Cancer patients and their families and caregivers find themselves surrounded by hope, warmth, and support at Tunnell Cancer Center. They
not only find the superb care and medical expertise they need from the
physicians and staff, but also experience the profound gift of friendship and
kindness from people in the community who are there to share their battle
with them. Some people donate their time and their unique skills. Others
bear gifts or give donations. All bring their love and kindness with them,
hoping that they are making a difference in the lives of those they touch.
More than eight years ago, for example, the Faith, Hope, Love Quilters
began donating quilts to the cancer center for patients undergoing
chemotherapy.
“They sit there a long time and they get cold,” says organizer Shirley
Loveland.
The organization is made up of between 25 and 30 women “who love to
quilt and want to help others.” For convenience, the women meet twice a
month at the St. Matthew By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, in Fenwick.
While they have been knitting a variety of items for several different charities
since 1997, they have always supported Tunnell Cancer Center patients. In
late October, they presented the center with the 6,000th quilt. The number
of people who support Faith, Hope, Love Quilters has grown, and the group
always is appreciative of donated fabrics.
Former Tunnell Cancer Center patients, as well as other friends and supporters, regularly bring homemade baked goods to the center for patients
and staff to enjoy. And with cookies always being a popular item, Carolyn
DellaCamera, a local cookie manager for The Girls Scouts of the Chesapeake
Cover: The Faith, Hope, Love Quilters, of St. Matthew’s By-the-Sea United Methodist Church, in Fenwick, meet weekly to
sew colorful and comforting quilts for Tunnell Cancer Center patients. They have made and donated more than 6,000 quilts.
Bay Council, thought that Girl Scout cookies might be welcomed, too.
“My sister had battled esophagus cancer and the place was like a family.
I can’t say enough about how good Tunnell Cancer Center was.”
Mrs. DellaCamera knew that every year there were excess cookies that were
sent to the troops overseas, so she hoped some of them could go to the cancer
center. She got permission from the council to take 40 cases to the cancer center,
where she was joined by a group of Brownies, and one younger brother, who
wanted to show their support for the patients.
“There is always an emphasis on community service in scouting,” says Mrs.
DellaCamera. “So the girls were excited to take part.”
Another supporter is Bobbi Berry, owner of Today’s Hair, in Rehoboth
Beach. For the last five years, Ms. Berry has taken used wigs that her clients
have donated, washed and restyled them, and given them to Tunnell Cancer
Center, where, in turn, they are free to patients who have lost their hair because
of chemotherapy. She also washes and restyles wigs that patients have donated
back to the center after their hair has grown back. Ms. Berry then cuts the wigs
at no cost for Tunnell Cancer Center patients.
“It’s my way of giving back to the community,” she says.
Sara Aldrich, of Lewes, volunteers at Tunnell Cancer Center to play the piano
in the lobby area for the enjoyment of patients, their families, and an untold
number of others who share their hearts. Frances Kershaw has been a regular
supporter, bringing hats and scarves and other items she has sewn. Members of
the Nifty Knitters also hold cancer patients close to their hearts as they make lap
blankets, scarves, and hats. Others in the community bring books and puzzles
for patients’ entertainment.
“There are so many people who are there for our patients,” says Cherrie Rich,
Director of Oncology Services. “And our cancer survivors return to support our
new patients and to thank our staff. It is very heartwarming.”
William Rigler regularly works in the Healing Garden, located outside the
windows of the chemotherapy area. He is
a part-time employee of Baywood Greens
golf course, which is owned by the
Tunnell Companies. Although Mr. Rigler’s
time is donated by his employer, his work
is filled with love and empathy.
“I am a cancer survivor,” he says. “Not
from here but from Pennsylvania. But I
know what they are going through. And
I hope that when they look out in the
garden as they sit there all those hours,
they can enjoy its beauty and relax.” n
Baywood Greens donates gardener William Rigler’s
time three days a week to tend the Healing Garden at
the Tunnell Cancer Center.

