HODGES HELPS USA WOMEN’S PAN AMERICAN
GAMES TEAM BATTLE TO SILVER MEDAL
Capturing the women’s basketball shiny silver hardware at the 2003 Pan
American Games was a bright-eyed USA team that began training only two
weeks prior to the event. It was a team made up young college players who faced
more powerful and experienced teams from Cuba and Brazil, both composed of
former Olympians.
Considering all those factors, the USA Women’s Pan Am Team’s impressive
5-2 record and capturing of the silver medal was a remarkable journey. The XIV
Pan American Games were held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and
women’s basketball saw six countries compete in the tournament held from August 2-9. The USA beat all but one — Cuba. Cuba (6-1) claimed the gold, the
USA got silver, while Brazil (5-2) captured the bronze.
Florida State’s Roneeka Hodges posted competition highs in points (11), rebounds (3) and steals (3) to help the USA team defeat Argentina. In the game,
Hodges continued her competition-long, defensive efforts adding one block and
one defensive board for the USA team in 16 minutes against Argentina.
“I’m a defender first, but whatever is needed I will step up and do,” Hodges
said.
The 5-11 guard shot five-for-six from the charity stripe and was perfect from
behind the arc in two attempts. The New Orleans native was one of five players
to score in double figures for the USA team as well as one of three to post three
steals in the game.
The FSU newcomer played in six of seven games and averaged 3.3 points,
1.9 rebounds in 13.2 minutes per game.
