FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Chamber's Community Forum was held
on Wednesday, November 20th and it raised a
number of issues which we will face as a community as we move forward. The forum's
theme was "Restaurants, Retail, and Residents
In Clintonville…A Partnership for Success,"
and our panel of business people and residents
talked both about the development process and
the importance of the partnership. As we
move forward in creating an economic development vision for our community, it will only
succeed with a business-residents partnership.
The economic success of our community obviously depends on the health of High Street and
Indianola Ave. That health ultimately depends
upon an entrepreneur taking a risk. While the
Chamber, the Commission, and CI, can do
some things to encourage and assist those businesses, the final decision is up to the risk takers. That is why we devoted a full page in this
issue to recognize those businesses that have
already taken a risk to move a number of
projects forward. It is important that residents
understand what is involved with that risk, and
it is important that businesses understand the
expectations of the residents in the community. Our forum was designed to start the discussion. Not all will agree on all of the issues,
but it is important that each understands the
expectations of the other. The Chamber will
continue to be an organization that represents
the business community, but understands the
importance of listening to and working with
the residents. Thanks to all of those who took
the time to attend, and thank you again to our
panel members.

dollars contracts with young super
stars? How do you create one of the most successful business operations in professional
sports? It's all in a days work for CBJ
President and General Manager Doug
MacLean. He will talk about the "business
side of hockey" at the Clintonville Chamber's
monthly luncheon on Tuesday, December 17,
at 11:30 at the Clintonville Woman's Club.
MacLean was named Blue Jackets General
Manager in February of 1998 and set about
the task of putting the franchise together. His
sixteen years of experience in the National
Hockey League, in a variety of coaching and
personnel positions, helped make the CBJ one
of the leagues most exciting new teams. Prior
to joining Columbus, MacLean was the head
coach of the Florida Panthers. In 1996 he was
named Hockey News "Coach of the Year"
after leading the Panthers to the Stanley Cup
finals in his first season at the helm. He has

also been the winning
coach in two NHL All Star
games.
A native of Prince Edward
Island, MacLean, he began
his coaching career as an
assistant with the London

Knights of the Ontario
Hockey League, while working on his master's degree in educational psychology at the
University of Western Ontario. After one year
as the head coach of New Brunswick
University, he joined the staff of the St. Louis
Blues. MacLean was also an assistant coach
with Washington and Detroit.
MacLean and his wife Jill, son Clark and
daughter MacKenzie reside in Worthington.

Community Panel Raises Issues for Future
Over seventy Clintonville business people and
residents attended the Chamber's Community
Forum on Nov. 20, to hear a panel discuss the
development process.
Jack Lucks of
Continental Real Estate and Mark Heath of
Chipotle Mexican Grille discussed what developers and businesses look for when they are
putting together a project. Lucks stressed the
importance of finding a differential advatange,
land assembly, and partnering with city government. Heath defined the "center of
Clintonville" from his company's perspective
as EN Broadway and High St. While many

Community Band Establishes
New Holiday Tradition
The Clintonville Community Band is holding
its first annual Community Holiday Concert on
Sunday December 8th at 4:00 p.m. at the North
High School Auditorium, 100 Arcadia Avenue
in Clintonville. Admission to the concert is free
but the Band will take up a freewill offering and
collect canned goods for the Clintonville
Beechwold Community Resources Center.
The Band will play a host of familiar holiday
favorites and will lead a Christmas Carol Sing
Along. Mozarts Bakery and Cafe will be selling
assorted pastries and treats at intermission. The
50-member ensemble is directed by Rick
Burkart. The concert is sponsored by the Polar
Bear Alumni Association and Ackerman Credit

Clintonville Night at Nationwide Arena
The Chamber's Networking Committee and
the Columbus Landsharks of the National
Lacrosse League have teamed up for
"Clintonville Night at Nationwide Arena" on
Friday, Dec. 27. The N.L.L. is the fastest game
on two feet and you can be part of it. The
Landsharks will open their third season in
Columbus against the New York Saints. Special
reduced price tickets are available at the
Chamber office. There
will be a special
"Clintonville Chamber
Pre Game Party" on the
Bud Light Terrace starting at 6:00 p.m. and the
game starts at 7:30 p.m. Contact the Chamber

Clintonville businesses and residents tend to
think of our community from a north-south
view, Heath also pointed out the importance
of the east-west arteries when firms are defining their potential market.
Both Teater and Skora felt it was important for
businesses considering Clintonville to be up
front and open with residents regarding their
intentions. While both pointed out the many
positives regarding Clintonville as
the main reason the have lived
here for many years, both felt
there is certainly room for additional stores and services for both
residents and people from nearby
areas.
Questions submitted by those
attending the forum ranged from
parking issues, to traffic and
speed limits, to alcohol ballot
issues. While the forum may have raised more
questions than provide answers, it may have
been the starting point for additional discussions on the direction of our community.
Discussions that will have to include business,
residents and government.

Over the past three months The Chamber, the
Clintonville Area Commission and Clintonville
Incorporated sponsored three important forums
focusing on the future of our community.
While these meeting were important, we sometimes lose sight of the exciting things that are
happening on High St. right now! New businesses continue to locate in Clintonville and
several exciting projects are in various stages of
construction.
