Website www.cnex.org.t Ben Tsiang (Guest Speaker, Founder and CEO of CNEX) This is a story of 3 Korean FTMs (Female Toward Male) who struggle to have their true lives. Synopsis This documentary portrays the diversity within FTM transgenders in South Korea through the experiences and life of three FTMs. Each individual has different processes of identification and diverse reasons why he wants to be an FTM, or has no other choice but to undergo FTM surgery: ‘H’ has always wanted to be a man with physical power and tough behaviour from his childhood; ‘K’ has been always confused with who he is, ever uncomfortable with and unfit for any gender role and only recently found who he has been since learning about transgender; finally, ‘J’, who met a girlfriend at a lesbian community, decided to be a man for a better career and to satisfy his girlfriend’s demands. This documentary also tries to encourage each of them to affirm their sexuality over the binarism of gender which is clearly divided into male and female. For non-transgendered individuals, it can be an opportunity to discover and expand their own perceptions of diverse sexuality. He is known for making dark comedy - hilarious, ridiculous, absurd and yet touching. Since his first short film, Bread Skin With Strawberry, was shown in the Malaysian Shorts series in the Malaysian Film Club, he has never failed to win the audience award. Flower In The Pocket is his first feature length film. Mother’s Day Special Feature Director Liew Seng Tat said that the film title and theme was inspired by the tradition of wearing a flower in your pocket on Mother’s Day. A red flower symbolizes that one’s mother is still alive while a white flower indicates that one’s mother is no longer living. Synopsis Recent Malaysian cinema has become synonymous with long shots and even longer takes, but Flower In The Pocket is possibly the funniest film. First-time feature director Liew Seng Tat hit the ball out of the park with the film as the rare debut feature to win at both the prestigious Pusan and Rotterdam Film Festivals. The story starts off amusingly with two Chinese-speaking brothers, Ma Li Ahh and Ma Li Ohm, as they both suffer through the indignity of school. While his father Sui shuts himself out from the world, the two brothers grow up with all the freedom of neglected children. They roam the streets; get into fights and other trouble in school. Along the way, they adopt a stray puppy, which becomes the most important thing in their lives. For the most part, father and sons live in different universes. When their puppy is sent away for being a nuisance, the boys are devastated. Their father suddenly realizes that he is still able to love and he’s going to do something about it before it’s too late. She is a self-taught filmmaker, artist, and social activist. An adventurous spirit full of passion for life, Ying wishes to share her enormous curiosity for human cultures with everyone through the New Asia Film Festival. As this year’s Chair, Ying is proud to be able to work with a dedicated team who has never ceased to strive a higher level of work. Lynn Chen (Vice Chair / Chief Graphic Designer) Lynn is one of the founders of the Society and the Vice Chair of this year. She always feels that through film, we learn from the experience of others. It’s a place to bring your mind to wonder. Ever since the first initiative of the event, Lynn has been the chief graphic designer. This year she has been working on a new branding for the New Asia Film Festival. She hopes this new identity can carry the mission of the festival across to the audience. Lynn recently graduated from Emily Carr University of Arts and Design with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Design. Her dream is to bring happiness to people through her work. Her favourite artwork involves the use of collage technique which helps her to expand the imagination beyond paper. Through three years of freelancing and volunteering, Lynn has gained experience in branding, event design, book design, as well as planning & promotional design. Rachel CW Fan (Director / Ex-Chair) Born and raised in Taiwan, Rachel immigrated to Canada in 2000 and lives in Vancouver which she considers as an eternal home. She earned a Master’s degree in Mass Communication at the University of Leicester, UK and now works as a journalist at a Vancouver Chinese daily newspaper focusing in the areas of cinema and arts locally and internationally. During 14 years as a reporter, anchor, author and producer, Rachel has experienced various forms of media, from newspaper to radio and television. These experiences provide her with the know-how to approach the media and film industry from a unique perspective: she relates to them by also working on their side of the fence. As a Richmond resident, organizing a film festival and encouraging more people to explore different types of independent films in our community has always been her dream. In 2008, this dream came true by building up Cinevolution Media Arts Society and then ran for the 1st New Asia Film Festival. Before this, she also organized the 1st Taiwanese Film Festival and Mandarin Cinema in Taiwanese Cultural Festival 2007. Apart from a full-time job and volunteer work in the cinema society, Rachel and her husband Laurent also enjoy family life with their 3 year-old son Lucas and are thrilled by their newborn baby girl Sasha. Laurent Saplairoles (Director) When he moved from South-West France to Vancouver, Laurent brought with him a keen interest for the 7th art. Over the years he has developed a particular interest in Asian movies, especially Taiwanese ones. Laurent currently manages New Asia Film Festival’s online platform. Su Jian Ping (Director) Jian Ping has been living and working in Vancouver since 1997. A graduate of Simon Fraser University, he was the founder of AsOne Studio, a student filmmaking organization in the university. He has extensive experience in both filmmaking and broadcasting works. He believes that film can serve as a bridge that connects all ethnic groups and helps us to understand each other. Jeannie Lo (Director) Jeannie is a new member of the Society. She currently is helping with fundraising initiatives, as well as maintaining the membership database. Jeannie is passionate about volunteering and can be seen frequently at many events throughout the Lower Mainland. Joanna Wang (Director) Jonanna studied commercial printing and has been working as a graphic designer for a couple years. She also has experience in filmmaking and acting. Besides a strong passion for film, she enjoys planting, and has also traveled extensively, as far as to Tibet and the Arctic Circle. Bo Liu (Director) Bo immigrated to Canada from China in 2001. Besides studying film and animation Emily Carr University, he has been working as videographer and photographer for the past few years. Due to his early years of sale and marketing experiences, he is working as the marketing representative at the Society. For forty years, he uses the equipment to share his new life abroad with those back home: images of snow, mini-skirted ladies dancing bare-legged, his first trip to an English supermarket. In exchange, his lover Yuzuko (33) who has been living with him in Normandy till then, departs for New York. Kamimura spends the summer with his family, and with the coming of autumn, Yuzuko returns once again, as Akiko and Mayu depart for Japan. Yuzuko, Akiko, and Mayu are surprisingly good friends, and the relationship of the four of them are quite calm. A calm, uneventful days pass one from the other. The only strange thing is that Mayu, whose 8YflkDXjXb`@nXeX Considered one of the most acclaimed Butoh performers in Japan today, Masaki Iwana is a rarity in that he still maintains the original Butoh spirit, having begun his dance career outside the “butoh genealogy” in 1975. Until 1982 he presented 150 experimental performances in which he stood straight, completely naked and perfectly still. Since then, in Europe as well as Japan, Iwana has presented his performances and workshops continuously, and has created works built on his sharpened aesthetic in more than 100 cities and 40 countries around the world. Iwana represents the institute for the research of Butoh – La Maison du Butoh Blanc, based in southern Normandy in France. The journey to the true love is filled with joys and sorrows. The secret to its success is through nurturing the former and overcoming the latter, similar to how cactus must find happiness facing the boredom in the dessert and discover the strength to deal with the adversities. The process may be full of hurts and wounds but the soul is crystal clear and the determination to the colourful dream is as hard as the gem. An artist or a creative artwork, like any splendid story or the formation of a new culture, is the result of endurance and perseverance which overcomes today’s harsh reality in the journey to seek true love.
