Many People. A Strong Voice. As I look back over the past 40 years since the first publication of Aerobics, I am truly amazed at the scientific legacy The Cooper Institute has built. It is because of this heritage that The Institute is a welcome partner at tables, both new and old, and has a strong voice in public policy. During the past year, I worked hard to ensure the passage of Texas Senate Bill 530, requiring 30 minutes of daily activity for students in grades K-5 and, starting next fall, four out of six semesters for students in grades 6-8 with adjustable time options. Also SB530 mandates annual fitness assessments beginning this year for Texas students in grades 3-12. I am proud to announce The Institute’s own FITNESSGRAM was selected through a competitive bid process as the fitness assessment software tool. The passage of Senate Bill 530 was a remarkable accomplishment for the children of Texas and one that will forever change the force of physical activity in our schools. It signals an important commitment to improving the health of our children, which will help jumpstart a decrease in the alarming obesity problem. Our voice was heard in crafting this Texas policy as our voice was sought by national leadership in the selection process of the two most recent Surgeons General. And national security organizations continue to seek out The Institute for their leadership in fitness training. Because of The Cooper Institute’s scientific and education credibility our voice now has an even stronger effect on policy at a national level. Our Mission Advancing the understanding between living habits and health I want to personally thank all the leaders and staff of The Cooper Institute over the years for believing in the mission and working to make the world a healthier place. Thirty-seven years of work from dedicated employees, supporters, and Board members have created our strong public voice. As we move forward to half a century of work, The Cooper Institute remains uniquely positioned to change lives. From research, through education and into our communities, The Cooper Institute continues to change lives for the better. On the next few pages you will read how The Institute impacts lives with its work and voice facilitating lasting change for the better. Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H. And changing lives is what The Cooper Institute (CI) does best. This year we experienced a number of firsts as a respected change leader: “ • Two pharmaceutical trials were funded to study the effects of drugs on weight loss and prediabetes prevention. Recruiting for a number of clinical studies is underway to aid in the treatment and management of diabetes. • Women’s Exercise Injuries: Incidence and Risk Factors (WIN), a 5-year $3.25 million study funded by the National Institutes of Health (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases), will recruit almost 900 women for an observational study of activity-related injuries. • We redesigned our web site which allows us to highlight features with a display banner. We added a Shopping Cart for online donations and purchases. Visit www.cooperinstitutue.org to see the changes. • We opened a retail space outside Bohannon Hall called The Cooper Institute Bookstore. Our store sells a number of mission-related items and educational publications. This store makes it easier for the 2000+ Dallas students to carry our mission home with them. I came into this program as an avenue to lose weight. I felt fine, but my main motivation was to lose weight. I like the physical activity component most, I think. I work with a Special Ed population and I would be so tired when I would come to the study center. I had to tell myself, I’m committed; I’m going to do this. Afterward my energy levels would always be higher. Last summer I walked everyday, and currently I walk 2-3 days a week for one hour. I like to walk for an hour, take my tapes, and enjoy the scenery and people in the park. I’m also more conscious of my diet now; especially on Sundays after church, when my family and I go out to brunch. I order off the menu to avoid overeating from the buffet selection. I always make sure I have breakfast. My participation in this research study motivated me to take better care of myself and to want to feel better. I tell people to join studies, and stick with it even if you falter, because the end results are worth the time. In a few words, it’s been life changing for me. Oak Cliff has had a positive impact on the community. It’s accessible to bus lines, and allows The Cooper Institute (CI) to reach more people. I don’t know if I would have driven to North Dallas. Mary Kennedy Green CI Oak Cliff Study Participant School Teacher ” • Four new educational courses were added to our current offerings bringing our total to 20 health and fitness courses in Dallas or At Your Site. • Our Fire Service Fitness Specialist course was well received by the Dallas Fire Department and promises a new opportunity for CI. • In December our Personal Training Certification Exam received national accreditation from the National Commission for Certifying Agencies–the gold standard in the industry. Event co-partnered by The Cooper Institute, Northwood Women’s Foundation and Centex Corporation. • The Cooper Institute 2007 Annual Report 800.635.7050 “ I have always felt very fortunate to have met Dr. Cooper early on in my football career. I