Dear Guests
Kia ora – Welcome
This evening we welcome William (Bill) Boyd, and his wife Lorna, on
their official visit to Washington DC as President of Rotary International. As this is a gathering at which many Rotarians will be present it
seemed in the spirit of Rotary to see if we could serve others by raising
some funds for a cause on which Rotary has led the way. And it just so
happens that Bill Boyd’s theme for his year as President is “Lead the
Way”. Announcing this theme at Rotary’s International Assembly Bill
Boyd said “this will be…an affirmation of my belief in the power of Rotarians to change the world, one positive act at a time”.
Proceeds from tonight’s function will go to the Rotary Foundation’s
campaign to eradicate polio; a campaign which is so very close to worldwide success. This is a campaign where Rotary has collaborated with
many governments to both raise funds and to work to eradicate this
terrible disease. Since Rotary began its PolioPlus programme there has
been a 99% decline in the number of polio cases.
Bill is an ordinary New Zealander who has achieved a great deal in Rotary. Before becoming President he was Treasurer of Rotary International, prior to that he was Director, and before that he was District
Governor. So it seemed appropriate this evening to also ask other “New
Zealanders of achievement” if they would donate something to our silent auction. The response was overwhelming– as you will see from this
catalogue.
I hope this evening will enable you to meet Bill Boyd, a New Zealander
of whom we are very proud. I also hope you enjoy sampling some of our
food and wines and bid in the silent auction for a unique souvenir of the
evening…
Thank you for joining us

Sir Edmund Hillary,
Conqueror of Mount
Everest
"In some ways I believe I epitomise the average New
Zealander: I have modest abilities, I combine these with a
good deal of determination, and I rather like to succeed"
Typically modest words uttered by perhaps the most famous
living New Zealander of his generation. Sir Ed
Hillary features on the face of the NZ$5 note, making him
the only living New Zealander to appear on a banknote.
New Zealand’s most accomplished explorer, he gained world
recognition in 1953 as the first man, along with Sherpa
Tenzing Norgay, to summit Mount Everest. He followed this
in 1958 by becoming the first man to drive overland to the
South Pole. Since then, Sir Ed has devoted much of his life
to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the
