Largest Dash Yet - Gift of Life Donor Program
Largest Dash Yet
Makes 2011 a Success
The 16th Annual Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness
was held this past April 17th, and welcomed more than 7,000
participants! The Dash offered a 3K walk, and both a 5K and 10K
run, to help raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Thanks
to the support of participants like you, Gift of Life Donor Program
and Transplant Foundation raised more than $500,000 for
educational initiatives!
Each April, Gift of Life celebrates National Donate Life Month
by offering a variety of events—including the Dash—to let the
community know about the importance of organ and tissue
donation, and the urgent need for donor designation in our region.
Individuals and teams gather to participate in the Dash each year,
and more than 300 teams were formed to commemorate a loved
one who gave or received the gift of life.

The Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness has become
Gift of Life’s signature event to celebrate National Donate Life
Month, and our biggest-ever turnout let us know that we’re
succeeding. But with more than 6,400 men, women and children
on the waiting list for life-saving organ transplants in our region,
the need for registered donors is more critical than ever.
If you missed this year’s Dash, there are plenty of ways you
can help us get the word out about donation all year long.
To volunteer with Gift of Life Donor Program, or learn more about
donation, please visit us at www.donors1.org or 800-DONORS-1.

Partying for a Purpose:
THE Party Takes Over Four Seasons
Rarely does one have an opportunity to attend a fabulous party
while still supporting an important cause and helping to save lives.
Those attending “THE Party,” however, were able to do just that.
Donors Are Heroes is a group of dedicated friends and volunteers,
led by Don and Renee Freeman, that came together after Don
received a heart transplant. Every spring, the group hosts
“THE Party,” which took place this year at the Four Seasons Hotel
in Philadelphia. For the past nine years, THE Party has taken place
during National Donate Life Month in April to help raise money
for creating public awareness and education and the importance of
registering to be an organ and tissue donor.
THE Party was an exciting extravaganza with food, drinks, dancing,
and more. The Four Seasons Philadelphia was perfectly decorated
for the event, and seven well-known restaurants in the region
donated the delicious food served throughout the evening, helping to
make THE Party a smashing success. Those in attendance were also
treated to taking red carpet style photos, a guest appearance from
Miss Philadelphia, and music from DJ Eddie Tully. Additionally,
stations were set up where those in attendances could register to
become organ and tissue donors during the event.
This year’s party had record-breaking attendance with over 475
guests, and raised more than $100,000 to support important
public education campaigns such as High School Student Summits,
the Family House, and the “It’s About Life” Grants to houses of
worship and faith-based organizations.
Donors Are Heroes wishes to thank the following restaurants and
businesses for participating in this year’s hit party: Cabot Cheese,
Table 31, Village Belle, Zahav, Sampan, Water Works Restaurant and
Lounge, Bistrot La Minette, Four Seasons Hotel, Philadelphia
Catering, Fountain Restaurant Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia,
Night Kitchen Bakery, Naked Chocolate, Famous 4th Street
Cookies, the Painted Truffle, Bredenbeck’s, Ciao Bella, Capital
Wine and Spirits, Karamoor Estate, Pravda Vodka, Cashman &
Associates, Evantine Design and WT Graphics.
Gift of Life and Donors Are Heroes would also like to congratulate
THE Party’s 2011 Heroes of the Year, Nicole Cashman and
Brian Kappra. This award is given to individuals in recognition of
their commitment to promoting organ and tissue donation both
with Donors Are Heroes and in the community.
We would also like to thank THE Party Co-Chairpersons Eric Allen
and Lauren Huezo for their hard work and dedication to Donors
Are Heroes continued efforts to raise awareness for donation.

