Returns to Windsong From NYC
Dr. Eve Li, M.D. has returned to Windsong Radiology Group
from New York Presbyterian Hospital affiliated with Columbia
University Medical Center, New York, NY. Dr. Li originally came
to Western New York to work with Dr. Janet Sung at Windsong
in March 2010 upon completion of her fellowship in Breast
Imaging, but missed New York City. She moved back to NYC
in September 2010.
Dr. Li is a Fellowship trained radiologist specializing in
Women’s Imaging and will be seeing patients at our Spindrift
Drive office in Williamsville at the Dr. Janet H. Sung Women’s
Imaging Center at Windsong. Dr. Li is also very excited about
the ability to offer comprehensive breast care at Windsong
with renowned practices in breast surgery and oncology at
the Windsong Comprehensive Breast Care Center with the
recent designation and accreditation by the NAPBC. Dr. Li will
additionally present newly diagnosed breast cancer patients
at the Monday morning Multi-Disciplinary Conferences at
Windsong. Dr. Li is an honors graduate of Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA and continued her
medical education at Columbia University, College of
Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY.

Upon completion of her medical education, Dr. Li fulfilled
her residency program in Diagnostic Radiology at the New
York Presbyterian Hospital affiliated with Columbia University
Medical Center, New York, NY. Dr. Li continued with a
radiology Fellowship in Body MRI at New York Presbyterian
Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York, NY. After
completion of this Fellowship, she continued with a radiology
Fellowship in Breast Imaging funded by Avon Foundation.
She is Board Certified, Fellowship trained and specializes
in all breast related modalities including mammography,
ultrasound and MRI. She will be performing stereotactic,
ultrasound guided and MRI guided biopsies as well as needle
localizations and she joins us full time as a Women’s Imager
fluent both in Chinese (Mandarin) and English.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
Sunday September 30th
The announcement was made on Thursday, January
19th at the Dr. Janet H. Sung Women’s Imaging Suite with
local dignitaries and elected officials present to join in the
announcement. Congressman Brian Higgins and Amherst
Town Supervisor Dr. Barry Weinstein were on hand to address
and meet with physicians and guests. County Executive Mark
Poloncarz’s representative read a proclamation designating
January 19, 2012 as Windsong Comprehensive Breast Care
Day in Erie County.
Windsong Comprehensive Breast Care has established
collaborative partnerships to support the medical treatment
of breast cancer. They include: UB|MD - Division of Genetics,
X-Cell Labs, Cancer Counseling Services, Center for Plastic
Surgery, Supportive Medical Partners, and WNY Nutrition.

Group missed Dr. Li and the feeling was mutual. Dr. Janet
Sung commented, “We are fortunate that Dr. Li has decided
to return to Buffalo to continue the good work that she
started two years ago.” Dr. Li explained, “I really missed the

It takes a team to fight breast cancer, you are not alone.
The question often comes up related to the difference
between Screening and Diagnostic level mammography.
Patients sometimes call asking us why their mammogram
has a co-pay or is subject to a deductible. “Mammograms
are covered in full by my insurance,” is a common theory
until we look at the patient’s insurance contract. There
is a difference, and we want to provide you with an
explanation and guidelines that we must follow when
it comes to discerning whether the patient is here
presenting for a Screening Mammogram or a Diagnostic
Mammogram.
According to the American College of Radiology
(ACR), symptomatic women or those with previously
detected abnormality for whom a short-term follow up
or further evaluation has been recommended are not
candidates for screening mammography. Also under the
Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) guidelines,
if a woman arriving for a screening examination indicates
she has a clinical breast problem, the facility must have a
process by which she is converted to a diagnostic level.

Multidisciplinary Conferences
Every other Monday morning between 7:00 - 8:00 AM a group
of physicians meet in the Windsong Community & Conference
Room to discuss newly diagnosed breast cancer patients
and their individualized plan of care. Dr. Katherine O’Donnell,
Breast Surgeon presents the case along with radiologists and
pathologists
After the case is presented, the group which also includes
medical oncologists from Century Medical Associates and
radiation oncologists from CCS Oncology then corroboratively
tailor an individualized treatment plan for the patient. The
primary care physicians associated with the patient are also
invited to attend the session to help complete the team.

Screening Mammography – Patients present with no
complaints, problems or prior breast surgery history. Two
standard views of each breast are obtained, and there
are no abnormalities detected. In addition, under Center
for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines,
a Radiologist who interprets a screening mammogram is
allowed to order and interpret additional films based on any
abnormal findings of the screening mammogram. Windsong
Radiology Group follows the CMS guidelines as do most
insurance carriers.
Diagnostic Mammography – unlike Screening Mammography,
Diagnostic mammography is provided to patients with clinical
or screen-detected abnormalities. It is performed on patients
with signs or symptoms of breast disease, patients with a
possible abnormality detected on screening mammogram
or on patients who had prior imaging findings requiring
specific shorter term follow up. The goal of diagnostic
level mammography is to obtain information that leads to
specific interpretive conclusions and/or further diagnostic
and management recommendations or course of action.
The patient’s history, symptoms, physical exam and results of
other prior mammography will dictate the necessity of the
diagnostic mammogram.

With the advent of this game changing technology comes the
reality of health insurance coverage for the patient. Windsong
Radiology Group has prepared an information sheet for our
patients, and the choice as to accept or decline Digital Breast
Tomosynthesis if recommended.
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) involves acquiring
images of a breast a multiple angles during a short scan.
Tomosynthesis images are captured while you are already
in compression for the regular 2-D digital images, scanning
through the breast. After the images are reconstructed on
a computer, they are displayed for the Radiologist as a
series of thin high-resolution slices that provide topography
(mapping) of any abnormalities including size, contour
and the relationship with the surrounding breast tissue. The
images can be displayed and reviewed individually or in
a 3-D dynamic mode. With so many additional images to
review, please do not worry if this causes a minor delay in
waiting for your results.
Breast Tomosynthesis will be performed only when
medically appropriate from the Mammography Department
at Windsong Radiology Group. For high risk screening
patients, Tomosynthesis offers the Radiologist improved
subtle cancer detection and a lower recall rate, especially
in dense breast tissue. For patients who are considered
high risk, patients with a family history of breast cancer, or
patients with an abnormal screening mammogram, Breast
Tomosynthesis is considered the standard care in screening
mammography.

Our Radiologists believe DBT is a valuable tool to provide
definitive diagnosis. DBT has also aided in the reduction of
unnecessary additional recalls and invasive procedures.
Therefore we anticipate full coverage and cooperation
from local carriers in the future.
As of today, your plan does not provide DBT coverage. while
we will submit the claim with medical necessity information,
you may receive a bill. We will make every effort to appeal
any rejections, and in no case will we charge patients out
of pocket in excess of $50.00
