13 took part in a special event at
Easingwold School to raise awareness
of the wide variety of careers available
in the construction industry. Organised
by Pam Lee, Education Officer of
Construction Skills (the construction
industry’s training body), the activity
day provided an opportunity for girls to
spend the day working with female
architects, engineers, surveyors,
project managers and planners on a
number of challenges.

Easingwold Netball Club
Mixed Results!
Easingwold B have now also
completed their last 2 matches this
season but their fate still hangs in the
balance.
NFU provided the first test.
Easingwold were in buoyant mood and
took the initiative from the start,
playing some excellent netball. The
score steadily increased and by the
last quarter the result was secured.
Easingwold were able to relax and
enjoy the final 15 mins as they ran out
comfortable 35-25 winners.
Next up Scarborough were the
visitors to the Galtres and we looked
forward to the visit of the runnaway
division leaders with some trepidation.
It proved unfounded however as the
home team put up one of there most
creditable performances of the
season. Throughout the first half we
matched out guests and never allowed
them to dominate, much to their
frustration. They did however start to
pull away a bit in the second half and
eventually Scarborough won 42-30,
but not without knowing they had
been in a match!
Second and third places in the
league are so tight that we are now
sweating on results from elsewhere to
see if we have secured another
promotion or just missed out!

Dan Smith was Huby’s star man in
an otherwise drab match.
Stepping in for Skipper Jonny
Thomas-Durrant he had an excellent
game in the middle of defence along
with Wayne Howell.
Huby will feel that this was two
points dropped, and their promotion
push took a slight setback, as they
could have gone level second in the
2nd Division if they had won.
Moor Lane themselves were early
season pacesetters, but they showed
why they have slipped up in recent
games.
Both defences were on top
throughout the game, and it looked as
if it was going to peter out into a 0 0
bore draw.
Instead both teams managed to
conjure up a late 1-1 bore draw!!
With 12 minutes to go, Moor Lane
scored an unlikely goal via their
substitute.
This spurred Huby into action and
they laid siege to the Lane goal. Why
couldn’t they do it for the previous 80
minutes?
From one of several corners, Simon
Wilson finally hit the jackpot, when his
kick was dummied by sub Jimmy
Turton, and there was Rich Durrant to
pop the ball into the net.

Sunday 2nd March Home
Stillington fielded a strong team
against Olympics the York University
team.
The match was an end to end, drama
filled game. Olympics fought hard in
the first half and tempers began to
fray. The umpire, John Moss quickly
nipped this in the bud and the game
resumed at the previous pace.
Stillington had a few near misses in
the first half but the score remained nil
nil at half time. In the second half the
play was just as exciting but Olympics
managed to score one goal in the last
ten minutes.

The weather was cold and wet and
both teams set off pretty evenly but
with Stillington fighting hard we
conceded two goals by half time and
three more by the end of the match.
It was a hard but enjoyable game
against a stronger team, good
experience for our many younger
players who are still at school.

The 16 players who made it through
the howling gale, enjoyed a closefought contest in which 16 boards
were completed in under 2 hours (the
bossy TD was back, with a
vengeance). The evening was marked
not only by the closeness in the
resulting scores, but in the
improvement in confidence and
courage of two longstanding and one
new member: Geoff Rowson, Davina
Hudson and Amanda Cooper. In the
end, Barbara Twigg and Weland Stone
triumphed North/South (57%) with
Kate Robinson and Barbara Smith in
second place (55%). East/West
winners were Jackie and Paul
McDonald (60%) with Geoffrey
Rowson and Kath Russon in second
place (58%). We can’t promise a
following wind, but a warm welcome
awaits bridge players of intermediate
standard or above in our cosy
pavilion.