Volunteer Recognition Ceremony Honors
Gift of Life’s VIPs!
Every year, Gift of Life Donor Program and Gift of Life Family House
take time to thank all of its dedicated volunteers for an amazing

importance of donation in their communities. This past spring,
Gift of Life honored 2010’s dedicated volunteers Hollywood-style,
with awards and a banquet at the Crowne Plaza Valley Forge.
Gift of Life’s volunteers were greeted on the red carpet, with
paparazzi-style photographers snapping shots of smiling faces.
The award winners for the year were: Dorothy Crane Award for
outstanding commitment from a donor family member, Bill and
Chris Hankee, Paul Penkala and Patricia Nelson; Joseph Colfer
Donor Awareness Award for youth commitment to donor
awareness, Zachary Mandell; Julian V. Hawkins III Award for

Lehigh Valley Coalition for Organ and Tissue Donation’s
During National Donate Life Month each April, the Lehigh Valley
Coalition for Organ and Tissue Donation holds a poster and essay
contest to help educate students about organ and tissue donation.
In conjunction with Gift of Life Donor Program, Lehigh Valley
Coalition invites area students to compete for awards and
recognition by submitting original works to raise awareness about
organ and tissue donation.
Middle school students are asked to submit creative posters
focusing on organ and tissue donation, and high school students are
encouraged to write thought-provoking essays on the importance of
donation. Once the contest entries are judged, prizes are presented
during an awards ceremony to the students who had the winning
poster and essay entries.
“Now in its 13th year, the Lehigh Valley Coalition’s poster
contest allows talented middle school artists to use their skills to
encourage people to register as organ and tissue donors,” says Mark
Richardson, member of the Lehigh Valley Coalition and head of
Essay/Poster Contest
the poster contest. “Through their work the students, their parents,
friends, and teachers will realize that thousands of individuals in
the region are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant and that
the act of donation truly means the gift of life.”
The Lehigh Valley Coalition is excited to announce the 2010-2011
contest winners. Middle School Poster Contest: 1st Place,
Mercedes Dayan, 2nd Place, Faith Befano, and 3rd Place, Jennifer
Stank. Honorable Mention: Alison Walck, Abby Pilla, Emily Pilla,
and Max Ebert. High School Essay Contest: 1st Place Reyna Pacis,
a 2nd place tie to Austin Vasko and Caitlin Keim, and 3rd Place
Caroline Heimerl. Honorable Mention: Robin Rowland and
Cristina Carosiello. See Reyna Pacis’ winning essay on page 7, in

Boxer’s Legacy Saves Lives, Inspires
Boxer Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez came to Philadelphia in late
November 2009, hoping to secure a superbantam weight title at
the Blue Horizon. But when injuries sustained in the ring brought
him to Hahnemann University Hospital, his family never dreamed
he’d lose his life. As the Rodriguez family rallied around their
fallen husband, brother and father, they immediately considered
donation, and the positive impact that Paco could have on those
needing critical organ transplants.
Because the Rodriguez family said “yes” to life, Paco saved five
individuals and became a hero in the eyes of several awaiting
life-saving transplants: double-lung recipient Ashley Owens, heart
recipient Alexis Sloan, kidney/pancreas recipient Vicky Davis,
liver recipient Megan Kingsley and Paco’s own uncle in Chicago,
Ramon Tejeda.
Rodriguez’ story compelled ESPN’s E:60 news magazine to bring
Paco’s story to life in their April 2011 piece, “Hero.” For the short
documentary film, ESPN flew Paco’s recipients to Chicago, IL,
where his family resides. The donor family—including his wife,
Sonia and baby daughter, Ginette, had the opportunity to meet
his recipients for the first time on-camera—an event which was
captured in E:60’s piece, “Hero.”
To view the piece, and learn more about Paco’s story, and

Wrapped
in hugs
Gift of Life Donor Program’s Wrapped in Hugs initiative has been a great success.
But we still need YOUR help!
We have currently collected 105 wraps for this amazing program,
but we still need nearly 300 more by October 1, 2011. Gift of Life
Donor Program is reaching out to the community, in hopes of
obtaining more than 400 beautiful, hand-crafted afghans. These
wraps are a wonderful opportunity to reach out to donor families
and offer comfort, or say “thank you.” The “Wrapped in Hugs”
program was inspired by the 2010 National Donor Recognition
Ceremony in Madison, Wisconsin, where each donor family present
was given a handmade wrap. Receiving a wrap was very meaningful
for the attendees, and we would like to repeat this heartfelt gesture
at our five local Donor Recognition Ceremonies this fall. Nearly
1/4 of the way to our goal, we need your help to reach 400!
Gift of Life staff members are excited about this “warm” initiative
and are personally getting involved with “Wrapped in Hugs” to
help the organization attain its goal. On Friday, May 13, 2011,
Marie Minarik, wife of a liver recipient, came to Gift of Life and
taught two knitting classes for staff members who were interested
in learning how to knit a wrap for the “Wrapped in Hugs” program.
If you do not knit or crochet, you can still help by donating yarn.
All of the information about the “Wrapped in Hugs” program can
be found on our website at www.donors1.org/donors/wrapped. Or,
contact Lara Moretti in Family Support Services at 800-DONORS-1
ext. 1103 or [email protected].

