Bingo Karaoke Continues To Make Converts

My parents’ annual visit last year fell
at the end of the month so for the first
time I was able to take them to Bingo
Karaoke at the Greenwood Senior Center. They actually weren’t too keen on
the idea. I heard some grumbling about
“going to a senior center.”
As we were leaving GSC that evening, my Mom remarked “From now
on, we’re coming out at the end of the
month so we can go to Karaoke Bingo
every time we visit!” Yes, my parents
joined the growing number of Bingo
Karaoke faithful.
Flash forward a year and as I write
this, my plans have already been laid for
May’s Bingo Karaoke. By the time you
read this, I’ll have celebrated my birthday with friends and family at the GSC,
heard some fabulous warbling, and
eaten a boat of tater tots! (And, yes, my
parents will be there!)
The one, the only, Bingo Karaoke at
the Greenwood Center is held the last
Friday of each month. Tickets are hot,
hot, hot and sell out within hours—
sometimes minutes! It’s an evening of
“dauber toasts,” good natured competition, and the ever-entertaining Jeanne
“The Bingo Queen.”
And while you’re having all sorts of

An expanded program to bring solar
power to beloved neighborhood institutions is about to hit Northwest Seattle,
and you can help charge it up.
Community Solar on Phinney Ridge,
brought to you by Seattle City Light, will
put solar panels on the roof of the Phinney Center’s Blue Building. Woodland
Park Zoo will also have two arrays as
part of the project; one off public view
on the zoo’s commissary building, and
another in full public view on the Rain
Forest Food Pavilion.
The south-facing roof of the PNA’s
blue building will house approximately
13 kilowatts of photovoltaic solar panels, manufactured by Bellingham-based
Itek Energy. The inverter that connects
the array to our electric grid is also
made in Washington. The zoo will have
a similar, although at roughly 62 kW
much larger, system.
Here’s the important part: We need
your help!
The projects will be funded by you,
your neighbors and anyone who is
served by Seattle City Light. Following
on the heels of two successful Solarize
Seattle campaigns last year and the last
Community Solar project at the Seattle
Aquarium, we expect a groundswell of

unit will be $150, and you can purchase
up to 125 of them if you want. You can
even donate the cost to the PNA and let
the PNA buy some shares.
During the project’s payoff period,
Seattle City Light will own and operate
these community solar systems. Participants will receive funds that should
pay back the cost of their units through
their Seattle City Light account. At the
end of the payoff period in 2020, the
utility will turn ownership of the system
over to each nonprofit host.
On July 1, 2020, the PNA will own
its system and Woodland Park Zoo
will own theirs. Going forward, each
organization will reap the full benefits
of solar power for their use, and the
financial benefit of lowered electric
bills as the power generated is credited
back to their accounts. With the solar
systems having 25-year warranties and
projected to operate much longer, the
PNA and the zoo expect to power-up
with clean solar energy for many years
to come.

Gumshoe 5K Walk takes place August
1-10. This is your chance to have fun
with friends and family and support
three Greenwoods: Senior Center, Food
Bank and Elementary School PTA. Exercise your body and brain on this 3.1
mile neighborhood walk by solving puzzling clues and answering tricky questions that direct your path and help you
discover delightful “art.” Choose your
own time, and you can always make it a
two-day (or more) walk.

didn’t do it until last year. It was so
much fun! I walked with my parents.
My dad loved seeing the neighborhood
he had lived in years ago. I can’t believe
I didn’t do the Gumshoe before,” said
Mari.

with her three kids (7, 9 and 11), “Fabulous family bonding experience! My
kids were reluctant at the beginning,

but started trying to outdo each other
finding clues a couple of clues in.’’
Zulma-Lin added, “It’s always fun to
do the Gumshoe because you get to
discover new places in the neighborhood. I’ve done it almost every year and
it never gets old. It’s challenging, but
I’ve never had to call the Answer Man.”
And from Cecily Kaplan, Director,
Greenwood Senior Center: “The Greenwood Senior Center has benefited from
this wonderful community event. This
support enables us to provide the support services and programs that focus
on healthy aging year after year. What a
bonus that Gumshoe is such a fun event
and gets me out connecting with our
wonderful neighborhood. I look forward
to participating again this year!”

