Thanks to our sponsors, patrons, other event attendees and silent auction, the Tractor Supply Company Music Country Grand Prix skyrocketed to a new fundraising record this year! The event raised $180,000 to benefit Saddle Up!, almost $40,000 more than any previous year. The silent auction featured trips to mountain retreats in North Carolina, a historic riverside home in Virginia’s horse country, a charming ski house in Vermont, a 1975 Avanti II, and a private concert by Amy Grant. The silent auction also set a new record, bringing in almost $25,000! A big salute to Silent Auction Chair Lauren Peck and the auction committee. Blessed with a beautiful day (minus short showers), the Patrons Tent was sold out and filled with friendly fun. Similarly, the Paddock buzzed with cheer. Decorations Chair Lise Bohannon created a lovely patrons’ tent accented with royal blue, yellow and white with potted ferns and gerbera daisy bouquets. A hearty thanks to Puckett’s Gro. & Restaurant and Wild Iris for providing a delicious gourmet buffet. Texan Daniel Bedoya on Quattro won the competition, which featured a $40,000 purse. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Co-Chairs Sarah Ingram and Jennifer Pennington for all they do to make this event a resounding success year after year. A hearty thanks to all the volunteers who work hard to help produce the largest Saddle Up! annual fundraiser, bringing in over $1,000,000 since 2005. Condolences to the McGharen family The Saddle Up! family lost a long-time member, rider Sam McGharen, age 18, on July 1 when he died suddenly at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Many of you know Sam from the many years he rode at Saddle Up!, beginning at Leiper’s Fork. As his obituary stated and his life showed, Sam was a boy who loved life and who made friends with everyone he met. Sam was a senior at Brentwood High School and was scheduled to graduate from Saddle Up! this fall. He is survived by his parents, Shannon and David McGharen, triplet sister and brother Maggie and Charlie, and grandparents John and Bev Sellers, Jane and Max Stuckwisch, George and Elizabeth McGahren, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. “The Sam McGharen Memorial Fund” was created to benefit children and young adults living with special needs. Contributions may be made to the fund at any First Tennessee Bank branch. Oakview Elementary School and favor! events raise funds Thanks to Franklin’s Oakview Elementary School and the “Three Ladies of favor!” for launching first-time events to benefit Saddle Up!. Oakview Elementary School in Franklin raised more than $10,000 with its “Give a Hoot” 5K and fun run on April 19. More than 300 people register for the event, far exceeding expectations for its first time out of the starting blocks. A special thanks to event organizer Shannon Smith and all those who worked on the event. Hats off to our friends “The Three Ladies of favor!” who invited Saddle Up! to benefit from their first annual Derby Day event held at the Barn at Chavis Farm on May 3. The three ladies of favor! own and operate their event planning company that partners with organizations to create and design events with gratitude. The Derby Day party drew a festive crowd bedecked in Derby finery. Fun and games and delectable food made for a spirited afternoon – not to mention the excitement of the race. Thanks to favor! for presenting Saddle Up! $4,500 from the event. 615-794-1150 extension 32 [email protected] Grant Information Recent Grants Hershey - versatile and sweeter than candy Hershey is a black American Quarter Horse who is Mr. Versatility in his work at Saddle Up!, and sweet as can be to boot! Standing 14.2 hands tall, Hershey is 17 years old and has been at Saddle Up! for 3.5 years. He is a chameleon in his work here. He easily participates in walk and trot lessons with students who ride off-lead and just as easily works in lessons that require double sidewalkers – plus every other kind of lesson in between. Hershey is also part of our hippotherapy program and is one of the elite herd members who can be long-lined in his hippotherapy sessions. His favorite books are the Harry Potter ones because he has a lightning bolt marking on his forehead just like Harry! Last fall he was one of our champion apple bobbers at Halloween. Hershey is a wonderful member of our Saddle Up! family. The event has also grown into a widely popular and prestigious event enjoyed each year by hundreds of people in Middle Tennessee. It was voted “best party” by nFocus magazine for 2013. This year’s theme, “Summer’s Last Swing,” will set the stage for a bigger and better than ever event with high action polo, silent auction, antique car show and parade, cabana decorating competition, patrons dinner and so much more. EFL is a hands-on educational program that uses the interactions and developing relationships between horses and humans in an environment of learning and self-discovery. Through a curriculum of activities designed to address individual goals and needs, each equine interaction is framed to help students learn and grow. The barn/farm environment naturally lends itself as a unique multisensory classroom. Our Benton Hall Academy partnership: We launched our EFL program in 2012 with our Benton Hall Academy (BHA) partnership, a partnership that has grown and flourished. Led by headmaster Veronica Paradis, BHA has been Daniel added a military