“Wrapped in Hugs” program.
We would like to say thank you to all of our volunteers
and supporters who have either sent in a wrap or have
pledged to make a wrap for this special program.
Gift of Life Welcomes 2011 American Transplant Congress
Attendees at the Pre-Meeting Symposium, “Leading
Practices in Organ Donation and Preservation” met
at Gift of Life Saturday, April 30, for a lunch and facility tour.
The American Transplant Congress participants were
provided with an in-depth look at organ procurement,
and a tour of the state-of-the-art Gift of Life facility, as
well as the new Gift of Life Family House. Leading experts
in transplantation from Australia, China, Japan, Tunisia,
Russia, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, United Kingdom
and the United States attended this event.
President and CEO of Gift of Life, Howard M. Nathan
with Anne-Christine Croon and Jenny Olofson, transplant
coordinators from Stockholm, Sweden who represented
Karolinska University at the conference. The women toured
the facilities, received a comprehensive overview of
the different departments and spent several days after the
conference learning about Gift of Life success strategies
and TC staffing models, and more about the Donate Life
public education and community outreach campaigns.

University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, with President
and CEO of Gift of Life, Howard M. Nathan. Dr. Gabel visited
for several days after the conference to tour Gift of Life
facilities. The two men are holding a sign from when
Dr. Gabel’s father – a close colleague of Howard’s and

Spring Brings Record-Breaking Donor
Numbers to Gift of Life

Why is it important to register as an organ donor?
Long past October 31st, you still felt compelled to
don that mask and costume, leap off your couch,
and dart around your room in pseudo-flight. You
were only a little kid then – no, a superhero, you
adamantly insisted – and in those days, a colorful cape and a
brave imagination were all you needed to be ready to save the
world. But years later, you’ve outgrown your cape and costume,
both physically and mentally, and now, your mask resides in a
box in your closet alongside your old toys and nostalgic, childish
dreams of becoming a real life hero. Growing up seems to bring
us the disappointing realization that none of us can ever really
become Superman or Wonder Woman. However, some of us do
not realize that heroes do not merely exist in the imaginations
of little kids. Each and every day one of us can still live out our
childhood dreams of becoming a hero and saving a life by simply
registering to be an organ donor.
As a registered organ donor, you may not be in hand-to-hand
combat with evil villains or about to stop a flaming meteor from
obliterating the planet, but you will still be a hero in every sense
of the word. According to the Mayo Clinic, the largest transplant
center in America, a single registered organ donor has the
potential to provide life-saving transplants to up to 8 people.
It takes a Herculean amount of courage and generosity for an
individual to donate the gift of life to those in danger of illness and
death, and this self-sacrificial aspect of organ donation is what
true heroism is all about.
Unfortunately, the number of candidates waiting for an organ
donation far exceeds the number of organ donors available.
More than 110,000 people are currently on the waiting list for
transplants, and each day, approximately 20 people perish waiting
for transplants that were unable to take place due to the shortage
of donors. (“Organdonor.gov – Statistics and Facts”) Where are
our superheroes when we really need them? Are we simply going
to leave them stuck in the fanciful imaginings of children?
The people on the transplant waiting list are not looking for
Superman or Wonder Woman. Anyone can be a potential organ
donor, regardless of gender, size and age, and by choosing to donate the gift of life to someone in need, even an ordinary person
can play an extraordinary, critical role in rescuing innocent lives.
Gift of Life Donor Program was proud to announce record numbers
for donation this past spring. In March 2011, Gift of Life helped
to coordinate gifts from 53 individuals, who gave 123 life-saving
organs and hundreds of life-enhancing tissues to residents awaiting
transplants. While these numbers are remarkable, and represent
the highest number of donors ever coordinated in one month
by an organ procurement organization in the United States,
Gift of Life is most grateful to the donors and their families who
made this possible by saying “yes” to donation.
Earlier this winter, Gift of Life set another record
by coordinating the highest numbers ever recorded
by a regional organ procurement organization
(OPO) in US history for a four-month time period.
From December 2010 through March 2011, Gift of Life supported
organ donations from 165 deceased persons and coordinated
444 organs transplanted over a four-month period.
“The families who said ‘yes’ to donation have saved lives, and we offer
them our heartfelt gratitude,” says Howard M. Nathan, President and
CEO for Gift of Life. “They have helped make an impact in the critical
shortage of organ and tissue donors—more than 6,400 men, women
and children remain on the waiting list in this region. While we are
hopeful about the progress made this spring, we remain dedicated
to encouraging everyone to learn more about donation, and register
as a donor when renewing a driver’s license or state I.D. card.”
During its more than 36 years of service, Gift of Life has coordinated
over 31,000 vital organ transplants and hundreds of thousands
of tissue transplants in our region.
To register as a donor, please visit our website at:
www.donors1.org/register
So, go ahead and register to be an organ donor. Put your cape
back on and get ready to save a life.

