In 1389, Sir Ralph, a brave and respected soldier, built Lumley Castle. However, he had little time to enjoy his new home, as he and his son Thomas were imprisoned in 1400 for their part in a plot to overthrow Henry IV and replace him with Richard II. Tragically, both were stripped of their titles and executed. Unfortunately, this was not the only disaster to befall the family. Lady Lily Lumley, Sir Ralph’s wife, was murdered by local priests and her body dumped in a well, which still stands today. Her ghost is said to walk the hallowed halls of her former home. Sir Ralph Lumley’s beloved castle, land and wealth were forfeited to the Earl of Somerset, who owned the castle until his death in 1421. With no heirs to inherit the property, Lumley Castle was returned, by Elizabethan law, to its rightful owners or centuries the magnificent spectacle of Lumley Castle has dominated the County Durham landscape. Set within nine acres of enchanted forests and overlooking the River Wear, Lumley Castle Hotel is the perfect fairy tale setting for your wedding day. With its turrets and towers, opulent four poster beds and glittering chandeliers, Lumley Castle is truly a venue fit for a princess. Now part of the No Ordinary Hotels group, this exquisite building is steeped in history: filled with tales that could fill a storybook and memories that will last a life time… Long, long ago, in a not-so-faraway land, lived Sir Ralph Lumley, from whom the hotel takes its name. F 4 Image supplied by www.fyzal.com A Magical Kingdom From the moment you open your eyes in one of our sumptuous bedchambers, as you exchange your vows and as you and your guests watch fireworks light up the sky above Lumley Castle, your wedding will be held in your heart and memory forever. At Lumley Castle, wishes can be granted and dreams can come true, for, here, we believe in happily ever after. – in this case, Sir Ralph’s grandson, Thomas Lumley. Following in the footsteps of his courageous grandfather, Thomas proved to be a valiant, swashbuckling soldier on the battlefield. Playing a prominent role in the War of the Roses and the successful siege of Bamburgh Castle, Thomas was rewarded for his noble efforts and appointed Constable of Scarborough Castle for life in 1461, the same year in which his family’s peerage was restored. After many years of triumphant battles, the gallant and fearless knight met his death in 1485. Succeeded by his son George thus began 400 years of stability, with the Lumley family playing an important role in court and in the day-to-day lives of Chester-le-Street’s people well into the 1800s. However, this is not just a tale of yore, for all those who lived at Lumley Castle left their imprint, modifying and decorating their home to create the unique and very special venue you see today. And, whether you plan to exchange your happy ever afters at Lumley Castle or simply choose to hold your reception with us, our unequalled choice of exquisite rooms will ensure you and your guests have a wonderful day in a storybook setting. Seating from as many as 132 guests to as few as 12, many offer idyllic views over the hotel’s forests and parkland and endless versatility, no matter how lavish or intimate you wish your event to be. Sleeping Beauty Once upon a dream, a princess drifted to sleep in the tower of an ancient castle – and few castles offer beds of such comfort, or rooms of such opulence, as Lumley Castle… W If you wish to be transported back to the bygone era of kings, queens and valiant knights, you can stay within the castle itself, where the intricately carved and heavily draped four poster beds really are fit for royalty. And needless to say, our bridal suite truly is the fairest of them all. With a rich, majestic décor of deep reds and glittering golds and a magnificent, 20 foot high, canopied, four-poster Queen Anne bed, the King James Suite is simply magnificent. Once the castle’s chapel, the spacious suite now boasts its own luxurious lounge area and is a firm favourite among honeymooners and those seeking a truly romantic, relaxing escape. hile none of our guests have ever fallen asleep for 100 years, many of our brides opt to stay at Lumley Castle the night before, or after, their wedding … or both. And, when you see how beautifully furnished, how sumptuous and how extremely welcoming our bedchambers are, you can see why. With beds large enough to accommodate Snow White and all her seven dwarfs and a cloudlike comfort the Princess, who slept on a hidden pea, could only dream of, they provide the perfect start – and end – to your wedding day. 6 And, after the big day is over, you can unwind and take in the charming views of the Lumley landscape while soaking your glass-slipper-worn feet in the room’s very own whirlpool bath. In fact, many of our bedchambers boast charming