Dear Parents and Friends
Life Skills incursion
At the last School Council meeting there was some discussion about next term’s
Life Skills “Mindfulness in Action” incursion and how it has significant value on
improving the wellbeing of students. As a result of this discussion, School Council
made a decision to subsidise 50% of the cost to all families who wanted their child
to participate. This is a wonderful show of support from the members of School
Council.
A key reason why we wanted this program at our school is because kids are much
more likely to learn if they do so in a positive school environment that supports
them to have a healthy mind and body. Student Wellbeing is one of four
components in the school’s Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan and
this program is one of the strategies for improving this aspect. What we are trying
to do is teach kids how to be aware of their thoughts and feelings, know how to
respond rather than react, and give them the skills to be healthier in their mind and
body. This might sound a bit “new age”, but hopefully you agree with me that
children with good mental and physical health are much more likely to learn than
children who can’t regulate their thoughts and emotions, and don’t know what
being physically healthy means. This is the point of the Life Skills Group
“Mindfulness in Action” program.
Here are the intended benefits, as stated by the Life Skills Group:

Thank you to the KWR Men’s Shed and
students from KWR Secondary College for
designing and constructing our new
Friendship Seat.
As a result of the school council subsidy, families who have not yet paid but would like their child to attend
will be invited to participate at a cost of $21 per student. A new incursion form will be produced for these
students. For those families who have already paid for the incursion, I thank you for your support. The
additional money you have paid ($21) will be used as credit towards future school excursions or incursions.
There will also be an information session on Monday 18th July at 3:30pm for any interested parent.
We continue to work hard every day to improve the mental and physical health of all children at Bayles
Regional Primary School.
Grandparent’s Day
I thought that Grandparent’s Day was absolutely wonderful. It was so good seeing all the Grandparents and
special friends in our classrooms working alongside the kids, then listening to the fabulous choir and
enjoying a lovely morning tea. I can’t truly express how thankful I am for the generous support our parents
and community have for this school. There are so many people that helped make this day special and I say
“thank you” to you all.
Kind Regards
Mr Mat Anderton

ActiveNews
Wednesdays
Active Wednesdays occur every week to
encourage students to be active. All
participants go into the draw to win a scooter
and a helmet. Keep up the great work!
Free Dress Day
We will be holding a free dress day on the last
day of term. Please bring a gold coin donation
and wear free dress. All money raised will go to
the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Say No To Nutella !!
We understand that many
children like Nutella in their
lunchboxes, but this is a product
that we strongly discourage being
brought to school (in line with our
Anaphylaxis Policy).
There are a number of equally
yummy chocolate spreads that do
not have the danger of being lifethreatening, so it would be great
if one of these could
be used as a substitute
for Nutella.

We have had a busy start to the Music programme this semester. The choir has had a number of
opportunities to perform. The first performance at the Bayles Music Festival was a great success
where fourteen of our wonderful choir members sang a varied and colourful repertoire of songs.
The most recent performance, during Grandparents Day, showcased established and new songs
that show our choirs continuing growth.
In the Music classroom students have been trying to answer some big questions about what Music
is and what elements make up all Music. We have sung, played instruments and learnt games that
focus on the musical elements of beat and rhythm.
In junior levels, students have been learning a repertoire of songs and music games. They have
been developing the skills needed to feel the beat, imitate rhythms and write rhythms they hear.
They have been listening and responding to music by Gustav Holst and Camille Saint-Saens.
In year 3 to 6, students have been looking at rhythm and beat when constructing rap songs. They
have been working as a class and in groups to create their own works, including lyrics and
instrumentation, to be rehearsed and performed in class.

Spare clothing
Now that winter has arrived, it would be appreciated if students could have a change of
clothes in a plastic bag in their school bag. This is particularly important in the junior school
(but equally important for kids who like to play sport on the oval regardless of age!!). Although
we do try to give students a change of clothes when needed, we don’t always have the right
size or item. Spare socks/underwear are especially useful to pack as we don’t have any of
these in our supply for obvious reasons!! If your child does happen to need a change of
clothes, please return them ASAP (after laundering!) so they will be available for others.
Unexplained absence letters
Many families will have received an unexplained absence letter today - this means there is an absence on our system
that we don’t have a written explanation for. It would be appreciated if this letter could be filled in with an explanation f or
the absence, signed and returned as a matter of urgency. It is department policy that all absences have an explanatory
written note from a parent/guardian, and something that our school is required to follow up. It is useful to let us know
when your child will be away, however a verbal absence will still be recorded as unexplained until the written
explanation is sent to the school - this can be done via tiqbiz, email or a handwritten note. To avoid receiving an
unexplained letter in the future, please make sure that you send us written explanations whenever your child is away.
Lost Property
There are currently a number of items in lost property that are un-named - these are sent to the Koo Wee Rup Op Shop
at the end of each term if they haven't been claimed. Please try to make sure that everything that comes to school is
named and we will do our best to get it back to your child. There are also families who are missing uniform items that
have been named - please check at home to make sure your child hasn’t taken it home by mistake, and return it if they
have. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter and remember; if you name every item that comes to school there
is a greater chance of it being returned if lost.
Any phone calls to the school outside of these hours will be taken by the office answering machine and
responded to during office hours.
Wednesday Hot Chocolate
with a marshmallow will be
available this Wednesday 8th
June at the beginning of
lunch time.

Fun ideas for children and families
Any physical activity, not just structured classes, is beneficial to health and wellbeing.
Some fun activities for the family that don’t feel like exercise include:
 flying a kite in the park or at the beach
 dancing to your favourite music
 riding bicycles along the river or using bike paths
 playing a family game of table tennis
 swimming and splashing about at the local pool
 walking the dog
 throwing a frisbee
 rollerskating, rollerblading or skateboarding (insist that everyone wears appropriate safety equipment)
 jumping on a trampoline
More ideas can be found at www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au