Putting The Y In Phinney

After School Care
The Phinney Neighborhood Association will be co-sponsoring after school
care daily with the Y at the Phinney
Center beginning in the Fall of 2014 for
elementary school students. The Y will
transport children from neighborhood
schools including, but not limited to,
West Woodland, Daniel Bagley, Greenwood, and McDonald International.
Students in Kindergarten through 5th
grade will participate in age-appropriate
after school activities with children of
similar ages from the end of the school
day to 6 pm.
The Y at Phinney Center will feature expert, caring Y staff and will
help kids develop self-confidence and
independence in a safe and nurturing
environment. Younger students enjoy
art, songs, games, outdoor activities
and more, while older students experience fun and challenging activities that
develop leadership and teamwork skills.
Our flexible registration format allows
parents to sign up for one to five days
a week for the duration of the quarter.

Streets & Street Soccer

Summer Streets gives the communities of Phinney and Greenwood a
chance to take a deep breath together,
to leave the cars in the garage, and to
enjoy a leisurely summer Saturday outside. My mother would have loved it.
This year the Greenwood Street Soccer Tournament and the Umpqua Bank
School of Rock Concert will coincide
with Summer Streets on Saturday,
August 9, creating a bustling street fair
greater than the sum of its parts. Summer Streets is a uniquely Seattle event
that opens up the city’s largest public
space—our streets—for people to
discover active, healthy transportation,
connect with neighbors and support
local businesses. Where else but Seattle
would the Department of Transportation close a major street for 20 blocks
for youth rock musicians, street soccer
and craft beer—all to raise funds for
Fred Hutch?
All ages are welcome to enjoy street
performers, art activities, sidewalk sales
and to try out the Cheetah Meetah
speed tester sponsored by the Woodland Park Zoo.
And between 85th and 87th Streets,
the Umpqua Bank School of Rock
Concert features talented teen rock
musicians followed by a headlining local
band at sunset, with a local craft beer
garden provided by Naked City Brewery. Also on that block, the Greenwood
Street Soccer Tournament will see
teams compete all day in one of three
divisions—Fun, Competitive and Pro—
with a few former Sounders on show in
the Pro division.
All proceeds from the street soccer
tournament, $1 from every pint sold in
the beer garden, and all proceeds from
a major raffle hosted by Naked City
and the School of Rock, go directly to
benefit the Innovators Network at Fred
Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
Even after my mother was diagnosed
with cancer, our family continued to
enjoy the outdoors together. It’s in
honor of mom’s indomitable spirit that
the street soccer Fun division trophy is
named the Betsy’s Mountain Cup.
Each day will feature specific clubs or
activities that include Lego engineering,
movie-making, and physics of catapults,
as well as a classic assortment of arts
and crafts, sports and group games. All
programs include 30 minutes pf physical recreation and a healthy snack each
day. PNA members receive a discount
for each class that they sign up for.

How Do I Score A Ticket To Bingo Karaoke?
Bingo Karaoke is a beloved fundraiser for the Greenwood Senior Center
and is usually held on the last Friday of the month. While scoring a ticket
can certainly take cunning, patience and even an insatiable desire to sing,
it’s also a life changing experience and well worth the effort. Tickets are
only available online through the PNA website: http://phinneycenter.org/
bingo/index.html. They go on sale at 12:01 am on the Monday after each
event and they often sell out in less time than it takes to patiently endure
the long version of Freebird. If you can’t get tickets and wish to be added to
the wait list, email [email protected] with the number in your party
and phone number. No promises but we’ll see what we can do!

PNA Village Is 2, Poised For Growth

The friendly, excited buzz struck me
as soon as I walked in. Yes, last year’s
PNA Village first anniversary was a
great party. But this year’s gathering?
Homecoming! A lively community was
celebrating, greeting old friends and introducing new ones, continuing conversations started at book group or games
night or a potluck or in any of the
hundreds of spontaneous member and
volunteer connections over the year.
Some highlights from this past year:
A jump in membership and volunteers…now 84 memberships representing 107 people, and 84 trained volunteers, who completed 2449 hours of
service in 2013!
There are 71 businesses on our preferred vendor list (a 54% jump)
A growing list of activities including
socials, a new games night, a new book
group…plus countless spontaneous
activities sparked between people who