Association and The Alzheimer’s
Society jointly hosted an afternoon tea
at Springhill Court on Tuesday 26
February.
The occasion was attended by
approximately 50 clients giving
everyone an ideal opportunity to meet
with each other in an informal setting.
The focus of the afternoon was to
give all who attended an enjoyable
time and to sample the variety of
mouth-watering home made cakes
and scones freshly prepared by the
Restaurant Manager and her staff. All
in all, it was a most pleasurable
occasion and we look forward to
hosting another one in June to

Our March meeting was chaired by
Jean Macrae as the president was
away. Reminders of the various
classes for the Group Show were read
out and we were urged to enter even if
it is a first attempt. A meeting was
planned to finalise the co-operative
entry, which is non-competitive but
challenging none the less. The show
will be in Shipton Village hall in April
and is always a good opportunity to
meet our friends from the other
villages.
Helpers were recruited for the village
hall jumble sale last Saturday.
Marion Roberts expressed gratitude
to 0everyone for the help and support
given at her coffee morning when
£175 was raised towards the
production of the Parish Newsletter
which is distributed free to the whole
Parish and keeps us all in touch with
local events.

Forest Lane. There is a large amount
of litter emanating from the site,
spread over a wide area, also
unpleasant smells both of which under
the terms of the licence should not be
happening. Julie gave us the
telephone number of the Environment
Agency and asked us as individuals to
report to them any problems coming
from the site. This is an opportunity
for us to do something practical to
protect our rural environment.

Dear Sir
May I say how good it was to read in
your popular weekly paper about the
commencement of work at the Galtres
Centre. The sports side of the plans
are really excellent and how fortunate
our sports people in Easingwold and
District are to have such a modern and
much needed facility in their vicinity.
Of course, once there is a larger
entertainment hall and better
acoustics, who knows who may
consider a venue in North Yorkshire,
and Easingwold in particular? We’d
settle for Take That, wouldn’t we
ladies?!? While reading of this much
needed Sport and Social Facility, I had
a sick thought; supposing, just
supposing, instead of this healthy
enterprise, we could be campaigning
against having one of the “ultra smart”
must have casinos.
I rest my case.

Mothers’ Union
The Mothers’ Union met in the
Parish Rooms, when a large number
of friends braved the rather unpleasant
weather to attend. After being greeted
by Ann Harrison, Branch Leader, the
evening began with an Act of Worship
led by one of our members.
After receiving some apologies, the
meeting dealt expeditiously with
certain items of business, including
details of several future events in the
area, which required those interested
to sign up. Ann then introduced our
Speaker, Sister Margaret Ann of the
Community of St Peter of Horbury,
who is an Art Therapist.
We had all been intrigued by the
equipment spread out on a table –
paints, brushes and paper. Sister
Margaret gave a short introduction
and we then divided up into several
small groups. She gave each small
group a sheet of instructions under
different headings. Each group started
by reading aloud its own particular
bible reading, and we were asked to
interpret its meaning to us by using
paint equipment to create a pictorial
image. Much talk and activity
followed, and some amazingly artistic
impressions were created. Each group
then explained their work to the rest of
the meeting.
It was a very different evening for
most of us, and it was quite obvious
that it had entailed some quite deep
thinking. Then, as we all relaxed, tea
and biscuits were handed round.
The Town travelled to second place
Riccall and despite a disastrous start
to the game came away with a hard
earned point. With R. Henley injured
and A. Ross unavailable. J. Hunter
was handed his first team full debut
and G. Raper was recalled to the
Town’s midfield. The hosts came
flying out of the blocks and took the
lead inside two minutes when a
midfielder runner skipped round B.
Pearson and M. Coulson with ease
and was eventually brought down in
the area under L. Garnham’s
challenge. Riccall’s veteran striker
blasted the spot kick straight down the
middle to give the hosts the lead.
Defensively this was a dreadful goal to
concede. To make matters worse,
Riccall extended their lead a minute
later when Cook controlled a back
pass from R. Wadsworth and his
attempted clearance was charged
down by the centre forward, the ball
struck him and rolled into the empty
net. With the Town two nil down and
only three minutes on the clock a
heavy defeat looked in store as the
hosts bombarded Town’s back line in a
fifteen minute spell of pressure.
Having weathered the storm the Town
started to come back into the game.
They had a goal wrongly chalked off
for off side when A. Metcalfe (Jnr)
outpaced the opposition defence to
fire home, and J. Banks had two
efforts blocked in a goal-mouth
scramble.
The second half started once again
with Riccall having the better of the
opening exchanges, but Town started
to grow in confidence. G. Raper had
two great chances to pull a goal back,
firstly rounding the keeper when sent
clear only for the centre back to make
a last ditch tackle, and secondly when
making a deep run into the box he was
inches away from converting a cross 6
yards out that in the end flashed
inches wide. With the Town pressing
forward Riccall hit them on the break
and the centre forward hit the bar from
the edge of the box when sent clear.
With fifteen minutes remaining A.
Metcalfe (Jnr) pulled a goal back with
a well taken finish and R. Wadsworth
had a good chance to equalise when
he side footed an effort straight at the
keeper. By this point Hunter and
Baudouin had swapped wings and
both were getting joy out of their full
backs. The former beat his man at the
by-line and as he went to pull a cross
back he was pulled to the ground for a
penalty. With only two minutes left on
the clock A. Metcalfe (Jnr) converted
the penalty despite the keeper going
the right way. That should have been
the end of the drama and as the clock
ran down J. Hunter cleared a corner
off the line and A. Metclafe (Jnr) was
sent clear of the defence only for the
referee to blow for full time. The hosts
were incensed at throwing the game
away and surrounded the referee at
the end of the game and a flurry of
yellow cards followed.
In the end this was a great point for
the young side and they showed a lot
of character to come back from two nil
down inside three minutes, away at
the team second in the table. G. Raper
and R. Wadsworth narrowly beat A.
Metcalfe (Jnr) to the Man of the Match
award for their hard work against a
useful midfield but Metcalfe took his
two goals very well. The Town face a
different challenge next week when
they travel to bottom club Heslington,
who despite their lowly position won
6-2 last week, so this will not be a
straight forward fixture

