Can I Borrow A Hammer?
Start Of A Seattle Tool Network
With the PNA Tool Library currently
celebrating its 35th anniversary, we’re
always a little surprised when some
people still stare at us quizzically and ask
“what the heck is a tool library?” In many ways, our little program
has been a bit of a neighborhood secret all these years, highlighted occasionally by the Seattle press but more
frequently just going quietly about its
business, supplying neighbors with the
tools and education they need to take
on projects, explore new skills, and
save a couple dollars in the process.
Much to our surprise, though, those
humble years of reliable community
service have recently helped to inspire a
whole new wave a tool libraries throughout our city, our region and even the
entire country. In fact, Seattle now has
tool libraries in West Seattle and Northeast Seattle, with projects starting up
in Ballard, Capitol Hill, Beacon Hill and
through a couple of farm co-ops as well. Where once the PNA Tool Library
stood alone, it now seems poised to become an exciting part of a burgeoning
tool library network. An initial celebration of this network
is currently on show as part of the Buster Simpson exhibit at the Frye Art Gal-

Neighbors Are Banding Together To Build Incredible Communities
By Lee Harper
As I write this, the annual Night Out
(first Tues in August) just happened.
Although my block doesn’t host a block
party, every year I feel a massive sense
of community as I wander through
PhinneyWood. Dozens of block parties (and hundreds more!) bring out
neighbors to play and eat and dance in
the street.
You would think the executive director of a community organization like
PNA would be motivated to get a party
going on my block. But I haven’t yet,
and instead visit others.
I recently met with some neighbors
who have built incredible communities on 4th Ave NW and 6th Ave NW,
between 62nd and 65th. I am on 5th
Ave NW, so I am a bit envious, but the
neighbors assured me that our street is
always invited. Jackie Houston and Nicole Bradford have taken over the reins
of the monthly potlucks on 6th Ave NW
and the 10th annual “Bangin’ Block
Party” held in July. Bands. BBQ. Beer.
Barbarian Noodle Wars (think pool
noodles), cream pie jousting, a bouncy
house and a zip line.
And I was able to walk to 6th by cutting through Jackie and Nicole’s backyards, which have become one ever
since the fence blew down in a windstorm several years ago. I felt like I was
taking a secret passage way – wandering past the sunflowers and artichokes,
getting distracted by the chicken co-

housing, then the kiddie pool and play
structure, past the Spam sculpture table
to arrive at the block party. Nicole said
it all started with neighbor Tony (now
living in Olympia). His southern roots
and hospitality became the catalyst for
building community. He pulled everyone from their houses to start eating
together. Carol and June jumped in and
pulled people together for birthdays
and new babies and weddings. Marriages have happened after people met
at the block party.
I was fascinated by the “Idea Dump”
at the block party, encouraging neighbors
to talk about what they want to see.
Overwhelmingly neighbors wanted to see
more community gathering spaces, parks,
garden collectives, cultivated green spaces. Although Tony, Carol and June have
all moved away, the sense of community
and connectedness remains strong.
One of my backyard neighbors,
Margaret White, took some time out of
her day running the education programs
at the zoo to talk about the 4th Ave NW
community. Her nametag (kids love it!)
says “The Big Cheese.” She admits to be-
ing an introvert (I don’t see it at all…) but
when she moved into the neighborhood
14 years ago, she decided to reach out to
her neighbors. There were a lot of families with small children, and they began
to connect and get to know each other.
She remembers one day coming
home from the store, exhausted, with
her son in tow. A neighbor walked
over, whisked her son away without a
word and Margaret was able to head
inside and cook dinner. When she was
done, Margaret watched the kids while
her neighbor cooked dinner. Potlucks
became a regular occurrence. A babysitting co-op was started. Neighbors
Chris and Christine got a trampoline a
few summers ago. I hear the squeak of
springs and the squeals of laughter a
LOT during the summer months.
Years later, an annual pumpkin carving party happened in Margaret’s basement and an outdoor Easter egg hunt
too. In the summer, there are monthly
block parties plus the annual Night Out.
The bands are often recruited right from
neighbors living on the block, changing
over time as people come and go.
Margaret’s advice to anyone wanting
to dip their toes into building community is simple: Start small. Don’t give up.
And have fun! Someone needs to spearhead, why not you? Street permits are
free – think about closing your street
and invite the neighbors out.
Maybe next year there will be a
block party on my block too!

