COVER STORY VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE The First “CONVOCATION” of CURAJ Days full of hustle-bustle, noise, tension, construction and sheer hard work, finally took shape on the 1st of September 2012, the first Convocation ceremony at our campus. The ceremony was inaugurated by our chief guest Shri Kapil Sibal and guest of honour, Shri Sachin Pilot, in the presence of Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) M.M. Salunkhe and other members of the CURAJ family. The inauguration was followed by the entry of the Academic procession into the grand pandal, specially designed for the occasion. In quick succession came the annual report reading by the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Salunkhe and then came an encouraging and inspiring address by our guest of honour, Shri Sachin Pilot, which marked enthusing beginning of the ceremony. The enlightening words of our chief guest, Shri Kapil Sibal, Union Minister of Human Resource added a touch of motivation and prudent optimism to the entire ambience. “guru mantras” to succeed in life came, from his mature lips as time tested guidelines to the raw talent of the young students . Just Identify your passion; there is no dearth of opportunities; just look for them at the right place; always strive for excellence; value hard work and work smart; make a difference and build character– these were the pearls of wisdom he scattered among expectant youngsters. Finally came the most awaited moment when the graduates were bestowed with the degrees in recognition of their acquisition of knowledge. We had non other then Shri Kapil Sibal to do the honour. The super senior batch of the CURAJ family, were appreciated profusely for their hard work and dedication. The ceremony closed with singing of the national anthem and finally the exit of the academic procession. This being the first experience for each one of us, proved to be learning as well as a tiring experience, at the same time equally enjoyable and full of positive energy. The grandeur and the serenity with which the event was organised added to the beauty of attaining and giving away of the degrees. Although the ceremony has ended, the hues of its magnificent charm continue to influence every soul at CURAJ. Another memory added to the CURAJ family album. Mansi Vinaik M.A. Economics Sem I 3 UNIVERSITY NEWS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE Letters To The Editor On _____________________________ Excellent team work and creativity by designer Sh Mukul and other team members. History is replete with facts that artists, thinkers, philosopher etc. have always enjoyed solace and solitude far away from power structure, greed and insecurity. They enjoy their fulfillment by putting in the efforts of creativity irrespective of others’ recognition. For them ‘Work is not just Worship but much more. They get their reward, fulfillment and their GOD just by getting absorbed in their WORK. They are not attention seeker or slaves of recognition by someone outside. They don’t work for certification or funds but to channel their creativity and stretch the contours of their ability. That’s why they are larger than life. They do not follow power. Power follows them. Of late it was being discussed that ASTITVA should be associated with some incentive. Published copies should be circulated to others. Innovation and value addition was directed towards printing extra copies or raising income by advertisement etc. I do not refute or disrespect such ideas but is this what we started ASTITVA for. I always believed it as a platform for self-evolution, expression and creativity. Sh Mukul reinforced such commitment and resolution. The last issue indicates that team ASTITVA is evolving and the philosophy is being absorbed. Thanks Mukul & Priyank. I hope your further efforts regarding e-board and website shall further deepen these eternal principles. The slogan suggested by one of the team members viz. “No Paper, No Money & No Hirearchy” exhibits this philosophy and is a reflection of freedom from impression management over others. The current issue of ASTITVA has accommodated a few historical anecdotes related to power play in the world of editing and writing to highlight that greed centered psychologically bankrupt personalities had always been there. Such powerful blockheads like Thomas Bowdler, Comstock, James Granger etc had always been and will always be. They suffered from the myopic vision and tried to tailor the world as per their narrow interpretation. But creative artists should not refrain from their sincere pursuit. Our ASTITVA is a free platform for surpassing our own past efforts and not to gain attention or recognition from others. Further the efforts and endeavors of all are praiseworthy and inspiring to me. I respect their efforts and viewpoints. Congratulations to all for building up the synergy. CS - III Sem 5 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, SPIRITUAL