Message
from the President
As I look back on the past year, it is
hard not to feel so incredibly proud
of this community and the support
for Candlelighters of Brevard.
From our donors and volunteers
to our board and staff, it has been
amazing to watch the support of
this organization grow every single
year. This past year in particular
was incredible as I watched the
community rally around and
support our move to a much needed
new home. Led by the direction
and passion of Natasha and Adis, and the extremely generous
donation of time and talent from Steve Price (Steven W. Price
Construction), we saw businesses, individuals, contractors,
city officials, new volunteers, seasoned volunteers and so
many others come together to make this move happen for
our families. We now have our resale shop, storage, offices
and meeting space all under one roof. This new location has
already boosted our resale shop sales, but more importantly;
it has provided a location for our families to meet privately for
anything they need and a place to call home. A true heartfelt
thank you to everyone who made this possible!
In 2015 we welcomed 14 new families to our Candlelighters
family and we currently serve over 60 active families. With
no Pediatric Oncologists in Brevard our families drove
approximately 385,000 miles for treatment and spent over 1,000
days in overnight hospital stays. Sadly, four of our children
passed away last year. They will forever be in our hearts as
Candlelighters of Brevard angels. In 2014, the Board of Directors
and staff developed a strategic plan to ensure the long term
viability of Candlelighters of Brevard. Many of our initiatives
are currently in place and we are pleased with the results and
the direction we are headed. The Endowment Fund that we
established through the Community Foundation for Brevard has
already proven to be beneficial. Additionally, our newly launched
COB Volunteer Guild is attracting and retaining so many great
volunteers! Our signature, community and fundraising events
are all growing financially and are more popular than ever! All of
these efforts are needed so that the organization can meet all of
the growing needs of our families. Our mission remains the same
— we are committed to ensuring no families in Brevard will ever
have to face childhood cancer alone.
our angels… forever in our hearts.
Bryton Rose
“Petal”Saxon
JULY 8, 2009 – DECEMBER 30, 2015
Heaven gained a spunky, silly, crafty, amazingly beautiful
angel on December 30, 2015. Bryton Rose Saxon gained
her angel wings and began “meowing” for all who had
passed before her. She spread love and laughter to every
one who came near her. It was impossible to be in her
presence and not have a smile on your face. Even though
Bryton was only 6 years old she was wise beyond her
years. She taught her family, friends and caregivers
valuable lessons that will never be forgotten. She loved
God and wanted her loved ones left on this earth to have
“good days for the rest of their lives.”
Bryton Rose was diagnosed with AML in March of
2015 and went into heart failure as a result of the
chemotherapy in June of 2015. She was then placed
on a Berlin heart until she passed in December. Bryton
came in contact with many doctors, nurses, patients and
therapists during her stays at Nemours in Orlando and
Shands in Gainesville. She touched many lives while
living in the hospital and was told many times that each
life was enriched because of meeting her. To say she
was a shining star on earth was an understatement. Her
contagious laugh, sweet meows, funky style, silly jokes
and kind heart was only a small portion of what made
Bryton Rose Petal sparkle.
Our family thanks everyone who has supported us
during the last year and especially Candlelighters.
Without the love, support and prayers from everyone
our journey wouldn’t have been as possible.
We know that you have many choices when it comes to
spending your time and your dollars. For 26 years, we are
thankful that the community has supported Candlelighters of
Brevard. On behalf of the Board of Directors and executive staff,
we would like to say ‘THANK YOU!’ With your support we will
continue to help so many families when they need it most.
Because kids can’t fight cancer alone.

THE MAGIC OF
Christmas
During the season of giving, Candlelighters of Brevard gave
thanks to everyone that generously donated to the Christmas
Party & Adopt-A-Family Program. From individual donors
to local businesses, the support shown by our community
was deeply heartwarming. Parents and guardians were

moved to tears when picking up the countless gifts donated
to their entire family unit — including mom & dad!
To each donor, we give thanks to you for your spirit of giving

We had an amazing time with Candlelighters of Brevard at Andretti
Thrill Park. I have an amazing support system but there really is
something comforting being around other families that are on the same
kind of journey. Thank you God for the wonderful people you have
brought into our lives. I am so incredibly thankful.