Pig Out To End Hunger
Recently, the PhinneyWood neighborhood has become a bit of a foodie
haven. Lots of new eateries, pubs,
coffee shops. Hardly a neighborhood
where you could go hungry. And yet,
people do.
Since 1998, the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) has been feeding low-income, disabled and elderly
neighbors through its Hot Meal Program. Three days a week, every week,
the program serves 150 – 200 meals for
an annual total of about 22,000 meals.
Grants from the City, dedicated
volunteers and donated food take care
of a large percentage of the cost of this
program but not all of it.
To make up the difference, the
PNA is hosting the annual Phabulous
PhinneyWood Pig Out on Wednesday,
Oct. 9. This year’s event will include 31
neighborhood restaurants, pubs and
coffee shops who have all agreed to
donate a portion of their sales that day
to the Hot Meal Program.
To make this effort successful – and a
win/win for the program AND the businesses – we also need YOU. Neighborhood residents are urged to “Pig Out”
all day long – breakfast, lunch, drinks,
dinner, dessert and coffee after that. Eat
early and eat often. It’s as simple as that.
The Pig Out event, which last year
raised more than $5,000 for the hot
meal kitchens, is the perfect excuse to
sample the variety of PhinneyWood’s
“phabulous” eateries.
You may need an antacid at the end
of the day but it’s all for a good cause
so invite your friends and neighbors to
join you.
Participating restaurants this year include 418 Public House, 74th Street Ale
House, A La Mode Pies, The Angry Beaver, Baranof Restaurant, Barking Dog
Ale House, Bluebird Microcreamery,
Blue Glass Restaurant, Diggity Dog, El
Chupacabra, Fresh Flours, Gainsbourg,
In the Red Wine Bar, Kalbi Grill Express,

Grape, Oliver’s Twist, Pete’s Egg Nest,
Phinney market Pub, Prost!, Red Mill
Burgers, Ridge Pizza, Razzi’s Pizzeria,
Santa Fe Café, Stumbling Goat, Tangerine Thai, Teachers Lounge and Yanni’s.
Thanks to a donation from Metropolis, all participating restaurants will be
marked with balloons the day of the
event. For additional information, call
206.783.2244.
Donations can also be made directly
to the soup kitchens by sending them to
the PNA, 6532 Phinney Ave N, 98103.

Hot Meals
PNA Program Finds
Familiar Home
When a program serves over 20,000
meals a year to those in need, simply
picking it up and moving it across town
can be a rather daunting task. Luckily
for the PNA Hot Meals Program, the final destination made all the effort worth
it. After receiving notice that its prior
location, Crown Lutheran Church in Ballard, had been slated for development,
the program searched around town and
found its ideal new home at the very familiar Greenwood Senior Center.
The GSC already had quite a bit of
practice hosting meals, with daily offerings being cooked up by an amazing crew of volunteers for many of the
guests who come to visit. Conveniently
enough, they also had a little extra space
for a few more fridges and their kitchen
was free on Monday evenings. The Hot
Meals Program could not have found
a more welcoming and suitable home
than this very location, which was already a thriving part of PNA.
So, over a couple weeks in June, the
fridges, freezers, food and other assorted gadgets were all packed up and
moved from Ballard to the GSC. On June
17, just hours after Food Lifeline made its
first ever delivery to the Senior Center,
the Hot Meals crew served up a healthy
and delicious meal of beef, pork, rice,
salad, fruit and cake to a hungry gathering of friends and neighbors. Needless
to say, happy bellies told of good things
to come!
The PNA Hot Meals Program serves
three meals weekly to our neighbors in
need, with dinners on Monday, 5-6pm
at GSC and Tuesday, 5-6pm at St. John
Lutheran Church as well as a lunch on
Wednesday, 12-1pm, also at St. John Lutheran Church.
If you’re interested in volunteering for
the program at any of these locations, or
in helping with food donation pickup,

