Drought Relief At The BO?
T
he abnormally severe summer has not yet been alleviated by delayed monsoon
showers and the meteorological department has issued the worrying forecast
that we are in for deficient rainfall this year, leading to a drought. At the Hindi film
box office, however, it seems that the tide maybe turning, and after an extended period
of disappointment and disasters, the trade finally has something to cheer about.
In the week that went by, Tanu Weds Manu Returns stormed into the ` 100-crore
club, the first Hindi film to do so this year. And it has done so in style – sailing past the
coveted milestone well before its second week was through, and still going strong.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ success follows the stellar performance of Piku which
wowed the critics and trade alike when it released barely a month ago. While
both films boasted storied pedigrees, featured more-than-decent star casts and
were generally expected to do well, it is the scale of both films’ success that has
pleasantly surprised the trade.
Despite the presence of such stalwarts as Mr Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and
Irrfan, a film that doesn’t really have a plot and revolves around the relationship between
a constipated senior citizen and his daughter and the road trip they undertake with the
owner of a private taxi company isn’t prima facie the kind of project that has ‘super hit’
written all over it. Yet Piku soared above the seemingly meager storyline and forged a
very strong and personal connect with the many who watched it. And for this, rich credit
is deserved by all concerned, especially the actors, the writer and the director.
While it may seem that as the follow-up to a successful prequel, Tanu Weds Manu
Returns had an easier ride, the reality is that Tanu Weds Manu was a surprise hit,
perhaps aided by the fact that it released to little or no expectations. TWMR didn’t have
that luxury and even if it had collected say, a healthy ` 60 crore, it would have still
been deemed a disappointment despite achieving a more than 50 per cent increment
on the first part’s collections. Moreover, as we all know, the history of cinema – both in
India and worldwide – is replete with sequels that may have managed to cash in on the
popularity of the franchise but failed to live up to the artistic standards of the original
part. It is therefore a remarkable achievement indeed that TWMR is set to not only triple
the business of its predecessor, but is also widely acknowledged as an even better
film than the previous installment. Kudos, therefore, are in order to all those involved in
creating what is the highest grossing film of the year so far, and special mention must be
made of the leading lady, Kangana Ranaut’s performance (or rather, performances) in
bringing to life perhaps Hindi cinema’s most credible double role.
While Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Piku are very different films – both in tone
and in sensibility – what is common to both is that each has a very strong female
character at the heart of the narrative. And both films chose to take a detour from
the oft-beaten path to dish out content that seems fresh without being abstract.
Finally, both are backed by strong writing. Undoubtedly, there are very important
lessons to be learnt from both of these successes that have proven that it wasn’t as
if the box office had dried up in recent months; it was our failure to feed it with the
right content that led to its stinginess.
With both Piku and Tanu Weds Manu Returns striking gold in quick succession –
with just a fortnight’s gap between the two – we finally have something that we didn’t
for a very long time: momentum.
The good news is that there are quite a few films waiting in the wings to take that
impetus forward, starting with the just-released multi-starrer, Dil Dhadakne Do, that has
opened decently. Coming up are Hamari Adhuri Kahani and ABCD 2 (3D), respectively,
on the upcoming two Fridays. We then move on to the closest we can to a ‘sure-shot hit’
in this risky business – Salman Khan on Eid – with Bajrangi Bhaijan. And with the Ajay
Devgn starrer, Drishyam, releasing on the last day of the quarter, Q2 2015 will hopefully
present a much healthier balance sheet for the trade than Q1 did.
And if we do end the quarter on a much happier note than we entered it, it will only
go to prove the old adage about there being a woman behind every success… in this
case there were three – Piku Banerjee, Tanuja Trivedi and Kusum Sangwan!

D
il Dhadakne Do is the perfect
example of a film that proves
that subtlety is the best way to
convey a story. Right from the first frame
till the end credits roll, this film keeps the
audience entertained. The pace does dip
in places, especially in the first half, but
the overall result is superb. From the way
the film has been constructed, visualised,
presented and blended with sterling
performances by one and all, this film is
a treat for cinema lovers.
The Mehras are a leading business
family whose patriarch Kamal Mehra (Anil
Kapoor) is the quintessential, self-made
business magnate married to Neelam
(Shefali Shah), who silently endures her
husband’s pompous behaviour. Their
daughter Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra) runs
a successful business but is unhappily
married to Manav (Rahul Bose). The son
Kabir (Ranveer Singh) will inherit the
family business and is forced to follow
the path his father has chosen for him.
Then there is their pet Pluto (voiceover by
Aamir Khan).
To celebrate their 30th wedding
anniversary, the Mehras invite their
friends for a luxurious Mediterranean
cruise. Kamal, although a millionaire, is
facing bankruptcy with his company and
along with Neelam decides to get their
son Kabir married to Nuri (Ridhima Sud),
their arch rival’s only daughter.
On the cruise, Kabir falls in love
with a free-spirited Farah Ali (Anushka
Sharma), who is attracted to him too. And
Ayesha meets her long-lost boyfriend
Sunny (Farhan Akhtar). Thus, the cruise
turns out to be an eye-opener for many
relationships as emotions come out in
the open for this classy Punjabi family.
How the film unfolds forms the crux of
the story.
The dysfunctional family’s superficial
emotions when peeled to the bone has
the essence of love. That’s what this
film is all about. Subliminal emotions are
portrayed expertly and the realisation of
what each character wants out of life is
conveyed beautifully.
Just like Zoya Akhtar’s previous
film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara had
picturesque locations as another hero,
Dil Dhadakne Do has another protagonist
– the cruise ship and amazing locations.
Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s idea of
making a film based on a dysfunctional
family is both novel and interesting.
And as a director, Akhtar has handled
some of the scenes brilliantly. She has
done her homework with the script and
character sketches. The flow of the
storyline is precise and the pace of the
story is good. Also, as the writer of the
film, she knows how to handle delicate
scenes beautifully.
For instance, the brother-sister
bond between Singh and Chopra is
perfectly showcased and there are no
unnecessary interactions. Instead, subtle
glances and a few poignant lines bring
out the unspoken differences between
the couple, Kapoor and Shah. Each
relationship is elusive, making their
interaction very natural. Many scenes
have been handled with confidence by
the director, like the one where the Mehra
family argues with each other at the
cruise’s medical centre and the scene
where Kamal reacts to Manav’s behavior.
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has come up
with average tunes but the songs go
well with the narrative. The background
score adds to the story’s flow. Aamir
Khan’s voiceover is another highlight
of the film. Cinematography by Carlos
Catalan is spectacular. He captures the
scenic locations and the cruise journey
beautifully. Dialogue is simple but
injects realism into the film. Locations
and costumes are breathtaking. Editing
by Anand Subaya and Manan Mehta
is precise even though the flow of the
screenplay dips in places. With a runtime
of 170 minutes, the film could have been
15 minutes shorter.
Performance-wise, Anil Kapoor plays
his part with sheer conviction. Kapoor
fills his role with an air of arrogance
mixed with ignorance. Shefali Shah
is the soul of the film and delivers a
bravura performance. Priyanka Chopra
subtly portrays her part and delivers an
endearing performance. Ranveer Singh
delivers his career-best performance. He
is lovable in this role.
Although Anushka Sharma doesn’t
have much screen time, she does deliver
an impressive act. Farhan Akhtar has
only a few scenes but he manages to
leave a mark. Rahul Bose is fabulous.
Ridhima Sud is good. Vikrant Massey
impresses. Zarina Wahab is superb.
Parmeet Sethi, Vandana Sajnani Khattar
and Manoj Pahwa play their respective
parts well. The rest of the supporting cast
is excellent.
Verdict: A must-watch and a sure-shot
winner at the ticket counter!

