about the release Avie welcomes back an artist with a truly exciting project. For her debut solo recital, pianist
Evelyn Chang draws attention to her musical and cultural roots: to eastern
musical poetry. With a mixture of contemporary composers, Ma Shui-Long,
Dobrinka Tabakova and Leonid Desyatnikov and Scriabin’s 24 preludes Op.
11 , Evelyn Chang embarks upon an emotional and personal journey
showing her skills not only as a virtuoso but also as a true artist, fully
understanding the vocabulary of each of these works and also exploring her
experience in Western Culture.
Evelyn Chang about her album:
“Born in Taipei, my musical interests started the moment I was able to
repeat the tunes I heard on television, with my tiny voice and two fingers on
the piano. At thirteen, encouraged by my teacher Mary Kuok Chiu Tse, I
moved to London to study at the Purcell School of Music under Andrej
Esterházy. It was then that the exploration of western music and many other
cultures began. I embarked on a personal journey with a lot of traveling,
concerts, practicing and making music with friends from all over the world.
After studying at the Royal College of Music with professors Irina Zaritskaya and Andrew Ball, I made my
London debut in 2004 at the South Bank Centre. Some exciting reviews lead to a string of interesting projects,
working with various composers. I particularly enjoy being able to interact with composers, discovering different
ways to portray their ideas together as a team.
I deeply enjoy the enormous freedom one can experience in the expression of music. Regardless of genres, types,
forms or traditions, I find no boundaries when searching for the desired sound. Instinct has always been the
driving force in my musical journey. This curiosity leads me to playing solo, chamber music, electronic-acoustic
music and improvised music, collaborating with international artists, and also making recordings.
The idea of this album came from my love for miniatures and sounds with Eastern flavours. Altogether they form
a collection of beautiful tone poems. I wish to share these eastern colours with listeners from all backgrounds
because, to put it simply, they are beautiful”.