Warm, dry summer weather is producing early and prolific crops of berries, summer squash, cucumbers and
tree fruit. Sunny weather also encourages Phinney residents to linger at the
Farmers Market on Friday nights, enjoying dinner and music in Phinney Center’s
recently renovated plaza.
Learn to preserve the summer bounty at a free cooking class, Preserving
102, on Friday, September 6 from 3:306pm. It’s time to put away peaches,
pears, applesauce and more. Preserving
means sweet reminders of summer and
great homemade gifts during long Seattle winter. Learn to make jams, sodas
and more.
As fall begins, farmers will be har-
vesting crunchy apples, fresh honey
and vine-ripened tomatoes. Each week
kids can get a Farmers Market Passport
stamp at the Info Booth, and the whole
family will enjoy the new sights and flavors rolling into the Farmers Market as
seasons change.

Whittier Kids Recipe
Granola Bars
Granola bars are a great take along
snack, but it’s often hard to get them to
stick together without adding a bunch of
extra sugar and oil. I use this recipe that
gets its stickiness from bananas with the
help of some dried fruit and nutbutter.
They are also easily made gluten free
with the use of gluten free oats.
At Whittier Kids we use either soynut
or sunflower butter, some kid favorites
are coconut-pineapple, apricot-cranberry, and cinnamon-apple. It is an extremely versatile recipe; do some experimenting and see what works for you!
Granola Bars
(Makes 12 small or 6 medium bars)
Ingredients:
1 to 1-1/2 cups dried fruit
1/2 cup nut or seed butter
2 ripe bananas, mashed
1 cup rolled oats
1 tsp vanilla extract
pinch of cinnamon
pinch of salt (if using unsalted nutbutter)
optional: 1/4 cup nuts or seeds
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350˚
- Use a food processor to chop dried
fruits. Mix nutbutter and bananas until
a paste forms (this can be done in the
processor or separately)
- Add remaining ingredients and stir
to mix - Spread in greased 8x8 pan with a
spatula OR spoon into muffin cups
- Bake 15 minutes or until set and
slightly browned
- Place pan on cooling rack and wait
10 minutes before slicing into bars
- Can be stored in the refrigerator for
up to 5 days or frozen for several weeks

PNA Summer Camps
Planning Camp Days For Kids Requires A Balance Of Activities
By Nat Evans
Summer is a time when we often think
of proverbial epic road trips, plumes of
charcoal smoke rising in the distance,
and sticky hands from ice cream that we
just couldn’t eat fast enough before it
melted.
While all those things are still part of
summer, at Whittier Kids the daily grind
is a diverse cornucopia of activities ranging from classic field trips like swimming
at the Ballard Pool to more forwardthinking things like visiting the SOIL art
gallery in Pioneer Square – a fixture in
the Seattle art scene for decades. Balancing out art and physical activities we
take trips to experience agriculture and
space outside of the confines of the city,
such as Bolles Organic Berry Farm – a
beautiful destination in Monroe where
kids pick berries and discuss vegetables
with a friendly, laconic farmer – getting
to know the source of our food is a vital
experience in teaching the next generation about sustainability.
Back at home the teachers painstakingly plan activities that mirror the field
trips -- each aspect of the experience
relating back to the weekly theme. And,
just as the field trips are diverse, so are
the aforementioned projects and activities. Making a large jar of pickled vegetables and building then firing water-powered bottle rockets are typical examples
of activities that we offer at our site during the summer. Other projects relate to many different themes, and are an entity unto

