Sri Lanka Police reject
US charges of torture
and abuse in detention
(ft.lk) The Sri Lanka Police has rejected the
charges of torture and abuse of country’s citizens,
during police custody, raised by the United States
in the 2012 Human Rights report released by the
Department of State recently. The US country
report on Human Rights practices for 2012 for Sri
Lanka, said although the law makes torture a
punishable offence and mandates a sentence
there were credible reports that police and
security forces tortured and abused citizens.
Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said the
police officials of every rank undergo training to
maintain human rights, when carrying out their
duties and the allegations of torture and abuse

raised by the US report were ‘baseless’.
He said incidents where Police officers were
accused of torturing the arrested people have not
been recorded in the past year and the reference
made in the report to an incident involving a
former Police Officer in Charge (OIC) happened
seven years ago.
“There have not been such reports in recent
times,” the spokesman said. The US report cited
the case of former Polpithigama Police Officer in
Charge W.E. Wijeratne, who was convicted by the
Kurunegala High Court under the Torture Act and
sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment in
January this year.
The Police spokesman said although the
sentence was given this year, the incident took
place in 2003. He said the people can report such
allegations to the Human Rights Commission in
Sri Lanka or raise them in the court.

Killer roads claim 498 lives
(dailymirror.lk) At least five people died daily in the
first three months of this year
Nearly 498 people were killed in 470 fatal road
tragedies reported in the first three months of this
year while the total number of accidents reported
up to March is 2,218, police headquarters said.
Most of the deaths were reported from motorbike
and trishaw accidents. A large number of
pedestrians had also been killed.
Police said a large number of accidents were
reported in April particularly during the National
New Year festival period.
Recklessness, exhaustion, drunk driving,
disobeying road rules and traffic signals are some
of the reasons for such needless accidents.
Pedestrians who fail to use zebra crossings fall
easy prey to speeding vehicles.
Last year more than 1,500 people were killed in
road accidents.
Police said even though several awareness
programmes were conducted, there was a
significant increase in the number of road
accidents every year. (SD)

‘No Fire Zone’ to be screened in London
on eve of Action Group meeting
In another anti-Sri Lanka move
By Sujeeva Nivunhella in London
(island.lk) The Front Line Club in London is
planning to agitate against the Sri Lankan
government again by screening Callum Macrae’s
latest documentary film ‘No Fire Zone’ based
purportedly on the final 138 days of the battle
against the LTTE.
A sneak preview screening of this 90-minute film
will be held on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 pm. After the
show, there will be a questions and answer
session.
Political observers believe the screening of this
film has been timed on the eve of the crucial
Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG)
meeting scheduled to be held in London on April
26 to generate maximum anti-Sri Lanka impact.

Banned chemicals still in the market
Companies misinterpret blanket ban as
‘temporary measure’
(nation.lk) Four agro-chemicals banned by the
government for being a primary cause of the
Chronic Kidney Disease in North Central
Province, have already penetrated into the
meals of vast majority of Sri Lankans, Dr.
Channa Jayasunama, Lecturer at the
Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of
Medicine of Rajarata University told The Nation.
“These pesticides pollute the groundwater in the
area. This pollutes valuable water resources.
They’re also in turn absorbed into the
agricultural produce that is grown. These are
then transported throughout the country and into
our dining tables. Therefore, the banned
chemicals are now in what we eat and drink,
regardless of the area we live in”, he said
pointing out the inescapable ill-effects of
pesticides.
The four banned chemicals are Carbofuran,
Chlorpyrifos, Propanil and Carbaryl.
However, in an interesting turn of events, The
Nation reliably learns that banned chemicals
have still not been removed from the market and
are continuously being sold to farmers. This is
encouraged by pesticides companies who term
the ban as “only a temporary measure.” On the
contrary, government authorities insist that the
ban is a blanket one on importation and usage.
“Even if an outright ban on these pesticides
were brought in tomorrow, the effects from their
use thus far would last another ‘six to seven
years’, Dr. Jayasumana added.
Sitting on a lonely shore, a woman fights
to keep her family from starvation
(sundaytimes.lk) It takes courage for 52-year-old
Sumana Dissanayake to face a single day –
sometimes just a couple of tiny lake fish caught
from the Parakrama Samudra are all that keep her
family from destitution. Mrs Dissanayaka’s first
husband died of snake-bite 20 years ago, and her
second husband left the family.
Her eldest daughter’s husband died in a road
accident. Since then, both older women live a
hand-to-mouth existence in the small village of
Pattini Pedesa near Polonnaruwa, feeding a
combined family of five with whatever work they
can scrape up. Mrs Dissanayake has a second
daughter of 12 years
and her other
daughter, Mangalika,
has two children
aged nine and five.
Both women try to
find labouring work on building sites and roads,
arduous work that bring in about Rs.300-400 a day
– but even that is seldom available.
The wide waters of the centuries-old Parakrama
Samudra provide the family with much of its daily
food, with a few extra little fish to sell sometimes,
bringing in about Rs.50 if they are lucky.
The family lives in an unfinished little house with
no doors, windows or kitchen. The children walk
3km to the nearest school and do their homework
on mats spread outside their little home, using the
daylight until the sun sets.

Sri Lanka calls for a balanced approach in addressing NPT goals
(Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka's has called for "a
balanced approach" in addressing the objectives of
the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear
Weapons (NPT).
Noting that "Sri Lanka remains fully committed to
the nuclear non-proliferation commitments of the
NPT and have steadfastly and consistently
supported the global initiatives on nonproliferation", said Ambassador Aryasinha, who is
Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the UN in
Geneva.
Ambassador Aryasinha noted that "nuclear nonproliferation however remains one of three pillars
of the NPT, which requires equal attention along
with the other two - promotion of safe and secure
use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and
nuclear disarmament".
He said "such an approach which includes the
implementation of the 13 practical steps agreed on
to meet the disarmament commitments during the
2000 Review Conference to advance progressively
towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, is
a necessary step on the road map to achieving the
ultimate goal of a world free of nuclear weapons."
Ambassador Aryasinha made these observations
when he addressed the Second Session of the
Preparatory Committee for the 2015 Review
Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the
Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) on its
opening day. T

