On the second Saturday in May every year, U.S. residents
donate nonperishable food items for letter carriers to
collect in a nationwide campaign to benefit community
food banks. While this tradition of community service
occurs annually, few of us are aware of how the National
Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food
Drive got started. The pilot drive in October 1991 emerged
from conducive engagements between AFL-CIO President
Vincent Sombroto and Postmaster General Anthony
Frank which expanded into the biggest single-day food
collection in the country. Since its official conception in
1992 through last year, the NALC Food Drive has
contributed more than 1.4 billion pounds of food to feed
the hungry, particularly the children in need who don’t
have access to subsidized school lunch programs in the
summer. This year’s 24th Annual NALC Stamp Out
Hunger Food Drive held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, is
expected to exceed last year’s national total of 71 million
pounds, estimated to be worth $150 million.
In Hawaii, Letter Carriers have come together to benefit
local food banks: Hawaii Foodbank, Hawaii Foodbank –
Kauai Branch, The Food Basket on the Big Island and
Maui Food Bank to provide food for pantries, shelters and
agencies. The statewide coordinated effort led by the NALC
Committee of Hawaii including Terry Kaolulo, HSALC
President, NALC Food Drive Co-Chairs Adele
Yoshikawa of the Pearl City Post Office, Cynthia Ichizaki
of the Downtown Post Office, Clay Tamaki, Catherine
Lederer, The Hawaii State AFL-CIO, LCSP Director, and
Stan Markle, Director of Product Resourcing of Hawaii
Foodbank organized with various unions and sponsors to
ensure the success of this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food
drive. During the week of May 9 approaching the event,
plastic bags sponsored by the Hawaii State AFL-CIO,
McDonalds of Hawaii, Menehune Water Company and
Honolulu Freight Service were delivered to mailing
residences and P.O. Boxes statewide. In addition, nearly
200,000 announcements sponsored by the Hawaii State
AFL-CIO, McDonalds of Hawaii, Menehune Water
Company and Service Printers Hawaii along with the
support of the DOE, HSTA and HGEA were distributed to
students at over 400 public, private and charter schools
across the state. The Hawaii State AFL-CIO’s Labor
Community Services Program coordinated volunteers
consisting of HGEA AFSCME Local 152, HSTA-R and ILWU
Local 142 retirees to meet at IBEW 1186 to assemble the
flyers for statewide distribution.
COOPERATION
Together on the day of the NALC Food Drive, letter
carriers gathered and stored food donations at postal
stations throughout Oahu. Trucks provided by
Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii, Armstrong Produce,
Hawaii Foodservice Alliance, Hawaii Logistics,
Hawaii Transfer Company, HFM FoodService,
Honolulu Freight Service, Meadow Gold Dairies,
Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Hawaii, Royal
Hawaiian Movers and WDI transported food donations
picked up from post offices were received at the Hawaii
Foodbank where nearly 500 volunteers worked
tirelessly for 6 hours with the warehouse staff to unload,
weigh, sort, box, palletize, wrap and store the collected
nonperishables. In the evening, Koala Moa Chicken
dinner plates provided by Kaiser Permanente were
served to all of the hardworking participants.