The Enemy – This song is about you
Without any of the ambiguity offered
by Carly Simon’s ‘You’re so Vain’, this
track offers the same possibility of
great success. Similar to their
previous song in its drive and
distinctively colloquial style vocal, the
track appeals to a wide audience in its
uncomplicated, accessible melody.
The track, though interesting,
pushes few boundaries in its
structure. A bare accompaniment of
drums, guitar and bass are pretty
unimaginative and it seems to lack
excitement. A good listen, but not
groundbreaking.
Vincent Vincent and the Villains –
Gospel Bombs
An excellent album, though not what
I initially expected. Those of you
expecting harmonised, swaying
gospel will be sorely disappointed, but
those looking for something quirkily
different, fast moving and excellently
put together need look no further. My
father (who refuses to acknowledge
any music released after the 1970s)
was equally impressed after his first
listen. Jazzy guitar chords, surging
drum beats and catchy vocals create a
fascinatingly fresh album that will still
impress after many plays. Don’t be
perturbed by the finger clicking;
smooth voices, a blend of upbeat and
slower pieces perfectly complement
each other. Pay particular attention to
track 9 – Sweet Girlfriend, granting the
same pleasure as chocolate – a smile!

Although it was a blustery wet
evening we had a good turn out of
members and guests for Miss L.M.
Helliwell’s talk on ‘Bats and
Conservation’. It was fascinating to
learn a little more about some of our
native bats but sad to hear that many
are under threat. She had brought
along three different types of bat in her
care, which gave us the opportunity to
see them close up, something we
would not normally get the chance to
do. It was surprising to see how small
they were when their wings were
folded. She also told us a little about
the work being done by ‘The Bat
Conservation Trust’ to protect some of
the endangered species.
We finished the evening with
refreshments as usual.
During the business part of the
meeting before our speaker arrived,
we discussed the arrangements for
the Spring Show at Shipton in April.
Next month we are going to learn
about ‘Things that go bump in the
night!’ with local resident Robert Hall
giving the talk.