Tinker and Turn
​Join us in the Phinney Center Gallery for Tinker and Turn, a show by
local artists James Dixon, Rick Holst and
Megan Lingerfelt. The artists all explore
mechanical themes, through a variety
of media. James Dixon exemplifies the whimsical fusion of art and mechanics. He creates and constructs kinetic sculptures.
Rick Holst creates colorful works with
interlocking and overlapping circles in
three dimensional compositions. ​Megan
Lingerfelt’s work seeks to glorify the
utilitarian. Isolating one structure at a
time, removing it from its functional
context, she highlights the beauty of a
manufactured form whose purpose was
never to be beautiful.
The show runs from June 18-August
1. The opening reception with the artists is Friday, June 20, from 7-9 pm.

Greenwood Resident Releases New Jazz Album

Range and the Rockies. Their work
offers a conversation that is at once
aesthetic and topical. Join us for the
opening reception on Friday, August 8,
from 7-9 pm.
HOPSCOTCH is the musical duo of
Greenwood resident, singer/songwriter
Jeanie Mishler and her song writing
partner, composer and pianist Charlie
Hiestand. Their self-titled new album,
Hopscotch, offers up a rich variety of
new jazz, drawing from swing, blues,
Latin, funk and hip-hop.
Influenced heavily by bands like Pink
Martini, both Jeanie and Charlie wanted
to write songs that paid homage to the
rich tradition of jazz song structure,
with rhythms and harmonies that sup-
port rhyme schemes that make sense-nothing minimalist or reductive about
them. They’ve developed a sound that
is simultaneously both retro and current
with grooves that give them a fresh feel.

styling of the very talented Jean Mishler
fronting an ensemble of Seattle’s best
players on a set of fresh poppy jazz

It’s All About Neighbors Helping Neighbors

What is a HUB? According to the dictionary, a hub is the effective center of
an activity, region or network. And that’s
just what the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA), Phinney Ridge Community Council (PRCC) and St. John’s United
Lutheran Church are working on.
Community Emergency Hubs are predetermined locations for community
members to meet after an emergency to
share information, resources, problem
solve and support each other. Hubs are
located throughout the city of Seattle
(see map) and are a place for communicating with our communities and with
Emergency Management in a disaster.
North Seattle Boys and Girls Club will
be one of the new Hubs in our area and
the PNA and PRCC are working on two
more, one at the Phinney Center and another at St. John’s at 55th and Phinney.
In May, Phinney Center staff and
PRCC members, as well as groups and
emergency volunteers from throughout
Seattle, participated in a disaster drill
to test neighborhood emergency preparedness. The groups, known as the
Seattle Emergency Communications
Hubs, joined the City’s Auxiliary Communications Service (ACS) ham volunteers
to simulate a volcanic explosion and its
impact on Seattle, especially if the wind
blows ash towards Seattle and resulting

lahars (mud flows) impact infrastructure. The ACS volunteers practiced sending
situation reports of conditions in each
neighborhood from the Hubs into the
City’s Emergency Operations Center. In
a real event, that information could be
used by City response planners to assess
conditions throughout the city and develop response plans.
What does this mean to you? In a disaster, you can go to your nearest Hub
to get information, leave information,
get help or offer help to your community
members. It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors. Our HUBs need community involvement to be successful. To do that, we
are looking for volunteers who would
like to be a part of this program. If you
are interested in helping, contact Ruthie
MacDonald at ruthm@phinneycenter.
org and be a part of your neighborhood
Hub.
We also need to connect with community SNAP (Seattle Neighborhood Actively Prepare) groups. If your neighborhood is part of SNAP, contact us so we
can get you on our contact list. If you’re
not close enough to the Phinney Center
or St. John’s United Lutheran Church
but still would like to be involved, let us
know and we will connect you with the
closest Hub.