AND MOTIVATIONAL PAGE “Every part of supremacy is in you, concern yourself” A question that fills us with vigor to think how one’s personality can be made extraordinary? Does one have something extra that makes one more successful than others? Yes ! he/ she has an insight to recognize self strength & this is what makes a great difference between a looser and a winner. Self recognition gives confidence, self-esteem and courage to be capable of everything. Now the question arises, how one can develop this insight (to recognize oneself)? One only need start believing in one’s own ideas and their potential to take concrete shape. Self recognition makes you value that is in YOU and it will invigorate your real strength which is hidden inside you as much as in others. YOU alone can showcase your individual talent. The only thing required in the whole process is your WILL POWER because strength can be fruitful only if you really want to do something for yourself. It’s a common notion that everyone lacks in one or the other way but positivity & creativity can work wonders no matter how much one lacks in any field. It is optimistic outlook on life which alone can help one strike a balance between self- worth and the surroundings. Such a positive attitude can bring marvelous changes in one’s life. This blend of positivity and enthusiasm does lead life towards achievement of satisfac- tion and intellectual development. The outward world is always in conflict with the inner world but what can make one overcome all the external obstacles is self-belief. In other words, YOU ARE OK AND I AM OK attitude helps one balance the external and the internal forces harmoniously. By way of conclusion, the secret of success lies within YOU. So keep trusting your own decisions and keep living life of your choice and on your terms. Sucheta Jangir M.A. English- III Sem Spiritual Thought I am God Almighty, I am the Light of the world like the sun. Neither defeat, nor death, can ever approach me. I am the controller of the universe, know me as the Creator of all. Strive ye diligently for the acquisition of power and wealth such (as true knowledge). May ye never lose my friendship. When words touch your intellect, it gives you a feeling of knowing it all. You know one line but if you know it through intellect, you will speak ten. But when words touch your heart, there is an exclamation, something is kindled; a wave or a fountain arises and then there is no need for any words. Puran Singh Shekhawat M.Sc. Physics– III Sem 6 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, BUSINESS AND ECONOMY PAGE CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Corporate Social Responsibility is defined as “the process of assessing an organization’s impact on society and evaluating their responsibilities. It begins with an assessment of a business on its Customers, Suppliers, Environment, Communities and employees. It provides frameworks for a successful enterprise that is harmonious with its surroundings. ” Corporate Social Responsibility is not a new term today. Government Of India in fact has been trying to mandate for the for the relatively flourishing and big corporate houses to expend at least 2% of their net profits on Corporate Social Activities, however, due to vehement criticism from the other end these activities have been rendered voluntarily. Corporate Social Responsibilities could be classified as per recent literature as: 1. Ethical Corporate Social Responsibility: It refers to fulfillment of a firm’s economic, legal and ethical responsibilities as a moral duty. 2. Altruistic Corporate Social Responsibility: This can be defined as fulfillment of an organization’s philanthropic responsibilities, going beyond preventing possible harms (ethical Corporate Social Responsibility) to help alleviate public welfare deficiencies, regardless of whether this will benefit the business itself or not. 3. Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility: This can be best interpreted as doing corporate community service activities that accomplish strategic business goals. TERI has undertaken an extensive research study which presents the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility in India. It is seen to be based on largely four models namely- Ethical model based on trusteeship, Statist Model, Liberal Model and stakeholder Model. In India there are numerous examples of successful Corporate Social Responsibility Activities but yet these activities in India are in its infancy. Nonetheless, as part of corporate social responsibility, Indian companies’ contribution pattern mostly includes setting up schools, hospitals, community development, women empowerment, planting trees, and nurturing art and culture. These are of course noble gestures, but more in the nature of philanthropy, remotely connected with their core business. Such initiatives are unsustainable, and can happen only till the point the company is profitable; more importantly, these ‘giveaways’ per say will not drive the company to remain profitable, as they are too small in scale to make any significant enhancement to the profit earning capability of companies. Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy are different. Philanthropy is generally done without expectations of any returns; it is ad-hoc giveaways, which is less related to the core operations of the company. Contrarily, Corporate Social Responsibility is more of a ‘focused’ form of philanthropy directed towards specific stakeholders with clear expectations of a continued profitability in the long run. Corporate Social Responsibility, too often is used as business jargon, which means different things to different organizations. For some companies, CSR is almost synonymous with philanthropy. From charity donations, planting trees to corporate volunteering, these companies pursue such activities as a means to build a good brand image. This is also accentuated by the fact that 7 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, rising public rampage against the evils of capitalism, the “need” to adopt Corporate Social Responsibility as a reputation (or risk) management tool has become more real than ever. HINDUSTAN UNILIVER — AN EXAMPLE Hindustan Unilever (HUL) invests in research, working with nutrition and health specialists in its ‘ready to eat’ food business striving to reduce salt to the recommended dietary levels, reduce trans fat from vegetable oil, sugar from ready to drink tea, and drastically cut calories in children’s ice creams. In its personal care business, it is moving towards ‘dry shampoo’ which refreshes hair between washes, reducing hot water consumption thereby reducing global warming. It is BUSINESS AND ECONOMY also systematically promoting ‘regular hand wash’ as a habit to reduce communicable diseases in adults and children. The packaging for Vaseline has been reengineered not only to cut plastics, reducing energy consumption but also made the product visually more appealing and functional. These initiatives not only position the products distinctively vis-à-vis the competitors and enhances brand equity, but also ensures well being of customers and the environment. Some people consider examples such as this to be “strategic Corporate Social Responsibility” but I believe a more appropriate description is “Corporate Sustainability”. PAGE implies a reactive approach i.e. the company is obliged to giving back to the society (to ease its conscience) for all the money it makes. By contrast, Corporate Sustainability is “a proactive strategy to ensure an organization’s long-term growth, taking a balanced development approach to profit, people and planet. It is a business approach that creates long -term shareholder value by embracing sustainability opportunities while at the same time successfully reducing and avoiding sustainability costs and risks”. Mrinal Chadha M.A. Economics—I Sem Corporate Social Responsibility, as suggested in its name, For Peace….??? Norway's Nobel Committee handed its 2012 Peace Prize to the European Union, even as the bloc faces its most serious crisis since it emerged from the ruins of two world wars, an award that served as both endorsement and warning. The committee, whose decision Europeans both celebrated and mocked, said the prize recognized more than six decades during which the conflict-ridden continent pulled together and became a harbinger of "peace and recon- ciliation, democracy and human rights" at home and be- yond. The EU has transformed most of Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace", Nobel Committee Chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said in announcing the award in Oslo. The prize may also be a wakeup call for Europe to take a stronger role in international affairs. The EU is the world's biggest donor of humanitarian aid, but its members have often struggled to take a common view on important foreign-policy events. Nimisha Gupta M.Sc. Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Pri- yanka Chopra, Illeana D’Cruz, Saurabh Shukla, Roopa Ganguly, Jishu Sengupta Director: Anurag Basu Producers: Ronnie screwvala, Siddhartha Roy Kapoor Duration: 120 minutes Rating: Barfi is a pleasantly different film, only it isn’t an extraordinary one. That’s because despite the brilliant characters and setting, the film doesn’t have an extraordinary story to tell. Although this film is about a deaf-mute man and his search for love, it is told with humor and sensitivity. Barfi is born to a poor couple in Darjeeling. His mother passes away shortly after his birth and Barfi- discovered to be deaf - is brought up by his driver father. Barfi is not a shy guy, he is a mischiefmaker, an attention seeker and warmly demonstrative with all those he is attached to. He follows young girls like Shruti and falls in love with her and although Shruti is attracted to him, she prefers to be sensible and marry the man her parents have chosen for her. Barfi