The contractor has finished peeling back the floors and walls in the Brick Building to allow us to build an elevator shaft. Did you know that in 1917, seaweed was used as insulation? Neither did we until we uncovered piles of it as the flooring was being cut out. As construction progresses we can see the massive timbers that were used to support the roof, and the cement footings and columns that support those timbers. They are the skeleton that has held the slate roof, classrooms and hallways straight and plumb for nearly 100 years. The Brick Building was and is a structure for learning, and it is also a structure that has itself learned and changed to accommodate the needs of the community. In the basement, our alterations have revealed the old arch that was the original small stage. We can trace on the concrete floor the changes that have occurred as plumbing and restrooms were altered and replaced over the years. Our new plan will create yet another building iteration, as once again we add sinks and a child’s restroom into the design. In addition to the new elevator, our new accessible path into the building will turn a window into a door and create a gentle ramp up to the new opening. We will rebuild the existing third floor restrooms to be fully accessible and family friendly. As workers were removing slate from inside of the classroom, they found a delightful surprise: a message preserved for nearly 80 years, written in a confident hand in 1937 by Mary Collentine. It was a reminder of what we’ve retained, a great historic building that served generations in Seattle, and what we’ve lost, the ability of most for us to stand with Annual Wine Taste bottles up good spirits Winter Festival! Turning Insights Into Action Jan Gray Lee Harper Freeze’ and it’s real. People don’t open up and talk to each other as much but PNA makes that possible. It’s built by and for the community.” “PNA is a place that provides a way for community members to gather, do what we love doing together, learn what we want to learn and have conversations.” You were also filled with great ideas for the future, from facilitating conversations and building momentum around Give of Yourself Volunteer opportunities Learn to Grow Complete class lists 12 14 15 18 The Review Director’s Corner By Lee Harper, Executive Director and Jan Gray, Board President As our 2013-2015 strategic planning draws to a close, PNA has been reflecting on our past and ruminating on our future. Through surveys, focus groups and one-on-one conversations, we are asking critical questions: What are we accomplishing? Who are we reaching? Who are we failing to reach? What are we doing well? Where are we missing the boat? So what themes have emerged from this process? Well, many of you responded that you want to see PNA continue the work of building and supporting our community. Here are a few memorable quotes: “PNA is a place where everyone can come together, build networks - a safe place to turn strangers into neighbors.” “I had heard about the ‘Seattle Fruit of the Vine social justice to deepening engagement with underserved populations and ensuring sustainability and success for our entire community. PNA is a platform from which community members launch new ventures that inspire, equip and mobilize people to drive positive change. PNA projects, programs, events and activities develop because of ideas from people like you. PNA members have proposed and created the preschool co-ops, the Beer Tastes, the Wine Taste, the Gumshoe 5K, Ridge Romp, Rainbow Hop, the PNA Village, the PNA Business Group, Holiday Monkeys and much more. We look forward to sharing our completed 2016-2018 Strategic Framework with you early next year but more than that, we look forward to another three years of community input, insights and collaboration. A new workshop, the Difficult Conversations Series: The Social Construction of Race, is helping facilitate this dialogue. Using excerpts from the 2003 PBS documentary Race: The Power of an Illusion, the first two classes introduced biological and historical perspectives on how race, as an idea, has been misused in the U.S. to justify social phenomena like segregation. Jan Chalupny, a workshop participant, said “one of the most interesting topics that came up in the first class was how countries other than the U.S. think about the concept of race.” The workshop is both timely and long overdue. “The topic is in the air these days,” reports John Sodt, another participant. The workshop has helped him “feel more engaged in the changes concerning race that are happening all around us today. I am convinced there is an important shift occurring.” The third class, held on Nov. 18, looked at some of the governmental policies responsible for many of today’s racial inequalities. The workshops encourage participants to be change-makers. Each session introduces difficult topics, diving into some of the current disparities facing different members of the population, and then exploring ways in which we can heal and actively advocate for justice. Matthew Chavez, another workshop participant, said that “by gaining context from others, I firmly believe I am able to forge stronger relationships with my community by understanding the different ways they view the world and can work positively to advocate and foster By gaining context from others, I firmly believe I am able to forge stronger relationships with my community ... -- Matthew Chavez, Workshop Participant an inclusive sense of community.” These workshops are a way of making sure our relationships and social ties as a community are strengthened and made more inclusive, especially through troublesome times. We hope to make these big and complex topics less difficult to discuss. Workshops will resume in January. We will host screenings of Race again at the Greenwood Senior Center on Jan. 15, 22, and 29 from 1-3 pm and are currently finalizing the curriculum for the second part of the series, which will run from January to May. The program encompasses a network of volunteers to help with chores and errands, information and referrals, and community building activities. Villages like this exist across the country. Several PNA Village Advisory Board and Committee members attended the national Village-to-Village