Serving Seattle Since 1948
Collectively, the experience of summer camp at Whittier Kids makes an
indelible mark on the kids and families
that we serve – a long series of experiences that will be unpacked over a lifetime and help shape kids’ lives. A great
childhood is an endless blur of good
memories – we’re here to create that
blur.
The Friends of Kirke Park, 7028 9th
Ave NW in Ballard, is excited to announce that construction on the Kirke
Park Trellis began in July. This project
came together after community planning meetings and a rousing effort by
neighbors to complete a Department of
Neighborhoods Small and Simple Grant
and build the trellis. Many thanks also go
to Limback Lumber, The Fat Hen, Whittier Heights Community Council and our
many neighbors who donated funds to
complete the process!
Additionally, the Friends of Kirke Park
may have secured funds to build a planting strip in front of the park! This valuable green space and traffic calming feature is under consideration by SDOT and
other city reviewers.
While the neighbors requested a rain
garden or swale (depending on geotechnical results) the funding available from
SDOT could only build a planting strip.
SPU is currently considering guidelines
to retrofit planting strips into stormwater catchment gardens (again, this is not
to build a deep stormwater retention
feature) so we may be able to do that in
the future.

PNA Arts
Gallery Features
Dancing Surfaces
In September, the Phinney Center
Gallery will feature Dancing Surfaces, a
juried exhibition of artwork by Washington State members of the Surface
Design Association. Dancing Surfaces
presents 32 pieces of art from 22 artists.
The artists represented in Dancing Surfaces utilize innovative and experimental approaches to the medium of fiber
in art. An extensive variety of materials
are used to create the works on exhibit
including fiber in wax encaustic paint,
hand dyed silk, basketry, and felted
sculpture.
What is surface design?
Surface design refers to any process
that gives structure, pattern or color to
fiber and fabric. These include spinning,
felting, papermaking, weaving, knotting,
netting, looping, dyeing, painting, stitching, cutting, piecing, printing, quilting
and embellishing. Surface design encompasses the coloring, patterning and
structuring of fiber and fabric.
Who is the Surface Design Association?
The Surface Design Association is a
member-supported community of international creators, educators, collectors
and curators dedicated to the art and
practice of surface design. Their mission
is to educate each other and the public
about the innovative manipulation and
embellishment of textile surfaces.
The goal is to serve as the go to resource for information about the textile
arts and advocate for the exchange of
ideas through publications, conferences,
educational opportunities and exhibitions. The Association supports members’ efforts to reach the widest possible
audience with their work.
The Surface Design Association of
Washington is a member-run organization; a collective of professional full
time artists, teachers, hobbyists, beginners and collectors, who are all enthusiasts about the rich and textured world
of fiber art and surface design.

Less Waste = More Green
Community Organizations Benefit From Waste Challenge
Eight Greenwood/Crown Hill nonprofits and/or community groups will
reap the benefits of a $40,000 Think
Green Recycling Challenge hosted by
Waste Management earlier this year.
Last fall, Waste Management (WM)
challenged 10 communities that represent its service areas to reduce their
neighborhood’s waste footprint by
recycling and composting as much as
they could. The incentive: the winning
community would receive $40,000 to
donate to non-profits and community
groups serving their residents.
In June, WM announced that the
Greenwood/ Crown Hill “Wednesday
North” service area had won the competition by reducing waste more than
any other collection area.
Last fall, the Phinney Neighborhood
Association (PNA) agreed to be the
community partner with WM and will
be facilitating the grant process, which
will award eight grants of $5,000 each.
Any non-profit or community group
with a non-profit fiscal sponsor in the
Greenwood/Crown Hill neighborhood is
eligible to apply. Applications are available online at www.phinneycenter.org.