TRADE GUP
Eros Acquires WB and
HP 3
T
he buzz in the trade is that Eros International, which is having
a great run at the box office this year, has acquired two more
films – Feroz Nadiadwala’s Base Industries Group’s Welcome Back
and Hera Pheri 3. Both films are sequels to super hit franchises.
Accordingly, the deal is worth ` 130 crore.
Welcome Back, directed by Anees Bazmee and featuring a
multi-star cast, will now probably release in September. Hera Pheri
3, directed by Neeraj Vora and featuring John Abraham, Abhishek
Bachchan, Esha Gupta and Neha Sharma, will probably release
early next year.
Eros Acquires
A
anand L Rai set up his production house
Colour Yellow Pictures in 2008 because
getting producers on board was difficult for
him at that time. But over the years, after Tanu
Weds Manu became a hit, offers were pouring
in for him. At the time, Eros International came
on board for his Raanjhanaa, which became
a super hit. Now Tanu Weds Manu Returns is
their most recent release. We now hear that
Eros International has acquired Colour Yellow
Pictures. Krishika Lulla confirms, “We have
stakes in the company and from now, we will
be co-producing films.”
Will He Won’t He?
T
Ahmed To
Direct Jr Shroff?
C
horeographers-turned-director usually
turn out to be massy directors in our
Hindi film industry. And if they get to direct
a dance film, it’s the cherry on the cake.
Ahmed Khan, who recently directed Tiger
Shroff in a music album by T-Series, has
narrated a script to the actor. The script
is based on dance and we hear the actor
has given it the nod. But a source close
to the film reveals, “Tiger will be working
under Sajid Nadiadwala Productions and
Ahmed is in talks with Sajid Nadiadwala to
co-produce the film. The film is based on
dance but will go on the floors only next
year as Tiger has his plate full right now.”
here was talk that Bhushan Kumar and Ahmed Khan would team up once again
after jointly making Ek Paheli Leela, to produce Abhishek Dogra’s (Dolly Ki Doli
fame) next which features Huma Qureshi and Ali Zafar in the lead. The yet untitled
film is based on a road trip but we hear that Bhushan Kumar is not very happy with
the script and have asked the director to draft a fresh
version. Yes, creative differences seem to have cropped
up between T-Series and Ahmed Khan’s production
house.
A source close to the director reveals, “Though the
film has the potential to have some good songs as it’s a
film based on a road trip but the first draft didn’t have
sufficient sequences to use songs in the film. So the
director is reworking the draft.” Bhushan Kumar from
T-Series was unavailable for comment.
Guess
Who?
S
ome films work, others don’t. And when a film becomes a hit, everyone is eager to take credit;
but when it doesn’t work, it’s always the director who takes the fall. This recently released film
was drafted with huge expectations and when the producer stepped in, he promised the moon.
But creative differences loomed and the film underwent many changes before it went on the floors.
And that includes the star cast and dialogue. And get this – the director was not allowed to oversee
the entire post-production process. Now that the film has bombed badly, the producer is blaming
the director for poor content and poor direction!

Watch Out For Main Aur Charles
W
hen your trailer manages to impress the audience, it’s half the battle and won, and
the trailer of Prawaal Raman’s Main Aur Charles starring Randeep Hooda, Richa
Chaddha and Adil Hussain is one of them.
Watch the first scene of the trailer and you’re convinced that this film will be a thorough
entertainer. Moreover, every frame has been shot and executed stylishly and brilliantly. And
double-whammy is Hooda’s various looks in the film, and the way he delivers his lines. And,
of course, the way he interacts with the women in the film has been shown in the trailer is
one of film’s USPs.
We have watched the trailer and confidently predict that the people involved with this film
have a winner on their hands.
Sridevi’s Next Postponed
S
ridevi, who made her comeback with English Vinglish in 2012, is taking her own
sweet time to choose projects. She doesn’t want to take up just about any script she
is offered. Last year, she said yes to Kona Venkat, a South writer for a Tamil-Telugu film
currently titled Puli, which also features South superstar Vijay. The film is being shot in
Tamil and Telugu but will release in Hindi too.
But a source close to the film reveals, “It’s a sci-fi film and 80 per cent of it has been
shot. The actress was to finish shooting by the first half of this year but the rest of the
schedule has been postponed to July. The film will now release early next year.”
An Unusual Love Story
H
awaizaada might not have
worked at the box office but
Vibhu Puri, a veteran of this industry,
is ready with his second story. The
director has drafted a beautiful love
story between two physically challenged
people. This story offers a sensitive
and unique perspective of romantic
love. We also hear that the director has
approached Dhanush and Vidya Balan
to play the lead. Watch this space for
more!
Sohum Shah
To Direct Jr
Bachchan
B
unty Walia has signed Sohum Shah
to direct a film which will feature
his close friend Abhishek Bachchan in
the lead. We hear that Walia was looking
for scripts to produce and was talking to
many directors. But it was Shah’s script
that Walia liked most. We hear that it
was during the first narration itself that
Walia suggested close friend Abhishek
Bachchan’s name for the lead and a
meeting was fixed.
Bachchan, who is currently shooting for
Hera Pheri 3 in Mumbai, took time out for
a narration and then agreed to be a part
of the film. It’s a solo hero project and has
a love angle. In all probability, the film will
start rolling early next year.
We tried getting in touch with Sohum
Shah and Bunty Walia but both were silent
on the developments regarding the film.
Guess Who?
T
his director is known for his creative vision and many producers would endorse
his work. Initially, he started with small-budget films with solo producers and
those films did well. Soon he was signed by a big production house, and there was
a lot of buzz around his off-beat film which bombed at the box office.
Next, he signed a two-film deal with another BIG production house, where the
latter will release one of his films as producer. The big production house went all out
with the film this director directed but the film failed to attract attention. Now hear
that the director is blaming the marketing division as it was not promoted the way it
should have been. The director has also decided to hire his own team to market his
next film, which the production house has to release anyway.

