FROM THE LEADERSHIP TEAM
Thank you to our School Captains and School Leaders for
a very moving ANZAC Service last Friday on the oval. The
students looked very smart in their formal uniforms and the new
blazers worn by our Seniors were a wonderful addition to our
winter uniform. Our Music Department is to be commended for
their rehearsals and preparation of bands and choirs to lead the
hymns. A special thank you to Aleah H and Annabel L for the
excellent playing of the Last Post and Rouse. A special thank
you to Mr Scott Matthews and all his helpers in preparing for
the service on the oval.
Thank you to all of the parents who attended the ceremony.
A special thank you to our guest speaker Mr Dominic Beirne,
Treasurer of the Clayfield-Toombul RSL Sub Branch and also to
Lt. Col. Ben Slaughter and Captain Paul Watson for attending
and organising the visit from the army vehicles.

As part of our four year Strategic Plan, Ascot State School
has commenced the phased implementation of the Digital
Technologies Curriculum. This has commenced in Term 1 with
Years 3 and 4 classes supported by classroom teachers, Rysia
Pritchard and Kristine Atkins. Thank you to Rysia Pritchard who
provided a talk and demonstration to our P&C Committee last
Wednesday.
The Department of Education states, “We need a reliable
pipeline of specialist STEM skills; but we also need informed
workers, users and consumers who have the curiosity and
imagination to be part of the broader STEM economy. This
must be underpinned by lifetime engagement for all Australians
with STEM, beginning in childhood and constantly renewed
as knowledge and technologies expand. (Office of the Chief
Scientist STEM: Australia's Future, September 2014, p21).”
Below is a link for parents to the STEM hub for parents and
students. I know many of our Ascot students have a keen
interest in coding, robotics, the Khan Academy and syphero
robots. Please explore this link for ideas at home.

Come along to our parent session to learn more about the four
areas and the mindsets that will assist you and your child to

Prep & Year 1 Perceptual Motor Program
starting this week – volunteers needed
The Perceptual Motor Program will start in Week 3 and continue
until Week 8. For the motor program students are split into
groups to rotate around different activities. To ensure students
get the most out of each activity, are safe and stay on task, it is
preferable to have adult supervision. This could include parents,
grandparents or another trusted adult. If possible it would be
great to have 3 adults at each lesson.
Year 1 PMP will be on Wednesdays and Prep PMP will be on
Thursdays. Times for each class are detailed below. Please fill
in the parent roster at your child’s classroom as we still need
lots of volunteers:

Author, Gabriel G:
"Stop crying, I’m coming!" Mrs Twit shouts.
“Why did you take so long?” Mr Twit whines. Mr Twit gets up
and redeems his broken ladder from the thistles and stinging
needles. Mr Twit stomps into the shed and comes out with a
brand new tub of HUGTIGHT. He gallops back up the ladder
and slobbers all of the horrible HUGTIGHT over the roof until
there’s only a tile full left.
"I missed a bit" snarls Mr Twit. He jumps onto the rough, brick
roof. Splosh! Mr Twit trips over the gutter and spatters onto the
HUGTIGHT roof.
“Help!” He yapped trying to get attention of Mrs Twit but Mrs
Twit was just too interested in feeding poison to her thistles and
stinging needles that she just couldn’t hear him. “HELP!” he
cries while balling his eyes out. “Why are you crying you hairy
monster!?”

STUDENT LEARNING – STUDENT VOICE
“Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The
correct question is: Did I make my best effort?” If so, he says,
“You may be outscored but you will never lose.”

Mrs. Twit laughed so hard she nearly bounced off her seat.
She took a breath and laughed, "You just ate a whole bowl of
butterflies!!"
Mr. Twit ran into the kitchen and drank a big glass of water until
he couldn’t drink any more. The horrible, mushy taste stained
his mouth. No wonder Mrs. Twit was smirking at him. It always
means she’s up to some trick which can’t be good at all!!!!
MOTHER’S DAY STALL: FRIDAY 6 MAY
Mother’s Day is fast approaching. This year
our much loved stall will be held Friday 6
May
in
the
School
Hall
from
8.30am–Morning Tea. All of the gifts are
$10.00 each and there will be loads of
beautiful gifts on offer. It is always a delight
watching the children choose something special. There will be
enough gifts for children to purchase not only for Mum but any
other special person in their life they wish to celebrate.
All classes will be allotted a time and they will be escorted to the
stall by their teacher. If at all possible, it is helpful and faster to
manage if the children can bring the correct money in a named
envelope.

If you are interested in assisting with the stall, whether it is
for the whole time or part of, please contact Kylie on

will feature a school-wide Free Dress Day on Wednesday 25
May 2016 for all to enjoy. All the students, maybe some of
our wonderful teachers, school staff and parent helpers will be
dressed up as their favourite hero or villain. I have heard a lot
of serious talk over the last week or so about Scooby Doo
definitely being a Hero, so the creative scope for costumes is
very wide!
Thank you to the parents and grandparents who have
volunteered so far to participate in Art Week 2016, Monday to
Thursday, 23rd-26th May -“ Heroes and Villains.”
FoVAD are still looking for many more volunteers to fill in any
of the lunch time spots on each of the four days:
Monday–Thursday 23-26 May 1.00-1.50pm. We need less
than an hour of your time and you will have great fun with
the kids - guaranteed! Easy and simple training is provided for
6
each activity for all parent helpers with a trained FoVAD team
member at every art activity station. We will roster you on to suit
whichever age group your child is in and on the day or days that
suit you, so you will always be helping with an activity where
your child is.
Please email [email protected] today with your
name, email, telephone number, year level of your child or
children and which day or days you are available to help and we
will be in contact.
Get out your super hero costumes now!
