Our goal is to help others deepen their spiritual lives within the context of community. Through worship, education and community outreach, we hope to enable the members of this community to bring their faith to bear on their pursuits within the Brown and RISD communities and beyond. How to give to BRCC The Brown-RISD Catholic Community (BRCC) encourages major gifts to Brown University. Did you know that all or part of these can be earmarked for the Roman Catholic endowment? While this does not aid the Becket Association’s fundraising to provide a campus minister, we do depend on the interest from this endowment to fund more than half of the student programming in the Brown-RISD Catholic Community. around manning Avete Valeteque O ur spring and summer were busy ones in the BrownRISD Catholic Community and they were full of transitions with many bittersweet endings and exciting new beginnings for many members of our campuses. We welcomed eight new members through the RCIA process culminating at the Easter Vigil, including three baptisms into the life of Christ. We also said goodbye to an impressive group of seniors, whose dedication to this community and example of faith will not be quickly forgotten. In addition, we said farewell to our long-time and much-beloved chaplain, Fr. Henry Bodah, as he prepared to become pastor at St. Francis of Assisi in Wakefield. While we were all excited for his new and well-earned position, we were certainly sad to say goodbye to him and spent much of the end of the year in celebration of his long and fruitful ministry here at Brown and RISD. Fr. Henry Bodah on retreat earlier this year. Although there is much to be said about Fr. Bodah’s service here, his impact is best seen in the token the students decided on for a parting gift. Eschewing traditional trinkets and clutter, several students, most notably Alex Blum ’16, spearheaded an effort to collect reflections from alumni from every year that Fr. Bodah served in campus ministry. So they reached out to alumni, using those connections to reach more and more alumni until they had received letters from each year, then compiling those into a hardbound book designed by Ryan Murphy, RISD ’15 specially created for our dear priest. We wish you well, Fr. Bodah and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for bringing so many students closer to God and into the fold of the Church here at Brown and RISD! continued on next page avete valeteque continued from page one The following text was taken from the presentation speech in which Alex Blum ’16 presented Fr. Bodah with the book of reflections written by alumni from each year he served at Brown & RISD. As you have hopefully heard by now, the members of the Class of 2014 are not the only folks who will be graduating this year. Our very own Father Bodah is moving on to serve as pastor at St. Francis of Assisi, and though we are thrilled for him, he will be sorely missed. We wish you well, Fr. Bodah and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for bringing so many students closer to God and into the fold of the Church here at Brown and RISD! When we heard the news of Fr. Bodah’s departure, we knew we had to do something for him… to get him some sort of gift by which he could remember his time with this community. Now as you may know, Fr. Bodah passionately spurns worldly possessions — around Christmas time, he fondly refers to Secret Santa gift exchanges as “those Secret Satan things.” And so the question was: what could we get for our dearest chaplain, who at times seems as though he belongs to a religious order, and has professed vows of poverty? Side note: I’ve always thought you’d be a great fit for the Jesuits, Father! Well we decided on a book… it would be simple, low-key, but potentially profound — an appropriate gift for a man who is humble, low-key, and often profound. But what book would best suit our purposes? Well we Fr. Bodah baptizes Jerome Colby ‘17 at the Easter Vigil while his sponsor Maria del Mar Fletcher looks on. knew immediately that it had to be nonfiction — for some reason, we didn’t think Father Bodah would be a huge fan of the Twilight series. So nonfiction. But at the same time, it needed to tell a story… to capture a journey. And it couldn’t be just any story… it needed to be a story that was worth being told. It also needed to feature a main Place settings at the Volunteer character from whose experiAppreciation Dinner called on time-honored “Bodah-isms” ences, triumphs, and failures, oft-quoted by students and staff. Fr. Bodah could gain some sort of insight. As we all know, that is no easy task, for Fr. Bodah is quite the scholar, he is a master of languages, and he is certainly wise beyond his years. So what book would best meet these requirements? If you’re drawing a blank, you’re in good company — I couldn’t think of one either. And so we decided not to… rather, we would write our own, or more accurately, we would let a story tell itself. We realized that while we may not be able to give Fr. Bodah a gift that would teach him some sort of lesson, we could bring a shepherd his flock… we could show a gardener the fruits of his labor. And so we did. This “book” is a compilation of reflections from more than 40 alumni spanning each and every year that Fr. Bodah has served this community. Now it’s been an absolute joy to work on this project, but for better or for worse, our work is not yet done — there’s room for a little more. Though we gathered reflections to cover the past 16 years, it is up to us to complete the 17th year. And so, as a single church bound by the essential unity of the body of Christ, each and every member of this community — freshman or senior, hardly involved or very involved, at this dinner or not at this dinner — is invited to contribute a reflection, which will be added to what we already have, and the final product given to Fr. Bodah as a parting gift. Now if there is one thing I have taken away from working on this project, it is that for the past 17 years, College Hill has truly been blessed by the presence of a man who has done — in an exemplary fashion — what the Gospel challenges us all to do… he has fought the good fight… he has kept the faith. Thank you Father — we’re gonna miss you. With Fr. Bodah’s departure, we embark upon a transition year of sorts. The Order of Preachers (Dominican brothers) has agreed to undertake our campus ministry as an apostolate beginning with a full-time priest in the fall of 2015. In the interim year, we are blessed with two brother priests who are also full-time professors at Providence College: Fr. Nicanor Austriaco and Fr. Augustine