As is now fast becoming a local
tradition, members of local parishes
including St Michaels, Tollerton and
Tholthorpe Methodists walked from
Tholthorpe down to Myton on Swale
church for a communion service.
The weather was kind if chilly and
the walkers soon kept warm by
processing the distance to Myton,
stopping halfway for prayers at the
edge of a nearby field. Our leader
commented that reading in the North
Yorkshire countryside had indeed not
been part of his training! But at least
the traffic was sparse and the only
other competing sounds were those
from nearby sheep!
Good Fellowship (and also good
conversation!) was very apparent
during the walk with most people
finding time to meet and talk to
everyone else whilst still reflecting on
the day and its relevance. Children
played I spy and spot the tree while
enjoying the open air.
Ladies from Myton helped the
walkers to recover by a presenting a
wonderful table of hot drinks and
chocolate biscuits (yes, real chocolate
ones!) and fruit cake! Many thanks to
all involved for this lovely gesture.
The service was led by Rev. Roy
Wadsworth who announced that the
St Michaels along with Alne, Myton
etc have at long last found a new
pastor, who will be starting in his “new
patch” in the near future.
There were even some stalwarts that
remained in Myton after the Service
for the picnic by the famous iron
bridge on the banks of the River
Swale.

Under 15s Hit a Great 8
changed that, as his firmly struck
cross was diverted into the net by one
of the home side defenders. The own
goal scorer was inconsolable and
made the decision to drop out of his
defensive roll and take up a position in
goal. Arran soon capitalised, prodding
home from around 12 yards. But
Easingwold were still less than
convincing and went in with the score
at just 2 – 0 at the break.
With just a few inspirational words
still fresh in the player’s minds, we
came out after the interval and
delivered a much more convincing
display. James Hopkins started the
second half goal spree, powering in a
header after a good delivery by
Mathew Goddard from a corner.
Farquhar then added a second to his
tally; his shot from the edge of the
area taking a deflection, leaving the
keeper stranded, and ending up in the
back of the net. Hopkins’ consistent
hard work down the flank was at last
rewarded as he struck again, leaving
both he and Arran with two goals
apiece. That was by no means the end
of the match though; some clumsy
Ulleskelf defending inside their own
box resulted in a penalty. With two
players on hat-trick, there was a short
debate as to who should take the spot
kick. In the end Farquhar stepped up
and converted confidently, sending the
opposition number one the wrong
way.
Soon after, Oliver Everard was in
amongst the goals. The ball dropped
to him around twenty yards out, and
with great agility he took the ball
down, swerved and fired away a shot.
A mixture of swerve and wind
deceived the keeper and left the ball to
fly into the roof of the net.
Unfortunately, James Hopkins didn’t
net his third in the end, but Arran
Farquhar succeeded in notching a
fourth, his predatory instincts allowing
him to follow up on a well saved effort
from Goddard.
A late goal from the home side did
little to overshadow a good team
performance; the final result 8 – 1.

Ulleskelf Town prepared to play
Easingwold having just come off the
back of their best result of the season,
that result being a 4 – 1 defeat; an
achievement in comparison to the 21
– 0 humbling they had received only
weeks earlier. We were expecting to
beat them, and comfortably at that.
The teams were psyched up, the
managers were yelling final words of
instruction to their respective teams,
and the referee prepared to blow his
whistle. It was then that he realised he
did not in fact have a whistle, nor was
there one at hand.
Thankfully – ten cold and confusing
minutes later – the game did begin,
with Easingwold creating early
opportunities through Arran Farquhar
and Mathew Goddard. Yet, the game
was not as straight forward as many
had anticipated, and stand-in keeper,
Tom Butcher, saved well from a wind
assisted Ulleskelf strike. A more than
questionable refereeing decision saw
Ulleskelf enforce more pressure with
an indirect free kick inside the Town
penalty area after a back pass, and a
sense of urgency began to overcome
the players as after around 15 minutes
we had still not succeeded in breaking
the deadlock. However, Arran soon

