J.W. Ray, A Historic DISD School
Lest We Forget"
The J.W. Ray Librarian, Mrs. Barbara Willis, a Retired DISD Librarian, goes beyond measure to instill in students a love of books-Reading,
Listening, and Learning. On February 28th she coordinated the: DISD Read Across Dallas" activity celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday
For 58 years, a supreme court-sanctioned public policy of separate but equal facilities for races prevailed in the school of the United
State of America. The Dallas Independent School District provided three facilities for Negroes in the area called "North Dallas", which
today is part of the Arts District and Zip code 75204.
The schools were J. W. Ray, grades 1-3, B.F. Darrell, grades 4-8, and Booker T. Washington, grades 9-12.
Public school have undergone many monumental changes since the 1060's but contrary to the myth of "genetic inferiority", students
at J.W. Ray have accomplished significant achievements. Parents and educators then knew that reading well was the key to academic success although there was no library in the school.
The J.W.Ray librarian, Ms. Barbara L. Willis, goes beyond measure to instill in students a love of books, reading, listening, and learning. On February 28th, Ray students welcomed guest readers who participated in the DISD's Read Across Dallas" celebration of Dr.
Seuss' birthday. The staff and students were asked to don Afro-centric attire and attend a Black History celebration to commemorate Black History Month and the black intellectual inroads in public education.
Today, the school in on the National Historical Registry and students at J.W. Ray continue to excel under the excellent leadership of
their principal, Onjaleke Brown.

DEAR EDITOR:
Dear Editor,
A series of long-running studies
have identified a troubling racial
gap in breast cancer mortality
rates. Research suggests that
African-American women are on
average 40 percent more likely to
die from breast cancer than
Caucasian women.
The findings are jarring for all
women, since we all have a vested
interest in defeating breast cancer
together. I, too, am considered
high-risk and reducing that risk is
important to me. That’s one of the
reasons I’m vegan.
According to Dr. Jane Plant, a
British scientist, cancer survivor,
and author of The No-Dairy Breast
Cancer Prevention Program,
“Undoubtedly, the best anti-cancer
diet would be to go completely
vegan.” Meat and dairy products
are full of cholesterol, saturated
fat, excess protein, hormones, and
other harmful substances that
increase breast cancer risk. But a
vegan diet maximizes intake of
foods that help us fight cancer—
fiber-packed grains and beans and
phytochemical-packed fruits and
vegetables.
I intend to arm myself against
breast cancer with every weapon
I’ve got. Going vegan is one of the
best decisions I’ve made, and I
hope other women will join me.

kit, please visit www.PETA.org.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR VOTE!
By Congresswoman Eddie
Bernice Johnson
I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you who
voted in the recent primary
election. Your commitment to
the voting process is crucial to
the concept of American
Democracy, in which those who
cast a ballot select candidates
they believe will best represent
their interests in the halls of
government.
I am personally honored to
have been chosen by the citizens of the 30th Congressional
District to become your candidate in the general election in
November. With God's graces,
and your continued support, I
will be victorious, and will
return to Washington as your
voice in the 114th session of
Congress.
I believe that as an elected
official, I am engaged in a
"sacred partnership" with
those who cast their ballots for
me. That partnership also
includes those who may have
voted for other candidates. As
a Democrat, I have a fundamental belief, and enduring
commitment to the values of
equality and diversity. They
have guided me since I first
entered public service.
History teaches that anyone
who does not practice those
principles will not succeed. As
Democrats we must be a party
of inclusion, and the moment
that we abandon that thinking,
our party is doomed to failure.
It is my hope that in
November, voters in Texas and
those across the country will
elect the right candidates so
that the Democrat Party will be
able to regain a majority in the
House of Representatives, and
maintain its majority in the
Senate.
A democratically controlled
House will work with a democratically led Senate to pass legislation that addresses the
issues of immigration reform, a
livable wage for all working
people, full-employment, climate control and many others.