Reisenauer. See following page… welcome to the brown-risd catholic community fr. nicanor pier giorgio austriaco, o.p. fr. augustine reisenauer, o.p. W hen my students at Providence College ask me if I am first a scientist or a theologian, I tell them that I am first a Dominican priest, who in God’s providence also happens to do both science and theology. Not surprisingly, this response is often followed by my students asking me about my vocation to the priesthood. I am a priest because I met the Risen Lord while I was completing my Ph.D. at M.I.T. Before that encounter, I had been a Catholic all of my life, but my Catholic faith was something that was not really important to me. I was too busy doing my experiments and publishing research papers on cell aging and death. I was too busy trying to make myself happy. But I did not really know what would make me happy. But God is merciful. And He sent me to the Catholic Fellowship at M.I.T., a group of thirty or so graduate and undergraduate students who would meet every Friday evening in a classroom on campus to talk about our faith, to pray for each other, and to enjoy each other’s company. We also debated everything from faith to miracles, to apostolic succession, to angels and demons, to heaven and hell. But most importantly, these Catholic friends of mine had something which I did not have at the time. They had joy! And when I asked them about that joy, they told me that they were joyful because they had met Christ. I did not know what that meant. But the Catholic Fellowship challenged me to pray. They challenged me to ask God questions I had never even thought to ask Him: Who are you? Who am I? Why did you make me? What do you want me to do? Prayer, especially prayer before our Eucharistic Lord, introduced me into the adventure that is the Christian life. And it prepared me to meet the Lord, which I did on May 7, 1996. It was an encounter that forever changed my life. It was an encounter that made me realize that I was looking for happiness in all the wrong places. It was an encounter that called me to joy and to love. And it was an encounter that propelled me to the Dominican life, to the priesthood, to Providence College, and now to Brown University. I am excited that God has asked me to serve here. God is good. Fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio Austriaco, O.P. Dear Friends, I am quite thrilled to serve the BrownRISD community as one of the Catholic chaplains beginning this fall semester. Originally from Wenatchee, Washington, I completed my undergraduate (B.S., 2003) and graduate (M.T.S., 2006) degrees at the University of Notre Dame before entering the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and continuing my studies and formation at our seminary in Washington, DC. Since my ordination to the priesthood in 2012, I have very much enjoyed teaching theology and the development of western civilization at Providence College. My professional interests focus primarily on patristic theology and my personal interests on such outdoor adventure activities as backpacking, boating, skiing, etc.; various athletics, whether as a competitor or spectator; and such pursuits of leisure as conversing and contemplating, reading and recreating. I thank God for this upcoming year and eagerly look forward to contributing to our Catholic community at Brown-RISD. Blessings, Fr. She earned her Ph.D. from Boston College in 2009 and her B.A. from Fordham University. Dr. Clark’s lecture is entitled “Rejecting the Throw-Away Culture: Pope Francis & Solidarity.” She writes: “The launch of a new iPhone gets a bigger headline than homelessness and hunger. Pope Francis cautions us against this seduction by the new and trendy in which everything else seems to become disposable — even people.” Her lecture will focus on the pontiff’s challenge to us to reject the throwaway culture and instead, to embrace solidarity with one another. The lecture is Friday, October 17, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in Rhode Island Hall, room 108 (please note the location change from previous years) on the Main Green of Brown University. This is a free event and open to the public. This annual lecture is generously funded by the contributions of alumni, parents, and friends of Thomas Becket Association. You make it possible for us to continue the Catholic presence at Brown and RISD. Without your help there would be no Catholic campus minister here for our young people. the thomas becket association Fall 2014 Dear Friends of the Brown–RISD Catholic Community, Dear Friends, By the time you get this, I’ll have been ensconced for two months in my new parish. Seventeen years with the Brown-RISD Catholic Community (BRCC) passed quickly and I consider it a great blessing to have worked for so long with and for such a vibrant community of young people. One of the key elements in maintaining such an endeavor is the position of the campus minister who worked in partnership with the priest-chaplain, and we have been blessed over the years with a series of wonderful and generous women (and one man!) who have labored tirelessly on behalf of the community. I always maintained that the chaplaincy of the BRCC was only as good as the campus minister, a position which depends entirely on your generosity. There is no financial contribution either from the university or from the Diocese of Providence. While it would be true to point out that it would take nearly $150 today to equal a $100 donation in 1997, when I first became chaplain, I should like to emphasize something different from that. I›d like to make a plea to increase the number of donors, especially from the alumni of the 1990s and early years of this century. While they may not be able to give as much as the older and more established alums, it is of crucial importance that they support this ministry to the extent that they are able if the campus ministry at Brown and RISD is to continue into the future. There are several thousand alumni from those years who I know had a good experience with the Catholic community on campus and appreciated the w ork of the various campus ministers. Parents, if you have children from that era, I hope you will consider passing this request along to them. Many times, they have simply forgotten to update Brown›s data base, from which the BRCC gets their mailing list, with their present addresses. Now, as the BRCC enters a new era and prepares to welcome the Dominican Fathers to campus, Angie›s position as campus minister is more necessary than ever. Please consider doing your part to ensure the continuation of this irreplaceable ministry. Sincerely yours, Fr.