Awesome Teachers Appreciated At Whittier Kids
In May, Whittier Kids preschool and
school-age teachers were showered
with gifts. Not because they are royalty,
but because they are awesome! And…
it was teacher appreciation week.
One of the major draws to our highly
popular program are the creative ideas
and skills our teachers bring. Thanks to
teacher appreciation week, we thought
this would be a good opportunity to
introduce our teachers.
Angela Glaz (School-Age Lead Teacher): When Angela’s not at Whittier,
she’s either hiking with her fur child (a
4 year old dachshund), paddleboarding, or teaching yoga to kids of all ages
around Seattle. Early June, she taught
yoga to over 200 yogis at Seattle
Central Community College, to raise
money for At-Risk youth through wonderful non-profit called, Street Yoga.
Megan Wallace (Full Day Preschool
Teacher/School-Age 3-5 Teacher):
Megan is originally from Arizona, but
moved to the Northwest in May of
2011 and she loves it! Outside of work
she likes yoga, bicycling (esp. on the
Burke-Gilman Trail), hiking, a good cup
of coffee, and learning new things.
Currently, Megan is working on French
language and Swing Dancing.
Tyron Evans (School-Age 3-5 Teacher): Tyrone aka Tai is a mover and a
shaker. After moving between Missouri,
Virginia, Massachusetts and Germany
as a child, Tai’s family eventually settled
in the Boston area. As an adult, Tai continued to travel. After double majoring
in Comparative Literature and Chinese,
he made his way to China for nine
months, then came to Seattle, where
he has been happily teaching kids all
the wonders of the world for the last
two years.
Irene Handley (School-Age K-2
Teacher): Irene Handley comes to Whitter Kids from a theatre background.
While not teaching, she loves directing
plays because it allows her to dabble
in all aspects of theatre, from performance to design. A devised theatre
piece she collaborated on, LOL : /, has
recently been published and is in the
works to be produced in New York in
the 2015 season.
Forrest Perrine (School Age K-2
Teacher): Forrest Perrine is an artist and
educator born and raised in the Pacific
Northwest. The art and education he’s
most interested in is public – making
murals and helping kids learn to write
with 826 Seattle, a non-profit writing
center in Greenwood (with free writing

considering going back to school soon
to get a masters in education.
Becky Rust (School Age K-2 Teacher):
When not teaching kids how to build
amazing Lego creations, you can find
Becky hanging with her cat, Oreo, or
playing a serious game of soccer. Becky
is a veteran teacher at Whittier Kids,
with over eight years of service. She
has served many families and many
generations of families, she’s pretty
much a Whittier household name.
Candy Kincaid (Full Day Preschool
Lead Teacher): Outside of being a
teacher, Candy also cares for, walks and
snuggles her soon to be two year old
son, Dash, and her three year old dog,
Olive. She loves the sunshine and being
outdoors, but her passion is teaching
and mentoring children so that they can
grow to the best version of themselves.
Melissa Robinson (Half Day Preschool Lead Teacher): Melissa enjoys
movies and reading autobiographies.
When she’s not working, she’s all about
family! Especially her 9 year old daughter. Melissa also loves animals. Her
home “zoo” cares for 2 cats, 1 lizard, 2
fish and a hamster.
Melissa Lowe (Full Day Preschool
Teacher): Melissa loves to do things
outdoors, such as hiking, camping and
exploring new areas. In poor weather
she enjoys singing, playing piano, playing guitar and watching movies.

Abby loves hiking and climbing. On the
weekends and evenings she instructs
youth programs at the Mountaineers.
She teaches; climbing, outdoor living
skills, and environmental science. Abby
has also been taking classes to improve
her own mountaineering skills. She
hopes to complete a master’s in Environmental Education and Wilderness
Therapy soon.
Si Le (Half Day Preschool Teacher): Si
used to write and recite spoken word,
flow with an ocean of verbs. Mostly
unheard, but to his friends he was dope
with the verse. Writing was his focus at
first, he chose to rehearse. Si was learning it, aspired to be a journalist. But
somewhere along the lines, he traded
away his rhymes to become a teacher
to enlighten the mind.
Diana Bharucha (Full Day Preschool
Teacher): Diana’s interests outside
of education include child and family therapy techniques, social science
research and social welfare work. She
also loves anything to do with the
natural world and animals. For fun, she
loves trying new restaurants, going to
concerts, hiking, practicing yoga, writing
and drawing.

Health Advocacy Workshop

This two-hour workshop on how to best approach the complicated situation of
hospitalization contains two short expert presentations, followed by the opportunity
to ask questions of both.

Safe and Sound in the Hospital: A Short Course
This presentation will give you practical tips and tools to help you and your family
stay safe in the hospital, based on content from Campaign Zero. Campaign Zero is
dedicated to zeroing out preventable medical errors (now the third leading cause of
death in America) in the hospital.