views across the ancient Lumley estate, which has overlooked the River Wear for six centuries. And, because Lumley Castle really is quite unlike any other hotel, our highly creative designers have ensured every bedroom is as unique and wonderful as the brides who stay in them. If you can’t see the bathroom: look again… maybe it’s hidden behind a beautiful bookcase, tucked into a turret or at the end of a spiralling staircase. No? Perhaps try the wardrobe; one of our en-suites echoes the journey to Narnia and can only be revealed by opening the baroque wooden doors – a true walk-in wardrobe, one might say. Nestled away in the castle’s shadow, you’ll find our elegant courtyard rooms, which were cleverly 7 converted from the castle’s former stables. With décor that complements Lumley Castle’s mix of ancient history and modern luxury – including flat screen TVs and complimentary internet access – and snug beds that leave you feeling more rested than Sleeping Beauty, these rooms are popular among both wedding couples and their guests alike. And, speaking of guests, why not see if your guests want to ‘be our guest’ and extend their stay? The wedding might be over but that doesn’t mean the celebrations have to end once the clock strikes twelve. With 73 bedchambers to choose from, there’s plenty of room for your nearest and dearest to stay, whether inside the castle or in our courtyard rooms – which are just a magic bean’s throw away. Whether you’re inspired by Belle’s ball gown or want to recreate Ariel’s look with the popular mermaid cut, the best place to start is to try on dresses of all shapes and sizes. Even if you’ve dreamt all your life of the dress you’d wear on your wedding day, there’s still plenty of time to change your mind; after all you want to make sure it’s just right. This year the full, bell skirt is back in fashion and what better way to feel like a princess on your big day than with a dress to rival Cinderella’s ball gown? The so-called princess cut is perfect for flattering all shapes and sizes, particularly when paired with a corset top. Choosing a slim bodice and a full skirt is a great way to accentuate your waist line and give you a really feminine look. And, if you’re looking for something a bit more understated, then an a-line dress will give you the same effect as the ball gown, without all that extra material. The mermaid cut has risen in popularity over the last decade and it looks like it’s here to stay. Its elongated bodice is perfect for getting an hour glass shape to show off your figure on your wedding day and the flared skirt, which begins at the knees, will help create a curvy silhouette. Images supplied by www.amoresunderland.co.uk T Maggie Sottero 14 Mark Lesley Continued over... Choosing a dress with intricate embroidery work will make sure your gown really is something special, after all it’s the most memorable outfit you’ll ever wear. 15 Mark Lesley It’s not all about the shape, though. This year white is back with a bang, so forget those dresses in champagne and pale pinks and, if bright white is too harsh, go for winter white or ivory instead. Once you’ve settled on the right shape and colour, it’s time to start thinking about those little added extras. Choosing a dress with intricate embroidery work will make sure your gown really is something special, after all it’s the most memorable outfit you’ll ever wear. This year, it’s all about dresses with embellishment. Lace is particularly popular and is a great way to make sure you look elegant and sophisticated on your big day. From dresses with lace bodices to gowns with full, Venetian lace overlays, there’s something to suit all tastes – meaning you’ll have no trouble finding an outfit that’s just right for you. And, if you’re looking for something that will really dazzle your guests then a high-neck gown with a lot of lace back detail is the perfect way to get that added ‘wow’ factor. Off the shoulder neck lines are a great alternative to strapless gowns and adding this classic feature to your dress will give you that bit of extra support without having to add full sleeves. There’s so much choice when it comes to choosing the right dress, but it’s important not to forget what you’ll be wearing it for. A gown with a billowing train may look fantastic but it doesn’t come without its complications. If you plan on dancing the night away after the ceremony, but you still want the elegance associated with the long sweeping trains then the chapel train, which is shorter than its traditional cathedral counterpart, is much more manageable and can be detached or made into a bustle for the evening reception. And, if you’re heading to a different location to have your wedding photos taken then a shorter train can make the journey a lot easier. Don’t be afraid to try on lots of