is also deeply attached to the neighborhood rich girl Jhilmil who is autistic and whose own parents find her difficult to love. The film is about Barfi's love for these two women and their love for him. As Hindi films go, Barfi is also slightly off-center in its notions and motivations of romantic love. It ruminates on love and how it thrives in the way Barfi and Jhilmil and Shruti need and trust each other. But the story’s greatest strength is its cheer and charm. Director Anurag Basu offers a film which is lovingly detailed, with warm fuzzy layers and golden hues. Pritam’s music and background score matches the warm cheerful hues of the film. The only problem is its constant and incoherent time switches. The flashbacks are disjointed and it’s difficult to figure out the chronology of the story within the different time zones in the film. Ileana makes a mature debut. Priyanka does a super job. Her character is awkward ungainly and mistrustful but thoroughly lovable. Priyanka manages to infuse her autistic character with charm and intelligence. Ranbir, of course, rocks. He bears the vain, mischievous, darling Barfi with such ease and grace. All in all, Barfi is warm, tender, spirited and really funny –a truly delightful film. This was India's best performance at the Olympic Games ever in terms of medals won. India won 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals. India finished 55th in the overall Medals Tally, 5 behind their rank at the Beijing Games in 2008. But the way Indian athletes performed was really heartening to see. India’s first Medallist was Gagan Narang who won a Bronze Medal in the 10 m Air Rifle Event. Gagan Narang was a big Medal Hope and he delivered the goods when required. He had missed out on a medal at the Beijing Games but made up for that loss in London. India got its Second Medal in shooting too. Vijay Kumar had shot 30 out of 35 in the Finals to finish second. India's Badminton Sensation Saina Nehwal had huge expectations on her back and she did perform well. She won her Bronze Medal match after her Chinese opponent was forced out of the match due to an injury. But in the process, India got its third Medal, in the form of a Bronze. From one lady to the other, MC Mary Kom punched her way into a Medal. She was splendid at the Games, but lost her Semi Final bout, only to win a Bronze. India’s last two Medals came in the last two days of London Olympics and that too in Wrestling. The 29year-old Yogeshwar Dutt won a Bronze Medal after he came back in the Medal contention after winning type repechage round matches. His way to the Bronze Medal was full of drama. India's Best was still to come and this time it was India's Golden Boy Sushil Kumar, who won a Silver Medal. He became the first Indian athlete to win two Medals in an individual event at the Olympics. Sushil Kumar had won Bronze at Beijing and this time he did a step better to grab the Silver Medal. We all should be proud of these 6 athletes as they made India proud at the greatest stage. Though there were a few disappointments in Vijeneder Singh, Abhinav Bindra, Ronjan Sodhi and Deepika Kumari. India still did pretty well. Hope India carries on the good work and wins plenty of Medals at Rio de Janerio in 2016. Naveen Sharma M.A. CMS - III Sem 11 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE REMEMBERING THE MILKMAN OF INDIA In spite of being one of leading nations in cattle rearing and breeding, India was not self-sufficient in milk production. This battle was won with the help of a mechanical engineer who later became, “the Milkman of India”, Dr. Varghese Kurien. Dr. Kurien was 28 when he came to Anand, Gujarat, in 1949, and was soon working hard to help a budding cooperative to grow. For him the dairy farmers were the rightful owners of the milk business. Kurien revolutionized the milk industry when he produced milk powder from buffalo milk while the rest of the world was using cow milk for the same. The story goes that India’s ‘milkman’ never consumed milk himself as the taste didn’t quite agree with him. Matters of his own palate, however, did not deter him from launching ‘Operation Flood’ or creating the ‘Taste of India’. Kurien replicated the Anand model throughout India as “Operation Flood”, making India one of the world's largest producers of milk. Today over 10 million farmers across the country at 200 dairies produce over 20 million litres of milk a day. Kurien was founder chairman of both the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets brand Amul and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).The GCMMF of Amul fame was Kurien’s brainchild. Amul, which began its journey as the Kaira co-operative with just two village dairy cooperative societies and 247 litres of milk, has grown into a Rs11,668crore brand with milk collection of 3.88 billion litres. As the architect of Operation Flood — the largest dairy development program in world — he helped modernize the model of co-operatives. He