56 crank turns to travel back in time.
56 times told and digested, the past turns into the present.
The hiroy at last recounts feelings, after all that’s whats left - feelings - before our histories become swollen with
pride and a capital H.
“56 fois et encore” is a subjective journey into the Hungarian revolution observed through archive records, a dive
into the heart of the 1950s of communist Europe: productivism, lies, treason, amnesia, an epoch which should by now
be rembered.

Like a puzzle, this film works on different elements:
- a guided tour in “useless” places of three cities (Brussels, Hambourg, Roma)
- a documentary about stray cats and the people who food it
- some choregraphy of daily gesture
- a question about cartography (and the common using of space)
- like a twinkle about the human Oder and disorder...
- and a statement on the present difficulties of the Uselessness!

During an operation, the filmmaker took a camera along with him. He plunged into unconscious.
We are here in the worlds he discovers, on the edge of words, on the boundries of the body.
This is were borders create painful separations, borders of a prison, the street, war, the mind. In this shattered
mirror of reality, others look at us, others who could be us.

This film evokes intertwined lives of three ephemeral plant works by Bob Verschueren,
which are installed in different places: in an abandoned coke warehouse, a beach on the North Sea and a covered
playground.
We follow the process of their creation and then their life within the world that surrounds them, that of nature and
man.
They both correspond and contrast with these places and reflect a fragile and ephemeral world.

LE CERCLE DES NOYÉS
(DROWNED IN OBLIVION)
Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd
2006
Documentary 71 min
HD 16/9 B&W
OV arabic, french (Sub-titles : french, english, dutch)
When the oldest of us understood that our destination would be Fort Oualata, he started to cry. He couldn’t imagine
that some men could send others so far away. (excerpt from the film)
Le cercle des noyés (the drowned men) is the name given in Mauritania to black political prisoners imprisonned
from 1987 in the old colonial fortress of Oualata. This film touches on the fragile process of unveiling memories by one
of these former prisoners who remebers his story and that of his companions. In a visual echo, the places of their
confinement come one after another denuded from any traces of that past.

MS VOLKERFREUNDSCHAFT
(A SUMMER TOWARD LENINGRAD)
Ulrike Knorr
2005
Documentary 56 min
Beta digital 4/3 color
OV german. (Sub-titles : french, english)
Ulrike Knorr offers us an imaginary stay aboard the MS Völkerfreundschaft, a holiday boat which, up until 1985,
carried meritorious workers, winners of the national lottery, sick people on cures as well as the regime’s privileged ones.
The journey centres on human beings and their stories, people taken off on a historic movement that is above and
beyond them. The cruise brings out all the contradictions of freedom on this boat. It also puts forth the idea of a boat as
a “replica of the GDR”, an island and a world of luxury on foreign seas.

About the war in Bosnia we remember above all names of cities like Sarajevo, Mostar, Bihac, Tuzla, Gorazde, and a massacre
in Sebrenica.
But we don't remember Visegrad. Because the western media never told about it, as nothing happened there, as Visegrad never
exist.
Visegrad still exist. It 's a city with a bridge in eastern Bosnia. A symbolic and majestic bridge, celebrate in the novel from Ivo
Andric. A bridge like a symbol, a pillory, a mausoleum, like a witness.

Mahaleo is the most famous band in Madagascar. In Malagasy "Mahaleo" means free, independent, self-sufficient.
The 7 musicians of the band have never fallen into "show-business" despite 30 years of success. They chose to remain
"amateurs" and they dedicate their efforts to a "real" profession aside from the music. They are physician, surgeons,
farmer, lawyer, sociologist or deputy. Driven by yhe strength of their songs and their activities our film will sketch a

HARIMANO
Aya Tanaka
2004
Documentary 52 min
Beta digital 16/9 color
OV japanese, french (Sub-titles : french, english)
Yasuo, a politically engaged Japanese teacher, has never stopped his fight, symbolized by the unions slogan, "Let
us never send our children to war", and the rejecting of the two national emblems: the flag and the anthem. By the end
of the sixties, after having participated in students' movements against the japonese alliance with the USA, he was
obliged by the autorithies to leave Harimano, his native village in the mountains of Shizuoka. His ideology, in Japan
considered as radical, has even more divided Yasuo from his origins and from Harimano, a place where medieval
feudalism and a devotion to the imperial authority characterizes the life of the people. Physically and culturally uprooted,
Yasua now perceives difficulties to face the return to his origins. He seems litre a sad man, getting old and succumbing
to alcoholism. Yasuo's daughter, who immigrated to Europe, is looking for her cultural anchors, too. She proposes him a
journey, backwards from Tokyo to Harimano, in order to retrace the thread of his own history and maybe find the
fundaments of his conviction.