The Rainmakers
With their eyes firmly on quality content, these two worthies – producer
Krishika Lulla of Eros International and Sneha Rajani, Deputy President and
Head, MSM Motion Pictures – are racing ahead. And with good reason, for
their respective films, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Piku, brought a smile to
the faces of everyone, from cine-goers, to the trade and the industry at large.
Here are the two winners in conversation with team Box Office India
Krishika Lulla (KL): How did your
association with Piku begin?
Sneha Rajan (SR): NP (Singh)
and I were discussing Kaun Banega
Crorepati and, at the time, he narrated
a one-liner of Piku to me and
said Amitabh Bachchan was working
on it. Two months later, I moved to
the motion picture division of the
company. NP asked me what I
would like to work on first and I said,
‘Piku’. He asked me to go ahead
with the project and I heard the full
narration from Soojit (Sircar) and Juhi
(Chaturvedi). They also sent me the
script, which was outstanding. We
announced the film just two weeks
after I moved to the filmmaking side of
the company.
12
SR: And your association with Tanu Weds
Manu Returns?
KL: When I met Aanandji (L Rai), I wanted
to make Tanu Weds Manu Returns as he
had the seed of the film. I had just heard
a one-liner of the film and I was eager to
do the film. At that time, Raanjhanaa was
also developing and it too had a beautiful
script. I wanted to do both films and I was
waiting for Raanjhanaa to be completed so
that we could start working on Tanu Weds
Manu Returns.
SR: And what a stupendous film!
KL: I knew it would be bigger than the first
one.
SR: You knew it?
KL: Yes, because the concept was so
strong. I can never forget the one liner
that I heard in the initial stages. I fell in
love with it and loved it so much that I
wanted to do it first. But I am glad we did
Raanjhanaa first.
SR: And the casting?
KL: The film is a continuation of the first
part, so the casting had to be the same.
SR: Was it easy to get everyone back
together?
KL: It was actually beautiful to not only get
the cast but all the technicians together
for the sequel. There were just a few new
people like Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub.
Each character came back like the actress
who plays Pappi’s love interest. She got
back and had a better role too. Each actor
Box Office India

performed brilliantly, from the father to the
mother to even the uncles and aunts.
It is hard for me to pick my favourite
scene as each one is so well scripted and
executed. Even the scene where Manu’s
mother is blabbering in the background
even as Manu, Pappi and the father are
talking. Everything is so real. I found it
brilliant and even the audience found it
brilliant.
SR: Yes, clearly.
KL: Earlier I would have said this is our film
but it’s wiser to say that is the audience’s
film.
Box Office India (BOI): Both films were
expected to do well but the scale of
success surprised even the trade. Were
both of you surprised too?
KL: That happens only when you do
something with total honesty and believe in
content-driven cinema. I think Bollywood
is also evolving just like Hollywood has.
Hollywood films impress the audience
with their trailers even when half the actors
are unknown. It is the concept and the
gist of a film in the trailer that attracts the
audience. That is why I feel that the first
trailer is make-or-break for your film. Our
audience has evolved and they are smart
enough to pass judgment on a film by the
trailer alone. So you should always make
sure that your trailer is the best.
Along with box-office success, the
kind of respect and love I am receiving is
phenomenal. From Twitter to Facebook
to phone calls, people are giving me so
much affection. It is overwhelming to get a
reaction like this from the audience. Amitji
(Amitabh Bachchan) sent me a beautiful
message. He is a superstar and he didn’t

need to message me. He could have
just messaged Kangana (Ranaut) and
Madhavan but he messaged me too and
that is just so beautiful.
BOI: Were you surprised with Piku’s scale
of success?
SR: Frankly no, because in my head I
had always believed that the film would
do great and my entire team thought I
was cuckoo. I always said ` 100 crore
worldwide. And everyone in my team
thought sathiya gayi hai koi baat nahi
dekhte hai. When we got the numbers,
they all but touched my feet. (Laughs)
So the numbers didn’t surprise me but I
was surprised with the love that we got, the
reaction from the audience and the way
they connected with the story. Everyone
could relate to Piku and realised that either
their father or grandfather is like him.
Everybody had a situation to narrate which
connected them to the story. That strong
reaction from across the world is what
really touched us and was unexpected.
BOI: It is a proud moment for both of you,
backing the right content and going all out
to make and promote what you believe in.
KL: I believe that when you make a film
with honesty, the audience will react
positively to it. I have been producing
films for a long time and I have done only
realistic cinema, like Desi Boyz, which
was a commercial film, and Chalo Dilli,
which was a slice-of-life film. People enjoy
my films and connect with them. Even
NH10. Despite being a dark film, people
connected to it. Undoubtedly, content is
king right now.
BOI: What’s your take on the changing
taste of the audience?
SR: I keep saying this over and over again,
that 2014 will be considered the lowest
year in the industry because it was such a
terrible year. The fact that a lot of big films
did not do well was a wake-up call. I am
glad that a lot of producers sat back and
analysed the situation and figured out what
6 June 2015
Box Office India
was working and what was not. I think we
have all concluded that it’s the script that
matters most, not the projects. You have
to make a film, not a project. I think things
will only get better. So I am glad that the
wake-up call of 2014 has worked for the
films releasing in 2015. For the audience,
it is a good time as they are finally getting
content-driven films. It is obvious that they
were hungry for good content but nobody
was giving it to them. Now films are doing
well back-to-back.
KL: (Cuts in) Hollywood films do well
because they have different content. The
Indian audience goes to watch an English
film because they are different. Now
Bollywood is stepping up and offering the
kind of content that the audience wants.
In 2015, many films have been doing well
and I think this year is good for all of us.
BOI: What was your reaction when you
watched Piku?
KL: I loved the film and I told Deepika
(Padukone) too. As Sneha said, the film
has the ability to connect emotionally with
the audience. The problems in the film are
so relatable… we all know someone like
Amitji’s character. It is a common problem
but no one likes to talk about it, especially
a touchy subject like constipation. (Laughs)
BOI: Share your journey while making Tanu
Weds Manu Returns and Piku.
KL: It was fabulous. It was always like a
party on the sets with Aanandji. Apart
from it being a learning experience, it
was a great shoot because in the break,
Aanandji orders all kinds of cuisine and
it is like a big celebration with so much
food. Sometimes, he literally blackmails
me to eat and would say, ‘I will only take
this shot if you try this jalebi.’ When you
see something you read in a script coming
to life before your very yes, it is a different
kind of high. Some producers feel it is not
important to be on the sets but I personally
feel it is very important to stay connected
with the team and be a part of the making
of the film, especially when you have an
inkling that the film will do well. So to see
the transformation of a script to a feature
film is overwhelming.
I think we have all concluded that
it’s the script that matters most,
not the projects. You have to
make a film, not a project. I think
things will only get better