also served as founder chairman of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) in Anand, where he had arrived on May 13, 1949 as a dairy engineer appointed by the Government to look after the operations of Government Research Creamery.Dr. Kurien left us on 9 September 2012 after a brief spell of illness in Nadiad, near Anand in Gujarat. He was 90.During his life time he won numerous awards which include the Padma Vibhushan , Padma Shri , World Food Prize etc. Although he is no more with us but he has surely made our lives “Utterly butterly delicious!!” Mansi Vinaik M.A. Economics– Ist Sem. 12 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE A Journey from Moon to Heaven 25 August 2012 was a sad day for entire world. Fondly called 'Kaka', who passed away here Wednesday (18 July 2012) following prolonged illness. Known for his shy smile and flamboyant looks, Khanna was often referred to as Bollywood's first real superstar, someone who had a fanatical fan base among women, thanks to the many romantic hits in which he starred during the 1970s.The 69year-old actor died of an undisclosed illness. Plunging his fans into grief and prompting glowing tributes from the Indian film industry. His admirers lined up on the streets as a flower-bedecked truck carried the actor's body in a glass casket with white flowers. Khanna's estranged wife Dimple Kapadia, son-in-law Akshay Kumar and grandson Aarav accompanied the body. People clung to railings, climbed trees and held up his portraits, hoping to catch a last glimpse of ‘Kaka' as he was affectionately known. Television channels ran special shows on his films and social networking sites like Twitter were full of tributes to Khanna. “The word 'superstar' was invented for him, and it shall ever remain his, and no others," Life came to a standstill after Carter Road’s most famous resident Rajesh Khanna breathed his last. All roads leading to Aashirwad, the sea-facing bungalow of Bollywood’s first superstar, were blocked by the police. The number of people at the bungalow started swelling on a day when rain did not stop pouring. The mood, however, was more nostalgic than sad. The area — which on a regular day is abuzz with activities thanks to multiple hang-out joints in the neighbourhood — wore a solitary look as traffic was diverted. Khanna, who was brought home from the Lilavati Hospital on Monday afternoon, once again pulled a huge crowd in front of his home. In the height of his popularity, this address used to be a favourite destination of fans and people from the film industry. Veteran actor Raj Babbar followed soon after and spent a considerable amount of time with the grieving family. The aim of the day is to raise awareness of and concern for literacy issues around the world and since its inception the day has become a special occasion. In 1990 the UN gave international literacy a boost by proclaiming the year as International Literacy Year. Literacy is a means of personal liberation and development and is a means of providing individuals with a method of developing faculties that will improve their economic status and general wellbeing. It can instil values of national identity, tolerance, conserva- tion of resources and the importance of community .Literacy is not simply about educating. It is a unique and powerful tool that can eradicate poverty and promote social and human progress. Through literacy all can acquire a basic education. Knowledge thus gained can lead to eradication of poverty, reductions in infant mortality, understanding of issues such as family planning and gender equality, constant development, peace and democracy. A good quality basic education will equip people for life. Literate parents are more inclined to send their children to school and literate people are more inclined to take advantage of continuing educational opportunities. Educated societies are better equipped to keep pace with pressing developments. The UN estimates that there are some four billion literate people in the world, but there are also around 775 million people who still do not have basic literacy skills. Put another way, one in five adults world-wide is illiterate and two-thirds of them are women.75 million children do not attend school and many more only attend irregularly. Nearly 35 countries have a literacy rate of less than 50% and a population of more than 10 million are illiterate. 