Referring to the safeguards system established by

Ambassador Aryasinha said "Sri Lanka believes it
is the responsibility of States to cooperate with the
IAEA by complying with its objectives. We strongly
support nuclear capability verification under the

Addressing a media briefing at NFF headquarters

the Northern PC election was held under the 13th

the racist Eelam struggle.
He warned that the Tamil National Alliance, after
winning the election, would work to harm the
sovereignty of the country by obtaining all the
anti-national powers in the 13th Amendment with
the help of the Western countries and those
Western countries would support separate rule in
those regions.
Knowing the final outcome, his party was against
the holding of the poll under the current
circumstances and it wanted the total repeal of the
13th Amendment, which was forced down on Sri

country’s sovereignty amended, before holding the

Sajith blasts ‘Deyata Kirula’
By Harischandra Gunaratna
(island.lk) UNP parliamentarian Sajith Premadasa
yesterday lashed out at the government over its
‘Deyata Kirula’ exhibition. He said it was a disaster
and like bolt from the blue on the already suffering
masses. "The Government would have done
better if it spent the colossal amount of money
wasted on the’Deyata Kirula’ to provide an
electricity subsidy to the masses who are
burdened with all kinds of price hikes," he said.
Though the civil strife in the country came to an
end on May 19, 2009, people in Sri Lanka were
yet to enjoy the peace dividend and the only thing
that the government had given them was the axing
of the subsidies and welfare measures hitherto
enjoyed by the masses, Premadasa said.
Addressing a news conference, at the Bodhi
Ranasinghe Foundation in Polhengoda, he said
that though the government was paying lip service
to providing welfare measures to the common
masses, it kept on adding taxes instead of
providing any relief.
"When President Ranasinghe Premadasa was in
power, a plethora of investors were fighting to
open factories here and when they were opened,
a large number of youth were provided
employment and there were so many other
benefits to the people. But today it has become an
era where the investors are folding up their
factories and moving to other countries," the
parliamentarian said.
He said the investors who were very enthusiastic
about opening factories have now turned their
backs on the country and have moved to other
countries such as India, Laos, Vietnam,
Bangladesh etc.
His late father Premadasa, he said, fought for the
rights of the common masses and saw that they
were restored, but today they were pushed from
the frying pan to the fire.
"Today schools are being closed down in rapid
succession and we need to change this trend and
see that an era where more schools will be
opened will dawn," Premadasa said.
There were 3.9 million schoolchildren in the
country and 73 per cent of them were not provided
with their midday meal, he said.
Premadasa announced that the 20th death
anniversary of President Ranasinghe Premadasa
would be commemorated on May 1 in 20 districts,
including Colombo and 20 development projects
would be launched. He added that they would not
be mere commemoration ceremonies but result
oriented projects in line with the Premadasa
vision.
Sajith Premadasa emphasised the need to
mobilise the masses and hold a mass protest rally
against the arbitrary action of the government and
its failure to redress the masses on the issues
faced by them.

Why is Minister Pavithra hiding? asks UNP
By Norman Palihawadane
(island.lk) Chief Opposition Whip and Gampaha
District UNP Parliamentarian John Amaratunga
demanded to know why Power and Energy
Minister Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi continues to
keep silent on the electricity price hike, which had
hit all consumers below the belt.
"She, as the subject minister, must tell the nation
why such a price hike – which is of unprecedented
proportions - had been effected. It funny that
Media and Information Minister Keheliya
Rambukwella is trying to give answers in a bid to
mitigate the sufferings," the Chief Opposition Whip

because she knows

Suspend Lanka from Commonwealth - CJs
Whether or not Sri Lanka will play host to the
Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting
(CHOGM) in November this year will be known
after the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group
(CMAG) meets in London on Friday.
Although the question of the venue is not on the
formal agenda of the CMAG, it could be raised
under the provision for "any other business." The
most recent plea against holding the summit in
Lanka came from the Commonwealth Law
Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa,
between April 14-18. The meeting, attended by 27
Chief Justices, unanimously passed a resolution
asking CMAG "to place Sri Lanka on the agenda
of the next meeting on April 26, and suspend it
from the Councils of the Commonwealth for
serious and persistent violations of the
Commonwealth’s fundamental values." The
resolution also called upon Commonwealth
countries to "reconsider" holding CHOGM in
Lanka, and blamed the SL government for its role
in impeaching Chief Justice Shirani
Bandaranayake "in defiance of the judgments of
the highest courts in Sri Lanka."
Meanwhile, Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa
reiterated his promise to hold elections to the
Northern Provincial Council (NPC) in September
this year, but said that the date would be fixed
after consulting his astrologer.
The Election Commissioner has told the media
that elections to the NPC cannot be held without
the government establishing the Council by a
gazette notification. If the elections are to be held
in September, the gazette notification should come
by April end.

JVP to include relative of missing

Matale mass grave case
BY DASUN EDIRISINGHE
(island.l) The JVP said that its lawyers would
include the relatives of those who disappeared,
during the 1987 – 89 period in the Matale
District, as witnesses in the mass grave case,
which is being heard at the Matale Magistrate’s
Court.
Party propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath told
The Island that since forensic and archeological
experts had confirmed the skulls and skeletal
remains, unearthed from the mass grave on the
Matale hospital grounds, belonged to the ‘87 –
‘90 period, the JVP started collecting details of
disappeared youth in the district during their
second uprising.
"We want to include relations of the youth
disappeared during that period to help the Court
proceedings," he said adding that their lawyers
would make a request to the Court in this regard
at the next hearing.
The Gampaha District MP said that the
government tried to hush up the issue by not
taking any action to expedite the investigations
into the finds.
Herath said that they complained to the IGP over
the Army’s presence at night around the grave
last week, but police did not taken any action.
However, the JVP would be on the alert to avoid
any tampering of the site to mislead the ongoing
investigations and the time period, Herath said.
Around 154 skeletons were unearthed from the
mass grave and President Mahinda Rajapaksa
also promisedm two weeks ago, to appoint a
special presidential commission to investigate it.

