Deadline for each publication is the 15th of the previous month. EDITOR: Rev. Nicholas Anctil ASSISTANT: Gigi Longo and Espe Pappas Pastor's Message Dear Fellow Parishioners, Have you ever noticed that many of us see church attendance as an obligation and a troublesome duty, rather than as a gift? We need to be mindful of the fact that living in a society of many temptations and countless mixed messages, we badly need the encouragement of one another to help us become and remain strong Christians. It is only by supporting one another that we are able to avoid distraction, remain focused, and order our priorities rightly. That is why St. Paul writes "Let us not give up the habit of meeting together ... but let us encourage one another all the more." (Heb. 10:25). In visiting the shut-ins of our parish, I am struck by the fact that they who can no longer attend church because of physical limitation, appreciate this gift more than any others. Remarkably, however, their deprivation does not cause their faith to cool or their enthusiasm to wane. They eagerly wait for the sacraments of the Church to be brought to them, and many request and listen to the tapes of the Bible study classes, Sunday sermons, and daily meditations we make available to them. Their forced confinement is not marked by a decline in faith, but in a deepening of their spiritual lives What a lesson they provide for us! For those who attend church, they are a reminder that our presence at worship is not the fulfillment of a responsibility but the receipt of a gift and an opportunity for respite and renewal. For those others of us, all other superficial excuses aside, who are unable to attend worship because of illness, the limitations of age, the special responsibilities of our livelihood, or any other legitimate reason, these deeply spiritual people encourage us not to feel forgotten and not to allow indifference to undermine our faith. We are all a part of the church even when for good reason we cannot attend. Like the shut-ins, we too can pray for the church, for its ministry, its needs and its people. At the same time, those of us who are not limited must take the church to those who cannot attend. We must visit them regularly, bring them antidoron, and be God's presence in their lives. In this way we "bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." (Gal. 6:2). This year Great and Holy Lent begins on February 15th. I would ask you to commit yourself and your family this lenten season to becoming regular participants in t.he life of the Church through personal participation in the Holy Services and Sacraments. Just to update you with what's going on at our Greek School. January is a busy month. On the first Friday of the month, every class cuts a Vasilopita. Greek traditions related to this event are discussed with students and all students wait with anticipation to find out whose piece will contain the lucky coin. On the third week of the month, students take their Midterms Examinations and report cards are issued on January 29, 2010. The day of the Three Hierarchs, the Fathers of Greek Letters and Education, is also commemorated in January. Students learn about these three great men and prepare speeches to present in church on January 31st• From January to May, on the last Friday of each month, the "Reading-Buddies" Program takes place. Older students pair-up with the younger ones for some quality reading time and bonding. The older students read their favorite Greek book to the younger ones. The grades in the middle have competitions in Greek word games. These activities are done to implement the curriculum and make Greek school time more exciting. In addition, on January 23rd our PTA will host the Apokriatiko Glendi and we invite you all to come and celebrate Apokries with us. (See PTA's AD for more info.) In February we will have our annual Ice-Skating event. Our students will meet with students from other Greek communities in the Westchester area to skate under the sounds of Greek music as they develop new friendships. Details will follow. On Friday, March 19th, we will celebrate Greek Independence Day in the social hall and we hope that you can come to watch our children perform. The Greek Parade this year will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2010. We hope for a good representation from our community. More details to follow. Also, for those parents, parishioners, and their friends who wish to learn or improve their Greek, please come join us on the adult language level. The spring semester for the Adult Greek Language Program begins in February. Registration starts now. For dates, registration form, and information about the program please refer to the next page. Nicholas G. Anctil Pastor Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 10 Mill Road New Rochelle, New York 10804 On November 4, Congresswoman Nita Lowey attended the joint House and Senate luncheon hosted by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid honoring His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his recent visit to the United States. Our foreign policy must advance the values that empower people to speak, think, worship and assemble freely and to lead their lives with dignity. His All Holiness has long been a champion of religious freedom and peaceful coexistence and has helped to bridge longstanding divides. You would be pleased to know that I am a cosponsor ofH.Res. 838, which passed the House on October 28 and recognizes the importance of Ecumenical Patriarch Batholomew's leadership. This resolution echoes his call for Turkey to grant religious freedom and property rights to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. I also cosponsored H.Res 236 which calls on Turkey to eliminate all forms of discrimination, grant the Ecumenical Patriarch appropriate international recognition, safeguard religious and human rights, and respect international law, European Union laws, and basic tenets of human rights. I support Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's call for religious tolerance I will continue to press for the reopening of Halki Seminary and protection of the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It has always been my pleasure to work in Congress on behalf of issues of mutual concern. If you would like to receive my monthly e-newsletter or if I can be of assistance in any way, please call my office at (914) 428-1707 or (845) 639-3485, or visit my website at www.lowey.house.gov.
