COLUMBIA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
HEAD COACH PAUL NIXON
Paul Nixon begins his seventh year at the
helm of Columbia women’s basketball
in 2011-12, looking to build upon four
straight seasons in the upper echelon of
the Ivy League.
Last season, Nixon led the youngest
squad that he has assembled at
Columbia to a fourth-place finish in
conference, which included a homeand-home sweep of Yale. The Bulldogs
finished the season in second place in
the Ivy League and earned a spot in the
Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
The road victory over Yale on March 4, 2011, marked a milestone in
the career of Nixon. With the win, he became the program’s all-time
leader in Ivy League victories as a head coach. Nixon achieved
the milestone victory in two fewer seasons (6) than any of his
predecessors.
Also in 2010-11, Kathleen Barry ‘11CC was named first team AllIvy League for the first time in her career, and became the first
Columbia women’s basketball player to be named to the Capital
One/CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team.
In 2009-10, the Lions won a program-Division I record 18 games,
including nine against Ivy League competitors. Columbia defeated
defending Ivy League champion Dartmouth twice, and opened
its year with a resounding 79-55 win over reigning Northeast
Conference champion Sacred Heart.
Also included in the season were a pair of near misses. The Lions
used an uptempo offense and high-pressure defense to lead Big
Ten opponent and eventual NCAA Tournament team Iowa by three
points with less than a minute remaining in the second half of a
November matchup. In early January, Columbia had a one-point
advantage on Atlantic Coast Conference member N.C. State with
1:11 left in regulation. The Wolfpack also garnered an at-large berth
into the NCAA Tournament in 2009-10.
After concluding the Ivy League season with a 9-5 record,
Columbia’s Judie Lomax became the team’s first Ivy League Player
of the Year and took home Associated Press Honorable Mention
All-America honors. The 5-11 forward became the first woman
in NCAA history to lead the nation in rebounding in consecutive
seasons, and was invited to training camp by the Women’s National
Basketball Association’s Connecticut Sun.
Nixon also mentored Sara Yee ‘10SEAS to her second consecutive
Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year award and honorable
mention All-Ivy League accolades. Yee was joined by teammate
Kathleen Barry as honorable mention selections.
In 2008-09, the Lions finished with what was then the most victories
in a NCAA Division I season of 13, and also boasted the second
national statistical category leader in three years. After Brittany
Carfora ‘08CC led the nation in three-point field goal percentage
(.519) in 2006-07, Lomax ‘10BC was the country’s top rebounder
at 14.3 per contest.
In his six seasons as the Lions’ head coach, Nixon has revamped
the way Columbia has played basketball. His style of transition
basketball and pressure defense is appealing both to women’s
basketball fans and the players in the program.
Nixon came to Columbia from Indiana University, where he
served as assistant coach for the Hoosiers from 2002-05. His
responsibilities included recruiting, game/bench strategy, scouting
and individual player development. The Hoosiers’ 2003 recruiting
class was ranked in the national Top 25. He also was charged with
managing the team’s academic progress and coordinating alumni
relations.
Nixon graduated from Vanderbilt in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree
in communication studies. He received a master of science in
health, physical education and recreation from Marshall in 1996.
Nixon prepped at Tattnall Square Academy in Macon, Ga., where
he was a three-year letterwinner in basketball and was his class
valedictorian. During his senior season, he was named team
captain and the team’s most valuable player. He earned GISA allstate honors in basketball. A three-sport athlete, Nixon also lettered
in soccer and track. He helped his track team win the 1989 GISA
AAA state championship.