Simmering discontent within Tamil National
Alliance threatening to explode
No politics in garbage issue - FSP
By Sandun Jayawardana and Crystal
Koelmeyer
(nation.lk) Frontline Socialist Party (FSP)
member Udul Premaratne, who was at the
forefront of the protest against the
Meethotamulla garbage dump, strongly
refuted allegations made by Colombo Mayor
A.J.M. Muzammil that they were taking up the
issue for ‘political gain’.
Speaking at a hastily arranged media briefing
on Wednesday (10), Muzammil accused
‘outside forces’ of organizing protests in the
area for political gain, and claimed many of
those who led the protest at the garbage
dump site last week weren’t area residents.
However, Premaratne said the issue had
nothing to do with politics. “This is an issue
that should be viewed in a broader
perspective. We are not here for political benefits,”
he claimed.
Authoritative persons including the Chairman of
the Kolonnawa Urban Council are not bothered
about the Meethotamulla garbage dump, as they
have effectively transmuted the very nuisance to a
source of income, he charged. Furthermore,
Premaratne also stressed that if the matter was
not addressed in time, the Young Lawyers
Association in Sri Lanka (YLA) is looking at filing a
court case against the State for neglecting the
‘Right To Life’ of citizens.
“What the ‘People’s Movement against the

June 1, residents in Colombo would have to
separate their garbage into ‘recyclable’ and ‘nonrecyclable’ waste if they want their garbage to be
collected by the Colombo Municipal Council
(CMC). At the media briefing held last week, the
mayor revealed a staggering 750 tons of garbage
is collected by the CMC each day. According to
him, around 25% of this garbage was recyclable
and as such, if households separated them, it
would go at least some way towards reducing the
amount of garbage being dumped at the site.

TNA in a twist makes wrong call

(nation.lk) The government last week
condemned the moves of the Tamil
National Alliance (TNA) calling on
India to press Sri Lanka for an
interim administration in a merged
North and Eastern provinces. And,
reiterated that such mechanisms
should be discussed with the regime

The TNA recently urged India to

Zahira students visit India
BOC number one bank for 5th consecutive year
The Bank of Ceylon (BOC) setting a record,
became the number one bank for the fifth
consecutive year.
Brand Finance Lanka, a part of the
Brand Finance network, which is a
brand valuation and strategy company
headquartered in the UK, has
published its Brand's annual
publication recently.
BOC General Manager, D. M.
Gunesekera said the brand promised to serve the
people of Sri Lanka. The Bank of Ceylon received
global recognition last year as one of the top 1,000
banks in the world from the world's premier
banking and finance magazine, "The Banker."
According to Brand's Annual edition 2013, Brand
value of the Bank of Ceylon had increased from
Rs.15.19 billion to Rs.24.15 billion in the year
2013, a significant growth of 62 percent
compared to the previous year.
The bank has reached an exceptional
milestone in 2012 by achieving the
highest profits among all organisations in
Sri Lanka. The BOC also became the first
bank in Sri Lanka to reach a remarkable
milestone by achieving Rs. 1.0 trillion in assets in
the year 2012. The bank passed yet another
milestone by successfully completing a USD $500
million bond issue for the second time in April
2013 and it was oversubscribed six times.
Central Bank makes record Rs. 66bn in profits
(island.lk) The central bank made 66 billion
rupees in profits in 2012, up 41 percent from a
year earlier, helped by gold trading and inflation,
official data showed.
The central bank earned 11.5 billion rupees as
interest on foreign reserves and another 16.7
billion as capital gains including in gold.
"The Bank’s overall reserve management
operations generated a foreign income of US
dollars 221 million (approximately Rs. 28 billion)
during the year 2012,which is over 4 per cent
returns on average reserves," the Central Bank
said.
"In the midst of the comparatively low interest
market environment, progress was made under
challenging circumstances in generating a
significant income through foreign currency and
gold trading by maximizing the opportunities
arising from market fluctuations and capital gains
derived on fixed income securities."
Though a central bank makes 'profits' mostly
from inflation (profits from gold come from
inflation generated by reserve currency central
banks) the income from forex reserve do not
cause any harm domestically.
There was also a record 25 billion rupees profit
from currency depreciation up from 4.7 billion
rupees a year earlier and 25.9 billion rupees in
interest from Treasury bills bought with printed
money which caused the rupee to depreciate.
When a central bank triggers a balance of
payments crisis it is also able to make profits
from the high yielding domestic Treasuries it
buys and the rupees created by their purchase
leads to losses in low yielding foreign reserves.
In 2010 when the Central Bank made only 11
billion rupees in profits, Sri Lanka had a stable
economy and low inflation.
The cost of sterilizing inflows, which help keep
inflation down in stable times, could cause losses
from a monetary authority's domestic operations.
By end 2012 the Central Bank had gold reserves
of 85 billion rupees. In the past few weeks there
had been steep falls in the gold price.
Salaries and wages went up 26 percent from a
year earlier to 2.8 billion rupees. There was a
344 million reversal in pension contributions.
In 2012 the Central Bank had paid 27 million
rupees as legal fees to lawyers who appeared
against a case by Deutsche Bank against Sri
Lanka down from 324.37 million rupees a year
earlier.
The Central Bank does not have to pay income
tax and has been freed from an economic
service charge from 2012.
SEA FREIGHT (Sri Lanka)
The Central Bank had transferred 33 billion
AIR FREIGHT (World wide) rupees from this year's profits to the Treasury
and 10 billion rupees from last year. Gains

from rupee currency depreciation is not

But truth remains that the 5-party TNA has so
far not discussed anything about the
Provincial Council election to date, Mr. Suresh
Premachandran said. He went on to say that
“in the last Eastern Provincial Council election
we - all the other 4 parties in the TNA were
given 5 seats to contest in the district of
Batticalao and we won 4 seats, whereas
Ilankai Tamil Arasu kandchchi fielded 9
candidates and they managed to win only two
seats. “Even in the last Parliamentary General
elections, in the Vanni electoral district they
nominated Mr. Soosaithasan, a former MP for
Mannar and many others, unfortunately all
their candidates failed to win a seat, he said.
Even when you analyzed the parliamentary
election results of the Jaffna electoral district,
except for Mavai S. Senathirajah no one else
who contested as Ilankai Tamil Arasu
Kadchchi candidate won a seat, Mr. Suresh
Premachandran said.
“ In the case of Mr. E. Saravanapavan, Mr. S.

