Message from the President of the Board
Each year, we take time to publicly thank those who contribute time or money to ACS. So many of our ACS community
contributors do both. We thank you because each name on the pages that follow represents a tremendous commitment
to each and every one of our students, a commitment that can actualize every aspect of an ACS education by
supporting our faculty and staff, our field trips, our athletic teams and our school-wide campus initiatives.
For those commitments, whether you gave five hours or five dollars, we say "Thank You!"
If it is not yet obvious from the sheer quantity of names contained in this report, we have a tremendous number of
people to thank. As I look back at the many years of this publication, it has grown steadily over the years, a wonderful
trend that speaks of increasing involvement.
As Hamilton Clark begins his tenure as headmaster, I can state quite confidently that even greater than the abundant
commitment of individuals in the ACS community is the impact that each of you has, and will continue to have, on the
lives of our students.
Thank you,

Message From the New Head of School In 2013-2014
It is my great pleasure to have the opportunity to follow Dr. George Damon, who has so ably led ACS for the last
decade. Our school is in a position of true strength, full of interested and capable students, and dedicated and inspiring
teachers. ACS is a beacon throughout this region for those who seek to educate their children in a community that
values critical thinking, open dialogue, rigorous academics, and respect for all. We have a reputation for empowering
students to solve problems with creativity and integrity, to lead well balanced lives, and to serve Lebanon and the world
community with understanding and compassion. We have an excellent academic program, our admissions are strong,
and our facilities are in good repair. Thanks to the generous support of so many alumni, parents, and friends, our
finances are steadily improving.
I hope very much that I will have the opportunity to meet with each of you as I begin my work at ACS. I am eager to
learn from you and hope that we can build on the partnership between constituencies that is the hallmark of great
schools around the world. It is the ongoing engagement, dialogue and mutual support amongst parents, past parents,
alumni, and those of us at school that will keep us strong. These relationships will assure that we serve the needs of
every child in our care.
I am grateful for your support for the Annual Fund, and for the growing awareness at ACS that tuition alone does
not pay the full cost of educating a student here. Yes, ACS is an expensive school, but even so, every child here is
subsidized to some degree. ACS is supported by gifts and grants that supplement our tuition. Last year, the gifts and
grants that we received totaled $1,314,688. Dividing that number by the 1,078 students that we enrolled last year gives
us an average subsidy of $1,220. My hope is that every parent who is able will pay their child’s tuition here, but also
voluntarily contribute as much of that $1,220 subsidy as they possibly can. ACS cannot do its best work without the
generosity of friends, families, and alumni whose support for the Annual Fund reflects their gratitude for the lessons
learned and experience gained at this school. Every gift is valued and assures that we can continue to build on the fine
reputation of our school.
We at ACS thank you for your strong support last year. This is a testament and sincere acknowledgement of the tireless
work of this community for the betterment of our school. I hope that as I get started, I will be able to count on your
continued financial assistance, as well as your time and talent given to ACS in so many different areas. I thank you for
all that you do for ACS, and look forward to getting to know you.
Thank you,
Hamilton Clark
Head of School

Message from the Former Headmaster in 2012-2013
Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of ACS:
In my tenth and last year at ACS, I applaud the growth in the annual fund which reflects your generous support,
understanding of what makes ACS a unique school, and recognition that each gift plays an important role. Indeed,
each gift allows ACS to bring educational experiences to students that engage, expand, and challenge them to be more
reflective, more confident people who express their ideas. Over the past ten years, the impact of the annual giving on
the operational budget has grown over tenfold, adding to the capacity of the school at all levels. This has allowed us to
add research-based new practices, support our faculty’s development, expand our outdoor programs, and continue the
renewal of our spaces.
For the second year in a row, the school opened with a record enrollment – 1078 students- thanks to your shared belief
in the school’s values, mission and educational philosophy. You are a very supportive community. You participate
in the annual giving campaign and engage in conversations that lend greater understanding to what your child is
experiencing. Your financial support translates into meaningful, positive impact on all of the students, regardless of
diploma type or age.
This year, as the school prepares to transition to a new head, your increased support is a vote of confidence in the
process that will bring a new and well qualified educator to the forefront of this dynamic educational community. As the
school continues to expand the student experience, I look to your continued support. I have faith in this appreciative
community to offer support for our future.
Annual giving is the most important way for the school to increase its capacity to meet the annual challenges of
providing the best education in Lebanon. I am honored to have shared this community with you for the last ten years,
and I look forward to visiting you and celebrating all that you are doing to keep the educational experience relevant for
your children.
Thank you, parents, alumni and friends of ACS.

School’s Ongoing Need for YOUR Support to the ACS Annual Fund
ACS has the following
priorities:
To sustain the high level of academic,
athletic and art programs, with
first-rate facilities for our
students;
To retain and recruit highly qualified
faculty and staff;
Cost of Providing an Exceptional Educational Experience in 2012-2013
In 2012-2013, tuition income only covered 80% of our school’s annual operating budget. A shortfall of 20%
is about $3,205 per student out of which $1,220 per student is covered from gifts and donations. For 1,078
students, the total shortfall comes to a total of around $ 3,454,495.
To sustain the school’s commitment to each student, we rely on the generosity of our supporters to bridge the
gap between tuition income and the actual cost of an ACS education.
To attract a talented and diverse
student body by providing needbased scholarship aid to talented
recipients.
In short, to meet these priorities,
we require more funding than we
receive every year through school
tuition.

In Memory of Jon Stacey ’61 *
(July 7, 1943 – December 7, 2012)
Thank you for your generosity to the ACS Annual Fund in memory of Jon Stacey ’61 *, longtime editor of the Diaspora
Potrezebie, AA/ACS Governor, and former president of the AA/ACS.
Jon worked tirelessly in the service of the AA/ACS. Among his many contributions, he edited the Alumni Newsletter,
the Diaspora Potrezebie, for 22 years, served on the AA/ACS Board of Governors for over 25 years, organized alumni
reunions and provided invaluable guidance to other reunion committees (in the process authoring a guidebook on reunion
planning), kept the association’s bylaws current, authored a history of ACS, and with his wife Lisa contributed generously
to the alumni association, the Malcolm Kerr Endowment Fund, the ACS Annual Fund, and many additional fundraising
efforts supporting ACS student activities.

ACS has dedicated the Chemistry Lab in honor of Jon Stacey ’61.
I am and always will be a member
of the ACS Class of 1961, a group
that became family and that shared
the truly exceptional experience of
living and to some extent growing
up in Beirut and at ACS. The ’61 is
my talisman. What I learned as a
member of the ’61 class gave me the
power to persevere and succeed.