SCOUTING THE TOREROS
The University of San Diego comes east, looking to improve its 4-1 overall record
against Columbia and Fordham. San Diego is coming off a 75-73 overtime win
against Colgate Monday. Thus far, the team is 1-1 on the road. The Toreros are
an offensive-minded team, as they are averaging 79.4 points per game with a
43.8 team field goal percentage. Senior Dominique Conners leads the offense,
averaging 16.2 points per game, and has 1,320 career points so far, fourth overall
on San Diego’s all-time list. She is one of three Toreros averaging in the double
figures, as Morgan Woodrow is averaging 14.6 points per game, and Amy Kame
is averaging 13.4 points per game. Kameron Knutson leads the Toreros on the
boards, as she has a 7.0 rebounds per game average.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SAN DIEGO
San Diego leads the all-time series between the two teams, 2-0. The last meeting
came in California in 2010, as the Toreros beat the Lions, 91-87. Prior to 2010,
the last time the two teams met was 1994, when San Diego edged the Lions, 7249. This will be the first time the two teams meet in Levien Gymnasium, as both
previous match-ups had been played in San Diego.
BIG GAME FOR BRADFORD
Sophomore Courtney Bradford is coming off a career-best game in Columbia’s
win over Army. Bradford had a double double, only her second ever, as she hit a
career-high 17 points, and a season-high 12 rebounds.
AMAZIN’ AMARA
Columbia first-year Amara Mbionwu was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
for the week ending November 13. She became the first Lion to earn Rookie of
the Week honors since Lauren Dwyer took home the award on Feb. 18, 2008.
The Bowie, Md. native averaged 6.5 points and a team-best 8.5 rebounds in
two games for the Lions, who fell to Vermont, 63-52, and Sacred Heart, 60-42.
Mbionwu grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 11 points against
Vermont. She shot 5-of-8 from the field. In the Lions’ next game, Mbionwu set a
new personal-best with a game high nine boards against Sacred Heart. After the
first week of action, she led all Ivy League freshmen in rebounding and ranked tied
for third overall.
MATCHED BY MIWA!
Columbia notched its second-straight Ivy League Rookie of the Week nod, as
first-year Miwa Tachibana was named the Rookie of the week for the week ending
November 18. Tachibana led the Lions in scoring that week, as she was 4-for7 against Wagner, scoring 11 points, a new collegiate career high for the Los
Angeles native. She went 3-of-4 from the free throw line, and recorded two assists,
one rebound and a steal.
DEAD EVEN ON THE BOARDS
The Lions battled under the basket for rebounds in each of their first two games, and
both times, the two teams came up dead even in rebounds. In the season opener
against Vermont, both the Lions and the Catamounts had 38 total rebounds, while
in the second game of the year, both Columbia and Sacred Heart had 33 rebounds
apiece. Both times, the Lions had more defensive rebounds than their opponents
(27 to 25, and 22 to 19, respectively).
LOCAL FLAVOR
Columbia has six away games in November and December, and all are within a
two-hour drive of New York City, with three of the six games within the five boroughs.
Columbia kicked off the away season at Sacred Heart in Connecticut, followed by
games at Wagner (Staten Island), St. Francis (N.Y.) (Brooklyn), Fairfield (Conn.),
Long Island (Brooklyn) and Fairleigh Dickinson (New Jersey).

SENIOR LEADERSHIP
COLUMBIA WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Once again, Columbia brings back two seniors, who will be crucial to
Columbia’s success in the 2011-12 season. Senior co-captains Melissa
Shafer and Jazmin Fuller will lead the Lions into the year. Shafer returns
as a starting guard for Columbia, and one of the top five all-time three
point shooters in Columbia history. Fuller saw action in 22 games last year
for the Lions, including four starts to close out the season.
LIONS CHOSEN SIXTH IN PRESEASON IVY LEAGUE MEDIA
POLL
The Lions exceeded the expectations of last season’s Ivy League
preseason poll, as the team finished tied for fourth in the conference,
after being projected to finish fifth. This year, the Lions will look to do
the same as the media has picked them to finish tied for sixth in the Ivy
League. Princeton, who went 13-1 in Ivy League play last year, garnered
14 of the 17 first-place votes to come in atop the poll while Harvard
(three first place votes), Yale and Penn round out the top four.