This is the ground
reality regarding

Alliance
from P12
He alleged that though 60 companies had
registered with the authority to undertake road
development projects, all contracts had been
awarded to only seven contractors who were either
close associates of the former Chief Minister or his
political henchmen.
The quality and standards of the roads completed
had not been subjected to tests prior to making
payments to the contractors, though it is required
that at least 200 laboratory tests be conducted
before the roads are approved for use, the Alliance
member alleged.
The present Chief Minister S. M. Ranjith himself
raised the issue sometime ago and revealed about
gross misappropriation of funds. but up to date he
had failed to call for an investigation, he charged.
He urged Chief Minister Ranjith and the General
Manager of Road Development Authority, of the
North Central Province to divulge to the public those
corrupt deals.
Karunamuni said there were wheels within wheels
and the blame should be placed on the Central
Government also for turning a blind eye to high
level corruption taking place in the North Central
Provincial Council over the years.
Joesph Stalin, a member of the alliance said that
according to audit reports, Rs 3,000 million was a
part of Rs 7,500 million granted as loans by various
institutions such as JAICA and ADB between 2008
and 2012 period. He added that the loans would
have to be repaid.
The number of kilometres to be developed was 410
and the number of roads were 30.
Responding to a query on whether the Alliance
against Corruption had informed JAICA and ADB
about the alleged corruption, misappropriation and
irregularities in disbursement of funds in the road
development of projects for which those institutions
had granted loans, Stalin and another member of
the alliance said that JAICA would be informed and
a report would be tabled at the forthcoming ADB
conference in India about the said corruption.
Priyantha Fernando, another member of the
Alliance and a member of the Citizen Committee of
Anuradhapura said that the residents of the North
Central Province were grappling with a life and
death situation and at least 20,000 people were
reported to be suffering from kidney decease, but
most of the clinics and hospitals in the province did
not have equipment and the required drugs to treat
the kidney patients.
He said at least Rs 50,000 would be required to
conduct a clinic for kidney patients and the
Provincial Council had claimed that it did not have
the funds for such urgencies. At least the PC should
be able to provide good drinking water to the people
to nip the problem in the bud.
In 48 percent of the schools in the province there
are no toilets and it was mentioned in a report
submitted by a PHI in 2011 and the answer of the
Provincial Councilors was for the students to use
the jungle patches adjoining the schools, he said.
During the last 10 years, 70 schools had been
closed in the province and only Rs 150 million had
been allocated for education by the Provincial
Council, he added.

President at presentation of Sri Lanka Artillery President’s and Regimental Colours:
TERRORISM IS TERRORISM, UNDERSTAND ITS TRUE NATURE
* World should understand this reality
* Some countries still groping in the dark
Rasika Somarathna in Panagoda
(dailynews.lk) The only way to eliminate the
scourge of terrorism from the world is to
understand its true nature and fight it for what it
is, instead of giving terrorism various definitions
and tags, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated
yesterday.
The President said, as a leader of a country
which had defeated terrorism, he hoped that the
world would understand this reality.
“Does not matter where it happens, be it in Asia,
Arabic countries or anywhere in the world,
terrorism is terrorism,” the President stressed.
President Rajapaksa made these comments in
his speech as the Chief Guest at the presentation
of the President’s and Regimental Colours to the
Sri Lanka Artillery.
The event was held at Artillery Regiment’s base
in Panagoda. Addressing the soldiers, the
President said although Sri Lanka had
successfully defeated terrorism, some countries
were yet groping in the dark in their quest to
defeat the scourge. He said that even today
bombs were going off in cities of some powerful
nations.
The President pointed out that Sri Lanka had
silenced the guns of terrorists in 2009 and since
then Eelamist’s have realized that they cannot
divide the country by the force of weapons.
“However, terrorist remnants now residing in
other countries were resorting to new tactics to
divide the country,” he noted.
The President said his government will never
allow anyone to take up weapons against the
country and shall not leave room for anyone to
divide the motherland.
“The people should have complete faith and
confidence that the land that was liberated from
terrorism through great sacrifice of life will not be
handed over to the forces of separatism again,”
he declared.
Addressing the Gunners of the Regiment, the
President said, although Sri Lankans’ first saw
Artillery guns in 1505 when the Portuguese
invaded the island, they were not not taken
aback. Instead in a few years the Lankans had
designed their own artillery guns and had used
them successfully against the enemy, he
described.
However, he lamented that when fighting against
the LTTE, Sri Lanka had to seek foreign help
largely to get weapons. “We need to do research
and as Sri Lankans’ we should produce what we
need in our own soil. This is how we can add
value to our hard won peace,” he added.
About the Artillery Gunners, the President said
that they had played a major role and had