different gowns – after all you might be surprised and, whether you decide on a designer gown or want to create your own bespoke dress, you can make sure that you look and feel like your favourite princess on your big day. With our collective culinary expertise and cake artistry, we can design your wedding cake to your exact wishes. From fantasy creations and traditional styles to contemporary chocolate sensations, we will design your dream wedding cake. ew features of a wedding are as symbolic as the cake. Not only does it represent fruitfulness and plenty but, in cutting it together – often their first act as man and wife – the bride and groom show they are truly united. For years tradition dictated that this sweet ending to the celebratory feast was a three tiered construction of fruitcakes encased in brittle royal icing; beautiful, but predictable. Now, however, like flowers and gowns before them, cakes are taking their cue from fashion, from contemporary culture and trends and reclaiming their rightful place as the centrepiece of the wedding reception. While fruit cakes will always be popular – not least because they are firm enough to bear the weight of tiers – bridal couples are increasingly opting for F sponges and even cheesecakes and cupcakes as a sweet alternative likely to appeal to all generations. Elaborate, royal icing sugar craft is frequently giving way to soft buttercream, delicately tinted to echo the bridal colour scheme, while the traditional tiers are given a modern twist with contemporary cake stands or ditched entirely in favour of Italianate profiterole pyramids. Such is the fashion for cakes which reflect the characters of the bridal couple and their lives together that anything goes in terms of decoration – from glitter and sparklers to swathes of tulle around the base of the cake and fresh flowers adorning it. However, whatever size and style of cake, whatever it’s made from or looks like, what matters most is that everyone has a slice – that they are all able to share in this most delicious symbol of the special day. Image supplied by www.fyzal.com SINCE 1984 1984 hotography has never been so popular or accessible – camera phones, digital technology and a trend for on-line social networking sites that encourage users to upload and share their images have led to a passion for pictures and a move away from the formal posed shots of years gone by. Some of the loveliest wedding shots are often taken by guests who just happen, often through luck rather than skill, to take a shot which perfectly captures the essence of the day. However, the best way to ensure you receive a comprehensive, professional set of wedding photographs P is to hire a wedding photographer and, if you can choose one by recommendation then so much the better. A trained, experienced wedding photographer will talk through what is wanted – be it formal group shots or an informal, reportagestyle series of un-posed images – and even suggest shots based on their first-hand experience. Ask how well they know the venue as someone who has worked there before will know which rooms make for the best backdrops and which hidden areas of the grounds provide the prettiest settings. Their skill in actually taking the photographs should also be matched by their skill in arranging them. A professional photographer will ensure the gown the flowers and the guests are all displayed to their best advantage and will also ensure that everyone is included. 21 Beautiful Blooms Images supplied by www.alan-gibson.net A wedding without flowers is like a party without music and no-one knows how to strike the right floral note at Lumley quite like florist Christine Thompson… Wedding & Event Florist • Special Occasion Flowers • Flowers For Business Candelabra & Vase Hire • Nationwide Delivery Service • Order Online ...we dream in colour B22 Houghton Business Centre, Lake Road, Houghton Le Spring DH5 8BJ Telephone: (0191) 512 6733 Mobile: 07803 903 777 E-Mail: [email protected] Web: www.funkyflowercompany.co.uk rom bouquets and buttonholes to centrepieces and pedestals, flowers have a major part to play in a wedding. Far more than just a decorative accessory, they lighten dark corners, perfume a room and give the nervous bride something to do with her hands as she makes her way down the aisle. Lumley Castle’s preferred florist, Beautiful Blooms, at Chester-le-Street, has plenty of experience to draw on when it comes to helping brides ‘say it with flowers.’ “We have been involved with wedding flowers for more than 25 years,” said Christine, “and during that time we’ve seen many changes in the type of flowers, colours and designs of bouquets brides have chosen. “In 2013/14, after almost a decade of hand tied bouquets, formal teardrop arrangements made a comeback – perhaps inspired by the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – and I expect to see more of these this year. “There has been a change in the type of flowers, too, with carnations and daisies, which had been thrown over in favour of statement F flowers, like lilies, once again taking their place in bridal bouquets. “Very often brides have a theme for their big day and the Disney film Frozen has certainly been a big influence, particularly on winter weddings. “Pale blue hydrangea, white roses, snowberries and white bouvardia can be used throughout – in bouquets and centrepieces – to create a cool, crisp look for winter. “The vintage, or antique, theme is still immensely popular with brides and offers great creative scope. Centrepieces we have created have included bird cages, china jugs and teacups and glass jars, which can be decorated with hessian, lace and pearls. “Bouquets can echo the theme, with hydrangeas, astilbe, peony roses and freesia providing colour and fragrance. “Here at Lumley Castle, however, the most popular centrepieces are definitely the candelabra, which can be decorated in a variety of ways; with small clusters of gypsophila, or rings of flowers in vibrant or pastel shades. “With so many styles and flowers to choose from – and the unique setting of Lumley Castle to set them all off – every bride can experience petal power on her wedding day.” 23 e offer a bespoke service whereby everything from style of handwriting to types of materials used are customised to suit each couples need. Excitement rang through the kingdom when the palace heralded the news of Prince Charming’s wedding to Cinderella. However, in the absence of town criers or uniformed footmen, we must rely on invitations… e.mail: [email protected] o wedding would be quite complete without guests – yet few wedding preparations are as tricky as compiling the guest list. Had you been tying the knot in days of yore, the task was far simpler. Because so many people could not read or write and, as the printing press had not yet been invented, the town crier would convey the news that a wedding was to take place – and anyone who wanted to would just turn up. Thankfully, you now have a little more say in who attends your wedding – and a multitude of ways in which to invite them. You could, if you really wanted to, drop them an email or send them a text – but sometimes the old ways are still the best and that’s why most bridal couples send out invitations. In the list of life’s pleasures, receiving a wedding invitation must be pretty near the top. Perhaps that is because – now that people so rarely send letters – it is unusual to receive anything other than junk mail and bills through the letterbox. The etiquette of sending wedding invitations began around the beginning of the 18th century when reading and writing was a sign of education, so it was only the elite who could use this form of correspondence. Wedding invitations would be written by hand, often using calligraphy, with all guest names, dates and times being spelt out. You may have come across wedding invitations with a tissue protector, this dates back to the techniques used for invitations printed using letter press, where the tissue would ensure ink would not transfer as it was not always dry. If you’re looking to create wedding invitations that encompass traditional techniques, why not consider adding a wax seal or sticker envelope seal to your invitation envelopes? Not only does this make the sticking of envelopes faster but also replicates the tradition of adding a family crest wax seal to envelopes. When you’re choosing your invitations, consider too, the font – or typeface – you wish to use. You will never go wrong with black italic lettering on a stiff white or ivory card but, whether you opt for a traditional or digital printing service, the choice of styles is endless. However, I must confess that weddings are my favourite, as each one is different. I never lose sight of the fact that every single one is special. What’s been your biggest wedding challenge?: We’ve had everything from ring-bearing owls and dogs, to wedding cars breaking down and brides arriving more than an hour late: that always makes the chef happy! We’ve never had a problem we haven’t been able to solve, though. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened?: The funniest thing that has happened, was me going upstairs to meet the bride and groom, I missed the top step and fell flat on my face in front of them. Do you go above and beyond the call of duty? Going the extra mile is part of the job but I do have to think on my feet quite a lot. A cake once arrived after travelling half way across the country and, sadly, the bottom tier had collapsed, so I bought fresh white roses to hide the damage and turned a three tier cake into two tiers – I’m pleased to say the bride’s mother was delighted with the end result. Name: CLAIRE OAKLAND Job: Events Supervisor What’s your favourite part of your job?: I enjoy all aspects of my job, especially being part of such a happy event. What’s been your biggest wedding challenge?: Every wedding is a challenge and unique, and I embrace each and every challenge as it comes along. I’ve had to cope with wedding dress alterations, cake disasters, and being in two places at once when brides and grooms are arriving at the same time. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened?: I was standing at the front of the castle waiting for a bride and groom to arrive. Their horse and carriage pulled up and just as I gave them their champagne, the horse had a call of nature in front of me and the wedding party. Apparently this is lucky for the couple on their wedding day, but it certainly wasn’t for me. How have you gone above and beyond the call of duty?: I would hope that I go above and beyond the call of duty for everyone’s wedding. Every wedding I have looked after has been different in its own special way. Name: RICHARD Job Title: Head Chef SANDERSON CHILVER What’s your favourite part of your job: Inventing and producing new dishes and keeping up with food trends. What’s been your biggest wedding challenge: Every wedding has its own challenges, but one of the trickiest problems is when the speeches run on too long or photographers spend another hour taking pictures. Our challenge in the kitchen is to ensure that no matter what happens, the food is at its best, always. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened: A bride had a French croquembouche wedding cake – which is profiteroles built into a tower - and the whole thing just collapsed. I was asked to rescue it, which I did and not only did the bride think it looked better than before, but she was so happy that when it came to having her picture taken with it she asked for me to be in the picture with her – and not her new husband! How have you gone above and beyond the call of duty: In lots of ways – I do all the time. I’ve created bespoke traditional African menus, carried out first aid when people have fainted on hot days and fixed hundreds of wedding cakes. I’m happy to, though, because on my wedding day all I wanted was my amazing wife to have a perfect day and all I want at Lumley Castle is for all my brides to have the same. So in my eyes nothing will ever be beyond the call of duty as I will always do everything I can to make their dreams come true. Job title: Wedding Co-ordinator What’s your favourite part of your job?: I love being a part of the couple’s special day and helping to make their ideas and requests reality. The final details meeting is one of my favourite parts as I like finding out about exactly how they envisage their big day. What’s been your biggest wedding challenge?: For me every wedding is as challenging as the next as there is a lot of pressure to ensure that the day is as perfect as the couple imagined. It is important I am organised and that I capture every minor detail. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened?: The most memorable moment was one Thursday morning when I walked into the courtyard to find the best man trying to clamber on to a large white horse. He was attempting to ride down to the bottom of the driveway and collect the bride but had clearly never ridden before. Needless to say, the horse wasn’t impressed. How have you gone above and beyond the call of duty? To ensure the wedding day goes as smoothly as possible, I find myself in a variety of situations, from strapping brides into their dresses to consoling them when things get too stressful. 33 And so, when the couple decided to tie the knot, the castle immediately sprang to mind. They exchanged their vows in front of 65 friends and family members in the spectacular Garter Suite and Joanne, a 32-yearold parent outreach worker from Gateshead, said: “I will never forget walking into the room: it just looked so perfect and magical. I felt I was in a fairy tale – and that feeling stayed with me right through the day.” The couple enjoyed the use of the private courtyard, which they filled with outdoor games for the children and Joanne added: “It was a beautiful, happy day, which all came together with support from the staff at Lumley Castle. “They just couldn’t help enough and we’d both like to thank them for making our day so magical.” Originally from Durham, they both now live in Lincolnshire, where Senior Aircraftsman Carl, 26, is stationed with the RAF and Jill teaches in a primary school. 