id you know that your spcaLA created an at risk youth anti-violence program
that is being used nationally in states like Oregon, Kansas, New York and
Georgia, and internationally in Europe, Australia and Canada? Piloted and
ongoing in Southern California schools, we work with youth, using shelter dogs, to
teach them conflict resolution, anger management and empathy. Empathy is the
cure for violence against animals and people. It began right here in
Los Angeles with your spcaLA.
Did you know that your spcaLA has a domestic violence program that assists
victims who need to leave a violent situation, but won’t if they have to leave a pet
behind? This program has assisted pets from as far away as Florida because no other
spca has such a thorough program. You have it here with your spcaLA.
Did you know that your spcaLA developed a comprehensive shelter management
software program that is being used throughout our country and, just recently, at a
shelter in Dublin, Ireland?
Did you know that your spcaLA has a state-of-the-art disaster response unit that
deploys locally to fires (most recently the Station Fire-the largest fire in California),
floods and earthquakes as well as nationally when requested. We were one of only
eight first responders called upon to assist in Texas in the wake of Hurricane Ike and
only one of two (the other was a Missouri SPCA unit) deployed to Galveston—the
worst affected by the storm.
Did you know that every spca in the country is a separate legal entity despite confusing commercials and advertising campaigns? The New York spca was the first to
form in America in 1866 and aptly named itself. Your spcaLA opened its doors in
1877. Throughout the country different spcas were allowed to form as the laws in
each state so permitted. However, only one spca solicits donations away from all the
others under the misimpression that they are an umbrella entity that sends funds
to non existent chapters. It is the same with any humane society not based in Los
Angeles. Their funds are not mandated to support the animals in our community
based upon the zip code of the donor. Though there are now complaints, inquiries
and investigations into the ethics of such fundraising tactics—the responsibility
ultimately lies with you, the donor, to know where you are donating your
hard earned money despite attempts to confuse you. spcaLA applauds work that is
carried out on behalf of animals anywhere in the country and hopes that you can
afford to donate to multiple organizations. Your choice must still be an informed one.
Your spcaLA actually has a local, national and international footprint with boots
on the ground serving animals that need us. In these trying economic times it is
particularly critical that we work together, and educate others who are confused
about where their funds are going so we succeed in our mission.

Foster Kittens Full of Love and Sweetness
Crispen had been the last of his litter mates to be adopted;
I got him a friend, Howie, just 2 months later. I want to
thank whoever raised Crispen before I adopted him. They
certainly raised a good kitty. He is full of love and
sweetness.
What a difference to have a kitten that has been in foster
care before adoption. They (Crispen and Howie) are best of
friends and get in line to have their tummies scratched!! I’m
so grateful for the Long Beach facility for finding the two
most purrrfect pets for me. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

Animal Safety Net* a Huge Success
I wanted to thank you again and how I appreciate the gift
this program has given me and my son. My dogs are home
now, but I can tell they were taken very good care of.
Freddy was very sketchy before and now he is more loving.
Ralph is right back to his very loving and precious way.
They were the light at the end of the tunnel for me. I had to
basically start a new life at the age of 45.
I became an office worker and was able to leave the
Domestic Violence Shelter and now live in my own
apartment. I now have reunited my family (minus the
abuser) and am ready to live a free and loving life. I am
forever grateful to you and the spcaLA for all you have
done. Thank you and know you will forever be in our hearts.
Great Organization, Great Volunteers, Great Pets!
I adopted Nora (Pit Bull mix) on June 7th, and I know
animals come in and out of this shelter daily but Nora
seemed to be a special case in that she’d been with the
shelter for a couple of years and I could tell the volunteers/
employees really took good care of her and were excited for
her to have found a home.
Nora is such an amazing dog; she is sweet and gentle.
She has acclimated well to the house, at first she was very
hesitant and scared but now she knows our home is her
home. She loves to sunbathe in the yard but of course
when it gets warm, she finds the shade under our ficus tree
as the best spot to stay cool. She loves her daily walks...
she was a bit overweight when she left the shelter but has
lost some of the pounds and has more energy. She’s in such
good shape, that I can take her out for a jog to the park.
She’s great with my nephews and enjoyed her first 4th of
July with my entire family! I love coming home after a hard
day at work to find Nora greeting me and doing what I call
her “happy dance.” Nora is also very trainable for being an
older dog; she’s so smart and catches on quickly.
In short, I wanted to say “thank you” for having such a
great organization and amazing volunteers (I visited the
shelter 4 or 5 times before deciding on Nora...everyone was
so helpful).