Ananda College OBA UK celebrate Sinhala New Year with a combination of tradition and parody
By Pandula Ranatunga
It was another successful Sinhala New Year
celebration organised by the Old Boys Association
of Ananda College in the UK, adding to its already
existing list of events that had been held
consecutively in the month of April for the last
17years. The OBA which celebrated its 30 years
existence in the UK just last year is renowned for
being the only Past Pupil Association to hold a
Sinhala New Year Event in the UK. The OBA has a
quite a long line of membership ranging from
young and old whilst retaining all the trappings of a
fully-fledged traditional Association. And as usual
this year, the event took place at its customary
location at Feltham Assembley Hall with the help
and participation of its members and their friends
and family. The event which was compered by
Dakshina Bodhinayake and Lahiru Kokuhennadige
began with the religious moment that has always
been a mandatory part of the Ananda New Year
Celebrations; observing of five precepts and the
chanting of Pirith by the Head Monk of London
Buddhist Vihara and the Chief Sanga Nayaka of
Great Britain, Most Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala who
was joined by resident monk Ven. Konwewa
Ariyarathna. In addition to the President's speech
by Mr. Jay Edirappuli, the Sri Lankan High
Commissioner to the UK His Excellency
Dr.Christopher Nonis also addressed the crowd
reflecting not just only as Anandians but as proud
Sri Lankan's positively helping to change the
reputation of the country and its future and the
impact of Sri Lankan contribution towards the
global market.
The event comprised an exhibition of talents not
only limited to the Ananda College Old Boys but
also to their friends and their children, making a
quite a panoply of entertainment for those who
eagerly attended the function. After the lighting of
the ceremonial lamp by the current and the past
Presidents of the OBA, the event began to unfold
with an exciting line up of items drawing huge
applauses from the audience. It might not have
had the actual cukoobird's singing and the
fragrance of newly ripe fruits filling the air but it
certainly had the sound of Raban, the children's
laughter and the singing and dancing which
illustrated traditional games and practice of old
Sinhalese customs in their most elaborate and
colourful ways. And in addition to that oil cakes and
milk rice with other traditional sweets laid on tables
and everyone attired in their freshly colourful
clothes portrayed on the day to tell the traditional
signs of a dawn of Sinhala New Year which surely
left a hint of nostalgia among all those who
attended the event.
A considerable crowd had gathered for the event
predominantly attended by friends and families of
Anandians with tickets having been sold through
personal contacts and internal networking. The
colourful dances and songs conducted by many
old Anandians' children provided a traditional
family-friendly atmosphere that not only
encouraged harmony amongst children and adults
but also added to the spectacle of the children's
games and fancy dress parade. The ever popular
comedy sketch “Pubilic Day” written and acted by
old Anandians and their friends which was based
on the satirical version of modern-day Sri Lankan
politics, was the highlight of the occasion, bringing
the audience to hysterical laughter. Subsequent to
Avurudu Kumari and Kumaraya competition, the
usual American auction of an Avurudu hamper and
a Raffle Draw were done. The event drew to a
close after one of the Past President s of the OBA
Harshaka Kannangara gave the vote of thanks
which was followed by the rousing renditions of the
school song and the Sri Lankan national anthem. It
was certainly a day of fun and laughter for old
Anandians and their friends and families too, all
coming together and promoting harmony and unity
amongst each other and celebrating one of Sri
Lanka's most celebrated cultural events.

Land taken over in Jaffna for public
needs - says statement
(newsfirst.lk/) The official in charge of land
takeovers in the Jaffna district has issued a
statement dated April 27, 2013 stating that an area
of 6381 acres and 38.97 perches has been taken
over in the Walikamam area in Jaffna for public
needs.
The officer noted that the identified lands were
located in the Walikamam North and Walikamam
East divisional secretariat areas.
The release issued by the official in charge of land
takeovers noted that the land acquired in this
manner will be used for the headquarters of the
Jaffna Military Command and for the creation of
high security zones in the Palaly and
Kankasanthurai areas.
The announcement further notes that the lands
are to be taken over as per the instructions of the
Ministry of Land and Land Development under
section 2 of Act number 28 of 1964, pertaining to
the takeover of lands for public needs.
It notes that the owners of these lands have not
been identified as yet.
The Media Secretary of the Ministry of Land and
Land Reclamations noted that if individuals are
capable of confirming their ownership of these
lands, the Ministry is prepared to provide
compensation for them.
He added that as per the recommendations of the
LLRC report lands which are absolutely necessary
have only been taken over in this manner.
With limited tools Veluwana crafts winning
football culture
(sundaytimes.lk) Never would anyone have
thought that a school which produced one of Sri
Lanka’s top cricket coaches located in the
surroundings of the famous P. Sara Oval cricket
ground, would be a haven for young footballers.
Veluwana College, situated in Dematagoda,
Colombo may have their reasons to be proud
about Chandika Hathurusinghe, the former Sri
Lanka opener who transformed
himself into a coach who is good
enough to head the New South
Wales team in Australia.
But according to school officials,
football runs deep in the veins of the
youngsters of Veluwana, who enjoy
the luxury of stardom within the
walls of the school. But in reality,
these football-mad youngsters could
be considered less privileged for
many reasons, despite their school
being quite well known in Colombo.
Veluwana’s footballers as a matter
of fact have nothing at all in their
possession when it comes to
facilities. There are times when
these youngsters borrow boots, leg
guards and other equipment from rival teams and
on some occasions from their own opposition.
These players, who form the Under-19, 17, 15
and 13 age group football teams for Veluwana,
consider themselves juvenile units of ‘Real
Madrid’ and ‘Barcelona’ in the neighbourhood of
Dematagoda and Wanathamulla. This undying
passion towards the game has made this bunch
of youngsters the most loved ones in the
neighbourhood and this they consider a blessing
in disguise.
“We are blessed with the overwhelming support
given to our boys by the veteran footballers from
the nearby ‘Mohamed ground’, where we conduct
practice sessions. We have the zealous backing
of veteran players like Mr. Gamini and Mr. Nihal
Chandrasiri. They have contributed so much to
uplift our football, which stands out from other
sports at Veluvana,” W. Karunathilake, the
school’s
principal, revealed.
Unlike in other schools, cricket is
not the central sport at Veluwana.
Although it enjoys reasonable
popularity, the school’s football
players have managed to
overthrow every other sport,
making their chosen game not just
the most followed sport at school
but also in the entire vicinity.
The success of the Veluwana
footballers at different age
categories in the recent past has
added much-needed flavour to the
sport despite its ever growing
demand for basic needs. Their
Under-13, 15 and 17 teams have
gone on to win the Colombo District
championship in 2009 and 2010. This year they
kicked off their campaign by winning the Zonal
Championship in all age categories.
“Last year our cricket teams became the Under17 Division III champions and Under-19 Division II
runners-up. Despite those feats, football has
proved to be the flagship sport and it still keeps
growing. As of today, Veluwana has attracted over
200 students and the number keeps swelling.
Most of these players come from low-income
families and these parents are not in a position
to afford the (sport’s)
expenses. In that case the
roles of our masters-incharge, Gathika Gunaratne
and Nandana Sugath, are
commendable. There are
times when they pocket out
their own money for these
youngsters,” Karunathilake
added.
Scholarship In Memory of Dr. Daya Silva
A large gathering attended the three
month memorial Dana ceremony at
London Buddhist Vihara to honour
and remember Dr. Daya Silva who
passed away in January 2013. He
was a long standing supporter of the
London Buddhist Vihara. Sarath
Randeniya traced Daya's many acts
of generosity. In an emotional
speech Randenniya, a founder
member of the Sri Lankan Golfing
Society, spoke of his immense
support for worthy causes. Apart
from healing the sick, he was also a
great supporter and a benefactor of
the Sri Lanka Golfing Society(UK)of
which he was a past captain.
The membership of the SLGS
organised a fund to commemorate
in memory of Dr Daya Silva. This
money was presented to Ven.
Bandula, who was the secretary of
the RAHULA TRUST to educate a
deserving a child in Sri Lanka.

