ASPIRING, INSPIRING - Cardinal Ritter College Preparatory High
ASPIRING, INSPIRING, EMPOWERED FOR LIFE The mission of Cardinal Ritter College Prep High School is to provide an exceptional Catholic educational experience to youth that instills attitudes of success and self- worth through faith development, academic excellence and leadership. ASPIRING, INSPIRING, EMPOWERED FOR LIFE A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT PRIDE. FAMILY. COMMUNITY. POSITIVE IMAGE. RESPECT FOR HISTORY. These values that Cardinal Ritter Prep instilled in me as a student remain with me and have shaped the person who I have become. When I started as a student at Cardinal Ritter Prep, my parents were proud to send me to a school that challenged students and prepared them for a successful future, while achieving 100% graduation rates and college acceptances. I was happy to be in a place that celebrated me as an individual, through a nurturing and accepting environment. Now, I am blessed to return to this community which has made a significant impact upon my life. As excited as I am to continue the Ritter mission, I realize we still have work to do. My focus as President of Cardinal Ritter Prep will be to increase student enrollment, enhance the excellent academic, faith, and leadership programs, celebrate the excellence of athletic and artistic endeavors, lead fundraising efforts, and manage civic and corporate outreach. I will do this while still fostering that same nurturing and accepting environment that I experienced years ago. Count on me to reach out to our vast alumni who are living the Ritter mission. Physicians, entertainers, investment bankers, business owners, executives, community activists, attorneys, musicians, teachers, and journalists, to name a few, will testify to the Ritter mission of Faith Development, Academic Excellence, and Leadership. They will share stories of how Cardinal Ritter Prep helped to shape their lives, to enhance their value system, and to prepare them for a world they can proudly face with courage and confidence. This is precisely what we want to accomplish and create for the class of 2015 and beyond. Join me in preparing our future leaders. No rhetoric; just proven success. That’s the real Ritter! All my best, Tamiko Armstead, ‘91 President A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT EMERITUS Dear Friends, During the past year, I have thought a lot about the Cardinal Ritter College Prep legacy. It is a blessing and truly amazing that we are still accomplishing what we intended from CRCP’s inception in August of 1979. For example, our 100% graduation and acceptance rate into college rate each year has remained intact as demonstrated by the class of 2014. They garnered 4.7 million dollars in scholarship money. Our faculty continues to make its mark in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Mr. Shante Lyons, our Leadership Department Director for this past school year, received the Peabody Leaders Award. This is the second consecutive year that one of our faculty members received this award. A select group of our students participated in the statewide Missouri Courts Constitution Project, which involved intensive competition whereby, high school students gained experiences in the fields of journalism, crime scene investigation, and trial advocacy. Cardinal Ritter Prep was the only St. Louis City School competing in the project which was sponsored by the Missouri Courts. Our students performed well. • We had the esteemed pleasure of having one of our Alumni, Dr. Margena Christian, Managing Editor for Ebony Magazine, speak at our Gala. She also addressed our entire student body at a special assembly. • We are still engaged in a special partnership with Nine Network where our students have been serving as interns working on various media endeavors. • Cardinal Ritter Prep was acknowledged by receiving the St. Charles Lwanga Center’s Torchbearer’s Award for its long tradition of educationally preparing students in the St. Louis area. • Our boy’s basketball team won the Missouri State 3-A Basketball Championship 2014. The Cardinal Ritter College Prep tradition continues to have a glowing impact on the community at large through its alumni, teachers and students. Our students, past and present, continually make a difference locally, state-wide, and nationally. Your financial support remains essential in assisting us in forming our students as dedicated citizens, seeking to positively transform our communities. We thank you for that ongoing support of our mission. We will need your continual assistance. This year we celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Cardinal Ritter College Prep legacy. Your participation as stakeholders remains a national model for how the civic, private and business sectors can find ways to reinforce excellent educational opportunities like Cardinal Ritter Prep in St. Louis. The mission of Cardinal Ritter College Prep is more than its strong focus on academic achievement. It expects its students to serve the broader community as active citizens by fostering a better community, city, state, nation and world. Again, we thank you for all that you do in aiding this special CRCP mission by helping our students make a difference. Peace and Blessings, Leon C. Henderson President Emeritus ASPIRING, INSPIRING, EMPOWERED FOR LIFE A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCHBISHOP Cardinal Joseph Ritter was a courageous leader at a time when the safe thing to do was to maintain the status quo. Cardinal Ritter’s decision to integrate our Catholic schools—before the United States Supreme Court declared segregation unconstitutional for the nation’s public schools--showed that he was a religious and community leader well ahead of his time. Today, another Church leader—this one from Argentina--is challenging us to move outside of our “comfort zones” and to do whatever is necessary to help those who are poor and marginalized achieve their true potential as human persons made in the image and likeness of their creator, God. I’m referring to Pope Francis, of course. His humility, simplicity and commitment to speak the truth with love have won the respect of people the world over from every walk of life and every ethnic, social and religious tradition. Since I arrived in St. Louis six years ago, I have been speaking about my vision for schools like Cardinal Ritter. Simply stated, I believe our schools should beAlive in Christ! I believe this vision is consistent with what Pope Francis is asking every Catholic organization to be: “spirit-filled” and committed to carrying out Christ’s work, especially in places where it is not easy or comfortable to do so. The work of Cardinal Ritter is not easy, nor is it comfortable. It challenges all of us to move beyond our comfort zones in order to make sure that the deserving students who attend this unique college preparatory academy have