Titled, “You Made it Happen! 30,000 Transplants & Counting!” the
reunion brought together Gift of Life Donor Program President and
CEO Howard M. Nathan, and co-founders Dr. Clyde F. Barker and
Dr. Aaron Bannett, to receive honors for their contributions to organ
and tissue donation, both in this region and throughout the world.
Dr. Clyde Barker initiated the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania’s (HUP) transplant program, by performing the facility’s
first kidney transplant in 1966—the oldest transplant in this country
that is still currently functioning. Since that time, Dr. Barker has acted
as Chief of Transplantation Surgery, Chief of Vascular Surgery, John

“Ruth Cooper is one of most positive, determined and organized
individuals we’ve worked with. Last year, she chaired the
committee for an annual fundraising event benefiting the
Family House and although this required a lot of attention and
determination – I never saw anything but a smile on her face. Ruth
is very willing to help out with whatever projects are going on and
frequently reminds us that they are just a phone call away if they
are needed. We know when we welcome families home to the
Family House, we’ll always have a sense of security knowing we
can count on her for help, volunteer support, and a warm smile.”
Award recognizes outstanding dedication in serving as a role model
for families; turning a personal tragedy into actionable service to
support other families; and lovingly engaging their entire family to
tirelessly support and promote the critical need for organ donation
and the extraordinary mission of Gift of Life Family House.
“Many people may not be shocked in our decision to choose this
family as the recipient of this award. It’s hard to believe
that it has only been one year since this family has been
involved with Gift of Life and the Family House …… The amount
of achievement and service performed not only by this family but
their community rivals what some people do in decades.
“Joe has volunteered at several Family House fundraisers and
also recently sat on a planning committee for a very successful
fundraising event. Not only was he a huge help and a very hard
worker on the committee but he was also responsible for securing
the largest sponsor – making this one of the most successful annual
events to date. Joe has also connected us with several important
company heads for in-kind and financial contributions. I frequently
receive e-mails and phone calls of support and encouragement
from him reminding me that there are endless possibilities and any
goal is achievable with hard work and determination.” – Sara Cohen