The photograph shows Sarath Randeniya handing the cheque to Ven.
Bandula. Also in the photograph are Daya's son, Jeevaka, son-in-law,
Megha Wijayatileke and young Mevan Wijayatileke, grandson of Daya,
who is a life member of the SLGS.
Dubai based airline launches Death of former Bens soccer
flights to Mattala from May 2
captain Aloy Peiris
Shirajiv Sirimane
(dailynews.lk) Dubai based airline, flydubai, will
launch flights to the Mattala Rajapaksa
International Airport (MRIA) from May 2. The
airline would be the second international carrier
after Air Arabia to have flights from MRIA. It would
operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and on
a daily basis from June.
Since the airline carries several passengers from
the CIS countries, Southern and Eastern tourism
will receive a major boost with the arrival of the
flydubai flights. This service is in addition to their
current daily flights to Colombo. More than 30
percent of flydubai's total passenger traffic to Sri
Lanka in 2012 were connecting traffic from Central
and Eastern European (CEE) countries and the
Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This
growth is a result of the carrier's improved
connection times in Dubai.
(dailynews.lk) It is with profound sadness that we
inform of the demise of Old Bens soccer captain Aloy
Peiris, who passed away at the age of 91 and was
cremated in UK in January 2013.
According to his daughter (Charmini Anthony who is
now in Sri Lanka), the Old Bens in UK gathered and
participated in the funeral service, and fulfilled the
families' wish by granting him a Benedictine send off.
Old Ben Aloy Peiris was dressed wearing the College
Tie, the casket draped with the College flag and the
College Anthem too was played on CD and sung by
the Old Bens present. The ashes of Aloy Peiris will be
interred today at Madampitiya Cemetery, following a
Memorial service at St. Lucia's Cathedral at 4.00 p.m.
Late Aloy Peiris was born in 1921 and had his entire
education at St. Benedicts' College and was a
boarder at the College Hostel. He excelled in sports,
captaining the college football team in 1940, and
also represented the college cricket team and was
an excellent Athlete too.

Sri Lankan New Year Celebrations in Nottingham
Sri Lankans all across the midlands gathered to
celebrate the Sinhala and Hindu New Year 2013 on
the 13th of April at Bestwood Community Centre
Nottingham. This was the inaugural major event
organised by the Nottingham Shanthi Buddhist
Vihara and Community Centre under the auspices of
Ven. Teldeniyaye Amitha Thero since its inception in
February 2013. Despite the relatively short period of
organisation and minimal publicity, the event was a
tremendous success and a memorable one for the
over 150 participants from across the region.
The afternoon session kicked off with several
adrenaline fuelled traditional New Year games
including 'banis kaama' (bun eating competition),
'kanaa mutti' (breaking the clay pot whilst
blindfolded), three legged race, tug of war, and lime
and spoon race. Participation levels were high
amongst adults and children alike, and despite being
fiercely competitive, a true community spirit
reminiscent of New Year celebrations in Sri Lanka
was evident throughout.
The ravenous 'athletes' were subsequently treated to
a delectable spread of traditional New Year cuisine
including 'kiri bath' (milk rice), 'kokis' (deep fried
batter of flour and coconut milk),' mung kavum' (a
sweet made of mung beans) and' kalu dodol' (a
sweet made of jiggery, coconut milk and rice flour),
before returning for even more games after which the
afternoon session drew to a close.
The traditional lighting of the oil lamp marked the
commencement of the evening session, and was
graced by the presence of Rev. Fr. Tony De Alwis,
Mr Manoj Tagnat of Indian Community Centre,
Nottingham, and Mr. Janat and Mr. Krishan of
Amman Hindu Kovil. Ven. Amitha Thero addressed
the gathering and extended a warm welcome to all
those present. A special vote of thanks was extended
to the organising committee and well wishers for
enabling the event to materialise. Mr Manoj Tagnat
later addressed the gathering and thanked the Ven.
Amitha Thero and the organisers on behalf of the
guests.
The much anticipated prize-giving ceremony for the
deserving winners of the traditional New Year games
and raffle-draw followed, while guests were provided
the opportunity for a further round of Sri Lankan
delicacies, freshly prepared in the makeshift kitchen
including Cutlets, Chinese rolls, Vade, Hoppers and
String Hoppers. The re-energised guests then
danced the night away to the lively tunes of the
Nottingham based Sri Lankan band 'Sapna'.