Chris & Nancy Johnson
Volunteer Spotlight
Chris And Nancy
Johnson
If you’ve been to the PNA Beer Taste
anytime in the last 18 years, you’ve
probably seen Chris and Nancy Johnson,
PNA volunteers extraordinaire!
In fact, even if you haven’t been to
the event but you’ve seen the posters,
you’ve seen their creative work.
Chris and Nancy joined the PNA in
1983, shortly after moving into the
neighborhood. Friends told them about
the PNA and what a great ‘small town’
place it was. They immediately put their
three-year-old daughter, Lorraine, on
the preschool co-op waiting list. While
on the waiting list, Ann Bowden, who
had just moved to the area, started up
a play group for the wait listers, meeting at each other’s homes and getting to
know each other.
Once in the preschool, Lorraine made
more new friends and Chris and Nancy
began their PNA volunteering through
the co-op where they made lasting
neighborhood friends.
In 1984, Chris expanded his volunteer
duties by joining the PNA Board of Directors where he served for five years.
On the Board, Chris was chair of the Halloween Carnival, hosted PNA Board phoneathon callers in his downtown offices
and was involved in planning the future
of the PNA.
Nancy joined the PNA Beer Taste
Committee in 1995, working on the
clever Beer Taste themes and designing
posters and tee-shirts. Chris joined the
committee in 2008 and this summer’s
“Big Beertha” theme was his idea!
Nancy took her turn on the PNA
board in 2001 and served for six years.
In Nancy’s tenure, the Board began
working on purchasing the John B. Allen
School for the Phinney Center and financial sustainability for the PNA.
As active volunteers and members for
30 years, Nancy and Chris donate their
time and talents to the PNA on many
different levels. You can see Nancy and
Chris in the info booth at Winter Festival
and the Home Fair, tasting at the PNA
Wine Taste, bidding at the PNA auction, calling lapsed PNA members, volunteering, flipping pancakes at the Annual meeting and of course at the Beer
Tastes!
Nancy and Chris are integral to our
neighborhood. We appreciate and thank
them for their community spirit!

Pubs With A Feel
Of Town Hall
For years, Chris Navarra’s goal was
to own three bars or restaurants. Next
year, he will be opening his eighth, four
of which are in the PhinneyWood neighborhood.
Chris, who owns Prost! and co-owns
Ridge Pizza, the newly opened Martino’s
and the soon to be former Carmelita, is
a first generation German American. As
a child, he spent summers in Germany
and has vivid memories of the neighborhood pub.
“I remember going to the bartender
as a four-year-old and getting ice cream;
at ten I was getting beef jerky and at 18
I was drinking beer. The pub was more
like the local town hall; it was so much
more than just a bar.”
Those memories were the original
idea behind Prost!, Chris’ first bar.
In 2002, he took all of the equity from
his Greenwood house and put it in the
bar. He spent the next two years working
in the bar every day.
“I had no experience as a bartender
but I knew what I liked as a customer.”
Two years later, Chris opened Die
Bierstube in Roosevelt and a couple of
years later opened Feierabend in South
Lake Union, his first real restaurant.
His goal of three businesses reached,
that should have been it “but the process is addictive,” Chris notes.
Working with additional partners, his
fourth pub, another Prost!, opened in
West Seattle and quickly became a favorite neighborhood hangout. A friend
in Portland nagged him for two years before Prost! Portland opened.

PhinneyWood business owner Chris Navarra
At that point, Chris felt it was important to reinvest in his own neighborhood. By then he got married and had a
daughter and wanted a space that would
be family friendly. Thus Ridge Pizza was
born.
He is proud the Ridge has items
named after other local businesses, calling it a great way to “cross pollinate.”
“There’s no reason not to create buzz
for other neighborhood businesses,” he
notes.
His latest venture is Martino’s, which
he expects to be opened late in August.
The shop is a casual eatery featuring
smoked meat sandwiches and salads
and, thanks to his California upbringing,
tri-tip steak sandwiches. It has two local
beers on tap.
And next year, he’ll open a new restaurant in the space that now houses
Carmelita. Owners Katherine Neuman
and Michael Hughes decided earlier this
year that they were ready to try other
things and Chris jumped at the chance
to take over the space. He is working
with a friend who owns Little Water
Cantina to create a nontraditional Mexican restaurant that will have both a casual feel but also a “date night” space.
His next goal: holiday lights on the
trees along Greenwood and Phinney Avenues. Coming soon to a tree near you.

