From Our Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
In two more days our Holy Father Pope Francis will arrive to our country and on the 23rd he will
celebrate the Mass of Canoniza on of Junipero Serra at the Basilica of the Na onal Shrine of
the Immaculate Concep on. So these are days of great joy for us! Because not only the Vicar of
Christ is among us but also a new saint – known as the Apostle of California- will be added to
the extensive list of those who followed Christ faithfully.
Therefore, as we expect the unfolding of these days as days of great blessings and joy for our
country and for all Catholics throughout the world, I’d like to share with you an excerpt of one
of the most exquisite le ers that the soon-saint-to-be Junipero Serra wrote to his friend Fr.
Francisco Serra before leaving for Mexico.
He wrote: “Words cannot express the feelings of my heart as I bid you farewell nor can I
properly repeat to you my request that you be the consola on of my parents to sustain them in
their sorrow. I wish I could communicate to them the great joy that fills my heart. If I could do
this, then surely they would always encourage me to go forward and never turn back. Let them
remember that the office of an apostolic preacher, especially in its spiritual exercise, is the
greatest calling to which they could wish me to be chosen.
Since they are advanced in years, let them recall that life is uncertain and, in fact, may be very
brief. If they compare it with eternity, they will realize it to be but a fleeing instant…
Tell them how sorry I feel that herea er I will not be so close to them, as I have been, to assist,
cheer and console them; but let them remember that the will of God should come first and
should be placed before, over, and above all things. It was for the love of God that I le them;
now, since I, for the love of God and with the help of His grace, have le them, it is but just and
right that they are also, for God’s sake, glad to be deprived of my company.
…It is in conformity to the will of God that they shall possess their souls and obtain eternal
life. Let them a ribute to none but God what they now lament, and then, and not ll then will
they experience how light and sweet is the yoke of the Lord; and what they endure as a great
tribula on will be changed into exceedingly great joy. This is no me in which to muse and
worry or be bowed in grief over the happenings of life, but to be resigned to the will of God,
and prepare ourselves for a holy and happy death. This is, indeed, the all-important business in
life; this one a ained, all the rest fall into insignificance. If we a ain Heaven, it ma ers li le if
we lose the whole world. But if we lose Heaven, all the rest will be of no profit.
They should be proud to have a son priest, though a poor and unworthy one, and a sinner who
every day prays for them in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and a great many mes offers it
especially for them, that the Good Lord may assist them and grant them sufficient means for
their decent support, pa ence in their trials, resigna on to the will of God, peace, union and
[…] strength to resist tempta ons and a acks of the devil, and finally, when the last summons
comes, a holy and peaceful death, in the loving embrace of God. Should I happen to be a good
religious, through the grace of God, then my prayers would be more efficacious and you would
not be the least in sharing in the profits thereof.
[…] One day, thinking that he [his father] was going to die, he called me and said to me: ‘My
dear son, this is my earnest request, that you be always a good religious of our Holy Father
Saint Francis.’ …these words are s ll ringing in my ears, and furthermore, it is in order to be a
good religious that I have taken this course of a missionary life. […] I know full well that my
mother has never failed to pray for me that I may be a good religious. Now, my beloved
mother, it may be that it is due to your prayers that the Good Lord has given me this voca on.
Be glad, therefore, of what God has disposed, and in all your trials say from the bo om of your
heart, ‘Praise be God! Let His Holy Will ever be done!’” (August 20, 1749).
May God bless you all!