those tasks are and ask for help if needed. When you are doing
something for someone you love and you are distressed by the task,
you may become resentful or overwhelmed due to caregiving.
Caregiver Lifeline
Spotlight
3. Make a “care plan.”
This may seem time consuming. A care plan is somewhat like a journal
that documents your daily tasks and appointments. You can do it as
frequently (daily) or infrequently (monthly) as there is a need. A careplan
will help you organize your days and allow you to see what days/weeks
you will need help and what days you have more free time for yourself.
by Talia Giordano, MSW, LSW
Gift of Life Family House Social Worker
Keeping Your Relationship with the Patient Healthy
4. Take time for yourself.
5. Take time together.
It is important for any caregiver to take time for themselves so they don’t
forget what makes them happy. It is also important to take time with the
patient unrelated to caregiving. If the patient is your spouse, have a date
night every so often, or make a play date with your child. This should help
keep you focused on why you love yourself and why you love the patient.
It’s important to have a plan for maintaining a healthy relationship
with the person receiving your care. Most likely, you decided to be a
caregiver because of the relationship you had with the patient prior to
becoming their caregiver. For instance, you fell in love with your spouse
before you decided to be their transplant caregiver, or he/she was your
child before you were his/her transplant caregiver. It is essential to try
to nurture the relationship you had before becoming their caregiver.
Here are a few steps that can help you do that.
6. Ask for help.
Sometimes we need help from others, like family, friends, the social
worker, or the transplant team. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you try
to do everything alone you may become fatigued, burnt-out, stressed, or
depressed, which could cause resentment towards the patient. There are
transplant social workers who can assist with some of the difficult issues
related to the transplant process. Respite care for time off may be an
option, an aid or in-home nurse may also be an option, even individual,
family, or couples counseling may be helpful. There are many resources
available, so you don’t have to feel alone. The ultimate goal is to allow you
to feel more comfortable and satisfied being a caregiver for your loved one.
1. Identify what you can and can’t do for the patient.
2. Identify what caregiving responsibilities cause you distress.
You may not be able to be a caregiver 24 hours a day due to other
responsibilities, so don’t forget those other responsibilities, and let
the transplant patient know that during those times you are unable to
provide care. When you are able to determine what specific times
you can and can’t provide care, it will set up boundaries which can
help you avoid becoming overwhelmed. Similarly, there may be some
caregiving responsibilities that are distressing to you. Determine what

Marc Summers and Marc Vetri Help Launch Home Cook Heroes Program
The Home Cook Heroes Program at Gift of Life Family House
was officially launched on Monday, April 4, 2011. The Food
Network’s Marc Summers and “Iron Chef” Marc Vetri hosted the
event, along with Starr Restaurants, and invited more than 120
restaurant and food service representatives to learn more about
Home Cook Heroes.
LEFT: Ace Conference Center GM Daniel Briones, Feastivities Executive Chef Andy Snow,
Home Cook Heroes will invite volunteers from the public,
community groups and businesses to come in and help the
Family House provide home cooked dinner for up to 30 families,
in addition to brunch on the weekends. Summers and Vetri
invited members of the restaurant and culinary communities to
sign up and commit to providing meals for the program. During
the event, more than 20 restaurants and food industry businesses
signed up to become a part of the Home Cook Heroes.

offered support and encouragement to the Family House, asking guests from the restaurant
industry to give back through “Home Cook Heroes.”
Kudos to our sponsors and the Home Cook Heroes Committee for
putting together a fantastic kickoff.

NJ Students Raise Over $6,000 for
Gift of Life Family House
at the
Family House
On February 20th, the Lives Saving Lives Club of The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, held its 3rd Annual Organ
Donor Awareness Benefit Dinner. This event is 100% promoted
and planned by students who on their own provided the stringed
instrument music for the affair, prepared and served the four course
meal, and had a wonderful time doing it all.
Collecting and delivering items from the Wish List is a great way
to support the Family House. Only new items will be accepted.
1.Paper Goods – toilet paper, tissues, paper towels,
napkins, etc.
The faculty advisor to the club, Arthur Thomas, is a heart recipient
who shared his story at a Lawrenceville School meeting three years
ago, and two students – Taylor Bloom and Mary Hopkins – now
in college, decided to form a club to raise awareness and funds for
organ donation. The first two years the club raised a total of $6,900,
which it donated to Family House. This year, under the direction of
senior co-presidents Jimi Lee and Nicole Banton, the club has raised
over $6,000 more, which will continue to support Gift of Life
Family House.
2.Laundry items – liquid laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets
3.Copy Paper – (8½” x 11” white only) and offices supplies including pens, pencils, paper clips, post-it notes, etc.
4. Light Bulbs – CFL/Compact Florescent Lightbulbs

Shotgun Start at 1PM – Scramble Format
Seven years ago, Dan Sinnott was diagnosed with a tumor
on his kidney. Yearning to play one last round of golf, he
called his friends and organized a golf outing on the day
before his surgery. A year later, those same friends decided
to make their golf outing an annual event. Five years ago, noticing the outing’s
rising popularity, Dan collaborated with long-time friend and President/CEO
of Gift of Life Donor Program Howard M. Nathan to use the event to raise funds
for Gift of Life Family House.“The purpose is to have fun, it’s not competitive.
We have good golfers; we have not so good golfers. We want to have fun, raise
money, and raise awareness.”
—Dan Sinnott
