The Department of Education states, “We need a reliable pipeline of specialist STEM skills; but we also need informed workers, users and consumers who have the curiosity and imagination to be part of the broader STEM economy. This must be underpinned by lifetime engagement for all Australians with STEM, beginning in childhood and constantly renewed as knowledge and technologies expand. (Office of the Chief Scientist STEM: Australia's Future, September 2014, p21).” Below is a link for parents to the STEM hub for parents and students. I know many of our Ascot students have a keen interest in coding, robotics, the Khan Academy and syphero robots. Prep & Year 1 Perceptual Motor Program starting this week – volunteers needed The Perceptual Motor Program will start in Week 3 and continue until Week 8. For the motor program students are split into groups to rotate around different activities. To ensure students get the most out of each activity, are safe and stay on task, it is preferable to have adult supervision. This could include parents, grandparents or another trusted adult. If possible it would be great to have 3 adults at each lesson. Year 1 PMP will be on Wednesdays and Prep PMP will be on Thursdays. Times for each class are detailed below. Please fill in the parent roster at your child’s classroom as we still need lots of volunteers: Wednesday on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are. They work hard to learn more and improve. We know that students who learn this mindset show greater motivation in school, better grades, and higher test scores. Thursday Author, Gabriel G: "Stop crying, I’m coming!" Mrs Twit shouts. “Why did you take so long?” Mr Twit whines. Mr Twit gets up and redeems his broken ladder from the thistles and stinging needles. Mr Twit stomps into the shed and comes out with a brand new tub of HUGTIGHT. He gallops back up the ladder and slobbers all of the horrible HUGTIGHT over the roof until there’s only a tile full left. "I missed a bit" snarls Mr Twit. He jumps onto the rough, brick roof. Splosh! Mr Twit trips over the gutter and spatters onto the HUGTIGHT roof. “Help!” He yapped trying to get attention of Mrs Twit but Mrs Twit was just too interested in feeding poison to her thistles and stinging needles that she just couldn’t hear him. “HELP!” he cries while balling his eyes out. “Why are you crying you hairy monster!?” Author, Sienna R: 11.30am–12.00pm 1D 10.00–10.30am Prep E Mrs. Twit yelled "Diner time!!" 12.00–12.30pm 1C 10.30-11.00am Prep B 12.30–1.00pm 1E 11.30am–12.00pm Prep C 1.50–2.20pm 1B 12.00–12.30pm Prep D Mr. Twit came stumbling out from the bedroom. He sat down and mumbled, "I hope this is not one of your horrible tricks." Mrs. Twit smiled uncomfortably as Mr. Twit gobbled the mushy thing down until it was all gone. 2.20–2.50pm 1A 12.30-1.00pm Prep A Gala Sports Days: Years 4–6 in Weeks 6, 7 & 8 Children should have selected their sport to participate in for the Gala Days scheduled for 20, 27 May and 3 June. Sports children can choose from include Tag League, Soccer, Rugby League and Touch Football (girls only). Netball is usually included in this set of Gala Days but because of unavailability of courts it will be included in the next set of Gala Days (Term 4). Children will receive forms once teams have been finalised. Alayne Graham, Prep-Year 2, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, [email protected] Paul Harris, Years 3-6, Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri, [email protected] STUDENT LEARNING – STUDENT VOICE “Did I win? Did I lose? Those are the wrong questions. The correct question is: Did I make my best effort?” If so, he says, “You may be outscored but you will never lose.” Carol S. Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success When students and educators have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence can be developed. Students focus Mrs. Twit laughed so hard she nearly bounced off her seat. She took a breath and laughed, "You just ate a whole bowl of butterflies!!" Mr. Twit ran into the kitchen and drank a big glass of water until he couldn’t drink any more. The horrible, mushy taste stained his mouth. No wonder Mrs. Twit was smirking at him. It always means she’s up to some trick which can’t be good at all!!!! MOTHER’S DAY STALL: FRIDAY 6 MAY Mother’s Day is fast approaching. This year our much loved stall will be held Friday 6 May in the School Hall from 8.30am–Morning Tea. All of the gifts are $10.00 each and there will be loads of beautiful gifts on offer. It is always a delight watching the children choose something special. There will be enough gifts for children to purchase not only for Mum but any other special person in their life they wish to celebrate. All classes will be allotted a time and they will be escorted to the stall by their teacher. If at all possible, it is helpful and faster to manage if the children can bring the correct money in a named envelope. 5 If you are interested in assisting with the stall, whether it is for the whole time or part of, please contact Kylie on [email protected]. FRIENDS OF MUSIC The month of May is soon approaching with an exciting line up of events detailed in Music News above. The Discos are one of the social highlights of the year which the children really look forward to. Friends of Music events like the Discos help raise valuable funds that support the excellent and highly regarded music program offered at Ascot State School.