A Congress controlled by
Democrats will also be able to
rebuff any further attempts to
repeal the Affordable Care Act,
which has provided health care
insurance to millions of uninsured Americans, and has
removed control of our health
care system from the hands of
insurance companies that have
only been interested in greater
financial profit, not the wellness
of
hardworking
Americans.
Two of the issues that we
must face are voter suppression and redistricting. We must
resist any efforts to retard the
progress that we have made in
voting rights.
This year, our community
and our country will celebrate
the monumental strides that
were made during the administration of President Lyndon
Baines Johnson, a Texan who
believed in equality and inclusion.
We must not allow those
who wish to roll back or distort
what we have accomplished to
be victorious. We must continue to work together, and be
ever vigilant in our efforts. This
is among the things you have
elected me to do, and I promise
that I shall not disappoint you.
President Obama’s Surprising Jobs Record
By George E. Curry
NNPA Columnist
Although unemployment rates
are unacceptably high, especially
for African Americans, President
Obama has done a better job
improving the jobless rate than
most critics are willing to concede.
That becomes abundantly clear
when reading FactCheck.org’s dismantling of Senator Rand Paul’s
attack on the president’s unemployment record. Just as he was
caught plagiarizing, Paul has been
caught again, this time for providing misleading information about
Obama’s accomplishments.
FactCheck.org, a project of the
Annenberg Public Policy Center at
the University of Pennsylvania, is a
nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer
advocate” for voters that aims to
reduce the level of deception and
confusion in U.S. politics.
“Sen. Rand Paul says ‘black
unemployment in America is double white unemployment’ and
‘hasn’t budged’ under President
Obama,” the research group
recounts before adding: “Actually,
the black unemployment rate is
lower now than when Obama took
office, and the gap between the
races is below the historical average. The black unemployment rate
has averaged more than double
the white rate for several decades.”
Like most believable lies, Paul’s
charges are wrapped in partial
truths.
“It is true that the black unemployment rate for November was
double the white unemployment
rate. The rate in November was
12.5 percent for blacks and 6.2 percent for whites, according to the
Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Unfortunately, this is not new,”
FactCheck.org noted.
However, it pointed out, “The
current 12.5 percent unemployment rate for blacks is unquestionably high. But by historical standards the current black unemployment rate is consistent with the
average from 1972 to 2004, and
the ratio of black-to-white unemployment rates is actually below
the historical average.”
The deeper the researchers dug,
the stronger they made Obama’s
case.
“We looked at the average rate
of unemployment for blacks and
whites in the first 58 months of the
last four presidents who were
reelected to a second term:
Obama, George W. Bush, Bill
Clinton and Ronald Reagan. (We
averaged the monthly unemployment rates from the first February
in office to the first November in
their
second
term.),”
FactCheck,org stated.
And what did they find?
“Obama had the lowest average
ratio (1.9), followed by Bush (2.1),
Clinton (2.2), and Reagan (2.3).”
Seeking to further clarify,
researchers acknowledged, “Paul
was talking about the November
unemployment rates and ratio –
not the 58-month average unemployment rate and ratio – but even
by that measure the black-to-white
unemployment ratio is lower
under Obama (2) than it was under
Reagan (2.6), Clinton (2.4) and
Bush (2.5) at this point in their second terms.”
Further dismantling Paul assertions, FactCheck.org stated, “Paul
also said that the black unemployment rate ‘hasn’t budged’ under
Obama, but it has. It reached a
high of 16.8 percent in March 2010
and dropped to a low of 12.5 percent in November – lower than the
12.7 percent rate when Obama
took office. That wasn’t the case
for two of his recent predecessors,
Reagan and Bush.
“Under Reagan, the black
unemployment rate went up a full
percentage point from 14.6 percent in January 1981 to 15.6 percent in November 1985 – even as
the white unemployment rate fell
from 6.7 percent to 5.9 percent.
Under Bush, the rates went up for
both blacks and whites. But it went
up faster for blacks, from 8.2 percent in January 2001 to 10.6 percent in November 2005 –
the
biggest increase in the black unem-
ployment rate of any of the four
presidents at that point in their
second terms. The white unemployment rate went up more than
a half percentage point, from 3.6
percent to 4.3 percent.”