for her demanding course work as a student at Beebe School of Nursing. She’s
determined to be successful.
“The program is a full-time job plus,” the 20-year-old admits. “There’s definitely a lot to know.”
Shauna recalls how she had to be prepared to answer any question her
teacher might have asked her when her class did one of the “head-to-toe” assessments of a patient. Students have to know the patient’s history, as well as presenting symptoms and vital signs. They have to do independent research on an
existing illness the patient may have—such as diabetes or heart disease—and the
interactions and side effects of any medications that would be prescribed for the
particular illness.
“There are tests every week, and they get progressively more difficult,” Shauna
says. Shauna and the other students learn about real-life situations, what their
responsibility would be as a nurse, and how much medical and nursing knowledge they would have to have in a real-life situation.
“We want to make sure that the students have a high level of confidence and
that they are prepared to give safe patient care after they have graduated,” says
Constance E. Bushey, RN, BSN, MEd, Director of
the Beebe School of Nursing. She explains that the
faculty makes sure each student has a well-rounded
educational experience. An important aspect of what
students are taught is that patient assessments are
an excellent way to learn about different types of
patients and a wide array of illnesses.
Shauna is among a select group of about 30 students who are accepted each fall into Beebe School
of Nursing. The program, taught by registered nurses
with advanced degrees, offers education and theory
in the classroom, as well as hands-on experience in
Beebe Medical Center under direct faculty supervision. In order to enter the program, incoming students must have the equivalent of one year of college and a nursing assistant certification. About 70
to 80 percent of Beebe School of Nursing students
complete the two-year, “hospital-based diploma”
program. Of those, more than 90 percent earn their
Registered Nursing certification on the first try. Many
go on to earn their bachelor’s degree in nursing in
one additional year through an articulation agreement with Wilmington University. Many start their
careers at Beebe Medical Center or another hospital,
or they continue their education in a variety of fields
open to registered nurses.
Because of the shortage of nurses in Delaware
and across the nation, Beebe Medical Center plans
to increase the size of the school to assure that a
steady stream of educated and qualified nurses are
prepared and ready to meet the growing demand for
their skills.
“The need is definitely there,” Mrs. Bushey says.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
has predicted a shortage of one million nurses by
2010. Delaware has reported that there was an
11 percent shortage of nurses in 2000 and that the
shortage could grow to more than 50 percent within
the next 12 years.
“I never realized how much you can do as a
nurse,” says Shauna, who already has begun to
focus on a geriatric field because she would like
to be working with older people. She has worked
in a nursing home as an activities assistant and has
enjoyed bringing laughter and happiness to those
around her. “I grew up in a family of nurses. My mother
graduated from Beebe,” Shauna says. “I’ve heard
about nursing my whole life.”
Sarah Lenderman, 22, moved to Milton from
Hockessin, near Wilmington, to study at Beebe
School of Nursing. She has worked for three and a
half years as a patient care technician at the Newark

Emergency Center, and she still picks up shifts there for extra money.
“I have a critical care personality,” she says. “I have the ability to stay calm in
situations. When I graduate, I would like to work in the Emergency Department
at Christiana Hospital, in Newark.”
Sarah says she applied to Beebe School of Nursing because it is the only
diploma school in Delaware.
“My mother is a nurse, and she also went to a diploma school. She wanted
me to receive the same quality ‘hands-on’ experience that she did,” Sarah says,
explaining that her mother said it would give her the skills and understanding
she would need when she began her nursing career.
Sarah, an animal lover and dog owner, has, in her spare time, enjoyed helping
critically ill puppies as a volunteer for the Delaware Puppy Rescue.
Millville resident Stewart Pryor, 23, still works as a firefighter with Lewes Fire
Department while he is attending Beebe School of Nursing. He also serves as an
emergency medical technician (EMT) with the department. He says he likes the
challenges of critical care.
“I like the complexity, of not having two days the same,” he says of his work
with the fire department. “Someone will have a massive MI [heart attack] and
you’ll have to act quickly. You have to cut people out of a vehicle they may have
been pinned in. At the end of the day, you feel as if you did something to help
someone in their time of need.”
As an EMT, Stewart assists paramedics in such medical actions as giving the
patient oxygen, or giving an injection that administers epinephrine—an emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions. As a nurse, he would work closely
with patients, learn more details about their medical conditions, and make a
difference in their recovery.
“I like to help people,” he says, “and I’m really interested in critical care
medicine.”
Mrs. Bushey says
that about two-thirds of
the students bring life
experiences with them.
“I’d say only about onethird of our students
only have their high
school experience and
a year of college.”
Another experienced
student is Long Neck resident Andrew Tull, 25. He

