Dear friends and supporters,
The Guidance Center was created 58 years ago by a true collaborative effort that
blossomed from the imagination of local leaders who envisioned a community
agency responsive to the needs of children and adults. Their sensitivity to
community needs lives on today, both inside and outside our organization. People
are working together to support each other and are achieving solid results. This
has been very evident over the past year as TGC successfully has met challenges
to enhance the communities we serve.
Our dedicated team of professionals is planning for the future by envisioning new
ways to help children and families. We launched a program called the Children’s
Behavioral Action Team this past year, which works in tandem with staff at the
Hawthorn Center and with local Community Mental Health Service Providers to
better serve children with severe emotional disturbances from around Michigan.
The agency has expanded its capacity to serve children in the juvenile justice
system by expanding to a second Multi-Systemic Therapy team serving all of Wayne
County. We are partnering with foster care providers to better serve children who
are impacted by family instability. And we are shifting and enhancing our Early
Childhood Program to add more intervention for children from ages birth to two.
Our Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center was strengthened this past year by
raising funds to purchase two buildings in Midtown Detroit to create a permanent
home for the program. The Kids-TALK CAC provides forensic interviews at both
our Midtown Detroit and Southgate locations, and medical evaluations for both
sexual and physical abuse in our renovated 1900 carriage house in Detroit. We
are grateful for the generous support of many donors and foundations that have
rallied to support this critically important program that each year serves 1,600
children who have suffered from unspeakable abuse. We intend and look forward
to growing our ability to serve at-risk children in Wayne County.
Working to provide services to nearly 23,000 in Wayne County is a tremendous
responsibility and honor. We appreciate the role that our collaborative partners,
donors, supporters and employees play to help The Guidance Center strengthen
families and change lives.
Many thanks,
Kari D. Walker
President & CEO
Thank you to the following individuals, corporations
and businesses, foundations, organizations, churches,

to generously support The Guidance Center each year.
Your partnership with our agency helped to touch the
lives of nearly 23,000 people over the past year.
Contributions from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015

Downriver Dash 5K
The Fifth Annual Downriver Dash 5K Run/Walk and Tot Trot was
held in April 2015. More than 300 runners and walkers joined us
at the Wayne County Community College - Downriver Campus to
run through Heritage Park in Taylor. Participants received bagels
and bananas, had the opportunity for free massages after the
race, and enjoyed the music of DJ throughout the morning. The
free Tot Trot for children 10 and under offered a 1/2 mile run,
face painting, games, and more.
Above: Participants in our Annual Downriver Dash 5K
Run/Walk in April take off from the starting line at Wayne
County Community College in Taylor.
Right: One of the proud runners in the children’s Tot Trot.
All Tot Trot participants received a finisher’s medal.
In October 2015 The Guidance Center hosted
its fifth annual Grape Expecations for Kids Wine
Pairing Dinner at the Colony Club Detroit. We
welcomed 270 guests to benefit our Kids-TALK
Children’s Advocacy Center and its work with
children who have been sexually or physically
abused or neglected.
Wine Pairing Dinner
Guidance Center CEO Kari Walker and KidsTALK Founder Nancy J. Diehl spoke about the
impact of the CAC and the current $2 million
fundraising campaign underway for the program
(which has locations in both Midtown Detroit and
Southgate). Special awards were presented to
Jamie Buchholz, Sgt. Patrick Boucher, and Lora
Weingarden for their dedication to children in
Wayne County served by the Kids-TALK CAC.
Santina Daly Bragadin, Angela Daly,
and Christina Daly Gruber.
Kari Walker addresses the dinner guests.
Robert J Diehl, Jr, Dr. George Diehl, Sharon Choate, Kids-TALK Founder
Nancy J. Diehl, Janice Diehl, Dan Bertrand, and Jerry Dorsey IV.
The Guidance Center held its 26th Anniversary
Golf Classic in June 2015 to support The Guidance
Center’s Developmental Disabilities Services and
the Budd Lynch Endowment Fund for Children. This
annual event was always near to the heart of our
dear friend Budd Lynch, and after his passing in 2012 we continued to hold this event
to benefit the children we serve here at the agency.
Despite the unpredictable weather, the golfers were still able to be out on the course
nearly all afternoon and joined us afterwards for hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and a silent
auction inside the banquet hall of the golf course.

In November 2015 the agency honored Tammy and Bruce Ranck at the annual National

Story Time
Our Community Resouce
Centers in Taylor, Romulus,
Belleville, Lincoln Park, and
River Rouge hosted literacy
events providing children the
opportunity to enjoy story time,
games, crafts, and a snack. At
the fall literacy events Curious
George himself was happy to
dance and play with children
and families at each event, and
all children received a free book
to take home!
Christmas Shop for Kids
Through the generosity of 13 Guidance
Center donors, 120 low-income children
went on a Christmas shopping spree
in December 2015 at the Southgate
Walmart. After a special breakfast, the
children were given a $100 gift card to
spend as they pleased throughout the
store. The children filled their carts with
goodies accompanied by their volunteer
shopping escort. Some of the generous
donors were able to shop with the
children they sponsored and see the joy
on their faces as they perused the store.

Happy birthday, Head Start!
October 14, 2015 was a monumental day at The Guidance Center as we marked the
50th anniversary of the Head Start preschool program! Celebrations were taking place
nationwide on this special day, and we honored our Head Start sites with a tree planting ceremony, a cake reception, and by viewing the national webcast.
The Guidance Center is proud to again be featured on the Crain’s Detroit Business
2016 List of Largest Nonprofits. Our dedicated team of professionals provides a
wide array of quality services to children, adults, and families throughout southeast
Michigan, and we are pleased to be a part of this distinguished list of organizations.
Back-to-School Salon Day
In August 2015 a group of girls from our Children & Youth program were treated to an
afternoon at Krave Salon, Inc. to get
ready to return to school. Generous
stylists from the salon donated
their time to give the girls haircuts,
styles, and manicures so they could
return to school feeling happy and
confident. The girls also enjoyed
face painting and temporary
tattoos, a pizza lunch, and a gift
bag with back-to-school items.
Thank you to all of the stylists at
Krave Salon for giving these girls
such a special treat and helping
start their school year off with a
bang!
