Illustrious Potentate Phillip W. Smith
Illustrious Potentate Phil Smith was born in 1945 in Evansville, Indiana to Charles and Sylvia Smith.
Graduated from Castle High School and attended Purdue and Evansville Universities. Worked for
Alcoa Warrick Works before starting Custom Cycle and Mobility Supply in 1969, which he still
operates.
He served as a Paramedic in the 82nd and 101st Airborne units of the Army, reaching the level of
Sergeant E-5 and Captain of the Division Rifle team.
Phil's love of motorcycling led him to organized motorcycle fund raisers for the Visiting Nurse Association and then the "Little Sturgis Rally for Charity" in Sturgis, KY that benefited Sturgis area
charities and civic organizations. He also initiated the Hadi Toy Run that benefits the Shrine Hospitals.
His Masonic life began in Constellation Lodge #748 in 1980, where he was raised as a Master Mason by his father. In 1987
Phil became Master of Constellation Lodge and in 1999 He raised his son Michael as a Master Mason. He is a Noble and Divan member of Hadi Shriners, Past President of the Hadi Motor Corps, member of Valley of Evansville Scottish Rite, Evansville York Rite, Lavalette Commandery Knights Templar, No-Ruz Grotto, Sword of Bunker Hill, International Assoc. of
Shrine Yacht Clubs, member of the Royal Order of Jesters Court #102, Representative to the National Court of the ROJ, Liaison Officer for Jesters on Wheels, 34th Select Group, Evansville Past Masters Club, and is a Kentucky Colonel. He is a life
member of The Hadi Motor Corps, a member of The Hadi Oriental Band, the Hadi Legion of Honor, and the Hadi Car Club.
Phil lives in Newburgh with his wife, Charlotta who supports him in all he does. They have three children and four grand children. They are members of Zion United Church of Christ in Newburgh and believe in everything the Shrine stands for.
Charles “Rod” McDonald, Outer Guard
Charles “Rod” McDonald is a native of Evansville, IN. He graduated from Harrison High School in
1971. Immediately he went to work for ALCOA. In 1983 Rod joined forces with his father, Charlie
McDonald at Tri-State Painting. He continues to run and own the business with his brothers and his
mother.
Rod followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a Mason (Newburgh Lodge), joining the
Scottish Rite. He became a Noble of the Hadi Shriners in 1974. Rod first became a member of the
Drum & Bugle Corps upon joining Hadi as a trumpet player. He later found his love of making children smile by becoming a clown with the Warrick County Klowns. He is now a very active member
of the Hadi Funsters and has served as Treasurer for many years. Rod has been a long-time member
of the Hadi Bowling League where he spent many memorable Thursday nights with his dad. This is
also the league where he bowled four 300 pin games.
Rod is proud of his strong Masonic family involvement that started with his father and now continues to the next generations. His son-in-law, Randy Eades, is a very active member of the Hadi Oriental Band. His daughter,
Penny Eades, is currently serving as Queen of Isis Temple No. 41 Daughters of the Nile. He eagerly awaits the day when he
can welcome his grandson, Blake, into the Masons and assist him in becoming a Noble of the Hadi Shriners.

As per Hadi Shrine by-laws, (Article IV Section 4.6 (c)) Hadi’s Board of Directors, is

Paul Boling, Recorder
Phil Smith, Potentate
Nobles,
I became a member of the Hadi Shriners in the fall of 1967 after
going through the Blue Lodge at Richland City and the Evansville
Scottish Rite. Having just been released from the US Army, I wanted to
join the Color Guard, but was informed that I was too short. At that
time you had to be at least six feet tall in your stocking feet. I went
home with my tail between my legs and didn't join anything for 35
years. In 2003 I was asked to join the Legion of Honor, which I did,
and became Commander in 2006. In 2007 I ran for the Great Lakes line and became
2nd Lt. Commander in 2008 and Commander in 2010. At my exiting speech I said that
I was now retired and I had no more mountains to climb. I heard Roger was going to
retire, so I threw my hat into the ring for recorder and here I am climbing again.
As for my personal life, I’ve been married to my young bride Jeannie (don’t call
her Phyllis) for 44 years. We have two children, John Paul is 41 years old and was a
Shriners child at the St. Louis Hospital until he was 21. John had his leg amputated
when he was 11 years old and now works at Toyota.
Andrea is 35 years old and is slightly mentally challenged. She volunteers at the
early childhood development in the school cooperation, which is like a preschool for
children with learning disabilities.
Jeannie, Andrea and I live on three acres on the corner of her dad’s family farm
just east of Boonville and our son John built his house on the same farm.
With the help of the three young ladies in the office as well as all of you Nobles,
we will make this year a good one for Illustrious Sir Phil Smith, our new Potentate.
“I will serve to live with love and care, upon the level and by the square.”

