What to expect:
What will my recovery be like?
The care you receive after
your surgery or procedure
is very important to your
recovery and may even
impact the final aesthetic
result. Your surgeon will
likely be very involved in
this recovery phase and
has probably developed specific protocols to ensure the
best possible recovery for you.
One way your doctor may choose to make you more
comfortable during the recovery process might be to
recommend wearing a carefully designed compression
garment. If your surgeon has chosen to use general
anesthesia during the surgery, you may wake up wearing
one of these garments, especially following a liposuction,
tummy tuck, breast, buttock, thigh, face or upper arm
lift, among other possible procedures.
Why would I want to wear a
compression garment?
Following your procedure you may
be surprised by how much you will
prefer having compression evenly
distributed across the affected
surgical area. Why? Swelling!
Here is what happens. Even though
the incisions look small, your surgerical procedure
affected a lot of tissue beneath your skin. Though hidden,
the result is trauma to an area that your body begins
to heal. While this reconstruction is occurring, building
materials will travel to the repair zone. Extra blood,
lymph and fluids trying to make their way to the affected
area combined show up as swelling. This swelling or
“edema”, could slow down your body’s healing process
and cause you discomfort. Many surgeons have found
through experience that compression garments aid in
controlling and reducing edema while also making you
more comfortable.

How long will I wear my garment?
Your surgeon will determine how long you
should wear compression garments. The
length of time will vary by type and extent
of the procedure and by your surgeon’s
personal, time-tested protocols. Generally
speaking, compression wear is used 24
hours a day, 7 days a week for several
weeks. As garments are worn and get soiled, you should
have a second garment to wear while the other is being
washed.
How can I wear the same garment for
such a long time?
Anyone who has ever worn a cast, brace or compression
stocking knows that it is difficult to wear the same thing
all day for weeks on end. Due to the extended wear time,
it is very important to look for compression garments
made out of the most comfortable, scientifically developed
compression fabric you can find. Over the course of weeks
of wear, the garment’s fabric becomes paramount and can
make you comfortable or miserable. Seven key qualities
you should look for are:
1. More Stretch, More Power – the best compression
fabrics have lots of stretch and recovery power
provided by their Elastene, Spandex or LYCRA®
content.
2. Softness – soft fabric is more comfortable.
3. Durability – the garment should last the entire length
of your recovery without losing its shape.
4. Cool and Dry – it should move perspiration away
from your body so it can evaporate quickly, helping
you stay drier and more comfortable.
5. Anti-microbial – inhibiting the growth of bacteria,
mold and mildew keeps the fabric clean and fresh.
6. Sun Protection – UPF 50 rated
7. Irritant Free– Latex, silicone and formaldehyde free

What are these zippers and hookand-eyes all about?
Following your surgical procedure,
the compression garment that your
surgeon prescribes may very well
have zippers and/or hook-and eye
closures (also called a ‘stage 1’
garment). Garments with zippers,
and particularly zippers with padded
hook-and-eye closures underneath
to protect the skin, are specifically
designed to be easy to put on both
on the operating room table and in
your daily life during the first stage of
recovery.
Can I get zipperless garments?
After the first couple of weeks, and
perhaps earlier, you and your doctor
may feel that you no longer need
zippers in order to put your garment on.
At this point, you are ready for ‘stage 2’
garments that are zipperless. In some
cases you may be a size smaller and
will need to re-measure.
The
advantages
of
zipperless
garments are numerous. They offer the
same medical-grade compression as
Stage 1 garments, but they are easier
to sleep in, are more fashionable under
form-fitting clothing, and will likely feel
more like “normal” undergarments as you begin to enjoy
some of your regular daily activities. ‘Stage 3’ garments,
like Marena’s ShapzMe™ Shapewear and Athletics8™
activewear, are zipperless with closed crotches and
can be worn daily to take advantage of the benefits that
compression can provide.

You may be given a recommendation to have two or
more post-operative compression garments. Most
compression garments require hand washing and air
drying, a time-consuming process. Therefore, it just
makes sense to have two garments; you can take your
time washing one while you wear the other for maximum
comfort and healing benefits.
How do I care for my garment?
To preserve the special qualities
of ComfortWeave®, follow these
laundering instructions:
Hand wash in cool/cold water.
Use gentle soap. Only air dry.
Do not iron. Do not use bleach
or fabric softener, as these may
harm the stretch, antimicrobial
and moisture handling properties of this fabric. Do not
dry clean. To minimize bloodstains, wash as soon as
possible. A pre-soaking solution of a tablespoon of
hydrogen peroxide in a gallon of water may help remove
blood stains.

• Slide each arm into the arm holes.