Paul is a likely Republican presidential candidate in 2016. Last
week, one of his chief rivals for the
White House, Rep. Paul Ryan (RWisc.), created a controversy when
he said on former Secretary of
Education Bill Bennett’s radio
show: “We have got this tailspin of
culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just
generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the
value and the culture of work, and
so there is a real culture problem
here that has to be dealt with.”
The comment was immediately
criticized by Rep. Barbara Lee (DCalif.) as “a thinly veiled racial
attack and cannot be tolerated.”
Ryan refused to apologize for
his comments, saying in a statement later, “After reading the transcript of yesterday morning’s interview, it is clear that I was inarticulate about the point I was trying to
make. I was not implicating the culture of one community – but of
society as a whole.”
Whether a brazen affront such
as Ryan’s comment about “inner
city” Black men or Rand Paul’s
more subtle attack on Obama’s
record dealing with unemployment, the Republican Party keeps
proving it has done nothing to
deserve the support of African
Americans.
Health Crisis is Real
By Bill Fletcher, Jr.
NNPA Columnist
My friend is awaiting health
insurance. This is not academic.
She’s afraid that she might have cancer. Think about what it says about a
society that someone concerned
about a serious illness has to wait to
see whether they have the right
insurance to cover a potentially lifethreatening crisis. For those who
are procrastinating in getting your
personal health insurance, I would
suggest that you are gambling. And
while the ‘cards’ may play out in
your favor, they also may not.
My friend has to wait till she gets
her health insurance because, like
many other workers, she is
employed by a company that does
not offer health insurance. They do
not offer much in the way of timeoff either. It is all part of a larger
pattern. Each day that passes, workers find that they have to cover
more and more of what, at one
point, people took for granted. No
health insurance; no pension; no
sick time; little, if any, vacation. It
starts to feel like the days prior to
the advent of labor unions.
My friend did not expect a life
crisis. Why should she have? She
has been in great health. Full of
energy. Yet, now she is worried and
because of the way that the system
works, each moment that goes by
may be a moment necessary in diagnosing a potential life crisis. While it
may it may turn out to be nothing,
she will not know until she gets
medical attention. It is not, however, something that would be treated
in an emergency room.
Yet society says it is fine for us to
go forward this way. Some politicians say that there is no need for
any sort of national health insurance. That it costs too much for
society. But I have to ask: What is
the cost to us all when people play
Russian roulette with their health
because they do not have the sort of
coverage that most advanced soci-
eties on the planet possess?
The Affordable Care Act (socalled Obamacare) did not go nearly
far enough. Too many concessions
to the insurance companies. We
need single payer health care
(“Medicare for All”) where every
individual is guaranteed government-funded health insurance. But
for now my friend has the chance of
getting some health insurance, but
at her own expense since her
employer is focused on profit margins rather than a healthy and productive workforce.
So, she keeps waiting and the
clock keeps ticking.
One heck of a way for a supposedly civilized society to operate.
"THE PSALMIST'S THIRST FOR GOD" PSALM 63:1-11
Rev. Johnny C. Smith,
Pastor – Mount Moriah
Missionary Baptist Church
The historical background of
this psalm of lament is unknown.
Psalm 64 transcends the experience of David and looks prophetically to the time when a godly remnant will experience the time of
Jacob's trouble (Jeremiah 30:6),
the great Tribulation Period
(Revelation chapters 6-19).
Because of the wicked scheme
of his enemies, David prayed
earnestly for the Lord's protection
as he pleads, "Hear my voice, O
God, in my prayer: preserve my life
from fear of the enemy. Hide me
from the secret counsel of the
wicked; from the insurrection of
the workers of iniquity:" (vv. 11-2).
As believers in this age of grace, we
definitely need the Lord's protection in our communities, for Psalm
127:1 states, "Except the Lord build
the house, they labour in vain that
build it: except the Lord keep the
city, the watchman waketh but in
vain." It is a comforting fact to
know that we are always under
God's steadfast surveillance.