DIVAN NEWS
2011 Membership Recognition
Happy St. Valentines Day to all. Nobles, it's
time to Sell those Sweet Vidalia Onions again!
Details on prices and commissions were explained at the onion kick-off on Ground-Hog
day. Last year we sold 7,200 bags of onions.
When you gentlemen were asked to increase
your sells last year you all did a great job. Up to
2 weeks after the onions arrived and you delivered them to your customers, folks were looking around and
asking "Hey, do you know if anyone has any more onions, I
need more onions." So this tells me we could have ordered more
and sold them. These onions are the 2nd largest fundraiser for
the Temple and most UCO's. There will be flyers available for
you to post in convenient spots. Don't forget, your friends and
family can sell onions as well. In fact, I heard a great onion story
in January, from Noble Mark Schiele, who said he still has a bag
of good onions left. On January 9th, the wife and I had 1 of our
onions and it was still a good onion. We still have 2 left from
our 20 pounds. We wrap our onions in newspaper, aluminum
foil, then place them in our crisper. Others have different methods that work for them. So, push the onion sells and make this
another record year. Any questions, contact your onion chairman, (myself) at 812-568-0773 or the co-chairman, Dan Schuler
at 812-453-1389.
Fraternally Yours,
Mike
The Hadi Membership Committee would like to recognize two
outstanding Hadi Nobles for their efforts this past year in promoting membership. The top membership point producer this

Noble Rex will receive a get a way at New Harmony Inn and
dinner for 2 along with his dues paid for 2012. The runner up is
Divan Member Tony May with 70 points earned during 2011.
Tony will receive his 2012 dues paid.

With 2011 in the books, the Directors Staff is
looking forward to the new year under the direction of Illustrious Sir Phil Smith. We would like
to congratulate him and Lady Charlotta and wish
them the best of luck. I would like to give a big “tip of the fez”
to the entire Directors Staff for making last year such a success. I
couldn’t be more proud of you guys and the things we accomplished. GREAT JOB! I’m sure the coming year will be as exciting and the club is moving in the right direction. Our officers for
2012 are:
Kevin Hazelwood, President
Mark Shaw, Vice President
Scott Young, Treasurer
Shawn Thacker, Secretary
Robin Marshall, Director
It’s great to see these guys step up and take charge. We have had
several new members join our club and it’s nice to see the new
faces in the crowd mixed with old friends. Our newest member,
Daniel Aubuchon, when asked how he could help to best benefit
the Directors Staff he replied “I’m good on mike.” I’m not sure
what that means but we found him a seat next to Taylor!! We’ll
have to wait until ceremonial to find out. We are currently working on some new stunts for this spring and we have a few surprises for the new Nobles.
That’s all for now! See you next time and don’t forget those 5
magic words…...PROUD TO BE A SHRINER!
Please help us to recognize these two top membership producing Nobles the next time your
paths cross! A Tip of the Fez to them both!
MEMBERSHIP
Robin A. Marshall
Greetings hard working Nobles. I know this year has just started
and the last thing you are probably thinking about is membership.
It’s a very important subject and is vital to the livelihood of our
temple. It seems that only a few people take an active roll on this
subject and many of you think that it does not directly affect you.
Sure, you hear the numbers given and you may even notice them
declining over the past few years, but you still don’t think it concerns YOU. Granted there is nothing we can do about the black
camel but that’s not where we are losing members. Our creation
numbers are on a downward slide as well. I know it’s hard to grasp
but now is the time to step up and be part of the solution. That
means reaching out to a noble that you were friends with that you
haven’t seen around in a while or even a guy you got ten points for
top line signing that you don’t really talk to or see. You never stop
being an influence or a mentor. We are a brotherhood and it’s time
to start acting like it. This is also the time to bring in a new noble
that has been your friend and has been asking “how do I become a
Shriner?” Create a legacy with a son, father or your brother. These
are the times they will never forget and memories that will last a
lifetime. So even if that doesn't get you motivated, think about this,
the next time you are at your unit, club or organization you may
look around and think we’re doing ok. Our membership is fine and
we had a pretty good year. You know as well as I do there are 10%
that always do the work and you could always use a few more dollars. Can you name one problem your UCO is having that couldn’t
be solved by membership? A few more members, a few more dollars, not to mention the energy and willingness to get involved that
you get with new nobles. So no matter what the reasons are, it’s
time to get up, time to get active and be a positive force within the
HADI Shriners. Everyone is responsible for membership. I would
like to offer this challenge to all nobles, bring in one new member
over the next three years. Membership is a serious subject and vital
to our Shrine. Keep up all of your good work nobles and please
don’t forget why we joined this organization and most importantly
what it stands for. PROUD TO BE A SHRINER!