Eyes Wide Open: Medicare and Hospitalizations
This short presentation will help you understand some of the right questions to
ask and how to navigate when a loved one with Medicare coverage goes into the
hospital. If time allows, we will discuss other pertinent topics such as palliative care
and the POLST (Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment).

Volunteer Spotlight
Dani And Wayne Reinhardt
Find Time To Give Back
Shortly after Dani and Wayne Reinhardt moved into
the neighborhood in 1977, neighbors started talking
about the possibility of a new community center with
programs that would build community. They went to a
few of the meetings but “work interfered.”
Fast forward more than 35 years: those meetings
resulted in the creation of the Phinney Neighborhood
Association and the Phinney Center and its host of programs and, now that work no longer interferes. Dani
and Wayne are heavily involved in many of those programs as volunteers.
They’ve been PNA members from the beginning
and, over the years, were involved to some extent, particularly with events and particularly Dani.
But retirement has spurred them on to do more –
lots more.
Between the two of them, they help at a variety of
events (think wine taste, beer taste, auction, Bingo karaoke), garden in the Heart of Phinney Park, do data
entry, volunteer at the Hot Meal program, serve on the
PNA Village vendor committee, distribute posters, crochet blankets…
Why do they do it? To get into events for free, Dani
says.
But they also believe it’s their time to give back. They
particularly enjoy working with staff and other volunteers and note that volunteering regularly – in their
neighborhood – has created a “community of volunteers.”
“We get as much back as we give,” Wayne said.
Both encourage new retirees to consider volunteering with the PNA, which “has a vast array of things you
can do.” (Although Wayne wants to put in a particular
plug for the Hot Meal Program’s soup kitchen which, he
says, needs a new supply of volunteers to help out the
long time volunteers, many of whom have been there
for more than 20 years.)

Tom Nissley. Nissley and his wife, Laura
Silverstein (who owns Glittersweet handbag company), took over in early May
and are changing the name to Phinney
Books. Phinney Books will open in early
June, and also will sell Glittersweet bags
and custom book-themed paper goods.

Taproot Theatre opened its Stage

Greenwood Car Show and the Greenwood Seafair Parade. These events could not happen without them.
Dave Liatos, owner of CPA Seattle, has been a long time parade sponsor and
volunteer. As well as contributing to the cost of the event, Dave tirelessly leads the
setting up and taking down of the grandstand each year. He is out before the sun
rises on the day before the parade to make sure there is a spot for the Grandstand
and he makes sure that it is tucked back safely away at the Phinney Center after
dark the night of the parade.

Shane Topal, owner of Bleachers Tavern, with Greenwood Seafair Parade Director Ann Woodward. Ann has been running the parade since 2007 and has
relied on Shane’s help since then. Each February they “pound the pavement”
together visiting all of the businesses on the parade route and distributing information about the parade date and time as well as looking for new sponsors and
connecting with area businesses.

John Walker, owner, John Walker’s Workshop. A Greenwood Knight from day one,
John Walker has been involved in the planning and setting up of the Greenwood
Car Show since 1993. In business on Greenwood Ave since 1980, John’s Workshop garage is car show headquarters on the day of the big event, for everything

John Shepherd, owner, Red Mill Burgers. An original Greenwood Knight, John
Shepherd’s involvement with the Greenwood Car Show began 18 years ago as
a “minor sponsor.” Witnessing the show’s ups and downs over the years, he and
others formed the Greenwood Knights Car Club to help stabilize the annual event
and support fundraising efforts and food drives for various local nonprofits. John
and his partners/siblings, Babe and Michael, continue to be major sponsors of the
car show “to repay the community [that’s] been very good to us over the years.”

Jerry Barkley, owner, Crown Hill Automotive. In 2009, with the Greenwood Car
Show in transition and needing new blood, Jerry Barkley and four other local car
guys were asked to take over the event and “make it cool again.” Currently the
president of the car club and director of the car show, Jerry says “it gives me an
opportunity to be part of a big event that gives back to the community where I grew
up. That’s a great feeling.” Jerry’s favorite classic ride is his 1937 Ford Tudor, which
his older brother, Robert, gave to him more than 40 years ago. Customizing the
car off and on over the decades, he finished it in 2011, which was most likely also
a great feeling.