@BOI
SR: It has been really wonderful for me as
well. With Piku… with Deepika, Irrfan and
Amitji, you just didn’t want the shooting to
end. They even said it in many interviews.
When Amitji was shooting on the last day,
I was in Mumbai and his pack-up shot
was being shot in Ahmedabad, they were
shooting the road trip sequence. I got a
call from Shoojit, saying, ‘We are all in
tears and will you please speak to Boss?’
He calls Amitji ‘boss’. So I spoke to him
and he asked me if we could shoot for a
couple more days. So I asked him what we
would shoot. He said, ‘I don’t know, just
make up something, let this not end.’ And
Irrfan too agreed as Deepika and Irrfan
had a few more days to shoot. Nobody
wanted to leave the set.
The film was shot in Mumbai, Kolkata,
Delhi and Benaras and the unit became
like a family. Then the editing process
started and, after every few days, I kept
calling Shoojit to show us some footage
and he asked us to wait. In January, he
showed us a rough cut. It was fabulous!
I saw the film without the music and it was
a very rough cut but I gave it a standing
ovation. It was just a collection of scenes at
that stage.
Now it feels like a vacuum; we are
not doing anything for Piku. We were so
consumed by Piku for the last nine months
that it feels odd to not be doing something
for that film. It feels strange to see the
standee in my office with me not working
on the film. It’s a huge void.
stories and want to hear more movies
like that. The audience wants to watch
powerful woman doing well. And it’s just
not woman-oriented stories… female
directors, female DoPs… everyone is
growing. So male and female are equal,
there is no comparison. Earlier, the
industry was male-driven but things have
changed and both are equally appreciated.
BOI: What’s your take, Sneha?
SR: My take is similar to what Krishika
just said. I also agree that it started with
The Dirty Picture but I also believe women

have always been very important in our
films. What was Mother India all about?
As long as your story and script are strong
enough, every gender-oriented film will
work. Mother India is a woman-oriented
film and it worked.
KL: (Cuts in) But there was a lull in this
subject after that, for a very long time.
SR: I agree but there was Seeta Aur Geeta
and many more films like that.
KL: (Cuts in) But only a few.
SR: Nobody knew the strength or the
courage because the numbers were
not added clearly. And, more than the
numbers, it was content which was lacking
or maybe we never would have said
that suddenly women-oriented films are
doing well. I don’t think anybody gave it a
chance. But I am glad that these kinds of
films have finally started doing well.
BOI: This was the first film after you
taking over MSM. What is the studio’s
line-up?
SR: Our main focus will be scripts. I am
not looking at actor-oriented script. I mean,
we get calls which say, ‘We have an actor
already in for the project’. But, no, we are
not looking for such films.
KL: (Cuts in) Yes, they call and say, ‘This
‘A’ list actor has been signed in.’ And I am
like, hello, what about the script?’ Without
listening to the script, how can I say yes to
a film? As a producer, I also need to look at
the budget. Otherwise, what will you enjoy
at the box office?
SR: So, yes, the primary focus is the
script; second is casting; and then
costing. So we have announced our
second film, which is Azhar with Balaji
Motion Pictures. That film has been in
discussions with Ekta (Kapoor) for the
last six months. But until all three boxes
were ticked off, we didn’t announce any
project. Going forward, there will be three
more announcements, which we have
BOI: Both films had a very strong female
character. In fact, it was the female
characters around which each film
revolved. Personally, was it especially
gratifying for you to see the films doing
well as you are women producers?
KL: Yes, woman-oriented subjects are
being appreciated more and more. I
believe it all started with The Dirty Picture.
In the end, it’s content that works. If the
content demands a woman in the story,
then why not? A female lead can justify
a character as much as a male-oriented
script can. It’s about telling stories from
different point-of-views. Nowadays, see
people love women-oriented scripts and

been cooking for the last year.
BOI: Any specific genres that you want
your studio to stand for?
SR: No, strictly the script. If it’s a Piku
type of film, fine; if it’s a biopic like Azhar,
good. But the script has to stand out. We
are doing a couple of comedies as well
so there is no hard-and-fast rule on a
particular genre.
KL: (Cuts in) I think we should attempt
different genres because sections of the
audience have different tastes. Everybody
likes variety, so why not give them variety
in content? Even with women-oriented
films, we should not get fixated on one
kind of film. One should always try
different types of content because you
never know what will work on a Friday.
Also formula-oriented films are no longer
working because the audience is open
to a wide variety of films. They watch
Hollywood films and world cinema too. So
they want different genres from us too. As
producers, we have to keep in mind that
content should be good and the budget
must be right. If a film high on content
goes over budget, you don’t make any
money. And if the content is very strong
and you can make the film in a given
budget, you can plan your marketing
strategy accordingly.
BOI: Is it difficult to make a film on a
targeted budget?
KL: While shooting, working backwards
helps. When you can make a film within a
specific budget, why would you increase
your budget? So working backwards
always helps. We work on dates, shooting
on location… everything has to be done
beforehand.
SR: It also helps when you are working
with someone like Shoojit Sircar and
maybe Aanand L Rai because they stick
Television is like fast food and
films are like a seven-course meal,
which you need to prepare and
prepare. So I don’t think you can
compare the two mediums at all,
especially in our country where
television is the only form of entertainment for the masses
– Sneha Rajani
to their budgets. Also, when you work
with directors like them, the scope of
reshooting is nil. I believe we are both
lucky to work with directors who were
clear about what they wanted. Sometimes,
I would ask Shoojit for songs if he has
some scenes. There was nothing extra
shot, there was no lip-sync song, it was
all in the background. When we would
ask him if he had anything in the bank
and he would be, like, ‘I didn’t shoot
anything extra.’
BOI: Your movie stint happened after a
successful career in television. How much
does the television experience translate
while making films? How are the two
mediums different?
SR: They are totally different, like chalk
and cheese. Television is like fast food
and films are like a seven-course meal,
which you need to prepare and prepare.
So I don’t think you can compare the
two mediums at all, especially in our
country where television is the only form
of entertainment for the masses. The kind
of soaps that work on TV will never work
in films.
BOI: When you know you have strong
content, does it change the marketing
strategy of the film in any way?
KL: Why would it change? One always
needs to believe in what one is doing and
go all out to promote it.
BOI: How much does it help when your
director is a co-producer?
KL: It helps in a lot of ways, especially
because we know he will not go overbudget as he is also trying to maximise his
profits. So it’s good, in a way.
BOI: Anything specific you want to tell the
trade?
SR: We are here to make content-driven
cinema. We already announced Azhar
and in the next couple of months, we
will announce a few more films. There is
lot of expectation from us after Piku just
like people must have started asking her
(Krishika) about Tanu Weds Manu 3.
KL: Totally, after NH10 released, people
said, ‘Now make NH12.’ And now
everyone is talking about Tanu Weds
Manu Returns 3. Someone said, ‘Datto Ki
Shaadi Hai.’ People want to watch more of
Datto and what happens to her character.
It would be extremely challenging to write
a third instalment as expectations are
insanely high.
BOI: What next for you, Krishika?
KL: I am planning to get into regional
cinema and have signed a few directors. I
am also planning some films with Aanand
L Rai. Then I am doing Banjo, which
will be directed by a Marathi director
Ravi Jadhav, who has won four National
Awards. His fifth film, which released
along with Gabbar Is Back did equally well
at the box office. So I am looking at the
regional slate. We are also locking some
other projects. It’s a surprise.
BOI: Any regional plans for MSM?
SR: Not right now. We want to sort out
Hindi first, then we will move to other
languages.