Conference held in Seattle October 5-7. Major themes of the meeting included changing the face of aging, developing beyond the formative years of a village, and how we describe ourselves in our communities. Our attendees returned from the conference with fresh ideas and renewed inspiration: “I was thoroughly impressed by the speakers and attendees. For me, the first speaker set the tone when she declared that ‘American society does not like old people’ and went on to show how stereotypes can be harmful and how they can be counteracted by entities like Villages. I gathered that many Villages are at the point we are now. We have reached the first step in our maturity process: we are no longer a start-up. Transitioning from the first exciting growing years to a sustainable, yet still growing, organization is a goal shared by many Villages.” (Jean-Loup Baer) “The conference was really well-run and organized, packed with amazing and inspiring information that I hope we can apply. It was wonderful to be surrounded with and have the opportunity to interact with so many movers and shakers. Who said that the ‘golden years’ were a time to vegetate?” (Cathie Scott) “I went to an excellent session on strategic partnerships and came away with great information to begin looking The Village at a plan for this type of funding strategy.” (Cecily Kaplan) “It was powerful to engage with over 300 people from around the country who are passionate about the Village Movement and reshaping the way we grow older in our country and our communities. Particularly useful for me, as a new program director, was to hear from other villages about their challenges and successes. It gave me many ideas for strengthening and growing our own PNA Village.” (Riana Nolet) “I came to understand that the National Village Movement is as much about community activism as about mutual-support for aging in place. The focus on the emerging importance of our demographic was really thought provoking. Most of the tools used for managing volunteer-based community support are things that PNA and other more broadly based community groups ought to be exploring.” (Jerry Scott) At their November retreat, our Village Advisory Board will be talking about specific ways to put new ideas into practice. Other committees, along with members and volunteers, will help keep our Village growing and developing. PNA Village Expansion The PNA Village has expanded its boundaries to serve residents of Broadview and Bitterlake. The PNA Village helps people stay in their homes as they age. Village Spotlight Alyssa McFarland Alyssa McFarland, who has volunteered with the Village for three years, uses her design talent to help keep the newsletter looking sharp. “Using Adobe InDesign to create the PNA Village Connections newsletter is a chance to use my skills to help people in my neighborhood connect with each other and find out what’s happening with the PNA Village. I have done page layout for newsletters and newspapers since the days of press lettering and border tape (in the 80s), and used to work for Adobe supporting InDesign, so newsletter layout is something I’m pretty comfortable with. It’s great to be able to use my knowledge and skills to be helpful to others.” - Alyssa McFarland The Village Newsletter Committee is looking for additional volunteers to contribute their writing, editing, or layout skills. The festivities begin with Woodland Park Zoo’s WildLights. Wild animals and wild places are recreated in thousands of sparkling LED lights. But that’s only the beginning of the holiday fun! To complement WildLights, the PhinneyWood business district will come to life with 200 LED-lit metal-frame monkeys that have “escaped” from WildLights. The neighborhood’s monkey season will kick-off with the lighting of the GloCone at the Phinney Center’s Air Raid Tower at 5 pm on Nov. 28. The monkeys and the GloCone will be lit through December. Look for Red Monkey Specials on Wednesdays throughout the holiday season at businesses displaying red monkeys. If you’re 12 years old or younger, solve weekly Monkey Scavenger Hunts to be entered into prize drawings. Visit monkeywood.org for clues. On Dec. 11, hop on and off the Emerald City Trolley for a monkey tour during the Art Up Art Walk. The trolley will run from 6–10 pm and stop at various locations on Greenwood and Phinney. Cost is $1/person, or a 2015 WildLights ticket for unlimited hopping. Admission can be purchased on the trolley. Last but not least, support local monkey businesses, save your receipts and enter a drawing for prizes from local businesses. Prize winners will be announced Dec. 19 during the Caroling Under Gary’s Canopy, 7418 Greenwood Ave N, from 5–6 pm. Details about all things monkey are available at monkeywood.org. It’s hard to keep up once your kids start “shedding books,” as PNA Volunteer Coordinator LeAnne Chow calls it. Her one-and-a-half year old daughter hasn’t started shedding her board books yet, but it won’t be long. So what to do with the books your children shed? Bring them to the PNA’s newest event: the Kids’ Book Exchange! This event will make its debut alongside the Mystery Book Exchange, a 20-yearold PNA staple, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Exchange. All three will be held in the Phinney Center Blue Building from 11 am-2 pm on Saturday, Feb. 27. The way it works is simple: bring in the books your kids have outgrown and swap them for something new. If you don’t have books to bring or end up leaving with more than you brought, books may be purchased for $1-2. You can also swap books between genres. PNA volunteer and local children’s book author Donna Chavis is excited to attend. “My kid is an avid reader and she’s always looking for something new,” she says about her four-year-old daughter. In the meantime, we need donations of children’s books to help seed the selection. So next time you’re cleaning out your kids’ shelves, stop by the Phinney Center and drop off gently used books. Thanks! Whittier Kids’ Preschool class practices their best listening ears for when the GSC comes to read stories Whittier Kids Connecting With the Community This Fall By Cindy Lewan and Lori Engdahl Whittier Kids is motivated to connect our students and staff with the community, and we’ve been working