QUARTERLY PARTNERSHIP REPORT Q3 July 1 – September 30, 2014 “AFE and SPS will collaborate in identifying private educational investors and in securing corporate and foundation support consistent with district goals and priorities.” - Memorandum of Understanding, Alliance for Education & Seattle Public Schools The following itemizes the investments and activities undertaken by the Alliance for Education in partnership with Seattle Public Schools during the 3rd quarter of 2014 (July - September). Investments & Support: At a Glance $725,390 in funds for SPS in Q3 $1,311,169 in funds for SPS in 2014 Over $152 million raised since 1995 STRATEGIC WORK: INVESTING IN LEADERS AND SYSTEMS IN SPS Seattle Teacher Residency Secured $339,293 in new funding for the Seattle Teacher Residency ($2,263,211 total to date) Sought $160,000 in additional funding (funder decisions by Q4) Supporting 21 Cohort 1 graduates hired by SPS into 9 high poverty (Title I) schools Initiated 32 Cohort 2 residents in 7 high poverty (Title I) SPS schools Launched recruitment for Cohort Three, 2015-2016 Received invitation to testify before Congressional staff on merits of residency model Led site visits for current and prospective funders, including two public funding sources: - July 16: Puget Sound Educational Services District (Race to the Top) - July 30: WA Commission for National & Community Service (Americorps) Rachelle Moore, STR Mentor, and Kristen Le, STR Cohort One graduate, were invited to testify before congressional staff on October 7. Human Resources Redesign Awarded $82,500 to SPS to fund continued participation in the Urban Schools Human Capital Academy Principal Leadership Development Co-funded and participated in five professionally facilitated design meetings with SPS leadership and potential project partners to establish comprehensive principal pipeline initiative at SPS Provided up to $1,000 for Interim Superintendent Dr. Larry Nyland’s convenings with principals Ongoing relationship-building with the philanthropic community Convened Philanthropic Partners in Public Education (PPPE) – the Bezos Family Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Biller Family Foundation, Boeing Company, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, Nesholm Family Foundation, Raikes Foundation and Seattle Foundation – to discuss resource needs with the Superintendent and his team. “I have grown more in my effectiveness as a teacher during this STR year than in three years of teaching because of the reflective process.” - Seattle Teacher Residency mentor teacher SERVICE WORK: PROVIDING FISCAL SERVICES TO SCHOOLS AND PROGRAMS Q3 Fiscal Services: At a Glance $2.5 million held in secure accounts for 200+ school groups $276,742 received through 529 donations Personal consultations provided to PTA and other volunteers Additional Service Work $88,847 subgranted to Aki Kurose, Asa Mercer and Denny middle schools (Nesholm Middle School Literacy) $85,000 granted to SPS to fund K-12 literacy alignment with Common Core State Standards $55,000 to Queen Anne Elementary through designation by winner of Microsoft Technical Recognition Award $36,000 to Wedgewood Elementary through designation by winner of Microsoft Technical Recognition Award $21,750 provided to support the Confucius Institute $13,500 awarded as scholarships to nine SPS scholar athletes (101 Club) $2,500 to SPS through the Seattle Foundation Reading Award SPIRIT WORK: CELEBRATING SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN OUR COMMUNITY Congratulations to Lyon Terry, 4th grade teacher at Lawton Elementary, named 2014 Washington State Teacher of the Year!