Hadi Legion of
Honor Notes
By Jack Benjamin
Happy New Year! Following is the list of our 2012 Officers:
Greetings from Hadi Legion of Honor. Would you believe that we are in
the middle of the winter season already?
As we enter into the month of February, there are some important things to remember. First of all, we have Ground Hog
Day, and we all know that if that pig sees his shadow, we can
expect six more weeks of bad weather.
Next is Valentine’s Day, and Nobles, if you forget about Valentine’s Day, there just might be six uncomfortable weeks in
your home regardless of what the Ground Hog may say about
the weather. So, you may want to start to plan now on how
you may want to treat your Lady on this special day.
By Now, all the end of the year and beginning of the year
holidays are over, so now it is back to the real world and putting ones nose to the grindstone. At Hadi Legion of Honor,
our newly elected Commander has compiled a calendar of
events for the entire year. There will no doubt need to be
some updates and changes to make as we progress into the
year, but it is a very good way to remind oneself what is coming up in the future.
We welcome all Shrine veterans to join our unit. We meet the
4th Monday at Hadi Shrine Center, eat at 6:30 P. M., and then
meet in our designated meeting room on the third floor at 7:30
P. M. It is an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor.
HADI HIGHLANDERS
Bill Standring, P.P.
Greetings from a bunch of swell guys, the Pipes and Drums
O’Hadi…..where you are invited to join us for a wee dram and
take a look at becoming a Highlander.
The Officers for 2012 are:
Randy Kissell, President
Rick Kennedy, Vice President
Ron Millikam, Secretary
Bill Standring, P.P., Treasurer
Mark Standring, Pipe Major
David Wires, Pipe Sergeant
2011 was a splendid year for the Highlanders that saw a
very successful Tartan Ball and the addition of four new Pipers
for a total of eight Pipers in the Fall Festival Parade. Wow! Our
young pipers have recruited two young soon-to-be Nobles. A
piper and a very fine side (snare) drummer.
We are learning new Irish tunes for our annual St. Patrick’s
Pub Crawl. We have just outfitted a new Ruffian and he’s ready
to strut. Our room is a bit small. We are
spilling out into the halls, but we are not
complaining because for fifteen years we
didn’t have a practice room.
Yes, we love the Scottish influence in a
Shrine environment.

These men are dedicated to the Hospital Staff and it’s
work. The following is an example of the reason.
A patient gave the following note to his drivers. “Thanks
for taking us up to the hospital. It was very helpful. Thanks for
your help! Your Friend, Carson.”
And a note from his mother , “I hope this small gift (DVDs for
the vans) keeps on giving like you all do for us and the community”. Nobles, that is what it is all about!

DRUM CORPS BLASTS
By Jerry Minto
Greetings from the members of the Hadi Drum & Bugle
Corps. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and are ready
to work hard to make 2012 a memorable year for the D&B.
Charlie Engelhardt and his officers are now installed and
involved in the planning for the coming year. Charlie will do a
fine job of upholding the tradition of great leadership that had
been a trademark of this unit.
We had a great Christmas Party in December with a large
crowd in attendance. Jim Scheller was chosen to receive the
“2011 Achievement Award”. This was well deserved and we
congratulate Jim.
Since this is the beginning of a new year our Treasurer,
Brian Lucas, would sure like to hear from you. Yes, that means
dues for 2012 are now due. Let’s make every effort to take care
of this in a timely fashion.
Let’s all make an all out effort to keep our eyes open for
potential members to join us. Inform them that they do not have
to have any musical ability, just the desire to have a good time
and be around a great group of guys.
Thanks to Illustrious Sir Paul Egbert for a great job during
the past year and congratulations to our new Potentate Phil
Smith. The D&B will make every effort to back you in any way
we can.
The D&B needs your help at the Super Bowl Party on February 5th. Come down for a great time, good food and outstanding fellowship.
Please take notice of all the activities going on at the Temple. These are all listed in the “Hot Sands” and let’s make every
effort to support as many as possible.
Our stated meeting will be held on February 10th. Please
make every effort to attend.
In closing I hope the New Year will bring each and everyone good health, happiness and peace throughout the world.
Hope to do this again next month and bring you’re the past
and future happenings of your Hadi Drum & Bugle Corps.

