Mount Olivet United Methodist Church P. O. Box 787 300 Ananias Dare St. Manteo, N. C. 27954-0787 252.473.2089 Address Service Requested GOOD NEWS from MOUNT OLIVET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH John Check, Minister Cell: 252-474-8454; Home 252.473.2088 E-mail: [email protected] http://www.mountolivetumc.org Pastor’s email: [email protected] Newsletter Editor: [email protected] VOLUME XLII May 2015 I came across this article from Leadership by Carey Nieuwhof and thought you might like to read what the “experts” are saying about the church in the next few decades. Here’s what I see as hallmarks of the churches that will make an impact in the next decade: NUMBER 11 won’t lead megachurches. When small churches stop trying to be megachurches, good things can happen. In fact, more and more larger churches will start embracing smaller venues, locations and partnerships to keep growing. A greater number of smaller venues might be a hallmark of future churches making an impact. 6. A quicker, lighter footprint. I learned this phrase from my friend. Churches need a quicker, lighter footprint to grow. If you’re waiting for millions to build your building, you might wait forever. Get innovative and start looking at portable and nontraditional ways of growing your ministry. Quicker, lighter footprints will be necessary. 1. The ability to say no. One of the reasons churches don’t change is because leaders are unwilling to say no to current members who prefer things the way they 7. Valuing online relationships as real relationships. were. When you learn to say no to the preferences Churches that aren’t online beyond a website are going of some current members, you learn to say yes to a to miss the boat. Real interaction with real people community that is ready to be reached. online is … well … real. Sure, face to face is deeper, but people will tell you things online they can’t muster 2. Outsider focus. Churches that become passionate the courage to tell you face to face. Whether you get about people outside their walls will be far more them to a ‘real’ church is increasingly debatable. I effective than churches that are passionate about would love that. But we’ll have to see. As much as you keeping the few people they have inside their walls. might hate it, virtual relationships are becoming real Better still, you will have a healthier church. We call relationships. individuals who are fixated on their wants and needs selfish and immature. Selfless and mature churches 8. An openness to questions. Most unchurched people will have an impact because of their passion for today come in with questions that seem weird to people God cares about. those of us who spent a lifetime in church. Don’t try to answer them right away. Churches that understand 3. Quick decision making. If you have a decision that embracing questions is as important as providing making process that’s slow and complicated, you immediate answers will make an impact in the future. will not be able to keep up with the pace of change We’re discovering that if you embrace questions, the needed. Having multi-level approval processes and answers eventually find their way into people’s lives. having to get congregational approval on matters will block innovation. I agree with Jeff Brodie, if you The Holy Spirit actually does move in people’s lives. can’t make a decision within 24 hours, your process 9. A high value on experimentation. The more is too slow. traditional you are, the less you will value 4. Flexibility. You don’t need to change your mission experimentation. The more successful you are, the less you will value experimentation. If you start to raise the (for the most part), but you do need to change your value of experimentation, you will accelerate change methods. Flexible and adaptable churches that can innovate around strategy and different initiatives will and flexibility. The churches that connect with their community will be the churches willing enough to try a have the freedom to make the changes they need to variety of things, and who also have the courage to kill make an impact moving forward. them as soon as they stop producing results. 5. A willingness to embrace smaller to become bigger. continued on page 2 Megachurches will continue to grow, but most of us 1 10. Prioritizing a for you not from you culture. Andy Stanley often talks about what he wants for people, not just what he wants from them. Churches in decline often think in terms of what they can get from people—money, time, growth etc. Churches that will make an impact on the future will be passionate about what they want for people— financial balance, generosity, the joy of serving, better families and, of course, Christ at the center of everyone’s life. Children’s Ministry The time for our summer camps and VBS is fast approaching. Please prayerfully consider making a difference in a child’s life this summer. Come out and be a friend who shares the love of Christ with them! Call 473-2089 ext. 29 for more information regarding available volunteer staff positions. 11. A tailored experience, not a tailored message. You don’t have to tailor the message to unchurched people, but churches that have an impact will tailor the experience. There were presents under my tree last Christmas. But I’m not a shopping mall fan. Ninety percent of my gift buying happened online. The content was the same—the experience changed. Churches that decide they will hold the message sacred but tailor the experience to an ever shifting culture will be more effective. Where are we going to get lunch, what chores do we have to do today, did I remember to take the clothes out of the washing machine, etc… We think about what other people are thinking of us as we lift our voices and worship or as we bow our heads to pray when we eat out. Letting our minds wander or focus on these worries of life during times of worship misses the main point. If you are in 6 – 12th grade and are looking for a great time to worship with your peers then join us on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary. We would love to have you share your talents with the Youth Praise team and the church. Blessings, Nathan Schierer Worship John 4:24 says: “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” We should try to focus our worship from the heart and let the worries of life pass away. I would encourage you to focus on worshiping with all of your heart and see how it changes your attitude throughout the week. Take your attitude of worship into all aspects of the week. Find time to worship each day through praying, singing, reading God’s word, or finding a personal way to express worship with your full heart. Altar Guild will be announced in Bulletin If your children are interested in music we have some exciting opportunities to worship. Join us on Sundays at 4:30 PM through May 3 as we prepare a song for Mother’s Day.