Crime and Punishment was the
theme of our well attended March
meeting. Our President Elizabeth
Clifford introduced Mr. Malcolm
Smith, who is a York Magistrate. He
began by encouraging us to help him
compile a list of crimes in order of
their severity, which prompted some
debate. He then gave us each a printout, based on an actual case, which
after reading we had to decide what
punishment we felt was appropriate.
Mr. Smith then told us what the
Magistrate’s decision had been. This
generated a lively exchange of ideas,
highlighting some of the difficulties for
those who have to administer the law,
and reminded us that Magistrates are
unpaid. Val Illingsworth expressed
our gratitude.
On WI matters, exhibits for the
Galtres Show are in hand to be held on
Sat. 12th at Shipton Community Hall.
Jane Pierce will be delegate at
Scarborough Council Meeting, and
our newsletter listed a Spring of
coming events. After a stimulating
evening Maureen and Catherine

Palm Sunday Procession
On Palm Sunday, March 16th, an ecumenical service was held in Easingwold
Market Place. The service was complemented by a reading, Others on the Way,
which related the Easter story from the point of view of those who experienced
the original events.
Following this, the congregation, accompanied by two donkeys, progressed to
the Methodist Church for a further service and readings.

District Scouts
The Forest of Galtres District held a
grand Swimming Gala at Thirsk
Swimming Baths on Sunday 9th of
April. Beavers, Cubs & Scouts all took
part in a number of different and
exciting events based very loosely on
(a) water, (b) moving from one end to
the other and (c) doing this before the
other teams did.
Boys, from Easingwold, Kyle Valley
and Moxby Moor troops took part and
aimed to take the trophy and hold their
heads up high! But once started, most
forgot about winning and just enjoyed
themselves in an afternoon of fun, fun
and more fun.
Backwards relays, “pushing a log”
and doing a swimming dance called
“the locomotion” created laughs and
cheers from those looking on. It didn’t
matter if you were a Beaver, Cub or a
Scout – you were taking part and that
was the important bit.
In the end though, it was a very
close thing with Easingwold coming
out as victors with Moxby Moor and
Kyle Valley coming in (very) close
behind.
For those who want to join in the
fun, the answer is easy, don’t delay –

Reflections Sport Relief 24 Treadmill Challenge
To mark the Q Hotels sport relief
Challenge,
the
annual
charity
fundraiser, all 26 Reflections Leisure
Clubs across the whole of Q Hotels took
part in a 24 hour ‘Treadmill-a-thon’, in
an attempt to raise as much money for
Sport Relief as possible. All the money
we raised will be given to Sport Relief
and will help change the lives of
vulnerable people, living incredibly
tough lives, both here in the U.K., and
across some of the world’s poorest
countries.
The Challenge
The aim of our challenge was to
complete a sponsored 24 hour run or walk, with designated time slots for each
participant. Participants could run or walk for as long or as little time as they
wished, with a minimum of 15 minutes each.
The challenge took place on March 14th and 15th. The total distance covered
in the 24 hours was 210 KM. The calories burned was 13200 and we raised £390.