On March 19, 2016, the Hawaii Foodbank
warehouse transformed into a brimming hub to host
nearly 800 guests for an evening of Epicurean
delight. The 10th annual signature culinary event,
Great Chefs® Fight Hunger showcased a brilliant
ensemble of over 20 of Hawaii’s culinary masters
that gathered to dazzle the senses and nourish our
community.
At this year’s annual
fundraiser, Great Chefs® Fight
Hunger Ilima and Hibiscus
ticketholders were escorted to
their tables by our talented
and lovely title holders: Miss
Hawaii United Continents
Easter-Lily Smith, Miss
Kaka'ako Halialani Parish,
and Miss Diamond Head
Teisa Worley. Our Ilima
Premium VIP table purchasers
– Mrs. Joan Bellinger, HFM
FoodService, HMSA and The
Shidler Group and their
guests – enjoyed table and
premium wine service under
the direction of Gary Manago
from Hilton Waikiki Beach
and Hawaii Foodbank
volunteers. Our outdoor VIP
section was expanded again,
which allowed many Hibiscus
VIP guests to purchase tables
and sit comfortably with their
groups to enjoy the cuisine
and music under a special tent.
Surprise and Hilton Hawaiian Village Pastry Chef
Amanda Anderson’s Kona sea salt cheesecake, and a
bold cold-brew coffee from illy.
VICE CHAIR
Noel Trainor
Throughout the evening, stages inside the warehouse and
outside under the Hibiscus Tent featured live
entertainment by multi-instrumentalist Jazzy Jay, the
talented Osorio ’Ohana, sultry folk
and soul singer Tahiti Rey, veteran
rock group WREKT, and young
indie rockers The Fresh Preps.
Carlsmith Ball LLP
The annual Silent Auction
featured many items, such as gift
certificates for culinary
experiences at venues like
Morimoto Waikiki, Orchids at
the Halekulani, and Michel’s at
the Colony Surf, cultural
experiences from places like Star
of Honolulu Cruises & Events,
Polynesian Cultural Center, and
Diamond Head Theatre, hotel
stays at Ala Moana Hotel and
Hilton Waikiki Beach, and
transit passes to ship vehicles to
the mainland from Pasha
Hawaii. The hottest bidding war
was again over a pair of Business
Class Tickets from our Travel
Sponsor United Airlines.
Guests chatted up local
celebrity chefs at restaurant
stations throughout the
warehouse and tasted
delicious creations like Roy’s
Hawaii Chef Lyndsey
Simone’s Japanese hamachi
crudo with petite seafood salsa and preserved
lemon, Mac 24/7 Chef James Aptakin’s Thai grilled
kalbi steak salad, and 12th Ave Grill Chef Kevin
Hanney’s Maui Rum and coconut braised Maui
Cattle Company Beef Cheeks with buttered taro
mash and Hauula Tomato relish. To complement the
cuisine, guests were served fine wines like the Honig
Cabernet from JMD Beverages and Ferrari-Carano
Chardonnay from Southern Wine & Spirits, craft
beers like Goose Island Summer Ale from AnheuserBusch and Samuel Adams Cold Snap from Paradise
Beverages, and updates on classic cocktails like
Joey Gottesman’s “Fashionably Great” with
Paniolo Whiskey. Cold refreshments like Hawaii
Sparkling Water from Menehune Water and
Sumatra Dragonfruit Antioxidant Infusion from Bai5
were also enjoyed. Guests finished up their culinary
experience with sweet samples like MW
Restaurants Chef Michelle Karr-Ueoka’s Dessert
The trend of the evening were the
colorful ribbons attached to house
keys on the necks of our guests all
night long. One lucky key would
unlock the Cellar Door and the
fantastic prize behind it: over five
cases of premium wines donated by
Fujioka’s Wine Times, JMD
Beverages – Wine Division of
Paradise Beverages, Johnson
Brothers of Hawaii, Southern
Wine & Spirits, and Young’s
Market Company of Hawaii. The
night ended in celebration when the lucky winner turned
her key in the Cellar Door lock and won over 60 bottles of
outstanding wine.

The Hawaii Foodbank – Kauai Branch held its
27th Annual Food Drive on Saturday, April
16, 2016. Our statewide effort was out in full
force with terrific volunteers, and this year
was especially a great success for Kauai—
exceeding last year’s total with $5,159.09
and 2,506 pounds collected! We would like
to thank all of the locations:
• Safeway – Kapa`a & Lihue
• KFC-Lihue
• Walmart
• Big Save- Koloa, Ele`ele, Waimea
• Princeville Foodland
St. Catherine Food Pantry has been involved
with Hawaii Foodbank-Kauai Branch for
about 6 years under the guidance of Mark
Whitson. The volunteers were at SafewayKapa`a on the rainy Saturday morning, and
many of them have attributed the success of
the program to Mark’s work as Operational
Manager of St. Catherine Food Pantry. Within
a week, an estimated number 350 people,
180 of which are children under the age of 18
are serviced with approximately 3,000
pounds of feed during operative days in the
food pantry. If they didn’t have Kauai Branch
to help them supply their food pantry
needs, Mark stated, “it would impact what
we do for the community greatly. It would
be difficult to feed these folks.” Eddie
Pickop informed that there are other
items that folks can donate to the Kauai
Branch that are overlooked essentials like
pet food, diapers, and other toiletries. Ann
Villanueva explains that “this is
community and fellowship for us, we
enjoy what we are doing. There is a core
group of us that set up on Tuesday and
distribute on Wednesday, and we look
forward to that.” Mark mentions that they
also receive fresh fruits and vegetables
from farmers on island.
Safeway-Lihue had Girl Scout Troop 823
with the direction of Troupe Leader,
Teresa Caires and leadership of Sheryl
Perreira and the young women of Na
Hoku O Kauai. They are empowered by
the skills they learn in Girl Scouts and
pageant participation. To these ladies
who are poised to do community service,
we say mahalo nui loa!
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS’
STAMP OUT HUNGER FOOD DRIVE
The Kauai Branch warehouse was filled with donations on May 14, 2016 for the 24th
annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Wes Perreira, Warehouse Supervisor
reported 13,198 pounds of food donation were collected this year, an 11% increase
from the previous year’s total of 11,927 pounds. Out of the 15 post offices, the stations
that had the greatest amount of donations were in Kapaa with 4,966 pounds.
Thank you to all of the participating letter carriers and post office staff for their