By Dale Thomas, Secretary
Hello all and welcome to the first news of 2012. By now we
have one meeting under our belt and hopefully we have your
input on the best course for our unit in 2012. That’s right! Your
officers need your input to help this unit continue the success it
has enjoyed over the past years. We need your ideas, energy,
your commitment to bringing in new members and doing what
we do best…..PARADE! Remember, it doesn’t matter what you
drive. Clean it up, shine it up and when the parades start, wear
that Fez and shirt with pride. Lets have some fun!!
Over the next month we hope to have a new email address
you can use to reach officers and we are looking into starting a
Facebook page for the Motor Corps.
As always, we meet each month on the fourth (4th) Friday
of the month at 7:30pm. The meetings are your chance to have
input into our charted course in 2012. Come early to enjoy the
fellowship in brotherhood.

HADI ORIENTAL BAND
WEIRD NOTES
Greetings to all ye worthy Nobles of the Hot Sands of Hadi
Temples Oriental Band. We hope everyone had a wonderful
Holiday and New Year as we now look forward to an exciting
year.
Our best wishes to Ill. Sir Phil Smith and his Lady Charlotta for a most rewarding year, as I’m sure that Ill. Sir Phil has
planned some exciting and interesting things for the Nobility
during his tenure as Potentate. The members of Hadi Oriental
Band will do our up most to see that Ill. Sir Phil has a successful
year and along with the support of the Divan and Nobility, I’m
quite sure he’ll accomplish his goals.
Guys, thanks to all the members who performed at the installation of officers for the Hadi Shriners. It was very much
appreciated.
The Bands first business meeting of the year was well attended as Committee Chairmen, Band events and their dates
were discussed for the year. The officers of the OB have put
together a fine slate of events for the membership to enjoy plus
there is more to come. We would also like to welcome Nobles
Will Brenner, Howard Whitsel and John Scheller on joining the
OB.
Nobles, the Band is looking forward to putting together
some more events and activities like the Iceman outing. We all
got together for a fun filled evening with family and friends. We
are looking ahead to the Super Bowl Party and Valentine’s Dinner/Dance at Hadi Temple this month so make plans to attend.
Hey Tribesman, do you realize it’s that time of year again
and that means your dues are due. We’d appreciate it if you
would please take the time and pay them in a timely fashion so I
can get our rosters updated. Thank you!
Dates to note: Feb. 2nd Onion Kickoff, 5th Super Bowl
Party, 11th Valentines Dinner/Dance, March 3rd Wild Game
Feast, Apr. 15th OB Breakfast at the Temple and 24th Hadi
Stated Meeting. These are just a few. Watch your HS for more
Shrine activities. Also, guys, I will be mailing out to all of our
dues paying members a list of your Bands planned events for
the year. Remember your HS comes out once a month. I turn
the article in a month in advance, so if you need something put
in our article just let me know before the first of the previous
month.
Our prayers and thoughts to all Nobles and loved ones with
health problems. Pray they receive blessings of renewed
strength.
Remember guys; business meetings are the second Tuesday
of every month, with practices the other Tuesdays starting at
7pm. Nobles, don’t be just a card carrier. Commit to a unit or
club, get active and get involved. Remember why you joined
and if your looking for a unit stop by the Oasis of Hadi Temple’s Oriental Band, as the OB is the place to be!
Remember your Blue Lodge; this is where is all began.
Salaam for now; don’t forget the Ladder of Smiles.

MARINER WAVES
February 2012
By: Darren Foster, Treasurer
Greetings Nobles:
I would like to remind all that the river camp is closed for business during the months of February, March and November. Meetings
for those months will be held in the Temple on the 3 rd floor. All other meetings are at the River Camp and no meeting in December.
Next meeting is Feb. 15th. As usual Food is available at all meetings and small donations accepted. I encourage all you great Mariners to be a part of our monthly meetings and get involved, especially new members! Learn by doing. Keeping active will continue
to make this year ‘’FUN’’ and successful for the Mariners!. Our mission is to proudly display “Having Fun, Helping Kids!” and we
do this well each time we parade as a unit onboard the S.S. Mariner. The Mariners always welcome any new or current Hadi Noble
to join our great unit and jump on the boat.
Throughout the year I would like to introduce some Protocol and bits of nautical info. For example, taken directly from the Shriners
International Protocol:
1. Non-Shriners. Other than the police escort, dignitaries, distinguished guests and Shriners Hospitals for Children patients,
only Shriners are permitted in Shrine parades.
“Do you know the origin of mind your P’s and Q’s”?
In the days of sail when Sailors were paid a pittance, sailors drank their ale in taverns whose keepers were willing to extend
credit until payday. Since many salts were illiterate, keepers kept a tally of pints and quarts consumed by each Sailor on a
chalkboard behind the bar. Next to each person's name, a mark was made under "P" for pint or "Q" for quart whenever a
sailor ordered another draught.
On payday, each sailor was liable for each mark next to his name, so he was forced to "mind his P's and Q's" or he would
get into financial trouble. To ensure an accurate count by unscrupulous keepers, Sailors had to keep their wits and
remain somewhat sober. Sobriety usually ensured good behavior, hence the meaning of "mind your P's and Q's."
“Don’t Miss the Boat”!!!