On Wednesday 5th March, we met at
the Grey Village Hall. Our President,
Barbara Jacobs, welcomed 35
members.
Minutes of February’s meeting were
read and approved. A letter of
gratitude for flowers from Edna Rigby
was read.
Other Matters: A of appreciation
from Central Committee for the
flowers in York Minster for the YCA
Service. Our outing to the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park in May.
Our Pudding Event in July is to go
ahead. More arrangements to be
discussed at future meetings. We are
sending letters to former members to
invite them to come and share a meal
to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Our
next meeting in April in the Grey
Village Hall is to be an open meeting.
We are inviting Members of the YCA
and WI of local branches and
husbands and friends, to hear David
Price, from Wath, give a colourful and
entertaining talk on “Dentistry in Rural
India”. A donation of £2 is requested
and there will be refreshments and a
raffle.
Barbara then introduced Angela
Mason to talk about ‘Wheels off the
Bus’. With colourful slides Angela told
us of a pact she made with a fellow
student to take a trip in a bus which
was to take two years, from London to
Kathmandu in Nepal.
The large orange and white doubledecker bus was to be their home. The
top deck had bunks with very little
room for any clothes or belongings.
The lower deck was the kitchen with
places to sit and eat. They met in
London, seventeen in all and the bus
driver. An unfortunate start began with
the bus needing a push to get it going.
Then on to Calais, missing Paris, then
Monte Carlo, Venice, Yugoslavia,
Turkey, Istanbul, Jordan, Syria, Iran,
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir and
finally to Nepal. Sometimes cold, hot,
very hot, lots of flies, no fresh food in
some places. Burst tyres, the bus
broke down and took two days to
repair. Had to shower, wash and clean
clothes in pools, pond and rivers.
Tummy upsets and frightened when
shots were fired. They had the lot, but
thankfully arrived safely. All this
happened some time ago and in a
different world to what it is today.
Allison kitchen gave a vote of
appreciation and Susan Morgan and
Elly Franklin served refreshments.
ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE AT THE GALTRES!
Work has now started on the new
sports hall at the rear of the Galtres
Centre, Easingwold, scheduled for
completion about July; and then the
conversion to an entertainment centre
of the existing leisure hall will
commence about June and be ready
for October.
Firstly, a word about the new
entertainment venue.
Like all facilities at the Galtres, it is
for community use, and that is the
vision that will enable so many
societies and groups to hire the hall
for suitable events, making use of
modern
lighting
and
sound,
permanent stage, tiered, comfortable,
retractable seating, acoustic ceiling,
better heating and films shows, a
centre we can be proud of!
Wow! What a difference to our
current arrangements!
Music,
drama,
dance,
demonstrations, meetings, courses,
training in the arts for young and old,
exhibitions, talks, hiring for corporate
events - the opportunities are endless.
With the introduction of these
facilities, it will allow the events that
the Galtres Centre have presented in
the past to be widened, to increase the
range in the new entertainment centre.
The Galtres entertainments has gone
from strength to strength, and to
ensure this success continues, the
Centre has to widen its range for the
future and arrange even more events
for the community to enjoy.
That is our plan, but it will need
volunteers to support these events,
not being involved at every event, but
joining a pool of volunteers who will
be available on a rota system to be
ushers, ‘meeters and greeters’, and
get involved in the planning and
administration of events.
If you like meeting people, want to
be associated with a successful
facility, have some spare time and like
to get involved with practical help in
planning and arranging events, then
think about attending a meeting later
in the year when the building is nearer
completion, to discuss what is
involved.

OBITUARY
Geoff Richardson MBE
1931 – 2008
Geoff was born at The Green,
Raskelf and lived there until he joined
the Royal Navy. He met his late wife
Dorothy and they married in 1952 at
Raskelf Parish Church. They had two
girls, Suzanne and Andrea, and for a
while lived at the Emporium (now the
Co-op) in the Market Place “opening
all hours” to serve the people of
Easingwold. Upon leaving the
Emporium, they moved to Long Street
to run a sweet and tobacconist shop
known as Richardson’s (now Purdys),
again “open all hours. Geoff also had
an ice-cream van and milk and coal
round. Geoff always found the time in
his busy life to help people out when
they needed it. Easingwold and it’s
people were very dear to Geoff’s heart.
He was involved in many
organisations too numerous to
mention. He served on the Town
Council, Hambleton District Council;
he was a founder member of the
Galtres Centre where he was Licensee
for a number of years. He was a
member of the Easingwold Branch
Royal British Legion and the local
Poppy Appeal Organiser for many
years. Geoff was also a member of the
Benevolents, a group of people who
fund-raised for many local worthy
causes over many years by holding
dances, BBQs, Garden Fetes and the
May Day Fair which is still going
strong at the present day.
He and Dorothy were keen ballroom
dancers in their younger days and
taught both their daughters at a very
early age the art of “old fashioned
dancing”. Even though Geoff was a
‘big man’, he was very nimble on his
feet and they could be spotted at many
local dances.
Geoff retired at an early age due to
health problems and he became well
known among the Car Boot Sales
Circuit. He had a keen eye for a
bargain and went on to buy and sell
many things for local charities. Geoff
was a cricket enthusiast from an early
age and supported Easingwold Cricket
Club at every home match. He will be
sadly missed at “his spot” at the side
of the pitch. After losing Dorothy he
could be seen early mornings at
Towler’s Corner on his electric buggy,
meeting the locals to catch up on local
news and putting the world to rights.
His proudest moment had to be
travelling down to London with close
family members to receive his MBE
medal for service to the community
from Her Majesty the Queen. His
family were his pride and joy and
when speaking about them he always
had a twinkle in his eye. He was utterly
devastated at the loss of his dear Wife
Dorothy, but sheer determination
helped him overcome his loss for a
short while for the sake of his
treasured family.
He was a big man with an even
bigger heart, God Bless Him. R.I.P.
Geoff’s funeral was held at St. John’s
Easingwold on Monday 10th March. A
guard of honour by Easingwold
Cricket Club lined the path as the
coffin entered the church draped in the
Geoff receiving his MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2000
Union Jack and floral tributes from
family and friends and a poppy wreath
from the Royal British Legion. The
service was led by Reverend John
Harrison to a large congregation who
gathered to pay their last respects to
Geoff. Readings and tributes were
read by long standing friends Keith
Craig and Geoff Ellis. The organist was
Mr. Alf Boddison.

