spring 2016 - PRIZM Ensemble
NEWSLETTER SPRING 2016 MOVING TO THE MUSIC PRIZM collaborated with Ballet on Wheels and The Cordova High School Orchestra for a performance at Buckman Performing Arts Center in March. We plan to do another collaboration next year! FIRST IMPRESSIONS Carina Washington, Lecolion Washington, Daniel Gilbert, and Dan Phillips held a workshop for students at Collierville High School and taught the importance of bowing, rehearsal etiquette, and stage presence. It was a great afternoon! DIVERSITY, OPPORTUNITY, & ACCESS I first became acquainted with the PRIZM Ensemble through the youth development aspect of their mission, when my daughter Lindsey participated in the 2013 PRIZM International Chamber Music Festival. Little did I know what impact our family’s choice of summer camps for Lindsey that year would have, not only on her as a musician, but on all of us with regards to our connection with the arts in Memphis, with individuals from numerous walks of life across Memphis, and on our view of ourselves as part of a diverse community. I have spoken with many of the students involved in our programs, as well as our long-time supporters in Memphis, and know that my family is not the only one that has been enriched through the work of the PRIZM Ensemble. The students participating in the OMusic Project at Orange Mound Outreach Ministries recently staged an exposition that demonstrates the alignment between PRIZM Ensemble programs and our mission (To build diverse community through chamber music performance, education, and youth development). These students had rotated through small-group lessons on the drums, flute, clarinet, and piano. This program is providing the very first opportunity to many of the participating students to play classical instruments. The enthusiasm was infectious as the students proudly demonstrated their new skills, with some students mastering the first skill of making a sound using the mouthpiece and barrel of a clarinet, and another playing a scale (after only three short lessons!). The skills displayed were clearly at a different level than those many of you see displayed by our Summer Camp and Chamber Music Festival Alumni, but no one can grow their musical talents without an initial exposure to music and an opportunity to learn. I am proud to be a part of an organization that impacts students across the entire spectrum of musical skill levels, while building confidence, poise, and a sense of community. Abby Parrill-Baker Chair, PRIZM Board of Directors ALUMNI Lorem Ipsum Dolor Issue [#] :: [Date] WHAT MUSIC MAKING MEANS TO ME Aaron Olguin is an alumnus of the PRIZM Music Camp & International Chamber Music Festival (2011). After participating in the PRIZM festival, Olguin went on to a variety of other music festivals and music competitions. He even started his own chamber music group called Bassinova Quartet. “To answer the question, “what music making means to me”, has always been extremely difficult to answer. At the moment it means a number of things to me; light, strength, creativity, having a voice. I have always driven myself to push the double bass into a different light: one that allows for its soloistic and beautiful voice to be heard. When I began this journey, it was a lot of work because I had to publicize the performance aspect of the bass and create awareness. But what evolved the most along the way was me realizing how music making effect me, and others. It is now my passion not to just push the bass as an instrument into the limelight, but to push my inner voice and my musical ideas along with it as well. A great cellist once told me that he heard bass virtuoso Joel Aaron Olguin is majoring in music at The University of North Texas where he was the winner of the 2014-2015 UNT Concerto Competition and named principal of the Concert Orchestra at North Texas. Olguin (middle) performing at The PRIZM Music Camp and International Chamber Music Festival in 2011. Olguin (far left) celebrating after the final festival concert with fellow students and his double bass professor, Jeff Bradetich (far right). “Music making will always be my passion. Given the right opportunities such as those provided at PRIZM, one can make music by seeking to express what he or she have inside.” Quarrington perform Shubert’s Arpeggione Sonata (written for cello) and was moved more by that performance than any other performance he had heard of that piece. Not because it was performed on bass, but because he performed music by Shubert. This message struck me like lightning. I realized that our inner voice can find its shape through the arts through whatever medium we have available. At festivals like PRIZM we focus on intimate music making and share our music making capabilities in a very human way. Music making will always be my passion. Given the right opportunities such as those provided at PRIZM, one can make music by seeking to express what he or she has inside.” Aaron is a Texan from The Colony, Texas. His music studies began at age eight