Kylee Foster LJHS Circuit Rider May 2013 Cinco De Mayo History of Cinco de Mayo: Battle of Puebla In 1861 the liberal Mexican Benito Juárez (1806-1872) became president of a country in financial ruin, and he was forced to default on his debts to European governments. In response, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew, but France, ruled by Napoleon III (1808-1873), decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of Mexican territory. Late in 1861, a well-armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and driving President Juárez and his government into retreat. Certain that success would come swiftly, 6,000 French troops under General Charles Latrille de Lorencez (1814-1892) set out to attack Puebla de Los Angeles, a small town in east-central Mexico. From his new headquarters in the north, Juárez rounded up a rag-tag force of 2,000 loyal men—many of them either indigenous Mexicans or of mixed ancestry—and sent them to Puebla. Led by Texasborn General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829-1862), the vastly outnumbered and poorly supplied Mexicans fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On May 5, 1862, Lorencez drew his army, well provisioned and supported by heavy artillery, before the city of Puebla and led an assault from the north. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening, and when the French finally retreated they had lost nearly 500 soldiers. Fewer than 100 Mexicans had been killed in the clash. Although not a major strategic win in the overall war against the French, Zaragoza's success at Puebla represented a great symbolic victory for the Mexican government and bolstered the resistance movement. Six years later—thanks in part to military support and political pressure from the United States, which was finally in a position to aid its besieged neighbor after the end of the Civil War—France withdrew. The same year, Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, who had been installed as emperor of Mexico by Napoleon in 1864, was captured and executed by Juárez's forces. Puebla de Los Angeles was renamed for General Zaragoza, who died of typhoid fever months after his historic triumph there. Cinco de Mayo in Mexico Within Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is primarily observed in the state of Puebla, where Zaragoza’s unlikely triumph occurred, although other parts of the country also take part in the celebration. Traditions include military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla and other festive events. For many Mexicans, however, May 5 is a day like any other: It is not a federal holiday, so offices, banks and stores remain open. Cinco de Mayo in the United States In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is widely interpreted as a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with substantial Mexican-American populations. Chicano activists raised awareness of the holiday in the 1960s, in part because they identified with the victory of indigenous Mexicans over European invaders during the Battle of Puebla. Today, revelers mark the occasion with parades, parties, mariachi music, Mexican folk dancing and traditional foods such as tacos and mole poblano. Some of the largest festivals are held in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. Kylee Foster LJHS Circuit Rider May 2013 Would You Rather? Would you rather watch LOST or The Office? It affects the nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spine and then to other muscles in the body. ALS is when these motor neurons die. The story starts during a Boarding-An-Enemy-Ship Lesson. Gobber explains to his students that they will practice on the easy target of a Peaceable fishing boat. Gobber warns his students not to leave the bay, or else they might have an encounter with Sharkworms. Snotlout and Dogsbreath ram their ship at Hiccup and Fishlegs' ship (known as the Hopeful Puffin) and the ship loses course and they get lost. Fishlegs cannot see through the fog, and mistakes a Roman ship for a Peaceable Fishing boat by accident, and is attacked by the Romans. While on board, Hiccup finds two men (known as the Fat Consul and the Thin Prefect) talking about how they will steal all the dragons in the Inner Isle by kidnapping the Heirs of the Bog-Burglar Tribes and the Hooligans, causing both Tribes to fight, letting the Romans steal all the dragons in the Inner Isles. The story continues with the boys (and others) try numerous times to escape the Romans and save the dragons. Excerpt “Just as the sound of the bugle died away, the fog lifted, for a second giving a glimpse of the entire bay. Over to the right, further toward the gray outline of the Peaceable Country, there were the shadowy shapes of four or five Peaceable fishing boats, surrounded by clouds of screeching Blackbacked Seadragons. ‘Over there!’ yelled Sharpknife and Tuffnut Junior, turning their boat, The Raven. ‘It’s all under control, Fishlegs!’ shouted Hiccup excitedly. ’I can see where we’re going!’ Hiccup yanked the rudder of The Hopeful Puffin so sharply that Fishlegs lost his balance and fell face-first into the water at the bottom of the boat.” Review Though the series is aimed at young children and preteens, I think people of any age would enjoy its curious plots, light humor, and imaginative twists and answers to every problem that Hiccup, the Hero of the story, faces on a daily basis. I really enjoyed reading this book, and the rest of the series. The humor was light with a fair amount of gross-out humor and some slight crude humor thrown in to amuse an older crowd. I also found it quite comical the situations Hiccup found himself in that in reality, are not funny at all. Cowell weaves a wonderfully entertaining story that provides laughs and giggles, but also has heart and you just can’t help but love the flawed but endearing Vikings of Berk. It’s hard to tell with Mother Nature's indecisiveness. Taurus (April 20 — May 20) With this month comes the end of school and the beginning of summer vacation….The only the problem is having to wait until summer gets here. I hate waiting. Gemini (May 21 — June 20) Are you looking forward to summer break? Kind of a rhetorical question, now that I think of it... Cancer (June 21 — July 22) Get ready for warmer weather, cloudless days, and best of all, no school. Oh, and sunburn. Don’t forget sunburn. Leo (July 23 — August 22) They say Leos are born lucky...well, I hope if you are a Leo, you’re lucky enough not to get sunburned this summer. Virgo (August 23 — September 22) Be sure to spend time with your friends this summer. Believe me, they will remember if you forget them. Libra (September 23 — October 22) Libras are said to be hopeless romantics. I’m not sure if this true, but don’t be disappointed if all you have to remember the summer of 2013 is a sunburn like everyone else. Scorpio (October 23 — November 21) Aren’t you happy we don’t have homework over summer break? If we did, I totally forgot. Sagittarius (November 22 — December 21) Sagittarians are known to be busy workers and have frequent burnouts. If you’re a Sagittarian, be sure to relax and enjoy summer while it lasts. Or spend it dreading the upcoming school year. Whichever you prefer. Capricorn (December 22 — January 19) Those born under Capricorn are said to secretly want to be proud of their achievements. Why not take summer break to do something you can be proud of? And no, I don’t mean beating your high score in your favorite video game. Aquarius (January 20 — February 18) Aquarians are thought to be unique and original individuals. What better time to discover who you are than over the summer? No one likes a copycat. Pisces (February 19 — March 21) People born under Pisces are told to be very indecisive. So, should you listen to this horoscope or not?