INTERVIEW
Big
Is
Better
The much-awaited trailer of Bahubali – The Beginning was unveiled earlier
this week. Apart from being one of the most awaited films of the year,
this film also brings two exceptionally talented professionals together – SS
Rajamouli and Karan Johar. Here’s the duo in conversation with Rohini Nag
Rohini Nag (RN): What kind of response
have you received for the trailer from
the audience and the film fraternity?
SS Rajamouli (SS): It is phenomenal. It is
overwhelming as it’s not just nationwide
but worldwide.
Karan Johar (KJ): We just launched it a
few hours back and already I can feel
my phone buzzing non-stop. I think the
strength of its visuals and, of course, sir
(SS Rajamouli)’s legacy has created this
entire phenomenon that is Bahubali. I
can just tell that unusually for our belt
and the fact that it is a dubbed film, I
don’t think any film has ever generated
so much curiosity and excitement. I
feel this is the first of many more such
collaborations. I feel our cinema should
finally come together and become one
strong platform.
RN: Do you plan to release a series of
trailers of the film or is this ‘the’ trailer?
SS: As of now, this is ‘the’ trailer but as
we go forward, then why not? We will
think about it. Since we have already
had such a tremendous response to the
trailer in a matter of hours, why not?
KJ: (Cuts in) I think while we are at it,
we should actually discuss it. Maybe
pre-release, we could have a trailer
which will be another kind of take on the
film. Very smartly and intelligently, the
element of holding back the plot from
the trailer was a conscious decision that
16
Rajamouli sir concentrated on and made
it a visual spectacle so that when you go
and see the film, you realise there is a
story, a beat and an emotional heartbeat
that the film also has.
RN: Typical Bollywood cine-goers sat up
and took notice of Rajamouli sir when he
made Eega. Was it the same for you?
KJ: I am a student of cinema along with
being a part of the world. So I have been
completely aware of his work. And apart
from a few films that I haven’t watched,
I have seen a lot of his films. He is
somebody I had heard about and I am
sure we were aware of each other’s work
but hadn’t really interacted much. The
awareness was there, for sure. At least at
the business end and the creative end of
our industry, he was one filmmaker that
everyone was very aware of and reveres.
RN: Your film Eega not only enjoyed
commercial success but it also went to
many film festivals, breaking the barrier
of only non-commercial films going to
festivals. Does Bahubali also have the
same potential?
SS: Actually, if you present a film well
and it works with one section of the
audience, it should work with the rest of
the audience as well. That is how I look
at it. Human emotions are the same,
whether in Mumbai or Hyderabad or
Japan or the US. But the relationships and
the emotions remain the same. If you base
your films on those emotions, they will
work everywhere. How you present it is
a completely different issue. I don’t know
how to present my films here, so Karanji is
here to do that as he is the master of that.
He will probably do that worldwide.
RN: When did Dharma Productions step
in and become a part of the film?
KJ: I think talks were on for over a year
but everything shaped up and was
finalised in the last six to eight months.
RN: What was it about Bahubali that
attracted you to present the film?
KJ: Just the fact that it is a first of its kind
in terms of visuals and narrative. Also,
the fact that I don’t think that a feature
film has been made on this level and this
scale, with this kind of hold to integrate
technology. When you see the visuals,
the first thing that comes to mind is
‘who has made this film?’ That is, if you
don’t know anything about him. I was
so keen that the Hindi belt, the Hindi
film-watching audience, also gets a feel
of the scale of the film. They should also
feel the kind of pride that I feel because
it is integral that the cine-goer and every
living Indian and Asian should see this
film to know that India is totally capable
of walking the path of an international
arena of filmmaking. He is one filmmaker
who gets his vision translated to celluloid

and I think his level of discipline and the
tenacity to do so is commendable.
RN: Creatively, were you involved…
KJ: (Cuts in) Not at all. I have nothing
to do with the film but I so wish I was
involved. I so desire that I was a part
of the making of the film, not only
as a student of cinema but also as a
filmmaker. I feel I would have learnt so
much and I wanted to be on the sets
but couldn’t manage it because of the
timeline. But maybe when sir makes his
next film, I will assist him for a week or
something.
And we have young filmmakers at
Dharma like Ayan (Mukerji) who is
making a computer graphic film. I want
him to come and meet sir just for a chat.
There is so much for young filmmakers
to learn from him.
SS: (Cuts in) Please don’t send him or
he will get to know what a novice I am
(Laughs).
KJ: No I am sending him (Laughs).
RN: Will we see Karan sir assisting you
in your next film?
KJ: Well, ‘assisting’ might be pushing
it. But I would very happily sit as an
observer on his set. That is something I
really aspire to do.
SS: Bahubali is a two-part film. In the
second production, we will take his
valuable advice in the production aspect
of the film.
KJ: (Cuts in) And I really believe this
collaboration is core essential because
it will open many doors. Not every film
warrants this kind of nationwide viewing.
But I am sure there are more films that
do and I think it is wonderful that we
are being given this opportunity to take
his vision and give it a larger platform.
Which filmmaker doesn’t want maximum
eyeballs? I mean, that is what we all
aspire for.
When you work this hard and create
this kind of labour of love, the biggest
dream of a filmmaker is that more and
more people see it. I don’t think any
of us, even Rajamouli sir himself, aims
to walk the red carpet at the Academy
Awards. I mean, it is not everyone’s
dream. The dream is maximum
viewership of their film.
RN: So this is not a one-off for Dharma
Productions?
KJ: When I really feel passionate about
something, I go ahead with it. Like with
The Lunchbox, we did the same thing.
The Lunchbox was the exact opposite
of Bahubali. While Bahubali is the
biggest motion picture, The Lunchbox
is the tiniest film. But it is never about
scale, it’s about soul. Sometimes even
a scale shot can be soulless. But in
6 June 2015

his world, every opulent shot has a
heartbeat, it connects to something
larger emotionally. I think that has to
resonate. Just putting in big shots and
spending money… anyone can do that.
But not everybody can connect with the
audience with that level of opulence.
RN: Is that the common thread between
Dharma Productions and Rajamouli sir…
your films always connect emotionally
with the audience?
KJ: I think filmmakers don’t need to be
compared. I wish I could be compared
to him but I don’t think I have the talent
or the totality or the ability. But what I
do have is the passion and I think that
is what we have in common. I am sure
he would agree with me that it is the
sincerity and passion to tell a story, and
to tell it with the utmost conviction that
you have. Rajamouli sir himself has said
that his characters have been with him
since a long time and he had visualised
this world a long time ago. It had
become a part of his ethos. Like I grew
up loving Yash Chopra’s films but we all
tell our stories in our own different ways.
RN: How was Bahubali conceived?
SS: That is a long story but to cut it
short, right from my childhood, I was
raised on Amar Chitra Katha. My father
would take me to the library in our small
town, so that I could read comics. I don’t
know what I learnt in school because
these stories were what I grew up with!
Even in college, these are the things I
learnt from, whether our history or our
folklore or our human emotions and
even our mythology. All the larger-thanlife characters stayed with me. So from
childhood, I have been living in those
fantasies. Becoming a filmmaker, getting
these characters and getting the story
happened in the course of time. But I
am living there, I was always living there.
As far back as I can remember, I was
living in that world. But bringing that
world to celluloid took a lot of money and
luckily I had a string of successful films
and I had producers who believed in my
world. Everything fell into place.
RN: How tough was the pre-production
and production of the film?
SS: Everything was very tough in a way
but also not very tough. Tough because
a film like this was never made and
tough because we were shooting with
different technologies and used visual
effects that were never done before. So
there were so many new things that we
were doing and that was tough. But I
had a set of technicians who are masters
of their craft and each one of them has
knowledge of every other department.
Thanks to the team I had, we were able
Hindi films have a larger audience
and I would be lying if I said I
don’t have any ambitions to direct
a Hindi film. But, right now, I have
commitments down South and I
need to fulfill them before I plan
to make a Hindi film
to make Bahubali.
RN: Why didn’t you opt for Hindi film
stars to dub for the Hindi dubbed version
of the film?
KJ: Because then there would be a level
of heftiness for no rhyme or reason.
I think the story is the hero and the
narrative is the strength of the film. The
scale of the film is a huge add-on and
I did not want to make it gimmicky by
asking well-known Hindi artists to dub.
In animation, you can do these things
because it is a created pop culture
world. But, here, they are entities in their
own right and to add the voices of known
actors would have only confused the
audience. I think it is nice to have alien
voices so that you focus on the story
and the narrative and not something that
people would feel, arey, yeh Shah Rukh
(Khan) ki awaaz hain or Salman (Khan)
or Aamir (Khan) ki awaaz hain.
RN: What kind of marketing strategy will
you use to promote the Hindi version of
the film?
KJ: I think the visuals are doing the
marketing. I have branded it but I really
don’t think that we need to make sure
it is visual all over the place, like on
television or online. Our job, as Dharma
Productions, is that we make it visible
but I think the film’s visuals are doing
the talking. I think there is no better
marketing tool than the film itself. I feel
sometimes we go to unnecessary cities
and television shows, which don’t add
up to anything. I think the film is its own

