A Legacy of
Excellence
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT) was founded in
1969 as an affiliate of Point Park College under
the direction of Artistic Director Nicholas Petrov and
Board Chair Loti Falk. Petrov invited Frederick
Franklin to join PBT as Co-Artistic Director in
1974. Under their leadership, PBT entered into
an era of tremendous growth and became fully
independent from Point Park College in 1977.
PBT's artistic philosophy has been shaped by its
visionary Artistic Directors. In the late 1970's,
French dancer and choreographer Patrick Frantz
emphasized contemporary works in the Company's
repertoire. In the early 1980's, New York City
Ballet prima ballerina Patricia Wilde brought to
the Company a mastery of the classic works.
Under Wilde's leadership, PBT became known
for its brilliant execution of the works of George
Balanchine. Since the late 1990's, with the
arrival of Terrence S. Orr, former Ballet Master
of American Ballet Theatre, PBT has nourished
innovations for the future of ballet through the
creation of new works while it has paid tribute
to the traditional ballet masterpieces.
Throughout its 38 years, PBT has grown and
greatly benefited from its exposure to a very large
and eclectic number of dance luminaries who
appeared as guest dancers, teachers and
choreographers. The most notable have included:
Ethel Winters, Violette Verdy, Edward Villella,
Natalia Markova, Peter Schaufauss, Freddie
Franklin, Leonide Massine, Vitale Fokine, Agnes
DeMille, Edward Caton, Ruth Page, Nijinska, Alvin
Ailey, Ohad Naharin, and Domy Reiter-Soffer.
PBT has toured extensively throughout its history
to twenty-eight states, Canada, Puerto Rico, and
the Dominican Republic with a repertoire rich
in classics and new works created by today’s
contemporary choreographers. The PBT School
features a comprehensive curriculum and a
unique program in collaboration with Pittsburgh's
Schenley High School that offers the opportunity
for education concurrent with rigorous professional
ballet training. A belief that everyone should have
the opportunity to participate in and grow through
the arts has led to comprehensive program of Arts
Education and Community Engagement initiatives.

Stellar
Performances
LeRoy L. Metz, II
PBT delivered stellar performances, both on and off stage in the 2006/2007 season, signaling a
resurgence of strength as the organization approaches a 40th anniversary in 2009/2010. For the
first time in six years, PBT ended the season solidly in the black.
Harris N. Ferris
While the Company soared to live music in repertoire that covered classical and contemporary terrain,
the PBT School continued to build upon its national reputation of excellence. As testimony to its high
quality program, more than half of this year’s graduate students received professional offers from
national ballet companies.
The 2006/2007 season also witnessed an increased impact on the community through PBT’s
Arts Education and Community Engagement initiatives. Programs such as Discover Dance and
Creative Movement brought artists into schools and community settings, reaching some 22,000
children and families.
Terrence S. Orr
National and regional tours elevated PBT's profile last year and provided expanded performance
opportunities for our dancers. PBT enjoyed national dates in Baltimore, MD; St. Louis, MO; and
Fairfax, VA; with regional engagements in Allison Park, Johnstown and Fox Chapel.
Gratitude extends to the extraordinary dedication of the PBT Board and the generosity of a growing
legion of friends and supporters. Thanks to broad community support, PBT is well positioned to
build upon last year’s positive momentum, to cement gains in long-term fiscal stability, and, through
continued artist excellence, to exert a vital impact upon the region.

PBT values the loyalty of our subscriber base. Of 2,247 subscriber households, some
41% have been with PBT for more than 5 years, while over 17% have been with us
for more than 15 years. When the decision was made to eliminate the Thursday
evening and Saturday matinee performances from the 2006/2007 season, PBT
faced the challenge of reseating 1,200 subscribers - which represents 28% of our
subscriber base. PBT placed the highest priority on these individuals and decreased
attrition from displacement to 9% through customer service. At the same time,
vigorous marketing achieved a 32% increase in acquisition of new subscribers

Pittsburgh Ballet
Theatre School
The PBT School continues to maintain its stature as one of the nation's leading ballet training academies.
The PBT School assimilates the high artistic standards and rich traditions inherent to a world-class
ballet company. In this environment of excellence, students progress at an individual pace through a
comprehensive curriculum. Training at the PBT School culminates with the cornerstone Schenley and
Graduate programs that prepare students for their career as a professional dancer.
The mission of the PBT School is to provide students of all ages, resident and global, a quality dance
education and a lifelong interest in the arts. To reach new students, PBT implemented a program in
2006/2007 at the Boyd Community Center in Fox Chapel, where 40 children were introduced to
beginning ballet through 30 weeks of classes. Scholarships remain a vital component of the PBT School’s
mission, as not all students can afford tuition to attend a professional training academy. In 2006/2007,
PBT provided financial assistance through scholarships and work studies to more than 65 students.

Arts Education and
Community Engagement
PBT believes that the opportunity to participate in and to grow through the arts should be extended to
everyone. PBT's Arts Education and Community Engagement programs were initiated in 1989 with a
Student Matinee performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Over their 18 year history, PBT's Arts
Education and Community Engagement programs have reached an estimated 200,000 people.
These initiatives bring dancers and artists into the community, inspire an appreciation for the performing arts
in children, enable patrons to develop a deeper understanding of ballet, and provide tickets to those who
may not otherwise experience a ballet performance. During the 2006/2007 season, these programs
reached nearly 22,000 people in the Greater Pittsburgh region.

Pointe in Time Ball
and Auction
The evening of November 10, 2006, was a night to remember.
Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s annual Ball and Auction, renamed
this year Pointe in Time, was chaired by Susan and John Block.
The PBT Company entertained guests when they danced
selections from Nine Sinatra Songs and Peter Pan. The gala
event was attended by 450 people who danced the night away
to music provided by CityScape. The event raised more than
$200,000 through corporate sponsorships, ticket sales,
silent and live auctions, and donations.
Jim Roddey, Former Allegheny County Chief Executive, hosts the live auction.

Hartwood Acres Picnic
PBT donors and friends of were invited to a special picnic prior to
the annual performance at Hartwood Acres on August 24, 2006.
Under the striped tent, guests had an opportunity to mingle with
the dancers and chat about the upcoming season.
Dr. Freddie Fu and Mrs. Hilda Fu with PBT Corps de Ballet members Christine Schwaner and Alexandre Silva.
2006/2007 Season Kick-Off
PBT Trustee Jim Hardie and his wife Frances at the Hartwood picnic
Trustee and supporter, Dr. Freddie Fu graciously hosted a season kick-off party for
PBT on September 26, 2006 at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine.
Party in Neverland
Before the eyes of eager
youngsters, Neverland came
to life in the lower lobby of
the Benedum Center on
February 17, 2007.
Sponsored by Paragon
Wealth Investment Management,
the party took place prior to
a PBT matinee performance
of Peter Pan. Games, activities,
and excitement filled the space
as children filled loot bags with
“Pirate Booty,” walked the
plank, and had their pictures
taken with characters from
the show.

Farewell Party
Following their final bows at the September 28, 2006 performance of Swan Lake,
PBT family and friends bid adieu to two of its most beloved dancers, Ying Li and
Jiabin Pan, who retired after a 12-year career with PBT.