for three years before moving to Delaware, and he
has been a phlebotomist with Beebe Medical Center
for six years. He was one of the first to work at the
Beebe Health Campus when it opened in 2004.
“I always wanted to be a nurse,” he says. “I’m
interested in working in the operating room.”
As a phlebotomist, Andrew gets to interact with
patients when he takes their blood. He says he
enjoys getting to know them, often seeing the same
people again and again when they return for additional tests.
“I’ve always liked helping people,” he says,
adding that he enjoys studying at Beebe School of
Nursing. The faculty is supportive, and the library is
open 24 hours a day, which allows students to have
access to excellent data bases at all times. “The program is really geared to make you learn.”
Mrs. Bushey says that the program also exposes
students to healthcare in outpatient facilities and in
physician offices. Students, for example, will spend
a day or two with an orthopaedic surgeon, a neurologist, or an OB/GYN.
“They want us to be the best that we can be,”
says Shauna, who notes the camaraderie that exists
at school between the students and the faculty. “They
are more than willing to help. Nursing is definitely
teamwork.”
Shauna also stresses that the pharmacists at
Beebe Medical Center point the students in the right
direction when they need to find information within
the complex world of medications. The teamwork
does not end once the nurses graduate. Those who
start their career at Beebe Medical Center become
part of a “preceptorship” program in which each
new nurse works under the wing of a seasoned
nurse for about four months, all the while getting
to know the other members of the team.
The goal of the program, says Mrs. Bushey,
is high-quality, safe patient care—and thorough
preparation for whatever the future may hold. n

Birthday
For Eric and Bethany Gay, moving to Millsboro from
North Carolina brought many changes to their lives.
One change was their experience with “babyhood.”
Their first child, Hailey, was born six years ago in
North Carolina. After the family moved to Delaware,
the second baby, Luke, now two, was born at Beebe
Medical Center.
“It was such a nice experience that we wanted
to come back with this baby,” Mrs. Gay said when
visiting the Women’s Health Pavilion in October,
just two weeks after their daughter Payton was born.
“Everyone was so helpful and explained everything.
And the day after the delivery the charge nurse came
to see how everything was.”
Mr. Gay recalled how comfortable he felt as a
father in a maternity ward—not normally a comfortable place for a man like her husband, Mrs. Gay
pointed out.
“All the nurses had such a sense of humor that
it made it pleasant to be here,” he said.
It’s satisfied parents like the Gays, who return
to Beebe Medical Center to deliver their babies, that
have helped Beebe break its record in the baby numbers. In fiscal year 2008, with 1,005 births, Beebe
Medical Center topped 1,000 births in a single year
for the first time. And for the first two months of
fiscal year 2009 there were 192 babies born, an
8 percent increase over the same period in recordbreaking 2008.
“We’re busting at the seams,” says Beverly Turney,
RNC-OB, interim Nurse Manager of the Women’s
Health Pavilion. “We used to average 80 births a
month. Now we’re going over the 100 mark.”
Ms. Turney says the numbers reflect the fact that
more young families in the area are having multiple
children, and that there is an increase in the number
of professional couples who have moved to coastal
Delaware from larger metropolitan areas.
“We used to average 80 births a month. Now we’re going over the 100 mark.”
Beverly Turney, RNC-OB, interim Nurse Manager of the Women’s Health Pavilion
The Women’s Health Pavilion also cares for
women who have undergone surgery and treatment
for illnesses and diseases of the female reproductive
system. Although Beebe Medical Center plans to
expand the Women’s Health Pavilion, there have
been days when the expansion could not come soon
enough. But while the unit does get “very busy at
times,” Ms. Turney emphasizes that the dedication,
commitment, and camaraderie of the staff is never
in doubt.
“We are a close-knit group,” she says. “And I
believe we have some of the best nurses in the
hospital.”
The Gays certainly think so. Mrs. Gay nominated
four of the registered nurses who took care of
her—Patti Hall, RN; Cathy Barber, RN; Valerie
Gilbert, RN; and Nicole Hall, RN—with “Catch Me
Beaming” awards, Beebe Medical Center’s version
of a customer service award that is customer nominated. Mrs. Gay also said that she enjoyed having a
midwife deliver her baby. “Sally Ruby delivered Luke,
and I asked that she deliver my third baby, too.”
Midwives play an important role, says Steven D.
Berlin, MD, Chief of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Beebe
Medical Center. Dr. Berlin is a member of Bayside
Health Association, Chtd., where there are three midwives and four obstetricians/gynecologists. Midwives
see patients in the practice, spend time with the
mothers when they are in labor, and deliver babies.
However, there is always a physician ready to back
up the midwife, if necessary.
“Many women prefer to have a midwife deliver
their baby,” he says, adding that babies are delivered
by obstetricians/gynecologists from Bayside Health
Association and from DELMED Health, also in Lewes.
Beebe Medical Center also has an active lactation
program staffed by two International Board Certified
Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). Nancy Hastings, RN,
IBCLC, who has worked as a nurse for more than
27 years in the Women’s Health Pavilion, is the fulltime lactation consultant. Meta Sharp-Franz, RNC,
IBCLC, with more than 24 years in the Women’s
Health Pavilion, also splits her role as a nurse in the
unit and as a lactation consultant. These two nurses
support new mothers in their efforts to breastfeed
their babies, as well as in their efforts to take care
of their daily needs. n