85% of the world's illiterate population lives in these countries. A literate community is a dynamic community, one that exchanges ideas and engages in debate. Illiteracy on the other hand is an obstacle to a better quality of life and can even breed exclusion and violence. This is how one very old story runs about the creation of our universe and the Benevolent father said unto the being ‘Look Ye’ Oh Men , I have created also the land, the water, the air, the fire and many other beauties for you, see that you use them properly. Time passed and more of it passed when man throughout the world felt that with the advancement of civilization and industries through the creation of God, was utilized to maximum but he was loosing the contact of nature every day. Both the ancient man and the man of the day are the ardent lover and admirer of the beauties of the nature. He enjoys the closer contact of nature, the water, the woods, the mountains, and the snow; there he enjoys the morning breeze, the nightingale, sweet songs, and the rhythmic sound of the grass on the ground. One fine morning when he was lost in the nature, the blazing sound of the factory siren filled the atmosphere, the puzzling sound of automobiles started disturbing him, he was tired of his own creations, he felt like running away farther & farther from this tortured, fatigue, nausea, Neurosis and stereo type city life. He himself has created a hell for himself. He was puzzled and then in a flash, came the voice of his father, ‘Look ye oh man’ I have created also the land, the Water, the Plants, see that you use them properly. The problem was solved. The next moment, the man thought of preserving & developing the natural features, the creation of open spaces for human recreation which could give him peace, remove his tiredness, increase his efficiency, his health when he was tired of man made Synthetic environment. Bhawana Yadav M.A Economics- III Sem One thing you can’t recycle is wasted Time “Time is free, but it's priceless. You can't own it, but you can use it. You can't keep it, but you can spend it. Once you've lost it you can never get it back.” Yes, it’s sure and certain that time is like a river. As the current of the river flows ahead and never comes back, same is with time, once lost it can’t be regained. Time is like money, yet more valuable than it. Every day, hour, minute, second is precious for us. As we spend money wisely, in the same way our time should be spent very cautiously. For this time management is very essential. Another famous maxim goes, “A stitch in time saves nine". However we always misuse it. Its proper utilization is very necessary. It’s truly said that, “Don’t count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count.” we got to be very punctual and studies in our lives about time. A farmer has to harvest his crops on time but if he neglects, the birds will eat those crops or untimely rain may destroy it. The whole world runs along with it. If anyone remains back, he surely will be described as a loser in his life. A successful man only knows the value of time because he has come up with proper use of time jointly with hard work. So, time should not be procrastinated instead every single second should be used carefully. Then only, a person will touch the sky of success. Narendra Jarwal M.A. Economics – III Sem 18 STUDENTS’ CANVAS VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 PAGE EDUCATION On Education The role of education in a nation is foremost to delineate the future of students. The foundation of a country and its unborn time only hinges upon its educational regimentation and organization, not just on its geographical structure and population. History can put forward innumerable evidences of this regard that only a few educated people ruled over the most populous countries. Good education can influence our society to a great extent. The development of a nation depends on its education system and scholars who stay alive here and have desire for excellence, not by its theatre craze and luster. No doubt that the troopers of Waterloo were trained in schools and universities of England, not on its harbour’s borders. To get education is not merely to get a job but the most is to build the character and to train human brain in such a way that we can get ready to cope up with circumstances, come what may. And second one is that we can feel for others. If the modern technology and education system is compared with ancient education, then we are much behind. In a wink of eye so many things can be invented. Remote can push the missiles, airplanes fly automatically, trains operate without fuel and even surgery can be done without operation. But what is the use of this kind of technology and education that we can’t support a poor old man who is in painful condition in the middle of road and we cannot stand up for a vulnerable soul. that we are educated but we are unaware that we are on a crossroad and all the lights of it has been turned off, now we are surrounded in shadow. We don’t know where we have to go and in between what type of hurdles will come, how can we reach our final destination. Only getting the degrees of master’s and doctorate does not good education. In schools and universities students should be trained in such a way that they can resurrect their inert powers and can know that the field, in which they are going, is right or wrong for them, and they are right or wrong for the field. They can stick up for them and can remain faithful to their nation, is the best education.