then became familiar with the research that was going on at The Cooper Institute, and how it just proved, whether you are an athlete or not, the tremendous value of a regimen of even moderate daily physical activity. We have gone from science-based evidence showing the value of physical activity and good nutrition in enhancing quality of life, to its impact on disease prevention and longevity. At first blush, it seems like common sense, but too frequently, common sense today is detoured by misinformation and environmental influences that prevent us from doing what we should for the best long-term benefits. Dr. Cooper was a “voice in the wilderness” for many years, and now look at how many professionals are proponents of his road map to healthy living! ” Roger Staubach The Cooper Institute Board of Trustees Chairman, The Staubach Company “ The Cooper Institute has been a great resource for the latest research in the areas of physical activity and fitness and their relation to disease. I have collaborated with The Institute on research studies over the years. The ACLS (Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study) is unparalleled in its importance with more than 90,000 patients having comprehensive preventive medicine exams including fitness measures. As chair of the Scientific Advisory Board, I hope I have had a small part in shaping some of the previous and ongoing research. The Institute is recognized as one of the top research and educational institutions worldwide in the areas of physical activity, physical fitness, and health. Over the past few years The Institute has expanded its scope to provide research and education programs that are more comprehensive from a preventive medicine perspective. The Oak Cliff location of The Institute provides access to diverse populations for innovative research designed to improve health and fitness. On campus access to cutting edge technology and experienced, scientific researchers and physicians provide The Institute with a powerful means to continue the advancement of knowledge in preventive medicine for longer, healthier lives of people around the globe. ” Bill Haskell, Ph.D. CI Scientific Advisory Board Chair Emeritus (Active) Professor Stanford University School of Medicine 800.635.7050 www.cooperinstitute.org • Testimonials I’ve been impressed with the great work of The Institute for a number of years, but it was always of concern to me that the community that needed it the most did not have direct access to this great operation. Well, you can imagine how excited I was when I learned that The Institute was opening a branch in the southern sector of Dallas, the very community in which I strive to make a difference daily. For too long Dr. Cooper and The Cooper Institute have been voices screaming into the darkness. I feel that it is my responsibility as a parent, physician, and citizen to do everything I can to help to bring this message to those who need it most. I am keenly aware that it will take all of us to turn the health of our nation around. Fitness is an important component of well being. My initial visit to The Institute as a student was a high point if not the pinnacle in the revival of my pursuit of wellness. The Cooper Institute is important because it provides a validation of lifestyle attributes that many have benefited from for years. I frequently call upon information that I learned at The Institute to help further advance the well being of people that I work with as well as my own. The courses I have attended have helped me immensely in terms of evaluating fitness goals and implementing programs to help reach those goals. The Cooper Institute has made a strong impression on me in terms of the impact of one’s diet. I’ve learned a great deal about how the body functions and how it responds to exercise protocols, diets and rest. I love the boot camp/fitness atmosphere while here, which comes close to perfection, and you try to take it home with you. I pay my own expense for courses and travel so it’s very important that I am getting value along with quality. After my first visit, I saw the value. The instructors’ ability to convey information is second to none. I have an amazing foundation from The Cooper Institute. Joe Jackson, CI-CPT CI Student and Certified Personal Trainer Police Officer and Fitness Instructor – NY Area Jill Waggoner, M.D. CI Development Advisory Board Member Oak Cliff Resident and Physician The Cooper Institute maintains the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS), which is an invaluable resource for the scientific community investigating the importance of physical activity on health. Many of the current recommendations for physical activity were developed by CI investigators with the use of this data base and the combination of comprehensive medical evaluation with direct measurement of physical fitness. ACLS is absolutely unique and must be preserved. Ben Levine, M.D. CI Collaborating Scientist Professor of Medicine University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center • The Cooper Institute 2007 Annual Report 800.635.7050 FITNESSGRAM Continues to Win Schools Over! The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) honored the New York City Department of Public Education with the Ross Merrick National Recognition Award for the Office of Fitness and Physical Education’s exemplary efforts to improve the physical