GALTRES CENTRE ENTERTAINMENT
THE FUREYS AND
LITTLE BIG HORN
Last week, on Thursday and
Saturday respectively, in the Galtres
Centre, the Fureys and Little Big Horn
provided a feast of excellent music,
both in different styles.
The Fureys and Davey Arthur. Since
the announcement last summer, of
their appearance, there has been
steady booking for Ireland’s premier
folk group, and on the night it was
‘houseful’ with many of their fans
travelling long distances to see them.
And they were not disappointed, the
group are first class musicians and
singers and performed superbly,
treating the audience to hit after hit
from their thirty years of being
together.
Davey Arthur is an astounding banjo
player, mesmerising his audience with
true wizardry of the instrument, and
coupled with the songs of the Fureys,
it was a truly memorable night.
Emotional songs, funny ones,
poignant ones, all containing lovely
lines reflecting the joy of life like ‘will
you dance with me for the rest of your
life’, and all their favourites including
Irene Goodnight, When You were
Sweet Sixteen, Red Rose café, Steal
Away, and sentimental songs like My
Old Man and Today.
Over two hours of superb
entertainment, and they had the
audience clapping and cheering with
the rhythms of Ireland complete with
banjo and accordion to get the feet
tapping.
The Fureys and Davey Arthur were
starting a UK tour taking in forty
theatres in three months, but everyone
on leaving the Galtres centre was
looking forward to their next visit
already. A different kind of music was
heard last Saturday when the Little Big
Horn played in the lounge, consisting
of organ/keyboards, rhythm guitar,
bass guitar, trumpet, saxophone,
drums, and Clive Murray, vocalist and
funny link man for the evening.
Their repertoire were hits in the style
of rhythm and blues and soul, and
they were a very accomplished group
of musicians, providing the audience
with lots of toe tapping tunes to enjoy,
from some of Van Morrison’s hits
including
‘Moondance’,
‘Green
Onions’ by Booker T and the MG’s, a
rousing ‘Dancing in the Street’,
‘Minnie the Moocha’, with audience
participation, Joe Cocker songs,
‘Unchain My heart’, and BB King
numbers.
The striking backing music to ‘Give
me Some Loving’ was excellent,
giving a full brass and driving
accompaniment, ‘Barefooting’, and
‘Freight Train’ also featured members
of the group.
Too many tunes to list, the evening
proved to be most enjoyable, with the
audience appreciating the brilliant
musicianship of the seven on stage,
and cries of ‘well done Little Big Horn’
- the sound level just right!
The next event at the Galtres Centre
is on, Friday, April 4th when a drama
company from Leeds will provide an
hilarious evening of Shakespeare’s
plays, all done in 97 minutes, in a way
not seen before, ‘Hamlet’ performed
backwards,
‘Titus
Andronicus’
transformed
into
a
cookery
programme, and ‘Othello’ in a rap
song.
No wonder this show ran for over
twelve years in the West End, a good,
funny way, to learn about
Shakespeare.