Juror’s Favorite & People’s Choice
awarded to: “Appetite for
CANstruction” by WATG 2015
Hunger affects thousands in our own community, and
significantly impacts the health of our planet. This
year’s Canstruction competition reaches beyond our
mission to end hunger from our microcosmic ohana in
Hawaii to a global movement into the infinite cosmos.
Our galactic theme combines the extraordinary feats of
science, technology and interstellar travel with the
unbounded imagination to “canstruct” our way to
worlds beyond our own universe. Teams within
Hawaii’s design and construction industry are
encouraged to rally around this year’s theme by using
their creativity and design skills to build structures that
reflect the universal pursuit of discovery, exploration,
and humanitarianism.
Your vote is needed! Visit Pearlridge Center, Uptown
from October 1 – 16 and vote for your favorite structure. ONE can = ONE vote; vote as
often as you wish. The structure with the most votes will win the People’s Choice to be
announced at the award ceremony on October 16. Together we CAN make a difference!

February 12, 2016 – The beautiful Hawaii Prince Golf Club
welcomed 48 teams to the 12th Annual Hawaii Foodbank Golf
Classic. It was a day of friendly competition over 18 challenging
holes to benefit the Hawaii Foodbank and help feed the hungry.
chances at the prizes by beating their rival at the ever popular
Crazy Croquet or Portuguese Horseshoe games. Our golfers were
kept cool on the course with adult refreshments courtesy of the
Miller Light and Coors Light ladies on their souped-up beer carts.
After checking in at 9:00 a.m., golfers grabbed fresh fruits donated
by Armstrong Produce and Dole Foods Company Hawaii, and
musubi donated by HFM FoodService before hitting the driving
range for last-minute coaching by golf professional Dave
Kowalczyk of Roger Dunn Golf Shops. The Bridgestone Golf
putting contest gave participants a chance to win OGIO "Layover"
Rolling Carry-Ons for their whole team before even setting foot on
the course. Everyone fueled up with lunch provided by Penske
Truck Rental & Leasing and Hawaii Foodservice Alliance.
At the end of the day, golfers gathered at the Bird of Paradise
Restaurant to join emcee Kimo Kahoano for delicious dinner and
prizes awarded by the lovely Chelsea Hardin, Miss Hawaii USA
2016, and Alyshia Shimizu, Miss Ultimate Elite 2016. Paul
Tomita from Angel Network Charities won the Early Bird Entry
Prize, golf for two at Makaha Valley, Olomana Links AND Royal
Hawaiian Golf Clubs with golf accessories from James D. Swoish.
Julie Miyagi on the Road Safety Services and Design team won the
putting contest. Winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin contest were Ron
Yamada, Cappy Capelouto, Del-Marc Fujita and Gary Villanueva,
and our four winners of the Greenies competition got to share in
the Greenie Pot! Team and Lucky Draw prizes included gift
certificates from hotels, restaurants and one-of-a-kind experiences.
At the 11:30 a.m. shot gun tee off, golfers were given golf balls
courtesy of Bridgestone Golf and HFM FoodService. Hawaii
Prince’s Daniel Abergas explained the rules of the 3-man
scramble, and emcee Kimo Kahoano started the tournament with
a blessing before sending the golfers off. They snacked on chips
from Frito Lay and James D. Swoish, Svenhard’s pastries from
Hawaii FoodService Alliance, candy bars from Advantage Webco
Hawaii and fresh-baked cookies from the DoubleTree by Hilton
Alana Waikiki, and enjoyed cold drinks from Coca-Cola Hawaii.
One the course, there was a hole-in-one opportunity sponsored by
New City Nissan to win a 2016 Nissan Altima, and three chances
to win pairs of tickets to Hawaii’s Premier Culinary Event, Great
Chefs® Fight Hunger. Golfers could win tickets by correctly
guessing “How Many Tees in the Foodbank Jar?” or they could get

MAHALO MESSAGE FROM THE COMMITTEE
“Next year’s NALC Food Drive will be marking its 25th year since its
inception. Even through economic hardships, the NALC continues to
be committed to customer service. It also continues to do more than
delivering the mail, the NALC Food Drive is one of its biggest efforts
to help feed America’s hungry. Every year we always hope to beat last
year’s total.” –Adele Yoshikawa.
“Thank you everyone for such a fine effort to raise over 500,000
pounds of food to feed Hawaii’s hungry this year. We truly appreciate
the tremendous support of the donors, sponsors, trucking providers,
volunteers, staff, and Hawaii State Association of Letter Carriers and
the USPS to help Stamp Out Hunger in Hawaii.”—Stan Markle,
Director of Product Resourcing, Hawaii Foodbank.