PATROL POINTS
Rick Ennis-Secretary 2012
Email: [email protected]
I’d like to start with a BIG “Tip of the Fez” from the Arab Patrol to the Illustrious Past Potentate Paul Egbert on his 2011 year.
We would like to congratulate him on all of his accomplishments last year. There was a lot of hard work and fun had by all. Again,
thank you Illustrious Sir Paul Egbert and Lady Karen.
Now on to 2012!! The Arab Patrol congratulates Illustrious Potentate Phil Smith and Lady Charlotta. We will be there when
needed and called upon. We welcome any new challenges or tasks asked of the Patrol. We would also like to say “Way to Go” to
Steve Barnett for becoming the Hadi Shriners new Parade Marshal for this year. You helped lead the Patrol, now you get to place
us. Be Gentle. Also, congratulations to Rod McDonald on being appointed to the Outer Guard, we know you will do a great job.
Last but not least, congratulations to Paul Boling on become the new Recorder for Hadi Temple.
January’s meeting was great….there were almost 40 Nobles present and a lot of fun was had that evening. The Patrol thanks
Russell Redmon for being our Uniformed Bodies Representative for 2012. We would like to welcome our newest member, Gene
Brooks Jr., we know he will be a great asset to our unit. You don’t have to “jingle” anymore….just stay in step and everything will
be ok.
We would also like to thank the Nobles who participated in the Leadership Seminar on January 21st. It is because of you guys
taking such an interest in the Patrol that our unit continues to grow. If you know of a Patrol member who has not been to a meeting
in a while, please contact them and let them know what they are missing out on.
As we all know, the Patrolmen like having fun, so don’t miss out on our breakfast February 25th. Cooking starts at 6am, breakfast will be served around 8am. Any Nobles that would like to come down for breakfast that morning is welcome. The more the
merrier!! Please call Cassie at the Hadi Office to make reservations so we know how much food to prepare.
Here are some dates to remember: February 2nd - Onion Kickoff. February 5th – Super Bowl Party. If there are any bowlers
out there among the Hadi Shriners, the Scotch Doubles will be held March 25th at 1pm at River City Recreation. See or call Tom
Land to make your reservations.
It was great to see all of those green jackets on Installation night. I am sure the Illustrious Potentate Phil Smith appreciated it.
By seeing that many Nobles, he knows that the Patrol will stand behind him.
In closing, take a moment to remember those last three important points in our Shriners Creed:
As Individuals we pledge ourselves to integrity, virtue and nobility of character. Our intentions will be honorable, our
relations will be trustworthy and our spirits forgiving of each other.
As brothers we offer each other fraternal affection and respect. Together we will support each other in adherence to this
creed, so that we and our communities will be better because of our fraternity and it’s principals.
As Shriners we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. We
believe Shriners Hospitals to be the world’s greatest philanthropy and we covenant with each other to support it’s “temples
of mercy” with spirit, time, talent and means.
Commit to be active in your unit for 2012!!

Car Club News
Thanks to all Car Club members for your many appearances at Spring and Fall ceremonials and parades this past year of 2011. We
had a very active year. We really do need some “NEW” members, with cars, this coming year of 2012. Car Club dues are only $15
annually. Our constitution allows us to have members with “interest in cars” to be drivers of other member’s cars in parades. The
Car Club meets the first Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at Hadi. Hope to see you, you, and you this first Monday of February.
In the faith,
Joe C. Wyatt, President

These bricks will be used to build a patio around the flag pole in the courtyard of the
Hadi Temple. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to recognize and honor someone
for their many years of service to the Hadi Shriners.
To the left are just a few examples of what can be placed on the bricks. There is a full
display of the bricks available in the lobby of Hadi Temple.