Easing the Pet Overpopulation Crisis
Have you ever seen a basket of kittens—too young to open
their eyes with no mamma—on your doorstep? Or, has a
dog, hit by a car while looking for a mate, ever come
limping into your living room? Probably not. But for spcaLA
and shelters across America, the reality is that thousands
of motherless puppies and kittens, injured or lost adult
animals and more come through our doors each year.
There are too many pets and not enough homes.
The solution: pets need to be spayed or neutered.
spcaLA opened the spcaLA Specialty Spay/Neuter Center
in late October 2008 to do just that. The Center provides
spay/neuter services, as well as routine vaccinations and
microchipping. Financial assistance is available to those
who qualify, while funding lasts.
Adoptions, Enrichment and More
We provide for both the physical needs (spay/neuter,
microchip, vaccinations and more complex treatments) and
mental needs (enrichment activities, basic obedience and
socialization) of our shelter pets. spcaLA also relies on our
network of foster volunteers to provide care to animals not
yet ready for adoption. All of this serves to make our pets
less stressed and more adoptable.
spcaLA provides a host of resources to pet owners:
a free behavior hotline, dog training (from the basics to

agility and fun nose work), low-cost vaccination clinics,
expert advice for the care and proper nutrition of pets at
spcaLA Marketplaces, professional and self-service
grooming and boarding at the spcaLA Pet Hotel and
Grooming Salon. All serve to strengthen the human-animal
bond and reduce the likelihood that animals will end up
back in the shelter.
spcaLA to the Rescue
For the spcaLA Disaster Animal Response Team (DART), the
year came in with a hurricane and went out with the largest
wildfire in California history.
In September 2008, we answered the call for aid in
Galveston, Texas, after Hurricane Ike. One of only eight
humane organizations permitted in the danger zone, DART
spent 10 days providing rescue, relief, shelter and front-line
veterinary care to countless animals.
At the request of Los Angeles County authorities, DART
was one of the first to respond to the La Cañada Flintridge
or “Station” fire in late August 2009. While there, we
rescued some 500 animals—including many exotics at a
wildlife sanctuary in Sylmar. In the course of our work, one
of spcaLA’s vehicles was badly damaged and will need to
be replaced (no people or animals were hurt).

How Do We Do It?
spcaLA relies 100% on donations – we do not receive a
penny of government funding, and there is no national
spca or humane society that provides support. We have
reduced fund development expenses, so an impressive
76% of funding goes directly into spcaLA programs and
services, while 14% goes to management/general
expenses and 10% is used for fundraising.

An Ounce of Prevention. . .
Studies show that cruelty toward animals by children may
be a symptom of existing domestic violence, as well as a
predictor of future violence toward people. In fact, the
majority of convicted serial killers, rapists and other violent
criminals have histories of animal cruelty.
spcaLA’s international program, “Teaching Love and
Compassion” (TLC) is a way to break this cycle of violence:
if compassion and respect for animals can be taught at a
young age, violence toward animals can stop, and in turn
lessen violence toward people. This year, we ran five TLCs
locally, reaching 39 at-risk youth. TLC is used by humane
organizations all over the world to break the cycle of
violence.

One such program, Teaching Love and Compassion (TLC), is a shining example of how local
support can help change global thinking. TLC
was created by YOUR spcaLA and has helped
hundreds of young people, like Guillermo Silva
and Cindy (opposite), gain empathy and respect
for themselves and others while socializing
hundreds of shelter pets, making them more
adoptable. Without your support, spcaLA
would not be able to positively impact our
community and offer resources and compassion
to all of Los Angeles.
Los Angeles is no stranger to acts of violence. We see it
locally in the news, in our schools, in our homes and in our
communities. Every day, adults, children and animals are
victims of violent acts. Organizations in your community,
like YOUR spcaLA, have designed programs to help break
the cycle of violence. In 1994, TLC was created in an effort
to re-instill empathy into the lives of young students, and
make a positive change for the lives of people and animals.
spcaLA’s TLC program works directly with school age
students who have shown signs of being “at-risk.” These
signs include but are not limited to: acts of aggression,
poor social behaviors and choices, decreasing grades, poor
self esteem, severe truancy, gang affiliation, possible
substance abuse, entrance into the juvenile system, and
many others. The TLC program teaches conflict resolution,
anger management, communication skills, and community
participation through a series of classroom teachings.
However, the most compelling part of TLC is the chance for
students to build a relationship with a shelter dog.
Students and their dogs build an incredible bond throughout the TLC journey. Many students get to encounter new
feelings of unconditional love, respect, kindness, and
hope.
The children involved in TLC have the unique opportunity to participate in a program where they can experience
empathy in order to understand it. Empathy is the cure for
violence toward animals and people. Over the course of the
program students are paired with a specific shelter dog.
Usually, these dogs are also considered “at-risk” due to
different factors, such as: breed, coloration, improper
kennel behaviors or manners, size or age. Students are
taught the basics of positive reinforcement training, and
learn how to shape dog behavior through patience,
motivation, and non-verbal communication.
In the beginning, many students are doubtful about
their own abilities and are tentative about the shelter dogs.
By the end of the program, the students have the opportunity to read a self-written speech, and show off their dog’s
skills, at a community graduation. TLC students are rarely
at a loss for words about their dogs and their experience.
Most TLCs end in the bittersweet reality that the kids
themselves are the reason these shelter dogs have a better
chance of both being adopted and permanently staying in
their homes.
Programs like TLC are crucial to the development of
youth and the future protection of animals. Since violence
has been shown to be cyclical and often begins by
occurring toward animals, it is imperative that spcaLA
continues to offer programs, like TLC, to the community.
In times like these when every helpful effort counts,
supporting your local organizations will go a long way.
Just ask a TLC graduate, or an adopter of a TLC dog,
about the impact TLC has made on their lives. Supporting
YOUR spcaLA not only means locally helping animals but
also keeps programs like TLC around; so that we may
continue to build healthier and stronger communities
here in Los Angeles.