CORRESPONDANCES
(CONNECTIONS)
Caroline D'Hondt
2004
Documentary 56 min
Beta digital 16/9 color
OV french, spanish (Sub-titles : french, english, spanish)
"Correspondances" is a quest, a journey that is based on the meetings between men and women, in the depths of
the subways of two cities: Mexico D.F. and Brussels. The film concentrates on elderly people, on their place in society,
their dreams, their worries. For although old age is looked upon as a serious illness that must be combated, that is
hidden, or ignored, the fact remains that elderly people have many things to pass on to us: they are our roots, our
memory. Gradually blurring the borders, we go from one subway to the other, from one person to another. Despite the
distances that separate people, they are the same everywhere. The cycles of life are the same all over the world: we are
born, we grow old, then we die. It is the codes that are different.

Every summer, more than one million moroccan economic migrants who live and work in wester Europe set off car
to visit their homeland. The Endless caravan is a documentary rod-movie which follows two second-generation
moroccans from the West as they undertake this intensive trip with their families. Along the road, the joys and sorrows of
their personal journeys lead us into the issues at the heart of their existence. Underneath the surface of our traveling
protagonists lingers a deep-roted indentity crisis which confronts them every day of their lives. Both born and raised in
Belgium, they face this struggle in different ways. For them, the annual trip is both a metaphor and a catalyst for a
double-life with one foot in the west and another in Morocco.

In 1965, a few weeks after the crushing og the popular uprising by the Soviets, my mother left Hungrary with her
parents to go to Switzerland. My mother never taught us her native tongue and never spoke much about her life before
her exile. It is as if the past had silenced itself within her. With this film, I'm attempting to undertake a two pronged
journey thought the words of my family and through the present day Hungary. I gather the little things that catch my eyes
and which resound with memories. What happens when one leaves the place of place of one's origin? What survives
through this rupture and what changes?

The girls in orange is a naïve and didactic film intended dor simple minds. At random, it has:A method for bleaching
gold fish, a way of classifying sexes according to colour of clothes, a formula for making soap bubbles, a way of winding
thread back on its spool, an observation point on roof tops, maxims for line fishing, attempts at dancing in quintuple time,
a theory about up and down, a procedure for communication with palms of hands, a way of singing out of tune, no

I travelled across Mauritania to find a tree that I saw from my window in Belgium. It wasn't a mythical tree, but rather
one that could be anywhere. On my way, I met men and women who shared their perception of this quest and in doing
so, in a roundabout way they shared some of their visions of the world and of existence. For some, my tree was the sign
from the spirits, of the invisible or a call from light. For others, it was the symbol of a history, a culture or the end of a
period in time. For yet others, it was a tree that you see only when you get lost... This documentary film, Far away roots,
is a poetic journey in search of elsewhere and in search of the other ways of thinking. It's also the story of an unfinished
love for a women who stayed behind...

Documentary 50 min

Arbres (Trees) is the story of the tree and trees. It begins with the Origins and then embarks upon a journey
through the world of the tree and the trees of the world. The film reveals the huge differences and slight similarities
between the tree and Man, investigating the fascinating idea that, amongst plants, the tree fulfils the role played by man
in the animal kingdom. Arbres is a voyage through a new dimension of the time and space, in which we meet trees that
talk and walk, that are sometines shy and sometime crazy ... Arbres will challenge some received ideas, starting with the
premise that though we often notice the animals that run along a tree's branches, we rarely notice the tree itself.

A Brazilian filmmaker, living in Paris for ten years, decides to trace back her distant Jewish and Hungarian origins
by following, in reverse, the journey her grand-parents undertook in 1937, from Budapest to Rio. Parallel to her
grand-mother's tale, she researches Brazilian and Hungarian archives, digs up treasures, questions her family in Rio
and Budapest. She wants to obtain the Hungarian nationality her grand-parents lost. This administrative request, this
political and historical plight, brings about essential questions on borders, cultural indentity and multiplicity.