they had two of their three children
at Beebe Medical Center. They are

Beebe Honor Roll of Donors
(7/1/2007 – 6/30/2008)
Beebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the sole
mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Medical Center.
Through the efforts of the Foundation, more than $26 million has been
raised to support new construction and renovation of medical facilities,
new and ongoing medical programs, and to establish an endowment fund
to ensure Beebe will always be available for this community.
As an independent not-for-profit organization, Beebe Medical Center relies
on the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, and foundations that
are listed in this Honor Roll of Donors.

School of Nursing Campaign
The proceeds from the School of Nursing Campaign will benefit Beebe Medical
Center’s School of Nursing construction project.
There is a critical nurse shortage in Delaware and across the country. Nurses provide frontline care and comfort at difficult times in patients’ lives.
The School is planning to double the capacity of the current nursing class, enabling it to graduate more nurses. The new facility will also provide the latest technologies in nursing education.

Annual Holiday of Lights Tree Lighting
November 29, 2007
Marking the beginning of the holiday season, this annual event is an opportunity
to remember or honor family members and friends. Lights are placed on a tree
on the lawn of the medical center as a sign of this remembrance at the beginning
of the holiday season. The 2007 Holiday of Lights proceeds benefit Beebe Medical
Center’s Community Health Program that ensures:
• Our mission to make sure everyone has access to basic diagnostic medical care.
• Community Health conducts multiple screening programs and health fairs each
year and structures these programs so that anyone can take advantage of these
important medical tests, regardless of ability to pay.
• Beebe Medical Center is committed to provide the best possible care at the lowest possible cost.

Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament
October 2, 2007
The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan
Martin, two outstanding women who lost their valiant battle with cancer. During their final months, both women were surrounded by families that loved
and cared for them and a circle of friends who generously gave their time and
support.
It is most important that people going through these trying times receive all the
physical and spiritual support available. The goal of the Jean & Joan Fund is to assist the Tunnell Cancer Center in providing care and comfort for patients. The fund has supported the establishment of the Jean & Joan Education Room at
the Tunnell Cancer Center, purchased a van for the transport of patients to and
from their treatments, and in 2007 funded the building of the enclosure for the
Tunnell Cancer Center Healing Garden.
The 2007 Golf Tournament raised $28,000, bringing the total Jean & Joan Fund contributions since its inception to $220,000.

Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament
July 17, 2008
Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club’s Progress for Prostate Charity Golf
Tournament was established by a group of individuals who wanted to focus
attention on prostate cancer. Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most
common type of cancer found in American men. Early detection is the key to
combating this disease.
The 2008 tournament raised over $22,000, bringing the total contribution of
Progress for Prostate Charity Golf Tournament to nearly $110,000 to help Beebe
Medical Center provide free prostate screenings and community awareness programs. Committee Members

classic at baywood charity golf tournament
June 4, 2008
The Classic at Baywood Greens Charity Golf Tournament was established by a
committee of individuals who partnered with local sponsors to benefit the Tunnell
Cancer Center. The Classic’s contribution helps fund and expand the center’s comprehensive cancer care service. From diagnosis through treatment and beyond,
patients at the Tunnell Cancer Center are never alone. The 2008 Golf Tournament raised $35,000 to assist Beebe Medical Center in providing both hope and wellness to cancer patients and their families. The committee greatly appreciates the local sponsor support.