marketing tool and the first promo is
doing all the talking. I would request sir
to have one more trailer, which I think
would help the spike before the release.
I think that will be a supplementary addon because in his zone, he doesn’t need
anything else. All he needs to do is put
his name out and he has an audience
waiting, an audience which can’t wait to
get inside the auditorium to watch his
film. We are spreading awareness here
and despite with his backlog of work,
the media has been very supportive.
They already know of his vision and his
existence in the world of cinema. I think
that has given a great head-start.
RN: The story of the film has been written
by your father V Vijayendra Prasad.
Creatively, how involved was he while
making the film?
SS: For this film, particularly, I had a lot of
help from him while editing. We had such
a lengthy shoot and we had hours and
hours of footage. He used to give me so
many options and he used to sit with me
on the edits and give me options.
RN: The film has been dubbed in
languages other than Hindi. With regard
to the narrative, is there any difference
between the various versions?
SS: No, the narrative is the same. We
shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil
and we have dubbed the film in Hindi
and Malayalam. All four versions are
the same.
RN: Your association with AA Films goes
back a long way. Was it easy for you to
get Anil Thadani on board for Bahubali?
KJ: Anil and I are college friends. He was
actually very excited about it. When he
heard that I was interested in this film
and that I was already talking with the
producers Prasad (Devineni) and Shobu
(Yarlagadda), he said ‘you can’t do this
film without me’. Since he had done
Shankar’s film I, he had heard about this
film a long time ago. There is no doubt
he is exceptionally knowledgeable about
how to release a film. I always respect
his judgment on all our films and also on
his release strategy.
I am a producer and I can give a
platform to a film but for the physical
job of distribution I needed that
resource with me. Anil and I work
together and I like the fact that he is
a decision maker and I am a decision
maker, we don’t have to go through a
studio and the rigmarole of listening
to another 60 people. It’s like it is sir’s
vision, I am giving it a platform for
Hindi language and Anil is providing the
infrastructure. It is very simple and we
don’t complicate it.
18
RN: So there is no collision of ideas with
both of you being decision makers?
KJ: On a film like this, no. Having said
that, we collaborated with UTV on
The Lunchbox but on this film I felt
we needed a lot of conviction. The
Lunchbox was tinier whereas this film
is larger and I feel the larger the film,
the more conviction plays an important
role. And for conviction to play an
important part, there should be very
few heads (Laughs).
RN: There are about 17 VFX studios
with 600 artists working on the film.
Creatively, how tough is it to handle the
post-production of the film?
SS: More than creatively, it was
physically tough. Every day, you would
need to make 10 to 15 important
decisions regarding the shots and
sequences. Some scenes are 80 per
cent okay and 20 per cent not okay.
When a shot is 20 per cent okay and 80
per cent not okay, it is easy to take that
call but when a shot is 95 per cent okay
and five per cent not okay…
KJ: Those were tough decisions.
SS: Yes, and when you have the release
date fast approaching... And when there
is a small mistake in a shot that the
audience can spot, decisions like that
take a toll. But managing 17 studios and
600 artists is not a difficult job because
my visual effects supervisor Srinivas
Mohan is an exceptionally talented
man. He is very soft-spoken but when it
I have nothing to do with the film
but I so wish I was involved. I
so desire that I was a part of the
making of the film, not only as a
student of cinema but also as a
filmmaker
Bahubali
comes to his job, he knows how to get
the job done.
RN: During your 15 years in the industry,
has the thought of making a Hindi film
ever crossed your mind?
SS: (Laughs) The same question was
asked when Makkhi released. As a
storyteller, you want your stories to
be heard by the maximum number of
people. That is the ultimate dream of
every storyteller. A filmmaker wants the
maximum number of people to watch
their film and emote to their characters
and their story. Obviously, Hindi films
have a larger audience and I would be
lying if I said I don’t have any ambitions
to direct a Hindi film. But, right now, I
have commitments down South and I
need to fulfill them before I plan to make
a Hindi film.
KJ: (Cuts in) But you promise if you
make a Hindi film, you will make it with
me. I will not allow you to work with
anybody else (Laughs).
RN: Where does this film stand in Dharma
Productions’ filmography?
KJ: It is our first release of the year.
We have three releases this year and
Bahubali is our first release. Our entire
team is excited because it flags off our
year. And when you flag off something
well, it sets the tone for the rest of the
year. We are very excited and we have
kept this zone clear as we want to our
focus our energies on Bahubali.
RN: What can the audience expect from
Bahubali?
SS: A world they have never seen before.
We have really transported a world that
they have never experienced before.
That is what I promise the audience.
RN: How large a release are you planning
for the Hindi version of the film?
KJ: Anil and I are going to sit on it much
later. It all depends on the other releases
before and after the film. But it will
have the biggest release for a dubbed
language. Fortunately, we are the solo
release of the week. At least, I hope
we are, and I think we have got the
exhibitors very excited.

JULY PREVIEW PART 2
TEEN LOVE, VIDEO GAME MONSTERS &
MORE FROM ETHAN HUNT
by BoxOffice® Pro Staff / North American release dates
Paper Towns
July 24
Adapted from John Green’s young-adult novel of
the same name and starring Nat Wolff from The
Fault in Our Stars, another Green adaptation,
Paper Towns focuses on Quentin “Q” Jacobsen
(Wolff), who takes a road trip with his best friends
to find his missing next-door neighbor and also
the girl of his dreams, Margo Roth Spiegelman
(Cara Delevingne). Clearly aiming for fans of The
Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns looks to duplicate
its successful run of $307 million worldwide.
Pixels
July 24 (3D)
Who hasn’t felt like they’re saving the world while
playing a video game? In Pixels, Sam Brenner
(Adam Sandler), William Cooper (Kevin James),
Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie Plant
(Peter Dinklage) live out that fantasy as a team of
supergamers tasked with saving humanity from
aliens who are bent on destroying us with weaponry inspired by 1980s video games. Space Invaders,
Centipede, Pac-Man, Frogger, and Donkey Kong
have all been licensed for use in the film.