education program and health of New York City’s 1.1 million school children. NYC has implemented a web-based version of FITNESSGRAM in more than 700 schools. The Cooper Institute has not only been a leader in the development of fitness assessment, but has produced scientifically based reports regarding childhood obesity. The leadership of Dr. Cooper has set the pace for policy change in the United States on relevant and timely health issues. Because of The Cooper Institute, I have changed the way physical education in Miami is delivered by implementing FITNESSGRAM and related educational programs. Jayne Greenberg, Ph.D. FITNESSGRAM Customer District Director, Miami-Dade County Public Schools The Miami-Dade County Public School District (M-DCPS) took an aggressive step in battling childhood obesity and other health risks by implementing the acclaimed FITNESSGRAM assessments in all M-DCPS schools this semester. The initiative (funded entirely by outside grants) gives students and parents an objective personal fitness snapshot, as well as suggestions to maintain good health. “These assessments and reports could have significant impact on our children’s lives,” says Dr. Jayne Greenberg, District Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy. “We’re not just targeting obesity. We want all children to learn how to assess their own fitness and develop physical activity habits for a lifetime of health.” Last year in Delaware, House Bill 372 was passed requiring each school district and charter school to assess the physical condition of each student at least once in grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 with results to be provided to parents, guardians, or relative caregivers. Delaware House Bill 471 created a pilot program to determine the best practices and assessment that could be implemented in schools statewide for physical education/physical activity. FITNESSGRAM was chosen by the Department of Education as the assessment tool for determining the physical fitness of each student. FITNESSGRAM, created by educators at The Cooper Institute, was first used in schools in 1982. To learn more about FITNESSGRAM, visit www.fitnessgram.net. Students at Arapaho Classical Magnet School, Richardson I.S.D. The school has used FITNESSGRAM for 25 years. 800.635.7050 www.cooperinstitute.org • Statement of Financial Position June 30, 2007 Comparative Totals at June 30, 2006 Assets Current assets: Cash and cash equivalents $246,270 Investments 14,164,649 Accounts receivable 402,964 Prepaids and deposits 103,838 Total current assets 14,917,721 $208,870 13,686,798 943,113 141,512 14,980,293 Property and equipment: Land 1,909,350 Building and improvements 5,395,087 Computer equipment 949,282 Laboratory equipment 239,155 Office equipment 778,527 9,271,401 Less accumulated depreciation (3,885,287) 5,386,114 1,909,350 5,380,032 844,023 222,325 763,927 9,119,657 (3,611,177) 5,508,480 Total assets $20,303,835 LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS Current liabilities: Accounts payable and accrued liabilities $393,359 Deferred contract revenue 193,524 Seminar deposits 105,827 Total current liabilities 692,710 $20,488,773 $708,966 368,287 94,718 1,171,971 Commitments and contingencies Net assets Unrestricted – unappropriated 5,785,508 Unrestricted – board appropriated 6,826,419 Temporarily restricted 1,861,044 Permanently restricted 5,138,154 Total net assets 19,611,125 Total liabilities and net assets $20,303,835 5,832,476 6,883,581 2,094,591 4,506,154 19,316,802 $20,488,773 Net Assets & Permanent Endowment Fund – Five-Year Trend Millions $20.0 19.3 16.4 $15.0 19.6 17.3 Total Net Assets Permanent Endowment Fund 14.7 $10.0 $5.0 $0.0 • The Cooper Institute 2007 Annual Report FY2003 FY2004 FY2005 FY2006 FY2007 800.635.7050 Statement of Activities Year ended June 30, 2007 Comparative Totals for the Year ended June 30, 2006 Support and revenue: Contributions and grants, net $2,668,490 Epidemiology and clinical applications 798,938 Computer services and youth fitness 249,780 Continuing education and certification 2,506,735 Tenant 228,807 Total support and revenue 6,452,750 Expenses: Salaries, wages, and benefits 5,200,404 Facilities rental and maintenance 573,817 Depreciation 359,297 General and administrative 2,303,262 Total expenses 8,436,780 Increase (decrease) in net assets from continuing operations (1,984,030) Nonoperating activities: Net realized and unrealized gains on investments 1,420,134 Interest and investment income, net 561,800 Increase in net assets from nonoperating activities 1,981,934 Increase (decrease) in net assets before discontinued operations (2,096) Increase in net assets from discontinued operations – Denver office, net 296,419 Increase in net assets 294,323 Net assets at beginning of year 19,316,802 Net assets at end of year $19,611,125 Functional Expense Mix – Year Ended June 30, 2007 (Unaudited) 4.5% 21.5% $5,246,953 731,911 327,189 2,695,614 210,163 9,211,830 5,549,200 604,905 389,572 1,952,269 8,495,946 715,884 805,822 399,345 1,205,167 1,921,051 71,546 1,992,597 17,324,205 $19,316,802 Support & Revenue Mix – Three-Year Trend 10.10% 7.90% 22.80% 29.30% 74.0% 12.40% 38.80% 62.40% 57.00% 41.40% Program Services Administrative Fundraising FY2005 FY2006 Contributions/Grants Epidemiology Research Tenant FY2007 Education/Certification Youth Fitness Ernst & Young LLP performed the 2006-2007 audit for The Cooper Institute.
