Welcome Back!
School is in at Knollwood! We are excited to have your children at
Knollwood. It promises to be a fun and productive year with lots of
learning and making friends. Open House was an exciting event for
parents and teachers and students alike, and we thank everyone
who was able to attend.
This year, Knollwood kicks off the Parents’ Council, a new version of
our wonderful parents’ volunteer organization. If you are interested
in helping out at the school, fund-raising, or showing appreciation
for our wonderful teachers, please let Chris or Candy know in the
office, or show up for our Parents’ Council meeting at 11:30 on
September 15. Even if you cannot attend the meeting, we would
still love for you to volunteer in the future!

What is the Parents’ Council?
The Parents’ Council is a group of parents who will meet with Chris Norman and Candy Moxley (the Director and Assistant Director) once per month to discuss issues pertaining to the
school. It is open to anyone who has a child at KBCP.
What does the Parents’ Council do?
The Parents’ Council will help organize and execute fund-raisers, provide feedback for Chris
and Candy, and show teacher appreciation. Regular meeting attendees will help recruit and
organize volunteers for school events such as Teacher Appreciation Week and Spring Fling.
Why should I join the Parents’ Council?
Joining is a great way to be more involved at the school. It’s fun to work
on the events, and

First Week of School We had a wonderful first
week of school! There were a few tears from
families and children but overall it was great.
New Staff Members We are pleased to
welcome two new staff members to our
school!
Jenny Stauffer will be the lead teacher in
the M/W/Th Two Year Class. Jenny will work
with Denise Sturkie. Jenny has two children.
Molly is four and presently in Zo Beaty’s and
Ruth Mathis’s class. Mary Stuart has started
Kindergarten this year. She moved to WinstonSalem from Charlotte in May 09, where she
taught in a half day preschool. We welcome
Jenny to our staff.

Newsletter
Security Code I have assigned each family
a security code. It is 0 + the last four digits of
the mom’s or primary caregiver’s cell phone
number. If you are a returning family and have
changed your cell number please let me know
if you want to change your code.
Please remember that our building has an
alarm, so if school is closed and/or you do
not see cars in parking lot then assume the
building is alarmed.
Scholastic Book Fair Thank you so much
for your participation in the book fair. Our
teachers are so grateful for the wonderful
books you purchased and donated, and it was
a great fund-raiser for our school.
Celia DiGiovanni is another new staff member
this year. Celia will be the Associate Teacher in
the Young Toddler Class working with Marla
Andrews. Celia moved to Winston-Salem from
New York State in 2006. She is active in her
church and as a Girl Scout leader.

Scholastic Book Orders
Wrapping Paper Fund-Raiser
We hope you enjoyed the book fair and
got some wonderful goodies for your child
and maybe your child’s teachers! We will
be sending Scholastic order forms home
throughout the year, so be on the lookout.
Scholastic books make great Christmas gifts!
The Innisbrook wrapping paper fund-raiser
starts Monday, September 13. Innisbrook is
a LOCAL company (located in Greensboro)
and they make great wrapping paper.
Watch for the catalog to come home in the
next few weeks.
Morning Munchies
Link Your Harris Teeter VIC Card
Morning Munchies is Tuesday, October
5 and Wednesday, October 6 at 8:30
each morning. If you are a parent or other
caregiver who brings a child to Knollwood,
come to school early and enjoy muffins and
orange juice with your child and meet other
Knollwood families. Gather in the dining
room on the north side of the building.
Box Tops
Collecting Box Tops for Education is an easy
way to raise money for Knollwood! Box tops
are on many products. Go to http://www.
boxtops4education.com/AboutBoxTops/
Products.aspx# for a list. For a fun activity
with your child, help him or her find box tops
at the store, and then let your child do the
cutting, put the box tops in a baggie, and seal
it. (These activities provide extra fine motor
practice.) Write your child’s and teacher’s
names on the baggie, and send them in with
your child. Thanks to those who collected
over the summer. The class with the most
Box Tops gets an age-appropriate party! 4
Even if you did it last year, it is time to
relink your VIC card to Knollwood again.
The cards reset every year. Tell a cashier
you want to relink, or go to the Harris
Teeter website and link to Knollwood using
code #3962. Have kids at two schools? You
can link to more than one school! We made
hundreds of dollars last year with very
few parents actually linking their cards, so
please don’t forget to link up with Knollwood!
Photo Sculptures
A photo sculpture—a picture of your child
made into a “statue,” magnet, ornament,
etc.—is a great gift or keepsake. (Watch for
the display coming soon to the lobby.) Mark
your calendars to have your child’s picture
taken for photo sculptures. Pictures will be
taken Wednesday, October 13 through
Saturday, October 16 from 9:00 am–12:00

