ANNUAL REPORT 2015 MO M E N TS O F C H AN G E N E WA R K D E V E L O P M E N T PA R T N E R S FROM THE CHAIRMAN To The Newark Community, This first annual report of Newark Development Partners Community Improvement Corporation (NDP) is, in fact, a summary of NDP since inception in late 2012 through December 31, 2015. NDP’s agenda includes working closely with both public and private sectors to make Newark, Ohio a better place to live, work, worship, shop and raise our families. In short order, NDP has proved to be a timely and valuable community organization that fosters meaningful collaboration and encourages the use of the best resources available in our community. This report provides a window into the progress made in a few short years. Closely coordinating efforts of our Executive Director Fred Ernest and board members of NDP, we strongly believe that working in concert with public and private sectors within Newark has resulted in far more accomplishments than any single entity may have experienced on its own. We look forward to the coming years, filled with promise and exciting developments. We are grateful for the community support received to date. And we especially express our thanks to the City of Newark Administration, Newark City Council and the Licking County Chamber of Commerce for their leadership and foresight in helping to establish NDP. ABOUT US In early 2012, Newark Development Partners CIC was established as a nonprofit Ohio corporation. NDP is a partnership between the City of Newark, Ohio and the Licking County Chamber of Commerce. The articles of incorporation, dated April 23, 2012, stated the purposes of the CIC are “to advance, encourage, and promote the industrial, economic, commercial and civic development of the City of Newark, Ohio.” Board members are appointed by the City of Newark and the Licking County Chamber of Commerce. Fred Ernest has been the Executive Director of Newark Development Partners since 2013. His responsibilities include developing meaningful relationships within Newark, coordinating efforts with representatives of our government while leading Newark in the Revitalization era. Newark is being noticed throughout Ohio as a progressive city that is growing in population and has a strong economic development focus. BUILDING MOMENTUM UTILITY UPGRADE PROJECT Communication efforts include www.wedignewark.com Radio ads on WCLT Radio Network (126 weekly, :30 sec spots) Regularly scheduled Email Blasts featuring closings, openings and news Communication meetings hosting a segment at the beginning and ending of town hall meetings with open discussions focused around what’s immediately affecting the area Documentation of project and changes to serve as a historical piece for future generations DOWNTOWN LIVING PLANNED EVENTS Growth of Bluegrass on Main Street in its 3rd year Slice of Licking County featured live music, beer & wine garden, pizza vendors and much more including the 1st Annual On the Rooftop Pizza Challenge More Events to Come! Introduced downtown property owners to Federal and State Historic Tax Credit program for restoring or rehabbing a building in the Historical area Led the effort to develop over 10 lofts in a short period of time with over 50 more planned for development in the next 2 years Promoted outside investment to buy and develop buildings Developed a model loft for visitation and vision BROADREACH MARKETING Featured on various Columbus TV Stations including WBNS-10TV and WCMH-NBC4. Stories featured Loft Housing, Revitalization of Canal Market District and Streetscape Improvements Created & Communicated ReNewark Development of Strategic Growth Plan for attracting new residents to Newark W W W. W E D I G N E W A R K . C O M Because of the massive utility upgrade project, streetscape, traffic pattern change, Mt. Vernon & 4 th Street bridge replacement, courthouse rehab and many other construction projects, Newark Development Partners (NDP) developed www.wedignewark.com to enhance communication with the public. The website, as well as email blasts, were designed to offer downtown patrons and the community information such as the following: ▪ Where To Park ▪ Easy Downtown Travel Directions ▪ What’s Under Construction ▪ News of Interest ▪ Video Stories ▪ General Construction Update ▪ Events Sign up for email updates at: www.wedignewark.com FIRST ROUNDABOUT Located at South Park Place and South Second Street, the first of four roundabouts was installed around the Courthouse Square as part of the $19.9 million EPA mandated Utility Upgrade Project. Sarah Wallace, Mayor Jeff Hall, Dan DeLawder and Jerry McClain are the first to drive around Newark’s first Roundabout at the ribbon cutting on November 25, 2015 CANAL MARKET DISTRICT Funded by the T.J. Evans Foundation and The Gilbert Reese Family Foundation, The Canal Market District (CMD), located between 2nd and 3rd Streets on the south side of the Square, opened on May 27, 2016. CMD provides a great event space and hosts an outstanding Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays and Fridays. The G. Reese Family Foundation also cleaned the exterior of the Historic Jail that is located in the CMD area.