10 FEEDING OUR OHANA
April 15, 2016 – Mahalo nui loa to Cades Schutte LLP for your outstanding
generosity! On behalf of Cades Schutte, LLP Chief Operating Officer May Lee
shares some impactful words on giving and commmunity engagement: It’s not
just about making a financial donation—it’s about getting involved, and being
present in the community. We couldn't be more thankful for our ability to
donate over 3 tons, and more than $12,000 to the Hawaii Foodbank this year.
Over the past month our entire team came together to support one common
goal and make these donations possible. Cades' attorney Kelly LaPorte (right),
pictured here with Food Drive Manager Kim Bartenstein (left), sums it up
perfectly: “The Foodbank helps so many in our community, we are honored to
be able to contribute to their cause.”
AGENCY SPOTLIGHT
Partners in Development Foundation
For nearly two decades,
Partners in Development
Foundation has dedicated
their efforts deeply rooted in
traditional Hawaiian values
and practices to address
current affairs in ho‘ona‘auao
education, ahupua‘a in
environmental stewardship,
economic development and
community health. PDIF has
devised several programs
Members of Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana Staff
including Tūtū and Me and
Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana. The foundation’s first program
was established in 2001 as a free traveling preschool. It
has pioneered the fruition of Ka Pa‘alana Homeless
Family Education Program which works in partnerships
with agencies and the Hawaii Foodbank in the Leeward
coast. As a result of socio-economic conditions infused
with ‘ohana values, Grandparents or tūtū, are often the
primary caregivers of their young grandchildren. Today,
the effects of this program reaches hundreds of at-risk
children and their caregivers through a hands-on
curriculum provided in 28 communities throughout the
Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana at Waiamanalo Beach
state: six on O‘ahu, twelve on the Big
Island, four on Kaua‘i, two on Molokai
and four on Maui.
Another successful program of PIDF is
Nā Pono No Nā ‘Ohana, a
comprehensive family education
program. The program is located at
Blanche Pope Elementary School in
Waimanalo where the
parent/caregivers and their children
attend together in an environment that
nurtures learning and promotes
education beyond reading and writing. This implementation
of the ahupua‘a system provides a great way for adults to
have fun while learning, playing and socializing.
While there are observable variances in the practices of
Hawaiian traditions and western values, both share
overlapping core concepts such as pa‘ahana (righteousness),
kela (excellence), alaka‘i (leadership), and ku i ka ni‘o
(achievement). The difference is in their philosophy: Rather
than drawing attention to individual achievements,
Hawaiians practice these values by striving for excellence
through hard work for the benefit of the group.
“Partners in Development
Foundation inspires and equips
families and communities
for success and service,
using timeless Hawaiian
values and traditions.”

12 FEEDING OUR OHANA
Whew. That’s a lot. But there’s a
reason for it all—and we see it every
day in the eyes and the lives of the
people who need us.
We see the families who scrape
together the money they need for
rent and electricity… and food.
We see children who either are too
young to know how their parents
worry, or are old enough to wonder
where their next meal is coming
from.
elusive brass ring of security.
We see Germaya, an orphan, with her
sisters and her brothers. They look
out for each other but they accept the
help of Pastor Charlie Lorenz,
Executive Director of Feeding Hawaii
Together. It’s a non-profit agency
that provides food, but also clothes...
and books. That’s right, books.
I like that. Feed and clothe the body,
nourish the mind.
We see kupuna, aunties and uncles
who pinch their pennies, yet can’t
stretch fixed incomes enough to
make it to the end of the month.
When you become part of our Hawaii
Foodbank family, that’s exactly what
you’re doing. You’re helping us feed
bodies and minds, AND providing a
big helping of hope.
We see the homeless. We see those
who are just a step or two away from
homelessness.
Mahalo, once again, for choosing to
help the Hawaii Foodbank and, by
extension, our entire Hawaii ‘ohana.
