VOLUME XLII
May 2015
I came across
this article from
Leadership by
Carey Nieuwhof
and thought you
might like to
read what the
“experts” are
saying about the church in the next few decades.
Here’s what I see as hallmarks of the churches that
will make an impact in the next decade:
NUMBER 11
won’t lead megachurches. When small churches stop
trying to be megachurches, good things can happen.
In fact, more and more larger churches will start
embracing smaller venues, locations and partnerships
to keep growing. A greater number of smaller venues
might be a hallmark of future churches making an
impact.
6. A quicker, lighter footprint. I learned this phrase
from my friend. Churches need a quicker, lighter
footprint to grow. If you’re waiting for millions to build
your building, you might wait forever. Get innovative
and start looking at portable and nontraditional ways of
growing your ministry. Quicker, lighter footprints will
be necessary.
1. The ability to say no. One of the reasons churches
don’t change is because leaders are unwilling to say
no to current members who prefer things the way they

online is … well … real. Sure, face to face is deeper,
but people will tell you things online they can’t muster
2. Outsider focus. Churches that become passionate

10. Prioritizing a for you not from you culture.
Andy Stanley often talks about what he wants for
people, not just what he wants from them. Churches
in decline often think in terms of what they can get
from people—money, time, growth etc. Churches
that will make an impact on the future will be
passionate about what they want for people—
financial balance, generosity, the joy of serving,
better families and, of course, Christ at the center of
everyone’s life.
Children’s Ministry
The time for our summer
camps and VBS is fast
approaching. Please
prayerfully consider
making a difference in a
child’s life this summer.
Come out and be a friend
who shares the love of
Christ with them! Call
473-2089 ext. 29 for more
information regarding
available volunteer staff
positions.
11. A tailored experience, not a tailored message.
You don’t have to tailor the message to unchurched
people, but churches that have an impact will tailor
the experience. There were presents under my tree
last Christmas. But I’m not a shopping mall fan.
Ninety percent of my gift buying happened online.
The content was the same—the experience changed.
Churches that decide they will hold the message
sacred but tailor the experience to an ever shifting
culture will be more effective.
Grace and Peace,
John Check

Music
Ministry
“Worshipping with our
hearts”
At times when
we worship or sing songs of praise to the Lord
our hearts and minds are focusing on other things.
Where are we going to get lunch, what chores do
we have to do today, did I remember to take the
clothes out of the washing machine, etc… We
think about what other people are thinking of us as
we lift our voices and worship or as we bow our
heads to pray when we eat out. Letting our minds
wander or focus on these worries of life during
times of worship misses the main point.
If you are in 6 –
12th grade and are
looking for a great
time to worship
with your peers then
join us on Sunday
evenings at 7:00
PM in the sanctuary. We would love to have you share
your talents with the Youth Praise team and the church.
Blessings,
Nathan Schierer
Worship
John 4:24 says: “God is spirit, and those who
worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
We should try to focus our worship from the heart
and let the worries of life pass away. I would
encourage you to focus on worshiping with all of
your heart and see how it changes your attitude
throughout the week. Take your attitude of
worship into all aspects of the week. Find time
to worship each day through praying, singing,
reading God’s word, or finding a personal way to
express worship with your full heart.
Altar Guild will be announced in Bulletin
If your children are interested in music we have
some exciting opportunities to worship. Join us on
Sundays at 4:30 PM through May 3 as we prepare
a song for Mother’s Day. Starting on Sunday, May

Missions Trip Announcement
I am excited to announce that the Cove will be
going on a missions trip this summer! This is
something that our students will be preparing for
over the next few months with fundraisers, Bible
studies, and much prayer. Please keep this trip in
your prayers as often as you think of the students
at our church! Here is the information for the trip.
Who: This trip is open to students who have
completed 6th-12th grade by the time of the trip.
What: This will be a missions trip, where our
primary focus will be serving other people. We
will have a lot of fun, and we will also work hard.
We will be serving through various projects such
as running a Vacation Bible School for children in
the area or serving food at a local soup kitchen.
On Saturday, May
16th, from 8:0010:00am, the Cove
will have a “Flapjack
Fundraiser” at the
Applebee’s restaurant
in Nags Head. Come
enjoy a delicious
breakfast of pancakes,
sausage, scrambled
eggs, and a beverage
(coffee, juice, soda, or tea) for $10. Tickets are on sale
now through the church office or through the students
who are going on the trip. Please consider buying a
ticket and supporting our students as they prepare for a
fantastic week of serving others this summer.
Schedule Changes in May
Instead of having youth group on Sunday, May 10th,
it is my hope that you will enjoy the time with your
families. We will continue with youth group at its
normal time the following week.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Drew Peyton
When: July 18th- 24th
Where: Huntington, West Virginia. We will be
staying on the campus of Marshall University, and
serving in the surrounding areas.
Why: (Our goals for this trip)
1. Our students will grow in their capacity to serve
others selflessly, following Jesus’ example.
2014 Spring Schedule
*All events are open for students in the 6th-12th
grade*
2. Our students will see a different culture than
they are used to in order to better understand the
universal need for Jesus.
All events meet at the Cove except youth
breakfast
3. Our students will grow in their relationship with
God and with the other students who attend the
trip.
Tuesday and Thursday- Cove Open Afterschool
3:00-5:00pm when school is in session. We will
enjoy snacks together from 3:30 -4:00 and spend
the rest of the time in fellowship.
How much does it cost: The trip will be (before
fund-raising) $400 per student. This cost will
cover transportation, meals other than travel days,
housing, our mission assignments, and a t-shirt. We
will be doing several fundraisers over the next few
months to help offset the cost for the students who
give their time at the fundraising events.
Miscellaneous Info:
1.The due date to sign up, along with a $100
deposit for each student, is May 9th. This is a firm
deadline that I will be unable to extend!
2. The sign-up sheet is available in the church
office
3. We will have several training/prayer meetings
for the students who are going on this trip.
Thursday morning youth breakfast, 7:00 -7:40

come out for a great hot breakfast and a guest
speaker each week. Transportation is provided
to middle and high school after breakfast. This
event meets in “Room A” inside the main church
building.

previously scheduled. (9:45-10:45)