A super eight in the offing
Premier League cricket
By Naushad Amit
(sundaytimes.lk) Next year’s Sri Lanka Cricket
(SLC) Inter-Club Premier Cricket Tournament, the
edition for 2013/14 might include a ‘Super Eights’
stage according to official sources. With the
conclusion of the SLC Inter-Club Premier Cricket
season for 2012/13 where Sinhalese Sports Club
emerged champions, six teams are set to be
demoted to the lower category which is likely to be
named as the ‘emerging’ segment.
By 2015 all segments of SLC will be
confined to 10 teams each.
“The top segment will be restricted to 14 teams as
decided prior to the commencement of the
concluded competition. The upcoming tournament
in the top segment will have two groups, seven
teams in each. We may have to introduce a ‘Super
Eights’ stage as there will be six matches per team
during the whole season,” Chandima Mapatuna
the tournament manager of SLC told the Sunday
Times.
As agreed by the SLC officials and clubs last year,
the three low-seed teams each from the two
groups from this year’s Premier Tournament will be
demoted to the emerging segment. A total of 14
teams, seven each from the two groups will remain
in the Premier Tournament. The emerging
segment will include a total of 10 teams with four
teams to be added from the Sara Trophy segment
according to agreed plans.
Accordingly the six teams that face demotion from
the Premier Tournament are Burgher Recreational
Club (BRC), Lankan Cricket Club, Saracens, Navy
Sports Club, Galle Cricket Club and Kurunegala
Youth Cricket Club. BRC, Lankan and Saracens
were placed among the latter three from the Group
‘A’ where Moors SC topped while from the
champion SSC’s group Navy, Galle and
Kurunegala YCC were seeded bottom.
“If there will be a Super Eights stage, the winner of
the tournament will be decided after a league
competition. Nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Thomians stun Trinity with 29-15 win
by Roshen Steelman
(island.lk) S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia
made a huge upset when they thrashed Trinity
College, Kandy, 29 points to 15 in their InterSchool Under-20 rugby encounter played at
Havelock Park, Colombo yesterday.
Although the visitors drew the first blood through a
try when S. Etulgama put the points on the board,
the Thomians fought back and led 13-10 at the
halfway mark. Visitors collected their points
through three unconverted tries while the Mount
Lavinia lads scored their points through five
penalties and two goals.
Thomians opened their account when the visitors
were penalised and Devin Jayasinghe did the
needful to reduce the lead to 3-5 early in the first
half. Then Trinity hit back with their second try
when Umesh Samarasekara ran and touched
down right side of the post. However, Tharindu

to add the extra points.
After both teams were fighting for the position for a

Dhammaratne Junior School excels in women's cricket
S M Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corre.
(dailynews.lk) When you travel from Colombo to
Badulla by train passing Galagoda you come to a
train halt by the name of Dekinda with hardly any
buildings around and it is an isolated place where
nobody will take any notice of. It is about 20
kilometres from Nawalapitiya.
But the girls from that area with no facilities at all
formed a hard ball cricket team putting some of the
leading schools in Kandy to shame. Thats the
record of Dhammaratne Junior School from
Dekinda, which has a girls students on roll about
123 but their morale is high and are hell bent on
stamping their class. They stunned the ladies
women circuit when they scored a comprehensive
win over St Anthony's Girls College, Kandy which
is a metropolitan school.
Dhammarathe Junior School is one of the three
girls school teams from the Central Province who
entered for the twenty 20 cricket organised by the
Sri Lanka Cricket to develop women's cricket in the
country.
The game was introduced to the school by its
Physical Training Instructor Dilip Kumara and the
Principal of this little school P P Piyaratne Banda
jumped at the idea as cricket was indeed a popular
game and his school could make the grade. The
District Coach Amila Pinnaduwa along with
Provincial Coach Sunil Fernando not only
sharpened their raw skills but also gave
them the necessary encouragement.
The school had a small piece of land to
use as a playground and a small piece of
matting was presented by the Urban
Council, Nawalapitiya. But the main drive
for their playing cricket came from none
other than the Minister of Sports
Mahindananda Aluthgamage who provided
them with all the cricket playing
equipment. Otherwise they would have
never dreamt of playing hard ball cricket in
a school with a small student population
with no amenities whatsoever and located
off the beaten track.

Paddler Udaya Ranasinghe set to make history
by our Special Corr. in Kandy
(island.lk) Vidyartha’s Udaya Ranasinghe could be
the youngest paddler from any country at fourteen
years of age, to participate in the Commonwealth
Table Tennis Championships, in New Delhi.
Ranasinghe, ranked number three, is the current
Junior National champion and has been
performing excellently in local tournaments. He
has been on quite a few foreign tours already.
Sri Lanka’s leading player, National champion
Rohan Sirisena leads the side, which also has
Nirmala Jayasinghe and Milinda Lakshita, both
from the Air Force.
The undisputed women’s champion, Ishara
Madurangi (Air Force) will be joined by fellow
Ambalangoa girl Nuwani Navodya (Dharmasoka)
and Ridmi Kandanarachchi (Mahamaya) in the
team events. Maliyadeva’s Parani Sirisena and
Praveena de Silva (Girls’ High School) will be
playing in the individual events.
After the New Delhi leg, the players will fly out to
Paris for the Individual World Championships.
Sajith Kavinda (Army) will take the place of Milinda
Lakshita for the latter event.
The teams which fly out on the 3rd will be
managed by Sri Lanka’s National Coach Jagath
Rajapaksa.
The players have been involved in lengthy training
sessions at the training centre in Doluwa. Hopes
are high that Sri Lanka, which finished in 12th
position at the 2010 Commonwealth
Championships, will improve on that performance.
Sri Lanka U-19 take lead in rain-affected match
(island.lk) Sri Lanka Under-19 took a 1-0 lead over
Bangladesh Under-19 in the five-match Youth ODI
series, after they were declared winners by 62
runs, according to the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Rain interrupted the second innings, with Sri
Lanka at 133 for 4, within reach of Bangladesh’s
138-run target. The visitors were declared winners
as they had to score just 72 runs in the same
number of overs according to Duckworth-Lewis
method. The match was called off at 3:40pm, due
to persistent rain.
Sandun Weerakkody’s 62 off 80 balls set Sri
Lanka on course for a victory. Leg spinner Jubair
Hossain was the pick of the bowlers once again,
taking 2 for 34 from his seven overs.
Earlier, the home side made a poor start and
slipped to 62 for 5 in the 23rd over. Captain
Mosaddek Hossain and Abu Sayeem added 50
runs for the sixth wicket to lift the total over 100.
Sayeem made 43 off 66 balls with four fours and a
six.
For Sri Lanka, Binura Fernando took three wickets
while leg spinner Lakshan Jayasinghe took two
wickets.
Brief Scores:
Sri Lanka Under-19 133 for 4 in 27 overs
(Weerakkody 62, Dumindu 24) beat
Bangladesh Under-19 137 in 47.1 overs (Sayeem
43, Fernando 3-32) by 62 runs (D/L method).