2015 For 32-year-old lawyer Angela Hardman, from Chester-le-Street, Lumley Castle was almost a home from home. Yet, for their special day, they returned to the North East and to Lumley Castle, for what 26-year-old Jill remembers was “an awesomely beautiful day.” The couple exchanged their vows in the Scarbrough Suite in front of around 70 friends and family members before taking their seats in the Garter Suite for their wedding breakfast – and this was the moment Jill had been waiting for. For not only was it the venue for countless Sunday lunches, Elizabethan banquets and afternoon teas throughout her childhood, but her mum, Elaine Green, used to work in the hotel’s bar. “When I was a child I thought it was the most magical place,” said Angela, “and that magic was certainly there on our wedding day.” “I had such strong ideas about how I wanted the room to be dressed,” she said, “but because I was unable to be there in advance to do it myself I had to hand it over to the hotel’s wedding team – and they did an absolutely amazing job. Angela and Jonathan, a 35-year-old estate agent, who met on a blind date – “we were set up by friends” – married at nearby St Cuthbert’s Church before heading to Lumley Castle for a formal wedding breakfast for 88. “We did much of the wedding ourselves, from the single sunflower table centrepieces to the wedding favours and the paper aeroplanes we used instead of confetti, so it was all very personal – it was a truly magical day.” “The room was decorated so beautifully,” said Angela, “and we had the most amazing day, surrounded by all our loved ones in a place which holds so many lovely memories for us all.” 3rd April 2015 For not only is Joshua, who hails from Philadelphia in the USA, fascinated by English history, but his stateside friends and family jumped at the chance to stay in an authentic castle. Around 52 guests joined 29-year-old hernia care specialist Rebecca and Joshua, 40, a company director, for their wedding ceremony in the hotel’s stunning Scarbrough Suite, before dancing the night away to a live band in the Baron’s Hall. “Our American guests in particular, thought it was just amazing,” said Rebecca. “They all stayed at Lumley the nights before and after the wedding and just couldn’t believe they were staying in a genuine castle. “The wedding really was wonderful and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Everything went so smoothly – it really was brilliant from start to finish.” 34 When Cheryl and Samantha tied the knot at Lumley Castle it really was an allsinging, all-dancing affair. For not only did the happy couple exchange their vows to the accompaniment of a singer in the hotel’s Garter Suite, but later, when it was time to take to the dancefloor in the Barons Hall, they and their bridesmaids teamed up for a ‘flash mob’-style dance routine to Uptown Funk, by Bruno Mars. Cheryl, a 36-year-old nurse and Samantha, 25, who owns a catering company, shared their happy day with 70 daytime and 200 evening guests and “we wouldn’t have changed a thing,” said Cheryl. “The whole day was perfect from start to finish and I can’t speak highly enough of Keith, our wedding coordinator,” she added. “We were running slightly late for the ceremony yet he took it all his stride and the whole day ran so smoothly – he really was marvellous. “Our day was everything we wished it would be and more. I just wish we could do it all again.” LYNSEY AND STEPHEN WOLFE 2015 Image © www.adamskii.com 20th September CHERYL AND SAMANTHA SENIOR Image © www.bennettmedia.co.uk 7th ber vem No REBECCA AND JOSHUA RIFFE Lumley Castle is steeped in history, which made it the perfect choice for bride-to-be Rebecca Price, from Ryton and fiancé Joshua Riffe. 2015 For Lynsey Birrell and Stephen Wolfe, Good Friday wasn’t just good, it was amazing – because they exchanged their wedding vows at the place that meant so much to them both. Four years earlier, almost to the day, 28-year-old shop assistant Lynsey and Stephen, 29, a marine engineer from Aberdeen, got engaged at Lumley Castle – so it was the obvious and ideal choice when it came to their wedding day. “We’d been staying overnight at Lumley and we had just returned to our room when Stephen proposed to me,” said Lynsey. “It was one of the happiest days of my life and, as we started to plan our wedding, we knew it had to be at Lumley Castle.” Around 85 guests gathered in the hotel’s Scarbrough Suite for the ceremony, which was followed by a formal wedding breakfast and an evening reception in the Garter Suite. “We had a photo booth – which was really good fun – and a candy Ferris wheel and then we rounded off the night with a firework display,” said Lynsey. “And, because it was Easter, instead of traditional wedding favours, each of our guests received a Lindt chocolate bunny. “It really was a lovely wedding.” 35 Image © Karen McGowran When Joanne and Leon took their three children to play in the park, they would look up at Lumley Castle and tell them tales of knights and princesses.