Candlelighters would like to thank Ocean View Fitness for serving as the Presenting
Sponsor of the first ever Light the Night 5K benefiting our organization. Through the
leadership of Race Director and OVF owner, Joel Danford, over $6300 was raised to
help the children of Candlelighters of Brevard.
A huge salute to all of the sponsors, volunteers, race participants and vendors who
helped make this happen. It was the most exciting party / 5K on the Space Coast and
will be even better next year. Where else can you find a 5k with a big party on the
beach, dancing, bonfires, Hawaiian dancers and so much more? Through partnership
with OVF and Up & Running Race Management over 155 race participants registered
for this first time 5K event. Thank you Ocean View Fitness for your generous support of
our children battling cancer. This event truly provided hope and was able to “Light the
Night” for all.

Ribbon Cutting
Community, donors and friends gathered January
27th for our ribbon cutting ceremony at the new home
of the Candlelighters of Brevard. The ceremony was
hosted at our new Indialantic location and was part
of the Melbourne and Cocoa Chamber of Commerces
dedication process. More than 125 attendees took part
in the heartwarming ceremony and tour of our new
facility & resale shop.
“The move was made possible by the numerous
community partners led by Steven W. Price
Construction & Dale Sorensen Real Estate”, said Board
President Brendan McCarthy. The staff and board
were overwhelmed by the amount of support for the
Candlelighters, the only Brevard Charity that supports
children with cancer. “There are just too many people
to thank but we all are so appreciative to sponsors and
volunteers that laid hands on making this community
project possible. It has been a labor of love by so many
across Brevard County. “This space is dedicated to our
Candlelighter families; a place for them to call home.”
The ribbon cutting was ceremonial being
highlighted by a Candlelighter family sharing their
story of what the organization has meant to them.
Many other families, shop volunteers and friends
were in attendance at the new location which is not
only the office but offers a beautiful resale shop. All
donation dollars raised at the shop goes back into the
organization’s family services offered to local families
facing childhood cancer.

Thank You’s!
Sincere appreciation goes out to the Nelson family and employees of Brevard
County Hyundai Dealers. Each month their employees make generous donations
to underwrite the cost of this newsletter. In addition, the owners of BCHD serve
as major cash and in-kind sponsors of ALL signature events of Candlelighters
of Brevard. From their annual donation of a new Hyundai vehicle for Have a
Heart - to serving on our board & committees - to giving of their personal and
professional time, resources, funding and talents - the entire BCHD are true
stakeholders of COB providing us with every resource needed to grow and flourish
as an organization dedicated to children in their fight against childhood cancer.
Thank you Christy Busbey! This
Thirty One Senior Director donated
travel chemo comfort bags for our COB
children during treatment.
Thank you Jon Reyerson & CureSearch for
donating Ella Dolls! These dolls are designed
to empower girls that have lost their hair to
still feel beautiful and strong.
Yearly Indian River Furniture pairs with
Ekornes for a charity event. All Proceeds from the
event benefits Candlelighters of Brevard and The
American Cancer Society. Thank You IRF for the
$1750 donation and for always caring about our
kids and their families.
Gracious thank you to the FeedA-Family Foundation and their
donors for sponsoring COB families
for Thanksgiving. Full Thanksgiving
meals are provided for the entire family
unit to lessen the stress of the holiday
preparations and expenses. Thank you
Feed-A-Family!