Southpaw
July 24
Originally intended as a vehicle for Eminem,
Southpaw now stars Jake Gyllenhaal as oncesuccessful prizefighter Billy Hope, clawing his way
back into the ring with the help of trainer Titus
“Tick” Wills (Forest Whitaker) in order to reunite
with his daughter. The film could get a huge push
from its prominent advertising campaign during
the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight
in May.
Vacation
July 29
Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) decides to take his
own family on a road trip to Wally World before
it shuts down forever in this reboot of the classic
1983 National Lampoon’s Vacation. Chevy Chase
and Beverly D’Angelo reprise their roles as Clark
and Ellen Griswold, with Leslie Mann playing a
grown-up Audrey. The film’s trailer was premiered
at CinemaCon this spring to huge applause and
laughter and looks to score big across several
demographics.
The Gift
July 31
Jason Bateman’s first foray into the horror/thriller
genre, The Gift follows young married couple Simon (Bateman) and Robin (Rebecca Hall), whose
nice upper-middle-class life is thrown into disarray
after they run into Simon’s old classmate, Gordo
(writer/director Joel Edgerton). Gordo’s harmless
attempts at befriending his new neighbors quickly
descend into creepy stalking, but is there something lurking in Gordo and Simon’s past that can
shed some light on their relationship?
Mission: Impossible–Rogue Nation
July 31 (IMAX)
Ethan Hunt (Cruise) assembles his team for their
most impossible mission to date: taking down the
Syndicate, a rogue organization of assassins with
skills that rival their own and bent on destroying the IMF. Cruise rejoins director Christopher
McQuarrie, whom he first worked with on 2012’s
Jack Reacher, which pulled in $217 million worldwide. This is the fifth installment in the Mission:
Impossible series, which has grossed nearly $2.1
billion globally since 1996.

Put On Your Dancing Shoes
Album: ABCD 2
Banner: UTV Motion Pictures,
Walt Disney Pictures
Producer: Siddharth Roy Kapur
Music Director: Sachin-Jigar
Lyrics: Mayur Puri, Priya Saraiya,
D.Soldierz, Rimi Nique
Label: Zee Music Company
O
ver the years, Sachin-Jigar has
delivered some of the most
versatile albums, whether
ABCD, Go Goa Gone, Happy Ending
or Badlapur. After the success of
Remo D’Souza’s dance-inspired movie
ABCD, a lot is riding on the sequel.
Once again, the composer duo has
been entrusted with the responsibility
of creating a dance album that
justifies the flavour of the film. Have
the composers succeeded a second
time and risen above the pressure of
anticipation or have they succumbed to
it? Well, let’s see.
While one expects the dance album
to start on a groovy club track, the
soundtrack of ABCD 2 takes an unusual
route. Rather, the album boasting of
ten tracks, kicks off with a soft song
Chunar, which is probably an ode to
mothers. As the ever-dependable Arijit
Singh impresses with his vocals, the
musical arrangement does equal justice
to the number. The composers have
played with a blend of contemporary and
classical music, emphasising the longing
feel projected through Mayur Puri’s lyrics
in the song. The jugalbandi between
guitar and mridangam is commendable.
Sachin-Jigar turn up the sound of
the album a notch with the track Sun
saathiya, a song that was left out of
the previous instalment. Sung by Priya
Saraiya and Divya Kumar, the song
picturised on Sharaddha Kappor is
already receiving accolades, not only
for flawless dance moves but also for
harmonious singing. The vocals, which
have been the focus of the track, have
been beautifully justified by the Western
and Indian orchestration.
The chartbuster Bezubaan is back with
a complete new look as Bezubaan phir se.
Increasing the intensity of the track, the
composers have roped in Vishal Dadlani
with Madhav Krishna and Anushka
Manchanda. Krishna and Manchanda’s
soft vocal act to Dadlani’s gruelling
rendition. The amalgamation of percussion
beats with EDM- style music towards
the climax escalates the track to another
level. While the earlier track was a plea of
expectance, this highlights one’s desire
and fervor. This number will definitely find
a place on every dancer’s playlist.
Up next is the quirky racy hip-hop
track Happy birthday sung by SachinJigar, Varun Dhavan and D Soldierz.
With previous songs like Khooni monday
and G phadke, it seems like having at
least one quirky track in an album has
become a signature style of SachinJigar. The song tickles the funny bone,
especially where the Jai mata di chant is
replaced with Happy birthday.
On the same lines is the track Happy
hour by Mika Singh. The laidback singing
is asserted with musical arrangements
that navigate multiple genres and
sounds. But, overall, the song isn’t all
that impressive and is better viewed as a
situational track.
Benny Dayal goes behind the mic
for If you hold my hand and Nach meri
jaan. While the first one is a typical
boy-band song, the latter is a lively
dance track. Nach meri jaan ensues
a mixture of various dance routines
including Latino, thanks to its musical
arrangement. The orchestration flows
from club electronic beats into hip-hop
beats to Latino tunes. The number
guarantees excellent choreography.
Be ready to hear Hey ganaraya
blasting through every speaker in the
upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival.
The composers have taken the famous
Ganesh bhajan with the classical raaga.
The track is easily one of the best
songs of the album and walks side by
side with famous Shambu Sutaya. Divya
Kumar has done a great job on this
rendition, complimenting the grueling
musical arrangement.
Tatoo by Shefali Alvares is an item
number featuring a mix of contemporary
and folksy language and tunes. Vande
Mataram is a situational track and
possibly the finale song. The number,
laden with dramatic and flashy music,
and doesn’t impress.
Verdict: The album endorses SachinJigar as one of the most versatile
composers
– Swagata Panjari
Back After 14 Years
S
onu Nigam has teamed
up with music composer
Sandesh Shandilya for the
upcoming film Chalk N Duster.
The singer and the composer will
be working together after 14 years.
They have earlier worked together
for Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi
Kabhie Gham..., where Nigam
had crooned two songs Suraj hua
maddham and Deewana hai dekho.
For Chalk N Duster, he will sing
a song penned by Javed Akhtar.
It is said to be a heartwarming
number. The movie revolves around
the apathy of teachers in India and
focuses on the commercialisation
26
of the education system.
On the collaboration, Shandilya says,
“I got my first break as a composer in
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and my first
composition Suraj hua maddham was
sung by Sonu. It was an exhilarating
experience. I hope we can recreate
the same magic in this one, too.”
Written by Ranjeev Varma, the
film is directed by Jayant Gilatar and
stars actresses Shabana Azmi, Juhi
Chawla, Zarina Wahab and Divya Dutta
in major roles along with Anupam
Kher, Jackie Shroff, Sameer Soni
and Arya Babbar in pivotal roles.