85th and Greenwood, knows just how
much that area has changed over the
past 124 years.
“That property has been in my family
since 1889,” explains Brunt whose greatgrandfather was the original owner and
farmer of the property. Since then, the
property has remained in the family
with Brunt’s aunt developing the first
commercial space in 1953 as a Foodland
grocery.
Today a dedicated one-lane road,
Morrow Lane, which is a tribute to
Brunt’s great-grandfather Peter Fran
Morrow, runs through Piper Village.
Once completed it will run from Greenwood to 1st Avenue, creating easy access to Fred Meyer.
At this writing, Brunt anticipates a
late August opening of the six apartments (twelve total) that are located
above the retail space in Piper Village.
Of the 80,000 square feet of space,
there is a remaining 20,000 square feet
waiting to be occupied. Replacement of
the crosswalk on Greenwood between
85th and 87th should also be completed
at the end of August.
Just south from the Piper Village project on the southwest corner of 85th and
Greenwood is a less visible but quite
large renovation of the space that previously housed Antika. Kelly Powers of
Slattery Properties, which now owns
the space, explains that the building
was originally a fish market in which
the floor sloped to the street. Because
of this, Antika had a false floor put in to
even it out. “We took out the false floor and are
in the process of redoing the concrete
flooring,” Powers explains, “We are
very excited for the finished product.
Our intent is to refurbish the building

while keeping its historical significance
in mind.”
The hope for the new space is to outfit it with a bar or restaurant or some
type of event space with the focus on
providing a tenant where the neighbors
can enjoy the space. Slattery Properties is open to suggestions of potential
businesses and encourages residents
of Greenwood and Phinney to provide
their thoughts on how best to utilize the
new space.
Continuing south to 83rd and Greenwood the Yard Café (better known just
as “the Yard”) has almost doubled in size
in its expansion this past June. The Yard’s
Bar Manager, Jason, explained that it is
a priority to use local materials throughout the establishment.
In the expansion, several tables and
a long bar were made from one piece
of wood. Much of the wood finishing
on the original side of the building came
from a submerged ship found at the
mouth of one of Washington’s rivers.
Originally a house and later a real estate
agency, the Yard has become a hot spot
for food and drink.

