2 • Spring 2014 • HOPE IN ACTION
MIFA friends,
A few short months ago, we told you about changes we made to our Meals program in preparation for growth in
the future. I am very excited to tell you that some of that growth has already begun, through a partnership with
our neighbor, Mid-South Food Bank.
According to a recent study, many seniors in our community face food insecurity, which means they have limited
physical and economic access to sufficient safe, nutritious food to fulfill their dietary needs. More than one in 10
seniors in our area is food insecure.
In order to combat statistics like this one, we have just begun a pilot program with Mid-South Food Bank through
which we deliver boxes of shelf-stable food items every week to 25 clients in the 38109 ZIP code area who were
selected from the Aging Commission of the Mid-South’s waiting list for MIFA Meals on Wheels. Each box
contains enough breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to last seven days. Using our expertise and resources in meal
delivery and the Food Bank’s volunteers and access to wholesale food vendors, we believe this program could
allow us to serve many more Shelby County seniors.
In 1976, when our community needed an answer to the growing issue of senior hunger, we created our
home-delivered meals program. When a new provider was needed for congregate meals, we took that task
on as well. As both demand and technology advanced, we worked to innovate. And we continue looking for
better ways to serve our community—through new ideas, best practices, and smart partnerships—and to support
the independence of our senior neighbors.
Sincerely,
Sally Jones Heinz
Executive Director

MIFA welcomes
Cecelia Johnson-Powell
and Zev Samuels
Cecelia Johnson-Powell
Zev Samuels
Director of Program Performance
Director of Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program
Cecelia brings 18 years of program development, performance analysis
and reporting, and quality improvement experience to the team, having
worked with such respected agencies as the United Way of Central
Indiana, the Indiana Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives,
and the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority.
Zev has spent more than 20 years—most of them in the Mid-South—
working with vulnerable senior populations. A licensed master social
worker, Zev has worked in both nonprofit and corporate environments
and brings a new perspective to our team. He also brings a great deal
of experience and compassion to the Long-Term Care Ombudsman
program, where his level of care and concern for the clients is readily
apparent.
“I am so excited about this opportunity to contribute to the MIFA
mission and vision. For me, working at MIFA, really, is a call to ‘serve
individuals and the community as an act of faith.’ It’s clear to me that
MIFA is proof of what we can accomplish as a community when we
work together. I want to be part of that experience.”
Cecelia holds a BS in Public Affairs from Indiana University School
of Public and Environmental Affairs. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana,
Cecelia “retired” to the Mid-South in 2011 with her husband Richard
Powell. Together they have four adult children: Jared Johnson, Dr. Carmin
Powell, Adrienne Johnson, and Camira Powell. Cecelia is a member of First
Congregational Church and serves as the congregation’s co-moderator.

“MIFA has always meant two things to me: Memphis and family,”
Zev says. “I remember delivering MIFA Meals on Wheels as a child,
holding the map and reading out the directions. And MIFA was my first
introduction to the concept of ‘inter-faith.’”
Zev joined the MIFA team in December. Now he says, “MIFA gives me
a reason to look forward to Mondays!”

MIFA HONORS
DR. KING’S LEGACY
On January 20, MIFA held its annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr.’s birthday. Bruce Efird, president and CEO of Fred’s Inc., delivered
a lively and inspiring keynote address about Dr. King’s legacy, MIFA’s
value in the community, and the talent and potential of our teen oratorical
contestants.
The program also featured musical contributions from several talented
Cordova High School musicians and COOL participant Kayla Little.
During the celebration, the 11 finalists in MIFA’s Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr. Teen Oratorical Contest were announced. This annual competition,
sponsored by Nina and Matthew Thornton, engages COOL students in
friendly competition and offers them an opportunity to work with mentors as
they revise their submissions. The first-place winner will deliver the keynote
address at MIFA’s Day of Reflection and Service on Saturday, April 5.

Raiford Shoe Fund celebrates
20 years of giving to MIFA
By Dorothy Lane McClure
MIFA Emergency Services provides families in crisis with basic necessities,
including food, shelter, and clothing. For two decades, the Raiford Memorial
Shoe Fund has provided qualified clients with well-fitting, new footwear to
literally help them stay on their feet.
During his lifetime, Phillip Raiford and Raiford’s Shoes, Inc. provided
thousands of pairs of shoes to children in need. That legacy of caring continues
today through MIFA and his family’s generous support. In reflecting back on
their 20-year partnership with MIFA, Raiford’s daughter Phyllis Scruggs says,
JOIN US ON SATURDAY,
“MIFA provides our community with an inter-faith organization that cuts

anyone in need who comes to you for help. We feel privileged to be able to
AND SERVICE, PRESENTED BY help you in that mission.”

In 1994, Caprice Snyder (right), MIFA VP of Family Programs,
received a start-up contribution for the Phillip & Geneva Raiford
Shoe Fund from Phyllis Scruggs (left), the Raifords’ daughter.

Since its creation, over 8,000 lives have been touched by the Raiford Shoe
Fund. We are grateful to the Raiford and Scruggs families for their extraordinary
generosity and the lasting impact of their gifts. Happy 20th anniversary!
You can support Emergency Services too. Make a contribution

The Memphis Grizzlies’ Zach Randolph renewed his support for MIFA’s Emergency Services
program through the creation of the Zach Randolph Community Assistance Fund. Z-Bo’s
$20,000 contribution will allow us to provide utility assistance to 100 families in need. He is
pictured here with MLGW President & CEO Jerry Collins, MIFA Executive Director Sally
Heinz, and MLGW Director of Corporate Communications Gale Jones Carson.
You can support Plus-1 just like Z-Bo!
Use the enclosed Plus-1 donation envelope to make a contribution today.