Employees of Embraer Aircraft
Holding are asked to nominate a charity
of choice each year to receive a corporate
donation. This year, Candlelighters of
Brevard is honored to have been selected
as one of the non-profits as part of
Embraer’s Charity Partnership Program.
Christopher Curtis presented the check
to Candlelighters’ Executive Director,
Natasha Duran. The generous donation
in the amount of $1,250 will provide
financial assistance to over 65 COB active
families battling childhood cancer in
Brevard County. Embraer is committed to
continuously improving the quality of life
in the communities in which it operates
by focusing on community outreach. Serve for A Cure 2016 – Tennis Event
Special thanks to Ionie Murillo-Lane, Lito Guerrero and Karen Duguay for organizing
and sponsoring a tennis event to benefit COB. Through their efforts and the support of all
players/event participants and sponsors – a total donation of $812 was raised. COB Guild
Ambassadors, Kyle Graham and Donna Ramirez, proudly represented Candlelighters at this
great event. This was Ionie’s 10th year survival from breast cancer and it was an honor for her
to dedicate the funds raised in this event to Candlelighters of Brevard. Our congrats to Ionie
and thanks to all involved with this great event!

June 2016
Candlelighters of Brevard is honored to
be a finalist in FLORIDA TODAY’s 2015
Volunteer Recognition Awards under the
category of “Organization of the Year”.
Our sincere appreciation goes out to
the community for the support received
during this past year of continued growth
and development as we celebrated our
25th year of service. Our work is simply
a reflection of the love, compassion and
respect that we hold for our children
bravely battling cancer.
SpaceCoast Living magazine made a big
impact for COB when hosting their annual
“Season of Giving” Shop for a Cause campaign
during the holiday season. Candlelighters
of Brevard was selected as a recipient
for SpaceCoast Living magazine’s “Season
of Giving” Shop for a Cause. During the month of November, local retailers donated
a portion of their sales back to the 5 non-profit organizations selected. Participating
retailers included: Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Audi of Melbourne; Gregory Daniel Portrait
Artist; Genna Jewelers; Mica & Molly’s; and Michael’s Men Store. Over $2123 was raised
for Candlelighters through this campaign. Special thanks to Brandi Beckstein for her
leadership and support. Candlelighters of Brevard was humbled to be selected and
appreciates SpaceCoast Living magazine and all that donated during the “Season of Giving”.
Candlelighters of Brevard was moved to
tears at the check presentation / guild
meeting of The Seaside Piecemakers. A
generous check in the amount of $5,760
was gifted to Candlelighters of Brevard as
a result of donations raised at their 2016
Quilt Show. A beautiful, king-size quilt
named “American Beauty Rose” was raffled
in March - with all proceeds donated to
Candlelighters of Brevard. Special thanks to
all guild members, Quilt Show Co-Chairs,
event coordinators and attendees that made
the event a huge success. The art of quilting
is a magnificent gift and COB is honored
to have been a recipient of The Seaside
Piecemakers’ time, talent and treasures! Thank you Hannah Jefferson of
West Shore High School for choosing
Candlelighters as your charity organization
to become the recipients of your Senior
Project soccer tournament. Also, thank you
to Indialantic Youth Soccer Association for
hosting and supporting Hannah’s tournament
and to all the players who participated. All of
your efforts raised $1,000 for our families
battling childhood cancer. The employees of PIRTEK – Rockledge
location – are proud to support the
Candlelighters’ mission. They generously
donated $1,100 after personally seeing
the benefits our organization offers the
community. Thank you, PIRTEK.
Thank you TC Dance Club members,
Robin & Barry Sandland, and
friends. Their Spring Showcase was
held at the Hilton Melbourne Beach
Oceanfront and proceeds from
their ticket sales were donated to
Candlelighters. Amazingly a total of
$791.50 was raised! We are humbled
by the many years of support from
their showcases and their love for our
kids and their families.
June 2016
The members of the Merritt Island Rotary were
a tremendous asset to our organization in 2015. In
November, they hosted a charity event titled “Putting On
the Pink” to raise funds and awareness for Candlelighters
of Brevard. Under the leadership of Patricia Tash and
the members of this rotary, over $4,700 was donated
to Candlelighters. The Rotary of Merritt Island holds
civic engagement and community giving to the highest
standard. COB salutes and thanks all members of the
Merritt Island Rotary for being exceptional servant leaders,
civil servants and generous rotarians.