The extraordinary and tragic saga of 267 congolese, brought to Brussels for the 1897 World's Fair. After some four
months of travel towards Belgium, they are exhibited before a million visitors. Subjected to the crushing gaze of the
"Whites" and the cold climate many fall prey to disease ... some lose their lives. The dead were hastily dispatched in a
common grave, sparking a fierce debate in Belgian society. The project was overblown, but necessary in the eyes of the
first coloni-sers, who presumed to have tamed the far-flung savages ... One hundred years later, Congolese compatriots
return to the scene of these events and question the "Whites" of today on the incredible story of that "human zoo". They
carry out the ritual of "a return to the earth" by way of reparation for too great a hurt ... A film that revisits a century of
stereotyped conceptions about the Africans. And running through it, the almost aching question: "How is today
different?"

The country of Jacques Debs, lebanon, has been at war for the past twenty-five years. The peoples of the Near
East have been tearing each other apart for nearly a century. Haunted by hatred, the director looked for anather East,
one which is not talked about, muffled, intimate; one which simmers in the kitchens and loses itself in a labyrinth of
identities ... A man and five women reveal to us the relation between the East and cooking and hospitality. Cooking may
be a source of alienation, a hindrance to freedom, but also a source of enjoyment, happiness and the pleasure of giving.
This film is a journey in four Near East countries at war: Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Palestine. A pilgrimage to discover
lost happiness...

country is the subject of the film which raises a double question: where do those who left the country draw their strength
from to live in exile and how do those who decided to stay live under the oppression of a totalitarian regime? And as
they return to their country, they wish to see themselves again as "being Czech". However, their return is like time out

"Will it be understood some day how we all perished?" wrote in his private diary Nicolaï Pounine, the Russian
avant-garde ideologist. The Russian revolution engendered not only one of the most dreadful totalitarian governements
the world ever experienced, but on the other side one of the graetest discoveries of modern art: the Russian
avant-garde. Specialists all over the world acknowiedge that Russian culture has engraved two remarkable pages in
world art history, icons and avant-garde. Malevitch, Tatline, and Filinou were devoted to the Revolution and the young

Four overlapping cases being handled by a rural law firm in the Haute-Auvergne. The film follows the handling of
twosales transactions, an inventory and a inheritance case. The firm becomes the scene of property and financial deals,
private conversations and secret exchanges, in short, the comedy of human life. The importance of words and the
scrutiny of such details as gestures, attitudes and looks reveal certain ways of the relating to the outside wolrd, notably
in matters of death and money. The painstakingly detailed approach to this closed notarial world allows us to witness a
series of tableaux in several acts, in which the characters ond their behavior seem part of another world, so close to our
own yet so distant, so different from us yet so like us.

VERS LA MER

Annik Leroy
1999
Documentary 87 min
16 mm B/W
OV german, hungarian, serbian-croatian, rumanian, bulgarian
(Sub-titles : french, german, english)
Vers la mer follows the River Danube from its source in Germany to its estuary in Romania. The film is shot in
lack-and-white, thus moving the landscape and people to a discrete distance from which, through the paradox of fleeting
observation, it brings them closer. Through te way she structures her images and observations, Annik Leroy is also
taking stock of the 20th Century. So many polical movements have shaped and disfigured the face of Europe during this
time. With a glint of melancholy passion, a Viennese café owner remembers the plaintive atmosphere of the
Austro-Hungarian empire. Scenes shot in Vienna's Karl-Marx-Hof tell of the Febuary battles of the early Thirties. Annik
Leroy, uses a long shot to recall the holocaust and mauthausen concentration camp. Vers la mer is a documentary
which evokes contradictory emotions and sensations. The borders between the countries the Danube crosses on its way
to the sea are like thresholds from one form of life to another. On the border between Austria and Hungary it reports
about the fear socialist ideology instilled into the minds and bodies of the local population

This is a film about the conversations that waft around us like smoke in a café… about ineffectual words that
nobody heeds, uttered by an holder generation who represent a large portion of the population in our cities today. This
film takes a look at a generation just starting to emerge : a generation of dynamic and concerned retirees. In their
confiding tones- between two errands in Brussels streets, in the smart tea-rooms of the beaux quartiers,or in the
eateries of the city's less affluent neighbourhoods - we hear them sum up or enlarge upon the day's events with all
savour of the good Belgian cooking.