salute as he ended the marching solidly committed to our partnership. We are thrilled to announce parade with his equine comrade, Fame. that beginning this fall, BHA will offer the opportunity for all students to participate in the EFL program. The program began with 4 students one day a week for two how we present ourselves to others plus a horse knowledge hours for a limited number of weeks during the school year. With component similar to those included in U.S. Pony Club and Advanced Instructor/ESMHL (a specialty certification for EFL) 4-H competitions. This is a key outcome of EFL. Depending on their needs and interests, the Summer skills weeks: students can participate in sessions focusing on life/social skills, This summer, we offered two separate week-long summer academic projects, theme based sessions, or topics relating to the skills weeks using the EFL model for various goals. The weeks guidance department. incorporated EFL, horse knowledge and horse care. Both programs Students who participated in “EFL Two” last spring will also had the themes of “What Makes Us Special” and “Appreciating have another opportunity – to compete in the showmanship Others.” class of our October SUPER Show. Susan explained that the In the “Working and Learning with Horses,” our program for showmanship portion of the EFL program explored the social children 10 and older, the EFL curriculum saw the participants skills of respecting your own and others’ personal space, exploring body language and social cues with their horses, who are recognizing and establishing boundaries, and the dynamics of experts in these areas. In “Fun on the Farm,” the horses taught the children how to listen to others with their ears and their eyes and how to work with a partner and as a team. The third skills week focused on activities that enhanced reading skills, all in a fun environment. The excitement continues for EFL this fall. BHA was extremely happy and proud to announce that beginning this fall the Saddle Up! Equine Facilitated Learning Program will be offered to every student at BHA. All of the above highlights the many ways we can partner with the Saddle Up! equines to change and improve the lives of children. Catholic HEART Work Camp volunteers to serve Saddle Up! was lucky enough to have a group of volunteers from the Catholic HEART Work Camp this summer. 18 volunteers added a coat of paint to the fencing from the parking lot all the way to the road and across the front of our property. The next day, we had six volunteers prune and rake the trail. They also trimmed back all the brush that had been encroaching on trails. The youth volunteers who came to Saddle Up! were from several states including Alabama, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Catholic HEART Work Camp is a program that hosts service camps across the nation every summer to encourage Catholic youth to live out their faith through service to those in need. This year there were more than 350 teens, young adults and chaperones who came to Nashville to serve. Catholic HEART Work Camp volunteers painting the fences. Father Ryan High School hosted this group of campers. Saddle Up! sends a special thanks to our Instructor, Kate Cole, who got these young volunteers to serve at our farm. Hillsboro United Methodist Youth Group returns to volunteer The Youth Group from Hillsboro United Methodist Church returned to Saddle Up! for a second consecutive year for two days of projects. In 2013, the group helped build a fence that subdivides our pasture called Left Field. This year, 13 group members, a couple of chaperones and youth Pastor Derek Axelson came in June to tackle trimming all the bushes in our landscape beds around the parking lot and removing noticeable weeds. Once that was done, they started work on fence painting. You may have noticed the major portions of fencing near the outdoor arena that the group members painted. We really appreciate their dedication and hope to see them again next year! 615-794-1150 extension 23 [email protected] Volunteer Calendar New Volunteer Training Thursday, Sept. 18, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, noon - 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, noon - 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, noon - 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, 10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, noon - 4:30 p.m. Leader Training Thursday, Aug. 14, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m. Wish List Student/Volunteer Needs • Donations to ridership fund • Suncscreen • Bug Spray • Cases of bottled water (small bottles preferred) Equine Needs Hillsboro United Methodist Youth Group members take a moment to pose for a picture. 