hard with PNA staff to make cross program community connections happen. We are thrilled to have three events marked on our calendars that incorporate all of our site’s programs, including an opportunity for family involvement. Nov. 25th: We have coordinated with PNA’s Program Director, Jeff Cornejo, to have our school-age students visit the Hot Meals program at St. John United Lutheran Church. The students will be making cookies at our site to take on the field trip to share. Our staff will be working with the students to create a short production to perform for the Hot Meals patrons, volunteers and staff. One of our goals for this visit is to cement the week’s ‘Thanks for Giving’ curriculum, which focuses on empowering the students to feel like they are able to give to others. Late November-Early December: During this time span we will be hosting a Giving Tree at Whittier Kids. We have been working with PNA’s Volunteer Coordinator, LeAnne Chow, to make 75 tags, ensuring that 75 holiday wishes will be represented on our tree. By hosting a tree we are teaching students to think about their friends and neighbors who might have unmet needs, and giving families an opportunity to connect with us and the PNA. We are looking forward to seeing the students’ excitement at meeting all 75 special requests. Dec. 15th: Our preschool and pre-k students will be getting a special visit from folks at the Greenwood Senior Center. We have organized this visit with GSC’s Program Coordinator, Ariel Burnett. This will be a music, food, and laugher filled inter-generational event that will hopefully be the first of many. People at different stages in their lives have much to share with each other and it is fabulous that we will be able to bring these programs together. We are looking forward to these events and are pleased to be working with other PNA programs. As the year continues we will be pursuing additional ways to keep our students and staff involved in the community and PNA programs. If you have suggestions on how we can do this, reach out to the Whittier Kids’ Director, Cindy Lewan, at cindyl@ phinneycenter.org. A Conversation with PNA Volunteers Mary Anne Olmstead & Bob Nolting By Rebecca Denk One early evening in late August, I sat down with PNA volunteers Mary Anne Olmstead and Bob Nolting to talk about their involvement with PNA and what has kept them on the Finance Committee for so many years. When did you first begin volunteering for the PNA? How did you land on the Finance Committee? Bob: I joined the PNA Board of Directors in 1982 and served two terms, one as Treasurer. That put me on the Finance Committee where I’ve served ever since. I get to see all of the PNA events and programs through the financials. Mary Anne: I started sometime in the late 1980s, but have not been on the board. A professional colleague asked me if I would join the Finance Committee, and I lived in Fremont at the time, so I did. And I started preparing PNA’s 990 tax form in 1988. So we couldn’t let you go! What has kept you interested and active in PNA’s Page 14 • The Review • Winter 2016 Bob Nolting and Mary Anne Olmstead fiscal oversight? Bob: I think the PNA survived the early years through financial conservativism and I’m glad to be part of the community that helped shape that. Plus I’m curious about what’s going on at PNA, and Finance has its fingers in everything… Mary Anne: I have no idea! But I have met interesting people through Finance and I enjoy their different approaches to analyzing and understanding the financials. Outside of work and PNA, what keeps you busy and happy? Mary Anne: I’m very interested in family genealogy and discovered that I am related to William Bradford. I also enjoy wind surfing but haven’t got to do so recently. Bob: I’m retired now, so enjoying life and friends. Also traveling, including to see our grandchild in Boston. What lasting effect do you hope your involvement has on PNA? Bob: I hope the PNA continues on a financially sound basis and thrives, as it’s a central part of the community. I have friends in other Seattle communities and in the suburbs who are jealous or don’t understand the unique and vital resource we have in the PNA. Mary Anne: I agree: continuity! Rebecca Denk is the Deputy Director of PNA and her financial reporting duties engage her with dedicated volunteers like Mary Anne and Bob. If you are interested in volunteering for PNA as well, contact LeAnne Chow at [email protected] or 206.783.2244. January Travel the world through the photography of Larry Heyert and Angie Hinh in January. For Heyert, the best part of being a photographer is having the opportunity to explore beautiful places and to interact with people living in the area to learn about the local environment and culture. He works to share the beauty he has experienced with others through his photographs. For Angie Hinh, traveling is one of her greatest pleasures in life. Her thirst for traveling is fueled by her curiosity, sense of adventure, and endless fascination with the world and its inhabitants. In her photographs, she works to capture this beauty – of the vibrancy of everyday life, the wonderful drama of nature, and the ancient structures steeped in historical significance. Show dates: Jan. 6–29 Opening reception: Jan. 8, 7-9 pm February In February, experience the prints of Tracy Simpson and Kappy Trigg. The hundreds of geometric shapes in Tracy Simpson’s artwork are like prayers. Their surface uniformity is like the words of a familiar prayer said over and over. The shifts in color, layering, and images parallel the emotional tones that give prayer meaning. The contextual framework for these prayers is time, both in the most literal sense that all activity takes place in the context of time, and more figuratively in that a calendar grid is the basis for virtually all of her art. Kappy Trigg has recently been working on a series of panels which make use of several monotype and related techniques and incorporate them into an individual work. These pieces incorporate traditional monotype, chine colle’, contact printing and will also incorporate relief printing in future pieces. These speak to the fact that in general, her work is about process and without exception incorporates more layering that meets the eye.