The final show before work starts on
the conversion of the current leisure
hall into an entertainment centre is the
brilliant tribute band to Queen. The
Saturday show, April 19th has now
sold out, but tickets are available for
the Sunday show, April 20th at

Sutton and Huby
Gardening Club
Our last meeting last month was
about “Plant Hunting in Nepal”. A
surprising number of the audience had
been there but no-one had the
extensive experience of our speaker,
Michael Pearson who has been a
regular visitor over the last 17 years.
His spends a lot of time working with
a Canadian charity ‘Nepal School
Projects’ erecting village schools
there. If a school is built, the
government provides the teacher and
the upkeep. In addition, the charity
provides sanitation and convenient
water supplies to the village. Amazing
how much time a few kilometres of
polythene pipe and a decent filtration
plant can save the locals, not to
mention how much it reduces the
incidence of disease. All the charity’s
funds are spent directly in the area
buying building materials with nothing
going via possibly sticky ‘official’
hands. Horticulture was the main
theme of the talk though, with slides
of the indigenous species, many of
which Michael has been raising from
seed here in Yorkshire. I suppose it’s
obvious but generally, the smaller the
alpine the higher up the mountains the
plant grows, which gives clues as to
the sort of microclimate the plant
needs to flourish. Despite the high
rainfall, the drainage is very sharp
–unlike much of our own Peak
District! Of the 3000 or so saxifrages,
quite a few grow there, but we saw
much more. I especially liked the great
variety of miniature azaleas and the
multiplicity of orchids. Azaleas en
masse are wonderful. A couple of
weeks ago I saw 200 in pots, all the
same variety, massed in the entrance
hall of an hotel in an out of the way
place in China and was bowled over. I
doubt if many English hotels could
afford a display as magnificent!
This month, we are still thinking
away from home, but just 200 miles
away this time, when Peter Mathers
will talk about “London Squares and
Gardens” in the Village Hall, at Sutton,
not Huby as given in the membership
card.
Labour Candidate
praises Budget

Labour’s
Prospective Parliamentary Candidate
for Thirsk & Malton, has expressed his
delight that this year’s budget was
specifically designed to support
elderly people.
From April this year, increases in the
age-related tax allowances will take
600,000 pensioners out of tax.
The Government is also increasing
the Pension Credit standard minimum
guarantee to £124 for a single person,
and £189 for a couple in a bid to
continue fighting pensioner poverty.
And because keeping warm is vital
for pensioners across the Vale of York,
the Budget announced extra one-off
payments of £50 for households with
someone over 60 (meaning a payment
this year of £250) and £100 extra for
households with someone over 80
(meaning a payment of £400). Locally,
this means 22,860 people across the
Vale of York will receive increased help
with fuel bills.
Jonathan said: “Having met with 20
or so local elderly residents in recent
weeks, I wrote to the Chancellor
expressing concerns that the rising
price of fuel would have an impact on
the elderly. I am delighted that he has
moved to ensure they remain
protected against the cold.
“You get into politics because you
want to listen and learn from people,
and that is what I am trying to do. I
hope the people I spoke to will be
pleased.
These moves are in addition to
recent policies of offering free
prescriptions, TV licences and bus
travel to the elderly.
Making the Grade
At the Spring Grading held by the Vale of York T’ai Chi Qigong Association, two
candidates presented themselves for examination. Both Rosemary Walmsley and
Pat Tearall demonstrated great poise and calm and achieved their blue and yellow
sashes respectively. T’ai Chi Qigong is a gentle, health-promoting exercise
suitable for all ages and abilities which can help improve balance, mood and
mobility. The group is based in Thirsk and holds regular classes and meetings
throughout the year suitable for all ages and abilities both here and in Easingwold.