In verses 3-6, David revealed the
malicious attacks of the wicked,
plots that revealed the nature of
who they were. Observe their tactics in verse 5, "They encourage
themselves in an evil matter: they
commune of laying snares privily;
they say, Who shall see them?"
Although they may scheme and be
cunning, God will bring their plans
to naught (vv. 7-8). Their end is
revealed in verse 7, "But God shall
shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded."
The punishment of the Lord on
the wicked will have a profound
effect on the righteous, resulting
in the righteous trusting and praising God (vv. 9-10). The righteous
resolve in verse 10 states, "The
righteous shall be glad in the LORD,
and shall trust in Him; and all the
upright in heart shall glory."
In conclusion, David knew that
the Lord was his steadfast deliverer, which prompted him to praise
the Lord, for Psalm 71:4-6 says,
"Deliver me, O my God, out of the
hand of the wicked, out of the
hand of the unrighteous and cruel
man. For thou art my hope, O Lord
GOD: thou art my trust from my
youth. By thee have I been holden
up from the womb: thou art He
that took me out of my mother's
bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee." Just as David, and
because the Lord has delivered us,
we need to praise Him.
May God Bless!
A Little Bit of Faith: : Can You Wait on God?
By Colleen White
"I waited patiently for the Lord;
H"I waited patiently for the Lord;
He turned to me and heard my cry"
(Psalm 40:1). Have you ever been
in a situation which you needed to
have an answer right away?
Instead, you had to wait-and wait,
and wait. Most of the time, however, we don't wait patiently for
God to answer. Often we want to
rush God and place Him on our
time schedule.
But waiting on the Lord can help
our faith to grow. God wants us to
live by faith and not by sight. The
only way we can grow is when we
are unable to see how our situation will change. It is during these
difficult situations, that we find
ourselves in we begin to really lean
on our Heavenly father.
It's easy to praise God when
things are going well. It is more difficult to praise Him when things
are not going according to plan.
Sometimes we have to wait years
in order to get a response from
God about something we have
been praying about. For example,
King David waited for many years
before he was crowned king. David
learned to wait on God. David said
in Psalm 27, "Wait for the Lord; be
strong and take heart and wait for
the Lord" (Psalm 27: 14).
Therefore, if you're in a tight
spot, wait on the Lord and He will
direct the way you should go. So
now what are your going to do?
Are you willing to wait and hear
what God has to say? Or are you
going to rush into the situation
anyway? Decisions, decisions-I
know what I am going to do. I'm
going to wait on God. Amen?
Amen.

MR. CLYDE L. (CHUCK) WILLIAMS
1929- 2014
Clyde
L.
(Chuck)
Williams was born to
Oscar
and
Sylena
Williams on November
20, 1929, in Dallas,
Texas. His parents preceded him in death.
Clyde united with St.
Paul AME Church at an
early age. He attended
Kindergarten at St. Paul
AME Church, Phyllis
Wheatley Elementary,
and Lincoln High School
where he was very active
as a football and tennis
player and many other
activities.
He
received
his
Bachelor of Arts in
Political Science and
pledged Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity at Southern
University in Baton
Rouge, Louisiana.
After serving his country with distinction and
upon receiving an honorable discharge, he started working for the
United States Postal
Service and worked on
his Master's degree at
Bishop College extension
in Dallas, Texas, as he
prepared to marry the
love of his life, Miss Ada
Lee Gipson, on June 8,
1957. Chuck worked
faithfully for the US
Postal Service where he
retired after 35 years
and later retired from
DISD as a specialist in
Security after 10 years of
service.
Chuck was a person
many think of as a quiet
man, but he was a magnificent man. One whom
on one ever left without
learning something new
or given a new way to
think about any given
subject, ranging from
politics, sports, history,
etc. this man had a
wealth of knowledge
that he loved to share.
He left to cherish his
life: a loving, devoted,
dedicated wife of 56
years, Ada L. Williams;
son, Adrian D. Williams
of Dallas, Texas; sister,
Erma Baylor (Orlando) of
Washington DC; three
lovely granddaughters,
Crystal, Aire'ale, and

host of other relatives
and friends.
