Construction Plans
Presented to Public
On Monday, December 2 and
Wednesday, December 4 Project
Architect, Harding Dowell from EOP
Architects presented construction plans
to community members. In order to
provide quality 21st Century library
services, a design team worked to create
the plans, which add a several thousand
square-foot addition to the original 1904
building, giving the Library more space, as
well as preserving the culture and history
of the original Library. The library will
expand from 11,000 sq. ft. to 18,000 sq.
ft.
Dowell the Library building and
long-range planning teams, as well as the
Library Staff and Board hope to receive
feedback from the community to find out
how to make the Library reflect what is
Bourbon County.
“We want to inflect the building
with the landscape,” Dowell said, “When
we started this project, we initially
learned that Bourbon County and Paris
exist because of the land around it. We
want a building that tells the story of
Bourbon County.”
This is Dowell’s first time working in Paris, but he said there is so much
the community that makes
Kentucky so special.
“Paris is one of many small
communities in the state born out of
an agricultural past,” he said, “and
that’s something that we want to echo
and highlight in the new library.”
They plan to use local materials such as reclaimed barn and fence
wood and limestone throughout the
building. Dowell plans to pay homage
to Kentucky's rolling hills, streams,
woods and caves.
The design team is particularly
eager to receive input from local
artisans and craftspeople. The team
would like ideas about how to include
Bourbon County culture, art, crafts,
historic themes important to the
community, and local raw materials
into the new Library. You can contact
Library Director Mark Adler at
859-987-4419 with suggestions.
"Including the public is extremely important," said Library Director
Mark Adler. "We want Library patrons to
know they had a role in creating the new
Library, which will be uniquely Bourbon
County."
Adler added, “We envision the Library
as a destination where people
congregate and spend time.
2nd floor
We hope people will increasingly spend meaningful hours in the
expanded space."
This project is over 10 years
in the making. Careful and responsible
planning means that the Library will
be able to complete construction
without an increase in patron's taxes.
EOP Architects is currently
finalizing their plans for construction.
Library construction is expected to
start in late March or early April of
2014.
Miss Debbie Visits NASA!
When Paris-Bourbon County Children’s
Librarian, Debbie Horn, was selected to watch a
rocket launch, it was a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
She was one of six librarians from
Kentucky, and one of forty nationally, selected to
watch the Maven launch to Mars in Cocoa Beach,
Florida. Horn said the experience inspired her to
teach kids about space and Mars through library
programming .
“I have never felt so patriotic, than
when I saw the rocket go up,” she said. “I
remember where I was when John Glenn went
around the world, but to actually be there is a
whole different experience.”
This year’s summer reading is based
around science, and she hopes her experiences
will be reflected in the events.
Not only did she become enlightened
and gain new information, she gained
friendships from across the nation, meeting
librarians from Texas, Montana, California, and
New York. She recalled asking one of the
NASA scientists why they chose librarians over
teachers. He responded saying schools force
curriculum, teachers have to teach, but librarians inspire through programming.
