Charging Best Practices
Submitted by Cellcom
Your smartphone keeps you connected, entertained and safe and likely rarely leaves your side. Keeping your device charged for your daily activities isn’t rocket science, but
there are a few things to know to safely and efficiently power your device.
When it comes to charging your smartphone you should only use a charger
that is approved for your device. For Apple devices, reputable brands will
include a statement that the charger is “made for iPad, iPhone and iPod”.
Manufacturers have to get approval from Apple to use this language, ensuring the quality of the product. Micro USB charging does not have a standard, however the new QuickCharge 2.0 requires certification through Underwriters Laboratory (a safety organization) to meet compatibility and interoperability requirements. Approved products are listed here and includes Cellcom’s
Ventev solution.
For the fastest charge, you should be looking at the max output of your charger and max input of your
device. Many devices can charge at rates higher than 1 amp, but the in-box charging solution may only
have a 1 amp output, leading to longer charge times. Selecting an approved 2.4 amp rapid-charging solution will allow you to charge your device as fast as possible. If you purchase a third-party charger,
cross-check the output to achieve optimal results. On a PC or laptop, USB ports are often have a limited
output which can mean a slower charge than using a power outlet with an approved cord.
You may remember a time when you were instructed to let your battery drain until it was dead and
not to allow it to sit on the charger after it’s reached a full charge. Smartphones today are equipped
with lithium-ion batteries, which are not affected by either of these practices. However, unplugging
your phone and your charger is a good practice for reducing overall energy consumption. You also do not
need to put your device in airplane mode to get the fastest charge. Doing so will only slightly increase
the speed of the charge (less than five minutes if you’re going from 0 to 100 percent). Most users find
it’s not worth the loss of functionality.
Portable chargers are a great tool for those who need to charge a device on the go. Simply charge the
portable units and keep them with you to charge your device when you may be away from a power outlet or USB port. There a variety of solutions available, including MyCharge AmpMax and MyCharge
AmpMini from Cellcom.
