freed. What a glorious
feeling!

Still Life
Where Do We Go Now?
Emad Burnat, a farmer from the Palestinian village of Bil’in, famously chose
nonviolent resistance several years ago when the Israeli army arrived to
facilitate Jewish colonization. The destruction of five family cameras are
potent metaphors in a deeply personal documentary (Burnat shares director/
writer/producer credit) that vividly portrays a conflict many of us think we know.
In his latest film, Japanese master filmmaker Hirokazu Koreeda returns to
familiar ground, crafting a lighthearted tale of childhood desires and imaginative
adventures. Both playful and perceptive, I WISH is bursting with quick, stylish
montages, an energetic score and memorable performances from its young stars.
When a young man named Bernhard finds a set of instructions in a letter to
a prostitute—instructions written by his father—the life of his family is turned
upside down. STILL LIFE is the disturbing story of a family that doesn’t talk
much, but who all feel the need to act in very expressive and destructive
ways. First-time director Sebastian Meise ends STILL LIFE with a sense of
repression that is not meant to satisfy; it is meant to reveal, then close, then
leave up to viewers to open up again.
In Nadine Labacki’s politically charged musical comedy, the women of a

What if you could hire a substitute to ‘stand in’ for your recently deceased
loved one? What kind of people would perform such a macabre task?
What might result from both the surrogates and the grief stricken within
fabricated scenarios? In his absurdist tragedy, ALPS, Yorgos Lanthimos
takes a mordant and modernist approach to answering those questions.
INTOUCHABLES is a comedic tale of two drastically different men that meet
through a job interview: Philippe, an aristocratic quadriplegic, and Driss, a
Senegalese immigrant from the projects who becomes the former’s caretaker.
Loosely based on a real story and one of France’s highest-grossing films to
date, INTOUCHABLES is filled with life lessons and superb acting; Sy went
on to receive a César Award (France’s equivalent of an Oscar) for best actor
for his role in the film, making him the first black man to receive the honor.

Mariachi Gringo
Love, lies, memories, Proust, and sex go hand in hand in Cristian Jimenez’s
BONSÁI, a melancholic story about college sweethearts Emilia and Julio
as told by Julio in a fake novel that he’s writing to his new girlfriend Blanca.
Juicy, eh? By BONSÁI’s finish, you’ll feel the same sweet, nostalgic sadness
present at the end of a good character-driven book.
Love, music, and passion: young Edward lacks all of these in his dull Midwestern
hometown. So he journeys to Guadalajara, Mexico, in search of what he’s
missing, and he finds it—by improbably becoming a mariachi singer. A skillful
exploration of identity, family, and belonging embellished by the soaring
majesty of Mexican folk music, MARIACHI GRINGO will have the audience
singing mariachi at the top of their lungs, just like real-life genre titans Jorge
Negrete and Pedro Infante do today.

E.T. The Extra-terrestrial
Oblivion Island
Steven Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster is the ultimate sci-fi film for people
that don’t like sci-fi, making eight-year-olds and 80-year-olds cheer, fear and
weep with equal verve as Elliott, Gertie and Michael endeavor to save a tiny,
ugly and seemingly helpless being amid authoritative intervention and the
skeptical homogeneity of suburbia. Resonating with themes of friendship,
belonging, tolerance, and (ahem) alienation, E.T. is trans-generational family
cinema at its crest—a film for the ages, for all ages.
Before her mother’s death, Haruka was given a beautiful hand mirror. It was
lost and while looking for it she happened upon a tiny creature. Following
him, Haruka is soon transported to a magical world: Oblivion Island. There
she learns that the evil Baron searches for the one item that will give him
control over the land—Haruka’s hand mirror.