Three Cheers
Yesterday marked the release of National Award-winning director Shrabani Deodhar’s Marathi
film Sata Lota Pan Sangla Khota. We spoke to the three protagonists of the film – Adinath
Kothare, Siddharth Chandekar and Pooja Sawant. Here’s the trio in conversation with Box
Office India
ADINATH KOTHARE
Your Marathi film Sata
Lota Pan Sangla Khota
released yesterday.
How does it feel?
I am really excited
about the film. We
are promoting it
in the best way
possible. School
and college
vacations are
almost over so
people will start to
get busy with work
and kids, especially, will
be busy resuming college
and school. This film is the last
refreshing dose of entertainment for
them as it is an out-an-out family
entertainer. This film is very close to
my heart as I am very close to the
28
producers. My blockbuster
film Zappatlela 2 was
produced by them
and hence I hold
them in a very
high regard.
What was it
like working
with director
Shrabani
Deodhar?
It was a
privilege working
with her as she
is just amazing with
her work. She knows
how to get performances out of her
actors. She gave us the liberty to
be ourselves and suggested that
we don’t try to force our characters
to be funny. The script was funny
in any case, so we didn’t have to
do much to make our characters
funny. A fabulous script which is
written well is half the battle won
and the way Shrabani tai narrated it
to me is exactly what we did during
the shoot. She is one of the main
reasons I signed the film and the
other, of course, is the content.
Actually, she and I have worked
together before, when she was
Star Pravaah’s channel head
and I had produced a serial
for the channel. But, here, the
experience was totally different.
What is your character in the
film? What was the brief given
to you to approach your role?
My character’s name is Jay and he
Box Office India
6 June 2015
has a best friend whose name is
Veeru, who is played by Siddharth
Chandekar. The camaraderie
between the characters was
exceptional. We are good friends off
screen as well, so it was not tough to
translate that friendship on screen.
Jay is really sweet as he’s good at
heart and honest but his innocence
gets him into all sorts of trouble.
You have always chosen different
roles. How do you choose your films?
First, the script should inspire me
and the second criterion is the team
– director and the producers. I have
also played a supporting character
in many films, thanks to the scripts
and the way they inspired me. Being
part of good, content-driven films
gives me creative satisfaction. I am
a passionate actor and it is very
important for me to get creative
satisfaction from the roles I play.
Marathi cinema is known for
commercial and content-oriented
films. How do you balance your
career between the two genres?
I feel the Marathi industry is very
content-driven and it is the content
that is the real star. And this is why
we have good viewership. I also
feel that our cinema is realistic
and translates real stories on
celluloid. Diverse content gives us
actors the liberty to experiment
with a greater range of roles too.
What’s your next project?
I am doing a bilingual Hindi film
directed by Mahesh Manjrekar.
The title is yet to be finalised.
POOJA SAWANT
Your Marathi film Sata Lota
Pan Sangla Khota released
yesterday. How does it feel?
I am super excited about the release.
It’s a romantic comedy filled with
thriller elements as far as
the genre of the film
goes. I have mixed
emotions along
with excitement
and I am
nervous too. But
it is a good kind
of nervousness.
What was it
like working
with director
Shrabani Deodhar?
It’s a privilege to work
with her and I feel lucky
to be a part of this film. She
trusted me and encouraged me to play
this character, which is the opposite
of who I really am. She was more like
a mother on the sets and not like a
typical director. I noticed that when
we were not shooting, most of us
used to relax in vanity vans but she
would be on the set, working and
discussing with the DoP about the
next scene. She is inspirational.
What is your character in the
film? What was the brief given
to you to approach your role?
My character Ishika is a bubbly
character and she belongs to a rich
family. She enjoys all the luxury
she could want but she witnesses
poor people and their lifestyle
and starts to like it. She starts
doing things that a poor person
would. Finally, she meets Jay and
when she gets to know that he is
an orphan and teaches in a small
school, she falls in love with him.
You have always chosen
different roles. How do you
choose your films?
I never choose my films. I am
blessed as I have always got good
films. I chose this film because of
Shrabani tai. I was sure she would
give me a good role and flesh
out my character beautifully.
Marathi films are known for
commercial and content-Oriented
films. How do you balance your
career between the two genres?
Marathi films always have strong
content and directors always
study the subjects of their films
just like Shrabani tai does.
There aren’t too many Marathi
films without good content.
What’s your next project?
My next films are Dagndi
Chawl and Vrindawan.

SIDDHARTH
CHANDEKAR
Your Marathi
film Sata Lota
Pan Sangla
Khota released
yesterday. How
does it feel?
I’m really
happy, especially
happy for
Shrabani tai, as
she’s coming back
after a long time to
Marathi cinema. She was
more excited than any of us were.
What was it like working with
director Shrabani Deodhar?
It was a superb experience. She is
an amazing director and one of the
best I have ever worked with. When
Adinath, Pooja and Mrunmayee were
together on the sets, it was like a
house on fire. We gave her some
hard times but, in the end, we regard
her like a mother and we respect her
even more. She is young at heart
and is a caring director but at the
same time she knows how to draw
performances out of her actors.
What is your character in the
film? What was the brief given
to you to approach your role?
My character’s name is Veeru, who
comes up with ideas ranging from
crazy to awful. It was great to play
a character with notorious antics.
You have always chosen different
roles. How do you choose your films?
I always go by instinct. Whenever the
film or a character brief is narrated to
me, I step into the character’s zone
to see whether I would suit the role
and be able to justify it. I take up
a project only if it appeals to me.
Marathi cinema is known for
commercial and content-oriented
films. How do you balance your
career between the two genres?
I feel 95 per cent of Marathi cinema
has beautiful content, and most
Marathi commercial films have
the ability to connect with the
audience, which makes our industry
a win-win for both commercial
and content-driven films.
What’s your next project?
My upcoming film is Online Binline,
which is set to release on July 3.
It’s an Internet generation film
targeted at the young audience.

SYNOPSIS
Juliet, Charlotte and Helen are
sisters and total opposites
of each other. Helen is a
snobbish gallery owner;
Charlotte is in a relationship
with an introverted computer
engineer; and Juliet is a
musical prodigy mourning
for her fiancé. Each one goes
through a period of doubt that
shadows their future together.
Yeonui’s sole purpose for
living is her autistic son. One
day, a loan shark threatens
her to recover her gambling
husband’s debt. To protect
her son and keep him away
from her violent husband, she
puts her boy in a subway coin
locker before she sets off to
return the money.
A Mexican folk music group
is to perform at a national
competition in Mexico City
but they have to find an
eighth member to qualify.
They decide to recruit the
son of one of the members.
The eight men endure many
challenges which could
become the beginning of
the end for the band.
Ozan and Caner end their
time search for a house
with a cheap, furnished and
dilapidated mansion. They
befriend the ghost who lives
in it and begin to see other
spirits. Along with ‘Uncle
Ghost’, they help other
ghosts who are in purgatory
and need assistance.
Midori and Masao have
fallen out of love but when
Midori becomes pregnant,
the couple decides to
get married despite their
differences. As they become
more familiar with each
other’s backgrounds,
they begin to understand
each other better.