Business
Meet Your Local Business Owners
Arts and culture is alive and well in PhinneyWood thanks to a monthly art walk that features 30+ venues, live theater, a renowned art gallery, two dance
academies, a music school and weekly folk concerts. Meet some of the businesses who help make it happen.
Francine Seders Gallery has been at 67th and Greenwood since 1970. The Gallery
represents mostly Northwest artists, including masters such as Jacob Lawrence and
his wife Gwendolyn Knight, Guy Anderson, Mark Tobey, Michael Spafford, Michael
Dailey and Norman Lundin. Younger artists have been added over the years. Francine turned 80 last December and will be closing the gallery at the end of this year.
She plans to travel, work on catalogues and a book on the history of her gallery and
the Seattle art scene.
John and Michele Osgood (with Lucien) - BHerd Studios - Located above Chase Bank
at 85th and Greenwood, BHerd Studios is a contemporary gallery curating monthly
rotating exhibits featuring emerging to mid-career Pacific NW artists. John is one of
the artists behind the “phoenix” mural that commemorated the Greenwood arsons
several years ago. Michele is Chair of the Greenwood Arts Council and coordinates
the venue submissions and the artupphinneywood.com website.
Sheri Hauser – Tasty – In their gallery/retail space, Sheri and husband Sean offer
what they call “delectable collectibles” – handmade local art, one of a kind treasures, kitchy curiosities. Sheri is a force behind the neighborhood’s monthly art walk
and the Greenwood Arts Council and also created the Art Walk Consortium, a collective of representatives from14 neighborhoods who independently produce their
own monthly art walk designed to support and promote neighborhood art walks.
Kris Kierulff – School of Rock – New to PhinneyWood in June, the School of Rock has
150-160 students in a year-round program that takes students from the lesson room
to the stage, developing both their confidence and musicianship with programs
designed for all skill levels. SOR students perform about three times a year at real
rock venues all over Seattle. Check their website for the lineup of shows coming up
in September.
Rick Rodenbeck and Scott Nolte - Taproot Theatre Company Originally a touring
company, Taproot moved to 85th Street in 1991. The company is now Seattle’s largest
mid-size theatre company, serving over 150,000 people annually with a Mainstage
season, touring programs and an acting studio. Their space will expand this fall with a
new black box theatre, café, scene shop, dressing rooms and offices.
Wendy Keen - Avanti Art and Design is a co-operative art gallery and full service
picture framing studio, honoring and showcasing local artist’s amazing creations
through conservation and presentation. Wendy is a member of the Greenwood Arts
Council and hosts regular art openings every second Friday of the month as part of
the PhinneyWood Art Up Art Walk.

Being Healthy Starts with the Air You Breathe
Local contractor helps Seattle homeowners make it a healthier place to live
If you’re like most SeattleBellevue residents, keeping
yourself and your family
healthy is one of your top
priorities, especially once
school starts. So you might
be surprised to know that
the EPA and American Lung
Association estimate that
the air inside your home is
anywhere from 7 to 100
times more polluted than the
air outside.
Most homeowners have good,
high efficiency air filters in
their heating system. While
these trap particulates, in
many cases there is little
impact to overall indoor air
quality. According to energy
assessment expert, Cory Tobin
(Certified Energy Auditor from
Washington Energy Services),
“Air filters are one part of a
larger solution. One of the
main reasons homes can be
unhealthy is due to the
original construction.”
When your home was built,
many small holes were drilled
to run all of the plumbing,
wiring, skylights, TV and other
cables as well as heating and
air conditioning ductwork.
Unfortunately all of these
seeming small holes and cracks
collectively equal a “gaping
hole the size of a basketball,”
says Tobin. Imagine that in
your living room!
You would never consider
breathing the air from your
Page 24 • The Review • Fall 2013
attic or crawl space as your
primary air source but that
is exactly what is happening.
Tobin explains, “these holes
create a direct air exchange
between your attic and
your living space, allowing
unwanted pollutants to circulate into your home and
at the same time wasting
valuable energy.”
How Do Contaminants Get
into Your Home
When your house was built many
small holes were drilled to run all
of the pipes, wiring, etc.
Using a child’s drawing to illustrate
the point, this creates a direct air
exchange between your attic (the
triangle) and your living pace
(the square,) allowing unwanted
pollutants to circulate through your
home and wasting energy.
Breathe Easier and
Save Energy
“Getting started is easy” says
Tobin. “The first step is a 26
point home comfort and energy
assessment. It’s common sense
really, once people see how
easy it is to make their home
healthier and energy efficient
they are eager to get involved.”
The assessment, also known
as an energy audit, is not
just a walk through. Expect
the auditor to be there for 3
hours conducting detailed
tests and inspections. The
assessment they perform gives
homeowners the current health
and energy efficiency of their
home, and provides a clear plan
for making improvements.
This service is normally
$399 but Washington Energy
Services is giving this away
for only $199 for the next 30
days. After reviewing their
assessment reports, homeowners who choose to perform
upgrades using Washington
Energy Services may qualify
The solution is simple, separate the square from the triangle by
sealing your holes and ductwork. The result will be a healthier
and more energy efficient home.