spcaLA around town
spcaLA was all over Southern California in 2009 reaching
out to the community by hosting Low Cost Vaccine Clinics
and adoption events; attending community fairs and city
council meetings; and hosting events to raise awareness and
funds for abused and neglected animals. Here’s a look at
some of the events of which we are most proud.
spcaLA Night with Kings
The Los Angeles Kings organization, players and coaches
contribute so much to help make this event a winner! The
Kings generously donated amazing fan experiences for our
Pre-Game eBay Auction. The players and coaches created
one-of-a-kind decorated pet bowls and autographed Kings
memorabilia for our Silent Auction during the game.
Through ticket sales and the auctions, more than $5,000
was raised for animals in need! 2010’s spcaLA Night with
the Kings is January 14 and the Pre-Game eBay Auction
begins December 14th.

Spay Day USA
Spay Day USA is a nationwide event to promote spaying
and neutering in an effort to curb pet overpopulation. For
Spay Day USA 2009, spcaLA was the TOP beneficiary in the
Online Pet Photo Contest that raised funds for spay and
neuter surgeries. More than $9,700 was raised by folks like
YOU who nominated pets and garnered votes. 2010’s Spay
Day USA is scheduled for February 23rd. To kick off the
event, spcaLA’s Specialty Spay/Neuter Center will host a
Low Cost Vaccine Clinic on February 20th.
Hero Dog
spcaLA’s 2008 Hero Dog was a “mutt” named Miley from
Van Buren, Arkansas. Miley woke her owner, Stacie Pitts,
who was slowly being poisoned by carbon monoxide
leaking from a faulty heater while she and her family slept.
Though carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, Miley
sensed something was wrong. Without her, Miley’s family
could have perished. spcaLA presented Miley with a plaque
and Natura Pet Products donated a year’s worth of free pet
food to the hero pooch.

Kitten Palooza
Kitten Palooza was July 11th at the South Bay Pet Adoption
Center in Hawthorne. This cat and kitten adoption event
was a great success! In addition to THE SOUND 100.3
providing the tunes, Honest Tea supplied refreshing
beverages and Natura Pet Products provided free pet food
samples to the paloozers. The South Bay Pet Adoption
Center adopted out 20 cats and kittens in one day! Folks
came from all over Los Angeles to adopt kittens and cats
from spcaLA; some even adopted felines in pairs.
spcaLA Pet Adoption Day Presented by
Mark & Brian and 95.5 KLOS
Despite a soggy start at the P.D. Pitchford Companion
Animal Village and Education Center, the 4th Annual
spcaLA Pet Adoption Day was a dream come true. During
the event, and the weeks leading up to it, spcaLA found
homes for over 300 animals, including one special dog who
had been with us for two and half years! spcaLA thanks
everyone who came out to support us and the animals.
Foster Class
This past fiscal year, spcaLA held monthly Foster Classes at
our South Bay and Long Beach facilities. On average, 20
potential new foster parents attended each class and
spcaLA was able to place more than 500 pets in foster care.
spcaLA’s Foster Program gives pets who are too young to
be adopted, like “bottle babies” the opportunity to reach
adoptable age in a safe environment. The program cares
for pets of all ages and needs, such as infirm pets and pets
in need of one-on-one socialization from a loving caregiver
in a home environment.

he Peace of Mind Pet Re-Homing Program is
for those precious four-legged loved ones that
you care so much about. Typically, pets live shorter
lives than their human companions. Unfortunately,
sometimes it is the human that becomes ill or passes
away first.
To ensure that beloved pets continue to receive
excellent care, it is important to plan ahead. spcaLA
