From the Principal’s Desk
For many, this weekend is the most important one on the calendar. I
refer to ANZAC day as our day of remembrance for everyone who has
served national duty for Australia. This year is of special significance
being the 100 year anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. Our school
leaders, Ms Keating and myself attended a special ANZAC day
ceremony today hosted by Lilydale Heights Secondary College. Our
students presented a wreath and Toni Pinto shared the story of her great
uncle who fought during WWII. On Tuesday, we also hosted special
guests who presented to our Level 5 students. experience of War,. I
would like to thank Alan and Sarah, who are Ms Turner’s relations, for
sharing experiences of War in particular the those in Borneo during
W.W11. Our students were captivated by some incredible accounts of
survival against the odds.
As you are aware, our school has been the recipient of $1.28 million for
school building works. Along with School Council, staff are working
very hard to ensure that funding will be maximised to benefit our
students. As it is targeted primarily at building work we still require a
great deal of time, money and resources spent on developing the
grounds. If you have any ideas, interests or even suggestions about
what is needed or what you want or would like to see in the school
grounds, we would appreciate your input. Thanks to members of our
school council we will be holding a planning/ ideas session leading into
the development of a Master Plan for the grounds at school. This might
include, redeveloping the driveway, including the car park and
decongesting the ‘Kiss and Go’ zone. It may include redeveloping or
redesigning the playground spaces. It might include revamping the
veggie garden. If you have skills in design, architecture, horticulture,
graphic design, gardening or are a landscape designer we would value
your expertise. The information session will be held on Tuesday 12th
May at 6:30 pm. We are very interested in hearing your ideas and
would like to encourage you to invite others who may have made a
suggestion about what we can do to come along.
I would like to do a big ‘shout out’ on behalf of our wonderful PFA to
Big Mates Pizza of Croydon. Greg, the owner of Big Mates Piazza has
chosen our school to be the recipient of 50 free pizzas which will be
used as a school fundraiser later this term. Please keep an eye out in
newsletters particularly in the PFA column for further details. If you are
ever in Croydon Market Shopping Centre be sure to call in and let him
know you are from Manchester Primary School, I’m sure he will do
you a great deal on pizzas.

“Lest we Forget”
I spent a lovely
weekend in Torquay
last Saturday as my
husband was riding
in the Otway Classic
bike ride. While
there, we read about
a re-enactment
demonstration at
Barwon Park Mansion just out of Winchelsea. There
were several presentations being held which related to
wars in which Australia has fought. In particular, there
was a focus on WW1 given the upcoming ANZAC Day
Centenary.
I stood beside a row of trenches that had been dug to
represent the trenches on Gallipoli and watched ‘soldiers’
preparing to represent the Australian and Turkish troops
just prior to the Battle of ‘The Nek’. These ‘soldiers’
were readying themselves much as the soldiers 100 years
ago would have been doing. A young boy in front of me
asked, “Are these the ‘goodies’ and are those over there
the baddies?”. His mother replied, “Well that really
depends on your point of view.” Doesn’t that just say
it all?
As a lay student of history, I have read and researched
quite a bit about the social and political lead up to WW1
and the direct impact of individual and national
insecurities and hubris. In the light of the consequences
of their choices and actions; untold death and devastation,
these are behaviours of which we need to be extremely
mindful.
Yes, ‘Lest we Forget,’ all those who suffered and died,
but also ‘Lest we Forget’ the potential consequences of
our own choices and actions and the choices and actions
on those whom we impact.
As I participate in the remembrances surrounding the
100th anniversary this April 25th I am hopeful that we
may tell each other, tell our friends and tell our children
about the importance of valuing ‘the other’, of putting
aside our self-righteousness, our pride, our anger and our
self justification to see things from the others point of
view and to try to respect their journey.
WW1 recounts truces at various times; the Christmas
truce, the truce at Gallipoli to bury the dead and how the
opposing soldiers met and discovered something of each
other’s humanity and of their life. Let’s work toward
creating that understanding in the way we treat others and
in how we model our disappointments and anger with our
children, so that we can build for them a world where we
no longer have to create remembrances for those who
have had to pay the ultimate price.
Lest we Forget!