Epic feat by Ahamed Muaaz
By S M Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports
Correspondent
(dailynews.lk) Sixteen year old Ahamed Muaaz of
Sri Sumangala College, Kandy, carved his name
into the record books when he
slammed two centuries in both innings
for his school in their inter school
cricket match against Nugawela
Central College played at Nugawela.
There is no record of a batsman
scoring two separate hundreds in a
school match in the hill capital for a
very long time according to living
memory. Therefore Ahamed Muaaz's
performance certainly deserves a place
in the record books of school cricket in
the hill capital.
According to his parents, this fine cricketer applied
for admission to the very school his father
attended but was rejected. They hail from a village
called Galagedera about 15 kilometres from
Kandy. Left with no option, this cricketer sought
admission to a lesser known school and played
junior cricket in which he excelled and was
coached by Ranjith Colombage.
This season the Sri Sumangalians did not play any
third term matches due to internal administrative
problems and also they did not have a
cricket coach for the senior team.
With half the season gone, former
Dharmaraja College and Kandy Cricket
Club cricketer took over the coaching of
the senior team at the end of January
2013.
In the first match itself Ahamed Muaaz
struck from by scoring 110 out of a total
of 180 and his knock included 10 sixes
and a surprisingly lesser number of 5
fours facing 120 deliveries. This meant
80 of his runs came in hits to the ropes.
In the second innings Ahamed Muaaz smashed
101 with 12 fours and 4 sixes off 125 balls, to
average 110.0. In the next match too he scored 93
which was also the last match for the season for
them.

lovely pass from midfielder M.Fazal. The score
was 1-0 for Renowns at lemons.
Saunders SC played hard and dominated the

from their wings.
It paid divident in the 70th minute of the match

A tribute to the ‘WALL’ of Sri Lankan cricket
As someone pointed out, Thilan Samaraweera is
not a Brian Lara, who is endowed with the talent
and the flair to fill up a stadium, but nevertheless,
his presence in the Sri Lankan middle order was
extremely crucial.
In a side filled with stroke
makers, Samaraweera was the
platform on which Sri Lanka
posted match winning totals or
saved Test matches. His career,
like all other cricketers’, had its
shares of ups and downs, but
Thilan will live in the shadows of
his more exuberant
contemporaries. But make no
mistake; if you leave out
numbers, his achievements are
only second to that of Kumar
Sangakkara.
Thilan announced his retirement
two months ago, and currently
represents Worcestershire in
county cricket and a tribute from
us to this awesome cricketer has
been long overdue.
When he addressed the media to announce his
retirement, Thilan said that despite all his
achievements, he will be remembered for the last
shot he played in Test cricket.
The third Test between Sri Lanka and Australia in
Sydney was evenly poised when Samaraweera
walked in to bat and before getting off the mark, he
gave off-spinner Nathan Lyon the charge, but
failed to clear mid-on.
He was given a tough time by
both the local and Australian
media and what caused a
degree of anger was his
seeming lack of regret, when
walking back to the team bus
after the day’s play.
Sri Lanka had never won a Test
match on Australian soil, and
Sydney 2013 was their best shot
so far and the experience of
Samaraweera could have seen
Sri Lanka over the line, as it
happened the year before in
South Africa.
Politics of Sri Lankan cricket
spares no one. Not even reason.
He was surprisingly axed for the
third Test against Australia at the
SSC, his home ground. At the SSC, Thilan had
averaged over 75. Then he was left out for Sri
Lanka’s tour of Pakistan as well. Only media
pressure brought him back to the side and what he
accomplished from thereon is history.
Foreign flavour in DCL 2013
YASARATNE GAMAGE
(dailynews.lk) Sri Lanka's number one football
tournament, the Dialog Champions League ( DCL
) 2013 will commence soon with the participation
of 20 elite football teams with 187 matches to be
played island wide.
The newest edition of the tournament where
number of teams participating has been increased
from 12 to 20 and many of them comprising
foreign players will no doubt give football lovers an
exciting season of soccer during the coming
months.
Veteran clubs from Colombo including Saunders,
Ratnams, Java Lane, Renown and Colombo FC
will vie with teams from outstations namely, Solid
SC ( Anuradhapura ), Pelicans ( Kurunegala ), Up
Country Lions ( Nawalapititya ), Super Sun (
Beruwala ), Matara City SC ( Matara ), Blue Star
SC and Park SC ( Kalutara ), Negambo Youth SC
and Don Bosco SC ( Negambo ) and New Youngs
( Wennappuwa ).
The services teams, Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air
Force, Police and Civil Security Department also
will give tough competition to other teams.
This year the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (
FFSL ) has permitted inclusion of three foreign
players for a team except for the teams from the
security forces.
The foreign players will be mainly from Nigeria and
Cameroon , according to FFSL sources. Their
inclusion will undoubtedly create more excitement
and enthusiasm for fans.
The tournament will also be the pathway for
players to be selected for National pool as the
National Selectors will visit the venues in search of
young talent.
(island.lk) After taking a heap of criticism for
dragging Sri Lanka Cricket for financial crisis,
former Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) World Cup
organising committee head Suraj Dandeniya
was elected uncontested as new President of
the Sri Lanka Badminton Association, for the
next two years, at its AGM held at the
Badminton Association headquarters at Maitland
Crescent, Colombo yesterday.
However a tense situation arose at the elections
with Prof. Ranjith Silva, who was to contest for
the post of President, leaving premises along
with another group in protest of the elections.
The group walked away in protest of the
decision to grant voting rights to the Uva
Province Badminton Association and deny
voting rights of the Eastern Province, North
Province and Government
Services Badminton
Associations, Mercantile
Badminton Association and the
Western Province.
When The Island contacted Prof.
Ranjith Silva, he said: "It was a
corrupt election. I have never
seen something like this in my
life. How come people do these
kind of corrupted things? I am
very disappointed."
Subsequently, the group led by Prof. Silva has
also taken their protest to Ms. Ranjani Jayakody,
Directress General of Sports. It was reported
that Ms. Jayakody would refer this issue to the
Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