opportunities that will truly make a difference—in their lives and in the communities they will serve after they graduate from CRCP. Cardinal Ritter is a dramatic story of success. Simply stated, this school offers an educational program based on the pillars of faith in God, educational excellence and leadership, regardless of race, creed, ethnic background or financial position. We make it possible for every student to reach her or his full potential. And we have the results to prove it! • Achieved 100% graduation rate • Achieved 100% percent post secondary education acceptance rate • Earned $4.7 million in scholarship offers to colleges and universities Corporate and civic community support of the CRCP mission has and will always play a significant and vital role in the lives of our Ritter students. Please continue to be courageous leaders who go way beyond the status quo and make a real difference in the lives of children who deserve the very best. Let us prove that urban education does not have to mean poor quality or failed programs and continue to build up Cardinal Ritter College Prep as an inspiring school that our community and our Church can be proud of. Amy Shaw Senior Vice President of Community Engagement ANNYCE ECHOLS CLASS OF 2011 BIOLOGY/CHEMISTRY MAJOR SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY INSPIRING Students that I meet in college say that they never really had to put a lot of effort into studying for classes in high school. But the rigorous courses that I took at Cardinal Ritter College Prep helped me to develop great study habits that have led to success in my college experience. What makes Cardinal Ritter special is that it really does focus on getting students prepared for college. I love that this school teaches its students about African and African American history. The fact that we have classes solely dedicated to teach us about our past, and how we are truly standing on the shoulders of giants, really makes Cardinal Ritter a one of a kind institution. ASPIRING Cardinal Ritter allows students to truly be themselves. I always felt free to express my ideas and opinions without judgment or criticism. There really was a sense of family at the school. I felt this familial atmosphere not only amongst my classmates but also among the lower and upper classmen. I remember the comradery that all the students had at sporting events, pep rallies, and even during classes. EMPOWERED FOR LIFE My biology/genetics teacher Mrs. Spain helped me to develop a strong science foundation and to realize that I wanted to pursue a career in Biochemistry. She is one of the best science teachers that I have ever had and really pushed me to succeed. I am currently a senior at Saint Louis University pursuing a B.S. in Biochemistry. The good study habits along with the strong science foundation that Cardinal Ritter provided me has led to my success here at SLU and will continue to help me as I advance in my career. ASPIRING, INSPIRING, EMPOWERED FOR LIFE ERIN FOWLER CLASS OF 2007 ATTORNEY AT LAW FRANCZEK RADELET ATTORNEYS & COUNSELORS INSPIRING At Cardinal Ritter I was able to do anything I set my mind to. Having really great teachers in my corner who believed in me gave me confidence. I graduated from law school in May, and begin working in Chicago next month. The Intern Leadership Program at Cardinal Ritter instilled in me the knowledge of how to be professional. Learning professionalism in high school, made it that much easier to put those skills into practice throughout college and law school. Cardinal Ritter helped me to figure out this next step in my life. ASPIRING Education was encouraged and doing well was encouraged at Cardinal Ritter. We all strived for it. It was a safe learning environment where people were not put down for wanting to do well, get good grades and go on to do great things. There is a true familial nature to the school. One hundred percent of Cardinal Ritter students get accepted to college. That speaks to how we all felt about our education. EMPOWERED FOR LIFE Cardinal Ritter is a very unique school. The focus on how God works in our lives and how we should always strive to live our lives in a Godly way sets the tone for how we behave in school and how we are disciplined. We take this with us when we leave. The emphasis on African American culture helped me to learn a lot about myself and my history. It helped me to feel comfortable as an African American female. It built confidence in me. Having that history alongside the emphasis on religion and education provided such a unique learning experience. CATHRYN McINTOSH CLASS OF 2009 PHARM. D. CANDIDATE 2015 SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY – EDWARDSVILLE INSPIRING Cardinal Ritter really provides a positive learning environment. The instructors at CRCP facilitate student growth and strive to prepare students, not only for college, but also for life. Students are required to do community service, encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities, and expected to excel academically. CRCP focuses on developing the overall character of students instead of just assigning grades. I left Cardinal Ritter with a sense of pride in my heritage, a firm foundation in religion, and confidence in my own personal abilities. My best friends from high school have grown with me over the years, and they currently comprise a large portion of my support system. These people became my extended family. ASPIRING Instructors at Cardinal Ritter stimulated my creativity and challenged me to surpass my own expectations. Numerous people influenced me during my time at Cardinal Ritter. Mrs. Neff illustrated that attention to detail and creativity are essential traits. Mr. Edwards emphasized the importance of knowing your heritage and valuing all individuals. Mrs. Reid stressed self-awareness and self-discipline. These lessons were not formally taught but implied through daily activities. The small class sizes at CRCP gave instructors the opportunity to get to know their students. All of my instructors could address me by name. As a student, I firmly believed that the faculty had my best interests at heart. All of these efforts helped to equip me for the obstacles I would face, not only in college, but also throughout life. I know my Cardinal Ritter family will support me no matter what. EMPOWERED FOR LIFE As an assignment for the Intern Leadership Program, students had to research potential future careers and the qualifications needed to have that career. I decided to do my report on pharmacy. After that moment, one of my primary goals was to have a career in the pharmaceutical field. Through the Intern Leadership Program, I was able to get a summer job working in a pharmacy. Not only did CRCP help me get real world work experience, but the school also equipped me with the foundational knowledge in English, science, and math that I would need for a successful future.