1998
Documentary 86 min
35 mm B/W stereo dolby SR
OV german (Sub-titles : french, dutch, english)
After 1815 the composer's health degenerated rapidly and his haering worsened so much that he was no longer
able to understand all conversations, so visitors had to make themselves intelligible by writing in notebooks Van
Beethoven always had with him, until his death in 1827. Ana Torfs serene and severe film looks at Van Beethoven's life
through the unique records left in these conversation books. They contain the words that were literally addressed to the
deaf composer during some of the most important phases of this last years; they "conserve" as it were, what happened
all around him. "Zyklus von Kleinigkeiten" (cycle of trifles) provides an insight, albeit literally one-sided, into his every day
life and creates a unique picture of Beethoven in his natural environnement through very stylized and timeless
black-end-white scenes.

inheriting his uncle's business and estate. Unfortunately for Carlos, his uncle's life was full of secrets that were only
revealed in his will and through the tapes he left for his illegitimate daughter, Graca, the surprise heiress to his fortune.

series. These comic heroes, Africa's answer to Laurel and Hardy, were the delight of Congolese movie-goers. Never
viewed outside the continent, the films were to disappear at the close of the colonial périod. Tristan Bourlard has now
recovered the oiginal negatives in Belgium. Fifty years after their creation, this film reveals these hidden gems and tells
their strange story. Matamata and Pilipili are back on the screen.

woman from Antwerp, of Korean extraction. Belgian by adoption, she returns to the country where she was born and
whose language she never learned. But beyond the subdued stereotypes of everyday life? The filmmaker goes out to
meet the country's men and women. And there where nature and men's lives unfold, there will always be sounds that
break the silence, even in "the land of morning cam" Thanks to Mi Kyong - the interpreter who became the central figure
of the film - we delve a bit deeper into daily existence of these people across the globe, whose singular communist
experience has extended over more than fifty years.

Blind people meet sighted people in an exhibit whose aim is to question differences and similarities between the
blind and the sighted. Sighted people are placed in a simulated situation close to that of blind people, in an environment
subjected to absolute darkness. Blind people guide them. Their encounter continues outside the exhibit in normal light.
The film takes place alternatively in the light and in the dark. Beyond these relationships, the film aims to look at
prejudice or acceptation of differences – those between blind and sighted people and, more generally, those between
perceptions of reality.

Stéphane obsessively and repetitively committed to paper anything which came into his head. Being a jew, he used
Yddish in his drawings because of its grafic qualities. He painted portraits of such disquieting and mythical figures as
Pasolini, Rimbaud and Bacon. He painted larger than life images of creatures of the night, as well as a scries of
self-portaits in which he représented himself as deformed and mutilated. During the final two years of his life, Stéphane
was an neighbour of the director, and they met almost daily. Stéphane was murdered at the age of 25.

NIGHT TO L IGHT, A MYSTICAL E XPERIENCE UNDERR THE S ACRED
ROCKS OF METEORA, GREECE

Opéra filmé 52 min

OV english
Night to Light is a tribute to the power of Mozart's final unfinished work of art, Requiem Mass. Inspired by the music,
the man, the spirituality of the work - and the mystery surrounding its composition, Greek conductor Stavros Xarhakos
had a vision. A spectacular performance of the original composition proven to be written by the composer himself within
the last month of his life, enhanced by the awesome setting of Meteora. A natural wonder composed of more than a
thousand fossile rocks rising 300 meters and crowned with tiny monasteries. A forest of heavenly rocks, a divine
landscape which touches the soul with its austere majesty. A mystical experience, Night to Light expresses the
dimension of feelings and sensations associated with Mozart's words, "the night of death and the light that exists after
the dead" A performance which begins in a Greek amphitheatre opposite Meteora on a summer night under a full moon
and ends with the first rays of dawn, Night to light reflects the universality of Mozart's Requiem. Promise for the future,
free from any form of ideology. Night to Light is truly a legacy of hope.

1991
Documentary 52 min
16 mm color
OV french (Sub-titles : dutch)
Flying over the city's roofs the voice of an African storyteller takes us from one encounter to another in the everyday
life of Brussels Zairians. In Northern "Matongué" they search continuously for their country through music, colors and
words. By successive touches a mosaic of faces and silhouettes is filling the quietness of the district. They live with us,
they walk in our streets. They dream in our walls. However, our eyes rarely meet.

the European Cinema and Television Year (ECTVY) in november 1989. In an original and personal montage, the

Dirk Dumon
1989
Documentary 52 min
16 mm color
OV french, dutch (Sub-titles : french, english, dutch)
In Kinshasa, in Kinsangani, inside shops, bars and work-shops walls have their word to say. It is the language of
advertisement but also that of history, of mythology and social criticism. Masters of the streets such as Samba, Moke,
Syms, Mbuecky and other self-taught painters offer their visions of dream and reality with both humour and malice,
sincerely, on both form and content; an original artistic explosion filmed within its context of social and cultural stir.