on guitar in Brownsville, Texas. During middle school, he was introduced to the double bass. In his high school years, Aaron preceded to study with Gudrun Raschen at the Double Bass Conservatory rd of Dallas at Dallas Strings where he was ranked 3 in the state at the Texas All-State convention. Aaron has attended at a number of prestigious music festivals such as the UNT Double Bass master classes hosted by Jeff Bradetich, The PRIZM CMF in Memphis, Tennessee, ICMC Chamber Music Festival in Positano, Italy, Idyllwild Music Festival in California, and the Mittenwald Double Bass Master Class in Germany. He was also a finalist in the Fort-Worth Young Artist Competition his senior year of high school. At the beginning of his studies at the University of North Texas, Aaron was named principal of the Concert Orchestra and was granted two competitive music scholarships. He was later selected as the double bassist for the Fantasmi Early Music Ensemble tour, which lead to performances througout Germany, Austria, and Croatia in 2014. Aaron was the winner for the 2014-2015 UNT Concerto Competition and the senior division for double bass at the ASTA International Competition. He is also a two-year semi-finalist at the Sphinx Concerto Competition where he received honorable mention. He currently studies with the world-renowned double bassist Jeff Bradetich. 2 = EDUCATION Lorem Ipsum Dolor Issue [#] :: [Date] “Many of the students at OMOM look up to me, I am their role model.” JOSHUA LEAKS OMUSIC COORDINATOR Joshua Leaks is from The Historic Orange Mound Community of Memphis, TN. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2011, and is now working at Waffle House and at the Orange Mound Outreach Ministries. Leaks has been attending OMOM since age six and is now giving back to the community he grew up in. Leaks works as youth pastor, conducts leadership classes, peforms as a musician, and is the OMusic Coordinator for The OMusic Project since December 2015. Leaks manages the attendance for OMusic along with many other duties. His primary goal is to help the young people succeed, and keep them out of trouble. He wants to help prevent the kids from getting involved in drugs, gangs, and violence. Do you want to support PRIZM? Although we keep the tuition for the Festival and Summer Music Camp down to $350 to maximize accessibility for more students, the real cost of attendance at the festival is approximately $700 per student. That means we need to make up the difference through private and corporate donations. PRIZM has never turned away a student based on finical considerations. In addition, PRIZM’s after school (OMusic) and in school (PRIZM in the schools) programs are offered free of charge. ”Please help us maintain this track record by considering a donation today. The OMusic Project is on its second year at Orange Mound Outreach Ministries (OMOM). This spring, children ages 7-14 have participated in groupclasses in flute, clarinet, bassoon, violin, and trumpet. Classes in guitar, drums, keyboard, and music production have continued from last year. Most children that attend OMOM have no access to other music education, and have never played or even seen many of the classical instruments before. The goals for the OMusic Project are to provide access and create opportunity for the children. “The kids ask me every day with hopeful eyes: Are the musicians coming today?” says OMusic Coordinator Joshua Leaks. Joshua, 19, has been attending OMOM since he was was six years old. He “The OMusic Project is really important to the He is now assisting OMOM’s Director and kids. They talk all the time about what they and Founder learned in the music classes.” Reverend Tucker, and and since December 2015 he works every week as the OMusic Coordinator. Duties include taking attendance, making sure the groups are full each week, taking photos, etc. “The OMusic Project is really important for the kids. They talk all the time about what they learned in the music classes”. Joshua also assists when the children go on field trips that PRIZM arranges. Most recently to the Randall Goosby benefit concert at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church in March. PRIZM believes that in addition to the hands-on music experience, the students highly benefit from attending concerts and other events while experiencing other areas of Memphis. PRIZM arranges transportation and a meal for the students attending. Many of the children rarely get the chance to see other parts of the city without field trips such as those through the OMusic Project. The students often ask “When are we going on the next trip?” when we come to teach or visit, letting us know they treasure it. Currently only available in the spring, PRIZM and partner organizations Orange Mound Outreach Ministries and Visible Community Music School (VCMS) are looking into the possibility of of extending the OMusic Project by making group instrumental classes available in the fall semester as well. Funding for the extension is not yet secured.
