The ballet is the oldest continually-‐performed, universally-‐popular piece since its premiere, at Théâtre de l'Académie Royale de Musique in Paris, on June 28, 1841, with choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli and music by Adolphe Adam. The central theme, a redemptive love that triumphs from beyond the grave, is a perfect example of Romantic era obsession with the supernatural and infinite, ideas that pervaded music and literature of the day. The title role is often referred to as the ballet equivalent of Hamlet — requiring a ballerina that can handle the role's intense technical complexities and nuanced theatricality. A successful interpretation of Giselle is a benchmark in many a world famous ballerina's career. In Act I, our heroine, Giselle, an innocent peasant girl born with a weak heart, falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman masquerading as a peasant. Upon discovering that Albrecht has lied about his identity and is engaged to a fellow aristocrat, Giselle goes mad from the shock and dies of a broken heart. Today's performance commences at the start of Act II, which is set in a moonlit forest inhabited by the Wilis, young women who were engaged to be married, yet died before their wedding days. Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, opens the scene, calling the Wilis to rise from their graves and dance in the moonlight. After a brief dance, the Wilis gather around Giselle's grave. Myrtha invites her to rise and join their ghostly coven. Next we meet the ill-‐fated Hilarion, a childhood friend of Giselle, who comes to the forest to mourn, but finds himself trapped by the vengeful Myrtha and the Wilis. Myrtha mercilessly orders Hilarion to dance to death, and despite his pleas and valiant attempts to escape, he is over powered and killed. Albrecht, the unfaithful suitor, also in the forest to mourn Giselle's death, steps onto the scene. Myrtha again, orders him to die, however, Giselle intervenes. In a selfless act of forgiveness and love, she protects Albrecht, by dancing in his stead when he is too exhausted to go on. When dawn arrives, Myrtha and the Wilis are rendered powerless. Giselle's eternal love for Albrecht triumphs, and she returns to her grave leaving Albrecht alive and alone. — Sarah Duclos WEDCO 2013 Christine Chang-‐Chien '13 Palmer Jordon '15 Andrea Conde '14 Yasmine Kaya '15 Leigh Marie Braswell '14 Jamie Lee '13 Tori Dakin '15 Adela Locsin '13 Violet Davis '14 Leo Luo '13 Kimberly Dawes '15 Erin NaPier '13 Kristina Elhauge '14 Mikayla Reine '13 Hannah Fuller '15 Tina Safford '14 Ingrid Gutierrez '13 Lydia Stahr '14 Selah Hampton '13 Grace Stinson '16 Claire Hawkins '16 Amy Wang '14 Molly Horgan '13 Sarah Xiao '13 Director of Dance: Allison Duke Dance Faculty: Sarah Duclos Dance Captains: Molly Horgan, Jamie Lee, Adela Locsin, Leo Luo, Mikayla Reine Lighting Design: Christine Redihan Set Design: Cary Wendell Costume Design/Construction: Lorissa Summermatter Stitchers: Katie Spanier, Sara Daley, Rhiannon Duke Light Board Operator: Muyunji Tembo Sound Board Operator: Zadie Ross Special Thanks to: Pamela Parris, Jessica Soucy, Linda Safford, Bo Xu, Becky Barsi, Alex Shook, Marius Price, Muyunji Tembo, Facilities Management