7 • Horse Sponsors • Dressage letter cones • Gift cards for: Tractor Supply Company Franklin Horse Supply Judy’s Tack Shop Staff Members: Cheryl Scutt, Executive Director [email protected] Peggy Plunkett, Business Director [email protected] Lindsey Wood, Program Director [email protected] Sarah Chenevert, Program Administrator [email protected] Knox Brewer, Development Director [email protected] Tina Carpenter, Development Coordinator [email protected] Kim Kline, Volunteer Services Director [email protected] Stephanie Louder, Volunteer Services Assistant [email protected] Nic Omnes, Farm Manager [email protected] Heather Mullen, Equine Manager [email protected] Kelley Newman to serve on the Board of American Hippotherapy Association Saddle Up! physical therapist Kelley Newman has accepted the position of Secretary for the Executive Board of the American Hippotherapy Association (AHA), whose mission is to educate and promote excellence in the field of equine assisted therapy. Equestrian Club members Emily and Lindsey Nancy Oglin-Swindell Newsletter Design / Editor [email protected] This summer has been full of activity here at Saddle Up!. Two kids that have really been on the move are Emily F. and Lindsey L.. These two young equestrians participate in the Saddle Up! Equestrian Club (SUEC), which we created in 2011 for our more advanced riders to increase their knowledge and skills in riding and caring for horses. Emily and Lindsey have been part of the SUEC since its beginning. They now handle and ride their Saddle Up! horses independently. Not only have they excelled in their knowledge of horses, but they are also started as volunteers at Saddle Up! this summer. This summer they participated in the SUEC Skills Week. This skills week was a 3-hour program daily from Monday through Friday when SUEC club members could learn more about, care for, and exercise some of our horses. Throughout the week, they rode a variety of horses but they still have their favorites. Lindsey has been riding Elvis for at least 4 years and with his help Lindsey is able to work on cantering and learning her canter leads. Volunteer Rogelio Anayas and Farm Manager Nic Omnes get red barn back to work When Saddle Up! moved to our current home in 2000, the red barn served as the base of operations with program and office space housed there. After the beautiful new facility was dedicated in March 2003, all operations moved to the new space. The red barn continued to house horses, equipment, hay and miscellaneous items, but was not used for programs. Until now. Thanks to volunteer Rogelio Anaya and Saddle Up! Farm Manager Nic Omnes, the red barn is being used for our school program with Benton Hall Academy, summer skills weeks, and as an optional site for things such as ground lessons. It also now provides much needed climate controlled dedicated storage space. Rogelio and Nic worked this summer to clean up the space, including tearing out the old carpet, scrubbing walls, cleaning the floors, adding a wall and door to separate the program and storage spaces, and otherwise getting the space useable again. This is especially important as our partnership with Benton Hall Academy expands in the fall, resulting in 50 to 60 BHA students participating in our equine facilitated learning program here vs. about 20 in the past two years. EFL and school program leader, Advanced Instructor Susan Lutz, is thrilled with the space. We will continue to keep horses, hay, equipment and similar items in the barn too. The red barn was the biggest project of the summer, but not the only one. Nic also created an additional platform and extra mounting block for our mounting ramp near the indoor arena. He is also coordinating the resealing of the driveway and parking lot that were redone last year. What people are saying... “ Kenbe asked today when he woke up, ‘Do I get to ride Pedro today?’ That made me smile, even though I had to say, ‘No!’ ” – Elizabeth Rogers, Kenbe’s mom (Kenbe is featured on the cover) “ I was so excited to learn that Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) would be offered through Saddle Up! and volunteered in the spring of 2014. The experience was magical as the children and horses worked together providing the children with life and coping skills. I think I received the greatest gift - ‘joy’ - to see the happy faces of the children walk more confidently out the door more prepared for life and the many decisions we make daily as human beings. ” – Kristy Williams, Board Member and EFL Volunteer Congratulations Martha Georgeson, Dr. Nathaniel Wright and Gretel horses in our programs due to her size and affable nature. And her trustworthiness! Two excerpts from Gretel’s nomination: “This horse knows when I am unbalanced and she stops. She is patient and stands still for the mount from my wheelchair. I have been able to do short off lead walks and on lead trots only because of her. She is a good horse,” long-time Saddle Up! rider and 2012 PATH International Youth Equestrian Robert Wells. “This horse has the most steady temperament of the horses I work with at the facility serving children with special needs. She works with one of the tallest participants requiring a very heavy physical assist. Her even and strong demeanor have allowed this participant to trot for the first time in his 15-year tenure as a participant,” Saddle Up! volunteer Sarah Ivy. (continued from page 1) that he brings to his work. He has served as the primary vet at Saddle Up! since 2007. We can count on him anytime our horses are in need. An excerpt from his nomination: “We had a long-time program horse who was declining in health and we all knew what the end result would be. As we decided that it was time for our ‘ole man’ to be put down, the vet recommended that we bring him to his clinic. Two staff and a volunteer escorted our fine equine to the clinic and stroked him as he was put to final rest, there was not a dry eye in the clinic, not even for our vet. He had served this horse for years and didn’t want his final moments to accidently be seen by a child. . .” Program Director Lindsey Wood.