Money Thoughtfully Spent
The KBCP faculty appreciate your efforts
with our fund-raisers in the 2009–2010
school year. Here is how your dollars have
been spent this summer to get us started in
our new school year!
• New Die Cuts: if you don’t know what a
die cut is, you will see these paper shapes
used as car tags, name tags, and bulletin
board decorations. We also use die cuts
to improve math and literacy skills,
fine and gross motor skills, and socialemotional skills. Remember the T-shirts
from the spring program last year? These
were made with die cuts.
• New Ball Pits: Ball pits help very young
children master many things, like math
skills, colors, gross motor skills, and
social-emotional growth—a child builds
up confidence to sit away from his
preschool teacher as he sits in the ball
pit and learns to socialize with friends.
Since there are now separate rooms for
babies and young toddlers, we definitely
needed more ball pits!
• Shelving: In addition to much-needed
storage, shelves help teach children
sharing and independence as they learn
to help themselves to toys and put them
away without an adult’s help. Placing
toys in the correct spaces (identified
with pictures and sometimes words)
teaches matching and one-to-one
correspondence—an important math
skill.
• Changing Table: When child is changed
promptly and in a clean environment, she
learns that caregivers will take care of her
basic needs.
• Toddler Chairs and Bean Bag Chairs: Childsized chairs teach independence and
confidence, since they can sit down without
the help of an adult. Chairs help build social
skills, because children love to sit beside
their friends. Child-sized chairs also offer
space for private time.
• Kitchen Set: This crucial dramatic play
equipment builds creativity as children
act out situations that they see in their
daily lives. Dramatic play develops socialemotional maturity as well as math,
language, and literacy skills.
• Wall Mirror with Handle: Infants and
toddlers love to hold the handle as they
pull up to stand. As they pull up to see their
reflections in the mirror and move away
from a caregiver to play, they develop more
social and emotional independence.
• Art Supplies: We needed construction
paper, beads, wiggly eyes, paint, brushes,
bulletin board paper, glue, pipe cleaners,
etc. Art supplies help children acquire
cognitive skills (matching, sorting, and
dimensional design), literacy, fine motor
skills, creativity, social/emotional skills, and
literacy. Every learning skill and subject can
be reinforced through art.

Knollwood Nights Are Back!
Thanks, Color Carpets!
This year, we are partnering with the Thruway Chick-fil-A to do a Knollwood fund-raiser on the third Monday of each month. Just
tell your cashier you are from Knollwood
Baptist Church Preschool, and who your
teacher is, and a percentage of the cost of
your meal gets donated to our school. The
class with the most participants gets a nugget party!
Thanks to Color Carpets for their generous
donation of carpet squares for the music
room! Our kids appreciate it!
Family Fun Things to Do in September

All-A-Flutter Family Days (Saturdays at 10:00 and 3:00 and Sundays at 2:00, through October 9)
Visit our local butterfly farm for a butterfly presentation and butterfly feeding. Kits with eggs or
caterpillars are available for at-home release until October 9. The farm’s address is 7850-B Clinard Farm Road in High Point—about a 25-minute drive from Winston-Salem.
Kersey Valley “Maize Adventure” (Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00–6:00)
Take the kids on a corny adventure. Starting September 4, and continuing every Saturday and
Sunday through November 7, you can navigate the corn maze. Doggy friends are welcome,
too. They also have a zipline tour and usually sponsor other spooky events in the fall. The
Kersey Valley Corn Maze is located at 1615 Kersey Valley Road, High Point, NC 27263.
Bethabara Apple Festival (Saturday, September 18 from 10:30–4:30)
Historic Bethabara Park, at 2147 Bethabara Road, Winston Salem, NC 27106, will hold its
annual apple festival, featuring wagon rides, crafts displays, and local orchards.
